PCI Express Power question

I'm buying a graphics card that requires a 6 and 8 pin aux power connection for my 2010 Mac Pro. I f I am not planning to OC, is there any danger in using a 6 to 8 pin adapter on one of the cables?
Thanks

Then you aren't buying a Mac OS card.
You can't OC a card in Mac OS so you'd have to be using Windows.
Besides, you can buy a cheap 450W PSU that provides 2 each of 6 and 8-pin modular power cables.

but the question is does it fit the Mac Pro pci express power socket?
and the other end of it does it fit any standard pc vid card? or is it also smaller?
as i plan to buy this for my Mac Pro so i can power up the 8800 gtx
    thanks!

"Connecting the range extender to an Ethernet network so that the range extender could act as a wireless access point instead of a range extender."
Yes, I am essentially using it as an access point for the Mac Pro (attaching a simple ethernet cord in the back, it will automatically get a handshake with the network), and a wireless extender for my P.C. laptop and Power Mac G4.
If this doesnt work, I'm gonna move my cable modem and wireless router to my office (and attach Mac Pro directly to modem or router).
I dont want to have to buy a new Apple Router when I have a perfectly good D-link system going. It currently works with my roomates Powerbook and Airport Express Sation (air tunes), as we got it working last night. If all else fails, I wait till the new express card comes out and get it installed at my local store.

  • PCI Express Power Cable for ATI X1900 XT

I was given a X1900 ATI but the card didn't come with the power cord (booster cable) that connects to the motherboard. I'd like to order one but have no idea what I need to get. I know it's a 6 pin to 6 pin connection but that's it. Anyone would know where I could find the right info? I tried ATI/AMD but they only show the old power cable (4 pin inline).
    Thanks.

  • Firewire 400 and 800 PCI Express Card Question

I just put in a Firewire 800 PCI Express card in my Mac Pro. If I add a Firewire 400 PCI Express card also to my Mac Pro will the 800 card work as in 400 speed due to the PCI Express 400 card being added to the Logic board?
    Thanks!!

    Each card operates independently.

  • PCI Express card question

I am thinking of adding two Belkin USB 2.0 and FireWire PCI ExpressCards to my my new 8 core Mac Pro - does anybody know if there is a technical problem with having two such cards operating together in the same Mac?

I have their FW800. One channel with 2 FW800 and 1 FW400. The system 'sleeps' except the fans stay on is all. Which isn't totally bad thing. $109 for FW800.
If it is for hard drives, might want to look into an SATA card though.

  • Need PCI-Express booster cable pinout/connector pin matching

Does anyone have an upgrade card for the mac pro, like a NVidia Quadro 4500 or the ATI 1900XT? I need the pinout for the booster cable that comes with those cards so i can connect my 7800GT to the motherboard to get the extra power.
If anyone could provide the pinout for the motherboard connector, showing which pins have the ground and which have the +12V connectors i would really appreciate it.
An alternate pinout would be which pins on the video card side match which pins on the motherboard, which would be also very useful, something like:
    video card motherboard
    |-| <-- the clip |-| <---- the clip
    |1|2|3| |1|2|3|
    |4|5|6| |4|5|6|
    or

    |12V|+12V|12V| |12V|+12V|12V|
    |GND |GND |GND | |GND |GND |GND |
    Any help will be appreciated

  • Connecting 6800Ultra VGA (2xMolex) to PSU that has PCI-Express connector

    Hi there,
I have a PSU that has 2 PCI-express power connectors (ThermalTake 680W). However I'm still using an AGP video card (6800 Ultra) with 2 Molex connectors.
I would like to try and connect 1 of the PCI-express connectors from the PSU to the 2 molex connectors on the video card (which technically should be fine since the PCI-express connection from the PSU should have enough power for the 2x molex connectors on the 6800 Ultra).
However, I can't seem to find the cable that I need to convert from the single 6-pin PCI-express connector to the 2 4-pin molex connectors. In my case I need the exact opposite from the adapter that is readily available to hook up an old PSU (only molex) to a new PCI-express video card.
Can anyone help me locate the cable I need?
    Thx,
    Chris.

You may need a Gefen DVI to Mini DP Converter. Although my G5 (In my opinion) is relatively new, it needed this adapter.
When I first tried to hook it up, I very carefully followed the instructions that come with the adaptor. That did not work as the screen picture was broken and continuously scrolled. I took it in to my local Genius who determined that the adapter is made for single processors, and the G5 is a dual processor. According to the genius, if you turn the monitor on before you power on the G5; the G5 will search for its old processor and will not properly recognize the new one. If you power the computer first and then the monitor, the G5 will recognize it as a new model and all will be fine.
I'n not sure I have the explanation correct, but I do have to power the computer first before the monitor.
Hope this helps solve your problem, even if it costs $90+.

