PCI RAID Card -- jumper settings?

Hello and thanks, the folks in these forums have always been very helpful.
Installing the PCI Raid card into the G5 was a little more involved than I expected, and while I was getting it seated one of the jumpers fell off. I don't know which one, and I am not going to install it into the new server until I get the card set up correctly.
I cannot find a pic or diagram of the default positions of these jumpers, or information on whether they even matter. The manual has no information on this aspect of the card.

No, it is this one below, a SATA Raid card that only works with the internal drives. I would provide a link to the manual, but it will be no help as it provides no jumper-block charts or descriptions.
PCI Hardware RAID card
This 64-bit/66 MHz PCI card provides enhanced reliability and performance to Xserve G5's internal Serial ATA (SATA) drives using a hardware RAID controller. Bypassing the on-board hard drive controllers, this card provides three independent 150MBps Serial ATA controllers backed by a high-performance RAID processor and 64MB of RAID controller cache with an on-card backup battery.
The PCI Hardware RAID controller provides RAID level 0, 1 and 5 capabilities to the Apple Drive Module bays and is managed by a provided command-line management tool. Multiple logical drives can be created, and each logical drive supports different RAID levels, different stripe sizes, and different cache policies. In the case of a drive failure in a protected RAID 1 or 5 configuration, drives can be hot-swapped and the RAID set can be rebuilt on to a new drive online while the server continues to serve data.
Note: RAID levels 0 and 1 require a minimum of 2 Apple Drive modules; RAID level 5 requires 3 Apple Drive modules. Apple recommends drive modules of the same size for each RAID set. The hardware RAID card does not support FireWire Target Disk mode.

    I am planning on setting up RAID 5 on one of my PPC G5 Xservers with an Apple PCI RAID card and 3 Hitachi 1 terabyte HDs. At $180 a drive and a $300 or so for a card this seems like a good setup. Has anyone tried this or have any suggestions.

    What is the best e-Sata PCI RAID card for Mavericks.  Bought a new MAC PRO with Mavericks and the older PCI 1095,3124 that I used on older MAC Pro does not work.  The MAC sees it, but the drivers never show up as being installed.  If I could find drivers that work or a recommended PCI card it would be appreciated.

    PM made sense - 6 yrs ago when disk drives were much slower. Today it is a bottleneck.
    SAS makes more sense. Outside of SSD, no disk drive maxes out by itself one PM interface (an SSD will) but it also means just two drives are enough to do so. So check out why to avoid PM:

  • Trouble NetBooting Xserve G5 with PCI RAID Card

    Has anyone else had problems NetBooting Xserve G5 with the PCI RAID card installed?
    I've got a Dual 2.0 GHz and Dual 2.3 GHz Xserve G5 that both can't seem to NetBoot consistently. On the very odd occasion they do netboot but not very oftern. When you set the NetBoot volume from the Startup Disk system preference and reboot, they just fail to boot and eventually their fans go crazy.
    I have other Xserve G5s that NetBoot just fine. I've tried different network cables and swapping switch ports with Xserves that work, but it hasn't helped.
    Could it be something on the NetBoot server?
    Looking at the system log on the NetBoot server you can see the "bootpd" request from the booting server. I don't have a graphics card install in the Xserves being NetBooted so don't know what's being displayed on the server's console.
    The NetBoot server is an Intel-based Xserve (Late 2006) running 10.4.11.

    that seems to be the next step here: find or purchase a new card to test the existing drives.
    i had wondered if these cards aren't compatible with the 750 gb drives. does anyone know?
    also, would a bad battery cause such craziness? does the battery keep read/write cache data on the 64mb on-card memory for just this purpose? i haven't found much documentation on the apple branded cards.

  • XServe G5 unable to boot from raid 5 partition (Apple PCI raid card)

    I've installed Leopard Server on a raid 5 partition, on a XServe G5 with an Apple PCI raid card, but I can't boot from that partition.
    This server was running on 10.3 server with the same partition since 4 years and they where no problem.
    Somebody have a suggestion ?
    Spec : write cache off, readahead off, iopolicy direct / 3 hard drives Apple 80GB

  • Best Throughput for RAID - Internal SATA vs. PCI RAID Card

    Hi, we're upgrading our old server, which has been on an upgraded G4. We put 3 SATA drives in it, connected to a Highpoint 1820a RAID card running RAID 5.
    We're moving this to an older G5 1.6 GHz model (2003). It currently has 2 internal SATA drive bays, but I know can be expanded with an adapter kit. It also has just plain PCI slots (not PCI-X or PCIe).
    So I'm wondering what would provide better performance (throughput I guess):
    • Using the 2 internal bays with a software RAID 1?
    • Putting our old Highpoint RAID card in the PCI slot and running RAID 1 or possibly RAID 5 (with another drive)?
    I know the RAID card doesn't use the processor for RAID functions, but I think in a RAID 1 it's fairly minimal, correct? I'm mostly wondering if the older basic PCI slot would bet the bottleneck in a fast system compared to the onboard SATA controllers?

