PCI Express Video Through ExpressCard

Greetings.
I am part of a project that requires laptops to drive 3-6 displays. We figured out that my personal 2.16Ghz Core 2 Duo MBP running 10.4 has no problem driving a PCI express video card housed in an external (powered) box that utilizes the ExpressCard slot. Using this setup and the right video card, I can drive 3 30" monitors, one from the built-in dual-link DVI port, and 2 from the external video card. Or, I can drive one 30" and then 4 24" monitors from the external card. The performance and stability on both scenarios is truly excellent.
This was supposed to be one of our better solutions. We then bought new MBPs and found that the new ones can't do this! They simply won't boot if the expresscard video is connected. The new MBPs are 2.4Ghz using ROM MBP41.00C1.B03 and SMC 1.27f1. They run 10.5, although I don't think that matters since the failure occurs before OS loading begins (I think).
The failure mode is that I hear the first tone when the unit is first powered, but then no activity past that. No monitor lights up (not even the built-in), no noises, no hd activity, nothing. Removing the expresscard allows the MBP to act normally after a reboot, so no permanent effects.
I'd appreciate any help in solving this. It hurts to have spent the $$$ banking on 1-year newer MBPs to have at least the minimum capabilities matching my personal MBP. (Then there's the matter of egg in the face after convincing coworkers to go down this path.)
If there's no apparent fix, would forcing the new MBPs to use the old ROM as used in my personal MBP work?
Thanks.
Michael

Have you tried seating a different kind of PCIE card in the housing? How about with no card?

  • PCI Express video cards

Does anyone know of any cheap PCI Express video cards.
I need a second video card for a G5 Powermac that's arriving soon but have not been able to find anything reasonably priced.

Where did u get this information?
I ask as before, if u tried to put a ATI 9200 in the
PCI slot, with an AGP card, your computer would
freeze, lose audio, or some other weird mess.
So basically, apple has said, hey ya! you can have
    multiple cards now
You can't compare an AGP/PCI-X Mac with a PCIe Mac. The PCIe bus should handle multiple cards better.
Even on Linux I've run into issues with mixing AGP and PCI graphics cards. It's possible but it's not plug and play. With PCIe it's different.

  • Span to 2 monitors w/ExpressCard PCI-Express Video Card? Possible?Probable?

Hey guys. I had screen-real-estate envy a few months ago and talked myself into thinking I could live without a laptop and just drag my new 20" iMac around once every week or two when I do Keynote Teaching. The sucker's 25lbs and has sharp edges and a lot of cables, it's a huge hassle to set up and haul around.. it's no laptotp replacement, although I do adore the screen. This has brought me to my current plan to sell the iMac eventually and buy a MBP, which I'll want to span to a bigger LCD. But my real dream of the last 10 or so years is to have 3 monitors going at the same time. When I saw that the ExpressCard slot can interface with both USB2.0 AND the PCI-Express bus I started using my imagination on how I could have 3 monitors going without having to spring for a PowerMac.
So the question is, any discussion about an ExpressCard video card? Any in production? Anything theoretically wrong with this concept? Probability of it happening, time frame? Prognosticate away!

Yo! Don't post the same question twice, OK?
I posted a reply to the earlier occurrence of your
    post. Check it out.
    RRS
Yeah sorry if it's at odds with your forum sensibilities, but I felt that this question fit well in both the Display AND the Expansion forums - and since neither has been able to give me an answer (although the alternative you suggested isn't wholly a bad option) as to whether or not this is or will be possible, I'll keep the question alive in 2 places until it gets sorted out. If this is against forum policy or something let me know, otherwise...

  • Desktop is not defaulting to PCI Express video card

Installed a Nvidia GTX 560TI w/appropriate power supply AFTER disabling secure boot and enabling legacy support.  The computer booted to the video card after the second try reboot, drivers successfully installed.  Later after attempting to wake the computer from sleep it has defaulted back to the onboard video WITHOUT restarting.  Now will not recognize PCI express card.

    Hi,
What power supply are your using?  The stardard HP 460 watt power supply is insufficient for the NVIDIA 560 TI as it requires two 6 pin PCI-E power connectors.
Go back into the BIOS and make sure that Legacy mode is enabled and Secure boot is disabled. Save the changes and power off. Now power up and see if the system recognizes the discrete video card.
BTW - the PC needs to completely power down and back up before the BIOS will rescan for hardware changes.