  • MSI NF980-G65 PCI express x16 slot question

i was rewiring my case so i could get some cables out of the way, and as i was removing my graphics card, i pressed too hard on the little blue tail on the topmost PCI slot (the one closest to the processor socket) and the tail fell off. it looks like a bit of plastic chipped off the actual slot where the tail connects to the board, but i'm not sure if there's any damage to the slot, or if the slot has anything that has been compromised. the chip off the pci express x16 slot does not reach into the slot itself, there's no hole in the slot, i dont believe any of the connectors are touched, but i could be wrong.
here's a picture of the motherboard with the tail on the top PCI express x16 slot.

    to clarify,
it's just there to help guide the card in place and it's not a tab that releases a mechanism which physically lock the card in place.
its actually lock the card in a place, but will be fine without it as well,
when its filled well into the slot and secured by the screws

  • T420s Nvidia Graphics Card & Express Card Questions

Hello, and thank you for checking out my post.  My apologies for writing a book, but I'm hoping to give as much detail as needed the first go round.
I just received my custom-built T420s (4170-CTO) and have a couple technical questions/concerns about it.  The details of my configuration are located at the bottom of this post.
First off, one of the deciding factors of my purchase was the discrete graphics card.  On the T420s I chose NVIDIA NVS 4200M Optimus Graphics 1GB, Intel Core i7-2620M Processor.  I was thrilled to have more than 256 MB of dedicated graphics memory for my games.  Upon receiving my laptop, though, I ran the Windows Experience Index and saw that the lowest score was the graphics card, which is identified as Intel HD Graphics Family and has 64 MB of dedicated graphics memory.  After my heart started beating again I checked Device Manager and found under Display both Intel HD Graphics Family and NVIDIA NVS 4200M listed as working with up-to-date drivers.  When I configured the laptop online there was no mention of hybrid graphics, so I'm not sure why I have an Intel Graphics card on the machine.  My current laptop that I was looking to replace is a T61p with a NVIDIA Quadro FX 570M graphics card, and only that NVIDIA card is shown under Device Manager and in the Windows Experience / Performance Information.  Thinking that perhaps disabling the Intel card would cause the NVIDIA card to take over, I disabled that through Device Manager.  My screen went black and after feeling quite stupid I rebooted my computer.  The default Windows Display driver kicked in, allowing me to see well enough to get back to Device Manager and enable the Intel Graphics.  I counted myself lucky that I wasn't stuck with a working computer with a blank screen, but I'm still confused about why the NVIDIA card isn't the only display adapter on the machine, and why it isn't the default/main adapter.  Most importantly, will it be usable to run my games?
My second question is regarding the PCI ExpressCard slot.  My aim for this machine was to have a HDD to store my data (I selected the 320GB 7200 RPM HDD) and a SSD to boot and run my programs from.  Another reason for choosing this machine was the comment on Lenovo's site stating that a user booted his T420s from a solid state drive in the PCI ExpressCard slot, which was exactly was I was looking for.  I need the CD/DVD drive, so I can't put the second hard drive in a caddy.  During configuration I chose the option for an Express Card Slot & 4 in 1 Card Reader & Smart Card Reader.  From what I can tell, the Express Card slot is not connected to the Card Readers and I will not lose use of those ports.  When I opened the computer up to install more RAM, I saw what is labeled in Lenovo's hardware manual as the Express Card slot, apparently empty - which is great!  Now I need to figure out what kind of SSD to look for, and on that I'm kinda lost.
I'm guessing that my ExpressCard slot is 34mm and PCI form factor rather than USB... but I don't want to spend hundreds of dollars on a not-incredibly-educated guess.  I'm also not sure where mSATA comes into play for me, if at all.  Looking at SSDs on sites such as newegg.com, I'm unsure of what form factor to choose - ExpressCard, PCI-E, mSATA, and/or 1.8"?
The tech specs of my configured T420s (copy/pasted from the order status) are as follows.  I hope this means more to you than it does to me.

    0A71709   VBB INTCRI7-2620MPR(2.7GHZ

2nd generation Intel Core processor family DRAM Controller - 0104
2nd generation Intel Core processor family PCI Express Conroller - 0101
Whew.  Thanks for making it through my book-long post.  If you can offer advice on either of my questions/concerns I'd really appreciate it.
    Thanks!
    Lauren

The T420s with Nvidia GPU has two graphics card that can switch on the fly, if you only want the discrete gpu, just go into your bios menu under graphics there is an option to select discrete.
With the Nvidia Optimus (which is what you have), it can switch between Nvidia and Intel GPU depending on your application needs. This will allow you to conserve battery or power.
Expresscard slot 34 mm slot is occupied by the card reader that you ordered.
What you are talking about within the ram slot cover, is the mPCIe slot, which can be occupied by a mSATA drive.