    Well, we're most concerned with data security and reliability. We're not streaming video or anything else that would demand extreme throughput. The server is mostly serving files to 4-5 users. So I imagine the performance gains would only be noticed when opening/closing files off the server, correct?
    And we already own the Highpoint card, which has 8 internal SATA ports, so we'll probably use this. It works fine on PCI bus. So we can run this with 4 drives in either two RAID 1s (boot & files); a RAID 5, or a RAID 10.
    We'll probably stick with Western Digital or Seagate 'enterprise' SATA drives, such as the WD RE3.
    So, do you think we would see much real-world difference between the different RAID options (RAID 1 software, RAID 1 hardware, RAID 5 hardware, RAID 10 hardware)?

  • ACARD AEC-6860M PCI RAID ATA 66 card not showing connected hard drives

    I just installed an ACARD AEC-6860M PCI card in my G4 (Quicksilver 2002) and am having some difficulty getting Disk Utility to recognize the drives. I know other people in these forums have used this particular card before (Related thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=5688908), so I'm hoping you can help me.
    The AEC-6860M is a PCI RAID card for 2 ATA drives. I've installed the drivers for the card and verified that it appears in System Profiler. However, no combination of drives or cables makes the 2 drives I have connected to it visible in System Profiler (under SCSI or ATA) or in Disk Utility, so I can't format them and actually use them.
    Can anyone share any secrets? Thanks!

    Sorry to take so long responding. Major disaster! My whole wall bookcase just tumbled, and I'm still working at excavating the family (of Macs).
    Your card should work. I've used the Acard cards by the dozens without problem, though I've never used that particular 6860 card or set up a RAID ARRAY. Just checked, using a 6880 (RAID) though as a controller card and not as a RAID ARRAY, and found that my 2002 QS Mac would not see a standard hard drive(#2) running OSX (10.2) that had been formatted by the OSX install disk using the stock bus on the motherboard. It would, however, see a hard drive(#3) that had been formatted while connected to an ACARD controller card (6280). I'm guessing that an OSX installer disk is prepared to see and to deal with a SCSI drive, and that Disk Utility is not.
    Check that.
    Just removed the controller card formatted drive(#3) and re-installed the OSX(10.2) drive(#2); this time my 2002 QS saw it right away, both on the desktop and in disk utility. I guess it needed personal messenger service.
    As I recall, I've seen that happen before using controller cards; as a result, I've always taken care to format a new hard drive by connecting it to a controller card if that is the way I intend to use it. Hard drives can be capricious, sometimes. At any rate, try formatting your hard drive(s) with an OSX installer disk (hoping you have one) while connected to the ACARD controller card - just click on erase (twice) and the drive formats automatically.
    I'm a little mystified by reference to drivers; never installed any drivers, and always assumed none were needed.

  • Problems w/ on-board NVidia RAID + PCI RAID on P7N Diamond

    Here's the setup and issue. 
    I'm booting off of the on-board NVidia RAID on my P7N Diamond.  It's RAID5 w/ 4 WD 640GB drives.  Works fine.
    I've recently pulled a NetCell SyncRAID SR5000 PCI RAID card (runs an adapted RAID3) from an old system where it worked fine and was NOT the boot drive...just storage.  Plugged it in the one and only PCI slot on my P7N Diamond.  Once it's in, the system will no longer boot.
    When the PCI RAID card is not installed, the mobo's BIOS boot menu shows "NVIDIA RAID5 1".  As soon as I install the PCI RAID card, the NVidia RAID disappears (no longer an option at all) and is replaced by "IDE:Revolution".  At that point the system cannot find any bootable source and fails.
    I also get an error message "Not Enough Space to Copy PCI Option ROM".
    Unfortunately, MSI's tech support is passing the buck on this one.  They're saying:
    Then sound like the card and the board sata controller are not compatible. If the card is connected it disable the onboard SATA controller. Once the card install the port is enable again. please check with the card manufacture. thanks
    I really find this annoying as the card works just fine in other systems.  It's having an issue WITH THIS MOTHERBOARD, but they tell me to go to the card manufacturer.  The real problem is NetCell went out of business a few years ago, so they're not available to go to.
    So, the quick and dirty is the manufacture of the only motherboard I've had a problem with concerning this card won't help, and the card manufacture cannot be reached.  I'm hoping someone here may come up with a workaround.
    I'm trying to consolidate down to 1 computer, and I specifically purchased a case and power supply with this RAID migration in mind.  I'm gunna be PISSED if I can't use a RAID array I spent close to a grand for (a couple years ago)!