  • Does PCI Express Video Card compatible on a MSI KM4M Motherboard

Does a PCI Express NVDIA Video Card (8500GT 512MB/128Bit/DDR2) compatible on a MSI KM4M Series Motherboard (System Model: KM400-8235)?
Is it possible to setup the PCI Express NVDIA Video Card on the MSI Motherboard PCI Bus Slot?
    Thanks for any response.

Maybe this is a dumb question..
There's no way a PCI-e card will work on that board. AGP yes, PCI yes, PCI-e no.

  • PCI express video Card for Lr3?

    Greetings,
I may recall reading that a "certain type" of video card will help speed up Lr3 performance...
If so - what type am I looking for and of course - what is a good money bargain??
    Thank-you!

Can you be more specific about your processor and your system? If the AMD processor is one of the first generation dual cores (I gather they are still being sold in budget systems), then upgrading to a more modern processor will show you the most benefit and saving your pennies for a new system would be the best option.
Otherwise, add that gig of RAM and, if your computer motherboard can handle it, jump up to 8GB.
Add a graphics card if you don't have one because without one your system dedicates system RAM to graphics.
Add a second 7200RPM hard drive if your system power supply and cooling can handle it.

  • Connecting 6800Ultra VGA (2xMolex) to PSU that has PCI-Express connector

    Hi there,
I have a PSU that has 2 PCI-express power connectors (ThermalTake 680W). However I'm still using an AGP video card (6800 Ultra) with 2 Molex connectors.
I would like to try and connect 1 of the PCI-express connectors from the PSU to the 2 molex connectors on the video card (which technically should be fine since the PCI-express connection from the PSU should have enough power for the 2x molex connectors on the 6800 Ultra).
However, I can't seem to find the cable that I need to convert from the single 6-pin PCI-express connector to the 2 4-pin molex connectors. In my case I need the exact opposite from the adapter that is readily available to hook up an old PSU (only molex) to a new PCI-express video card.
Can anyone help me locate the cable I need?
    Thx,
    Chris.

You may need a Gefen DVI to Mini DP Converter. Although my G5 (In my opinion) is relatively new, it needed this adapter.
When I first tried to hook it up, I very carefully followed the instructions that come with the adaptor. That did not work as the screen picture was broken and continuously scrolled. I took it in to my local Genius who determined that the adapter is made for single processors, and the G5 is a dual processor. According to the genius, if you turn the monitor on before you power on the G5; the G5 will search for its old processor and will not properly recognize the new one. If you power the computer first and then the monitor, the G5 will recognize it as a new model and all will be fine.
I'n not sure I have the explanation correct, but I do have to power the computer first before the monitor.
Hope this helps solve your problem, even if it costs $90+.

  • Will NI Offer CANbus card for PCI Express

This is really a question for marketing. Will NI offer a CANBus interface for the upcoming PCI Express slot, (or Expresscard slot) that is supposed to replace PCI and PCIMICA on future PCs? If so, when? If not - a USB to CANBus instead?

    Hi PPH,
please understand that those kinds of things cannot be discussed or disclosed in a public forum. You might want to talk to your local field sales engineer (or local branch office) about requirements you have that current National Instruments products do not fulfill.

  • 2x K8N Neo 4 - PCI express problem

    Hi,
I've received 2 motherboard K8N Neo4 MS-7125 and both of them have the same problem ie the PCI express seems dead (bip error indicating a video problem). When I use an old PCI video card, I've an initialization and something on the monitor but I'm unable to boot or access the bios.
Of course, I've tested both motherboards with several PCI-Express video cards, new PSU, new DDR, resetting the bios, unplugged all devices like HDD and optical drives.
I'm surprised to see two motherboard of the same type with the same failure at the same time. They are a little bit more 3years old (3y+4months and 3y+1month)
Anybody with the same problem ?
(I hope it's not a default of this K8N series as I have also this motherboard model in one of my computer  )

    Not all PCI-E gen2 VGA's can works in PCI-E v1 slots...
The RX700 and NX6600GT were previously installed on these motherboards. They are working on another computer too.
I'm relatively sure that it's a motherboard problem in both cases.
I'm just surprised to see 2 motherboards with the same 'default' at the same time.