  • PCI express Multi channels Audio card ?

Hello, I need to build a Audio/Video player for an installation witch will run 365 days per year.
The system need to be fully automated and it need to have minimun human support.
I could use a Mac Pro for this since it's easier to setup the needed hardware such as the video card and the sound card, but the Mac Pro does not have light out management it does not fit on racks and it does not have redundant power supply.
So I'm trying to build this media server with xserve for the reason I explane above .
As video card I've found this ATI Radeon X1300 witch is good for my kind of application since I need to run a quicktime movie 1400x1050 Animation
For the sound I wish I could not use an external firewire card to minimize possible issues like power supply fault ( most firewire card are sold with little powersupply and very cheep power connectors )
So I'm searching for a PCI Express card to be integrated in the Xserve that could output 6 discrete audio channels from my quicktime movie.
Does anyone know any good one ?
    thanks

Your question is very specific, so you might find better answers looking somewhere like M-Audio.
A quick search does, indeed, find a lack of PCIe-based solutions. However, you shouldn't necessarily discard PCI-X options. The XServe can accept either PCIe or PCI-X cards - you just need to order the PCI-X riser card for your server. That way you can still leverage the multitude of PCI-X options out there.

  • Problem of PCI express link width and speed

    hello,
I instantiate the pci express core v1.7 into a pci express endpoint and the core was configured as GEN I x8 or GEN II x4. By using the example design Xilinx offered in the ipcore dir, I could read and write device by PIO mode.
However, when I check the device’s link width and speed by using lspci –vvvv in Linux, I found that no matter what configurations I set, the device link is always trained as GEN I x1, which means the throughput of device, reduce 8 times. May the most important problem is that all logic in the user layer upon transaction layer are written at 250MHz, and if link width and speed are limited 2.5G/T and x1, I need to change user logic circuit which is a huge work.
So my question is how to change the PCI express link width and speed in OS side, or I need to change a new motherboard?
(I guess it related with motherboard, and I check that the PCI express slot in motherboard support GEN II X16. Another issue, when I insert a PCI express GEN II x8 device, the device is also trained as GEN I x1).

  • X-Fi Titanium PCI Express and DVD-A Player

*X-Fi Titanium PCI Express and DVD-A Playerg Hi Guys
Can anyone tell me if the Creative Mediasource DVD-A player works with the X-Fi Titanium PCI-E card under Windows 7, or indeed, at all. I've just bought a Titanium card and when I try to install the DVD-A player (latest version....) I get a message, 'Set up can't find any supported product...' That wouild be a bummer as I have a fair number of DVD-A discs and I would like to play them on my PC. I know that Power DVD 8 Ultra will play them but does it downmix the audio streams or something like that. I have a Pioneer DVD-A player but it is more convenient to play them this way if it is possible. I laso have Windows Vista so if it's only a problem with the OS that would be a start.
Anyway, any help would be much appreciated.
    Thank you in anticipation
    Best Regards

    Hi Guys
Many, many thanks for all your help with this.....NOT!!!!
I really hate it when you come to forum to ask for help and everybody fecking ignores you....was the question too hard for you. I thought it was really simple, does the DVD-A player work with this card under this OS or not. I at least thought some of the Creative mods might help, I've just spent my hard earned cash on this card after all. As it is an X-Fi card I thought the DVD-A player would work okay but it doesn't so maybe I'm doing something wrong but I don't know because I didn't get an answer.
    Thanks a whole bunch guys

  • Is it possible to add an extra Graphics card: ATI X300 SE PCI express

I have a PowerMac G5 with ATI Radeon 9600 XT(AGP) installed. Recently my friend gave me a ATI X300 SE PCI express card and I am wondering whether I can add this card in the G5 and hook up another monitor to it.
The ATI and Apple websites didn't mention this card is supported, so should I just give up this idea? Thanks.

Another reason you can't use the ATI X300 -- it has Windows PC ROM code. You can only use cards in the Power Mac with OS X compatible firmware.
As of this date, the fastest AGP card you can buy to replace your old one is the Mac Edition of the Radeon X800 XT. It runs $399 from various sources (ATI online store, Apple online store, MacSales.com, SmallDog.com, and Buy.com).