    MSI continues to blame the chipset or PCI card for the incompatibility (not the motherboard), saying there's nothing they can do.
    Does ANYONE have an idea other than setting aside my RAID array?

    May be someone has already spend a little time with this configuration. the main stuff is my ucsc doesn't think he has disk to boot one even if with CIMC I see the opposite.
    I configure with server conf utility ucs-cxx-scu-3.1.3b.iso with raid1 and as I have 2 UCS C220M3S I do also with Raid0 on another one. the trick is when I install ESXI 5.1 (VMware-VMvisor-Installer-5.1.0-799733.x86_64.iso) during install the setup od VMware detect the disk and install on it but after reboot always same storie no disk !!!
    I don't see where to do something ??? So If someone encountered this problem, my be has already find the trick
    The bios is C220M3.1.4b.0 and I have also  a PCI Broadcom 5709 1Gbps 4 port NIC on slot 2 on both UCSC
    here is the config 2xXeon CPU E5-2650 @2.00Ghz with 64 GB of Ram.

  • PCI ATA 133 RAID Card VS. PCI ATA 133 Controller Card

    Hello,
    I just bought a 300gb HD to put into my QS. I know I need to add another ATA card, but I noticed in stores there is a PCI ATA 133 RAID and a PCI ATA 133 Controller card.
    What is the difference? The ATA 133 Raid card I saw is considerably cheaper. Can I use it to run my 300Gb drive as my startup drive (iDVD issues!)?

    Additional question: I have seen that there are a number of issues with SATA II drives in the early G5. Can you recommend a drive in the 500 GB range that would work well in the Dual 1.8 GHz? A SATA II would be a good option for the future... Thanks!

    Ok, here is my problem:
    I can not, for the life of me, get this PCI-Express raid card to show the raid's BIOS screen (or get my BIOS to see the controller so I can boot off it). Basically this is needed to setup the array, see the array status when the system boots, and boot off the array, etc.. If I was running windows I would be totally screwed for booting off the array but with linux I can boot off of it as I can load the kernel (only the kernel) with the drivers on it from another boot drive and boot off the array.
    I had to put the raid controller in another one of my comps (had to put a PCI vid card in that one as it only had one PCI-E x16 slot) to setup the initial array. The controller works perfectly fine with this mobo (as it is detected/acessible from linux) the only problem is when my system POST's I have no way to manage the RAID array which is quite annoying. I already tried updating to the newest BIOS for my mobo and I think it is something specific with this mobo or something as I had no problems using my sister's comp which is an AM2 socket mobo (also nforce chipset) which is the same brand (MSI).
    Some things I have tried already:
    Upgrading to the newest BIOS version
    Taking out the geforce 8600 gt and putting in  a PCI vid card and trying the raid controller in each of the x16 PCI-E slots (running in x8 mode because the board is set to SLI mode (the raid controller requires atleast a x4 slot).
    Any ideas or am I SOL?
    Also, maybe this should be in the BIOS section?

  • Does a Mac Pro RAID card affect a Sil3132 PCI-E Card ?

    I've got a Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card (Slot4)
    I've put a Sil3132 PCI-E eSATA card into Slot 3.
    I can load drivers (v1.1.9 Silicon Image), and see the eSATA card in the System Profiler
    But I cannot get it to see the hard disks connected to the eSATA bus.
    The cables and disks work with my other Mac that has eSATA but not on the Mac Pro.

    I've got a Mac Pro with the Apple RAID card (Slot4), I've put a Sil3132 PCI-E eSATA card into Slot 3. I can load drivers (v1.1.9 Silicon Image), and see the eSATA card in the System Profiler.

    I have seen system conflicts occur when both the Apple RAID card and SI drivers were installed. It may also be another driver that is causing the issue. To troubleshoot this issue I would install a fresh copy of Mac OS X on a spare HD using the Apple DVD and boot from it. Next, install the SiI-3132 1.1.9 driver, reboot and see if the issue still exists.
    If the issue is resolved you will know something else is causing the problem on the regular boot disk.
    Another possibility is that the SiI-3132 card has the RAID BIOS flashed to the card. This will usually occur if the card is purchased from a PC vendor. In that case, the card may not work unless the Mac SiI 3132 32-bit universal SATARAID5 driver is installed OR the card is flashed back to BASE BIOS.