  • Z68A-G45 (G3): BIOS screen unreadable on PCI express graphics card

    I have a Z68A-G45 (G3) board with Intel Core i3-2320T processor.  BIOS version is E7750IMS v11.2.
When entering the BIOS setup screen with DEL, everything is fine when the display is connected to the motherboard HDMI port.
When I plug in my MSI Nvidia 8500GT-based PCI express video card and connect the display to its HDMI (or DVI) port, the BIOS screen is corrupt and almost unreadable.  I can see some characters and images -- the BIOS is there, I can see the temperature readout -- but navigation is very difficult.  This problem occurred with BIOS version 11.0; I just flashed to 11.2 and the problem persists.
    Here's what it looks like
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks,
    Steve

In case anybody's curious it turns out the issue was specific to the card.  I tried a different PCIe card and the BIOS screen showed up fine.
So finally I ditched my old reliable nVidia card and used the Sandy Bridge integrated graphics instead.  No problems so far.

  • Need Urgent Help : Using VIVADO Design Suite for PCI Express 3.0, 8 lane, and AXI Interfaces for Video Processing

My scenario is as follows :-
    1) I am building a Image Processing Application and using VIVADO HLS for that.
    2) I have synthesized my design using VIVADO HLS, and export it as IP-XACT format.
    3) I have imported it in VIVADO Design Suite, and added to the IP catalog, in a new project created.
    4) Since I am building an image processing pipeline, I am using AXI Stream interfaces, 1 input stream, and 1 output stream, and mentioned that in the HLS tool itself..
    5) I have a Virtex 7 690T FPGA, and have accordingly chosen the board throughout the HLS process, and the project.
    6) We want to use a PCI Express 3.0, through DMA access to the CPU.
    7) Now I am stuck here regarding how to proceed forward, I have gone through most of the Xilinx documentation, but am still not clear about what to do from here on.
    8) There are these 3 variables for me, AXI Stream Interface, DMA, PCI Express 3.0, all I have right now is the IP of the Image Processing pipeline that I generated through VIVADO HLS.
    9) Also at a later stage we would like to stream in Video, and process it through our image processing pipeline.
Please help me with an overview of steps that I need to follow to get my design together and working on a real FPGA hardware with my Computer(windows OS), as in what Xilinx IP blocks do I need to use, how will I be able to exploit the maximum bandwidth from the PCI Express Interface in my specific case of send image through a stream, what tools will I need to use at every stage.
I would be highly grateful if you guys can help me, we have a dealine to meet.
Please let me know if we need any extra information.

  • ExpressCard/34 compatible with PCI Express 1 lane?

    Hello everyone,
I am looking into purchasing this item, however I am confused about the differences and compatibilities between the ExpressCard/34 slot my MBP has and a PCI Express. The device I am looking into purchasing is compatible with 1, 4, 8, 16 lane PCIe slots. Is this item compatible with my MBP?
Here is the link to the item:
    http://www.blackmagic-design.com/products/intensity/techspecs/
    It is the Intensity Pro.
    Anyways, thanks for the help.

    Hi e,
The Intensity Pro card in question is an internal PCI card and isn't going to fit in an EC/34 slot. It's built for a Mac Pro, not a MacBook Pro (so a discussion on PCI slots would be academic at best). The Shuttle is Windows only, and needs a built in USB 3 port (no such Mac exists). So you'll need to find an external device which uses one of the host interfaces available on the MBP (FW, USB2). Good luck on your search, and it you find something promising, I hope you'll post back with info.

  • Enable both PCI-Express and onboard video on Ultra 20 M2?

I don't see any bios options to enable the onboard video if I have a video card installed in the PCI-Express 16 slot. Is this possible? I'd like to run the workstation dual-head.

The board will detect a video card in the pci-e 16x slot and auto-disable the onboard video to avoid conflicts. Apparently , there is no way to manually enable the onboard video while a card is present.

  • HDMI connection through PCI Express X-Fi Titanium Fatal1ty Pro Series and Nvidia GTX 2951

    Hello,
I want to connect HDMI connection through PCI Express X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Pro Series and Nvidia GTX 295\but i cant tell which of the pins on the Audio Card is the Spdif.

CRe: Mic not working (PCI Express X-Fi Titanium Fatalty Pro Series)? Hello,
    Thanks for the reply.
The headset is connected via the 3.5mm jacks in the card.
I believe I have it working now. I ended up having to unstall the drivers and software, reboot, install drivers and software and then mess with the settings. The only issues that I am having now is that I hear a a really high sort of feedback/hiss tone from the headphones now. To correct this I have to turn the input for the microphone down really low within the Windows 7 controls for the microphone and turn it up with Ventrilo to get the mic to work and remove the feedback/hiss.
I believe that the issue stems from the flexjack setting. The whole flexjack thing really seems to mess with the microphone settings. I believe I choose line-in instead of microphone.
Once I get home tonight from work, I will hopefully post the exact settings I came up with to get the mic to work.