    Unfortunately, there is no Mac driver uninstaller provided by Silicon image and the different driver versions install several files in different locations. This is why it pays to buy the SI controller from a Mac based reseller that knows what BIOS is installed. If you did not purchase from a good Mac reseller then it is best to test the card with a spare boot disk that you can erase if the wrong driver is installed. I would not want to mess up my main boot disk with these driver tests

  • Promise 378 - RAID 0 - Recovery settings required

    I have a K8T NEO FISR motherboard with two Samsung 80gb SATA drives connected in RAID 0. Things were going along fine for the last several months and suddenly a couple of days ago, something went wrong and one of my drives dropped out of the array. Yes, it was stupid not having a current back-up of my hard drive, but regardless I am now trying to recover my files. They seem to be there, and a couple of different programs I'm playing with seem to be able to recover the files but they are corrupted. In looking at the files, especially JPG's it seems like the way the files are meshed is incorrect, and so I'm trying to find the default settings for the Promise 378 RAID 0 configuration.
    I'm trying a program called  File Scavenger and its asking for:
    First Sector for both drives
    Striping Block Size - I believe this is 128kb per the information displayed in the Promise 378 raid configuration
    Data Blocks per Parity Group
    Boot Sector - defaults to 319 but not sure if this is correct
    From the way the pictures look, I think perhaps the setting that is causing me the most trouble is the First Sector location for the second drive... but being able to confirm all settings would be rather nice also.
    Any help or suggestions are appreciated,

    Yep - both drives got the long version of the Seagate Disk Tools test, and both passed without a hitch. That's five hours of my life I'll never get back.
    Anyway - the Promise TX2300 RAID card arrived yesterday, so I disabled the motherboard Promise in the BIOS, installed the card in a spare PCI slot (my last one!), and connected the drives. It turns out that this card also wont recognise the cards at 3 Mb/s, but they worked instantly when the drive jumper was replaced to limit them to 1.5 Mb/s. Partitioned and formatted I now have a working 2 x 500 Gb RAID 1, though I'm going to leave it a week before I move anything important onto it.... er, 'just in case'.
    To summarise, the motherboard Promise and this new Promise RAID card use different silicon so their implementations could be different, but neither would talk to the drives at 3 Mb/s. I strongly suspect the Seagate drives have a SATA2 problem. I could easily be wrong of course, but I'm off to the Seagate forums now to try and pin it down.

  • Installed a RAID card in my Dell Inspiron 3847. However, the RAID BIOS does not show up and I cannot install Windows 7 to it.

    That is basically a summary of the problem The Dell Inspiron 3847 does not come with RAID, so I tried installing a PCI-express 1x RAID card. However, the RAID BIOS never shows up. The HDDs show up when I install the RAID controller driver in Windows 7 setup, but I cannot install Windows 7. I am using an IOCrest SY-PEX40008 RAID card with a Silicon Image Sil3124 chipset.
    I tried pressing the hotkeys for the RAID BIOS listed in the card's manual, but it seems to just cause bootup to freeze. BIOS also does not seem to detect the RAID card HDDs as boot options.

    On XP that variable points to C:\Documents and Settings\<user>\Application Data\
    "Application Data" in XP/Win2K and "AppData" in Vista/Windows 7 are hidden folders, use %APPDATA% in the File name field

  • Ms6131- cant get PCI ata133 card to load bios

    I have ms6131,v:1.0 , I wish to install my fast ata pci update card for
    133 udma ops. but the manual says for card, set bios to scan SCSI first , but there is no SCSI order in MS BIOS Award ver.v.1.5
    anyone know how to get this SII0680 raid (not using raidpart) to at least boot its own bios at startup.  Test card on another system and it worked ok.
    This is a BIOS option issue. read manual , bios , forum, FAQ, Usenet.

    The "only boot orders" in the bios settings (AWARD 1.6) are

    I have repaired thousands of PC in my 25 years ( old guy who built
    Northstar Z80 CPM systems. )
    I have never seen a bios that would not scan for the upper
    bank of extended BIOS pluggin's.
    The C, D and E0000 bank is scanned on all IBM PC systems.
    This concept was invented for the PC-JR ,by IBM.
    Msi documentations is devoid of any help on ADD in cards ,even
    though, it has this cute little useLESS RISER CARD.
    The Classic , BOOT start order "SCSI/IDE" is pattently missing.
    I tried plugging in every add in card I own into  all slots that
    have a bios extention code Eprom. mostly my many scsi cards.
    NO sign message is displayed , showing the SCAN engine is dead
    or DELETED by MSI on this box.
    No answer from their email.   No surprise there.
    If they do answer , I will post it to USEnet so others can save the hassle of No support and No documentation ( Advanced Configuration).  If I get info , it will go here and usenet.
    The thing I keep going back to is Bios never mentions the RISER card.
    I even tried all permutations of turning off all IDE devices and ports
    and looking for boot messages from ADAPTEC, to no avial.
    What I am doing:
    I use these little boxs for micro servers.  They run cool and use little
    power for 24/7 ops.  I use Linux on them.
    My best unit is Dell GX-150 SFF , ver nice unit but needs smaller
    PCI cards, but at least the Dell functions properly.
    Anyone having a clue to this riddle , thanks 1 million times.
    I suspect that there my be a very well hidden setting , I am missing.
