PCI USB 2.0 card and mass storage on Sawtooth G4

I have an old Sawtooth G4 (350 upgraded to 800, 768mb) that I recently bought a big ext USB drive for. I put a USB 2.0 card in it years ago which has been fine up until now, however the USB connection times out and the Finder crashes with this drive (WD 750GB, which is fine on my MacBook with Leopard and an old iBook with USB 2.0 and Tiger).
I've ruled out it being a problem with Tiger (fine with iBook as mentioned) and the drive works, if slowly, over the internal USB 1.1. I heard mention on these forums that there's an obscure problem with PCI USB 2.0 cards on G4s and I'd appreciate it if anyone has any further information on this. I've been thinking about getting a new card as I can pick up a cheap one with an NEC chipset off eBay pretty cheap (current card is ALI), and I was also considering shoehorning Leopard on to it, however I'm not convinced either would work.
Long term, I'll be replacing the machine but I could do with a solution in the meantime as running the drive off USB 1.1 is a nuisance. Thanks for any suggestions.

Best bet is any card with a NEC PD720100 or PD720101 chipset. Stick with the NEC chip, and try NOT to use drivers, Tiger doesn't need the drivers.
All of these Cards are NEC chipset based

  • PCIe USB 3.0 Card appears in system report, but won't mount drives

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running Mavericks 10.9.2
Bought an Orico PME-4U USB 3.0 4-port PCIe card with the Sata power cable.
Installations seems to go okay -- the card is powered by one of the empty hard drive bays.  The card appears in my computer's System Report as follows:
    NEC USB 3.0:
      Name:          pci1b73,1100
      Type:          USB Superspeed Bus
      Driver Installed:          Yes
      MSI:          Yes
      Bus:          PCI
      Slot:          Slot-3
      Vendor ID:          0x1b73
      Device ID:          0x1100
      Subsystem Vendor ID:          0x1b73
      Subsystem ID:          0x1100
      Revision ID:          0x0001
      Link Width:          x1
      Link Speed:          2.5 GT/s
When I plug in external drives, they receive power from the card, but nothing will mount.
Is it a faulty card?  This is the second USB 3.0 card I've tried unsuccessfully.

Orico tech support had nothing to add beyond installing "GenericUSBXHCI.kext" and trying out different PCI slots.
I've tried two brands of PCIe USB 3.0 cards now and neither work.
I've also checked the SATA power cable and it works with the 4-port Firewire 800 PCIe card I have, so it's not that.
    Anybody have any ideas?

  • What happens to my apps, iTunes card, and iCloud storage if I change my Apple ID?

What happens to my apps, iTunes card, and iCloud storage if I change my Apple ID?

Depends upon what you mean by change.
If you update your existing account to have a new primary email address then you shouldn't lose any of the account's past purchases, balance, or iCloud storage - you may have to log out of the old version of your account by tapping on it in Settings > iTunes & App Store and then log back in with the updated version, and similarly for iCloud (Settings > iCloud > Sign Out).
If you create a new account then your existing account's purchases, balance and iCloud storage will remain tied to the existing account, you can't transfer them to a new account or merge the new account with the old one.

FYI - I tried uninstalling everything BB-related in DevMgmt.msc and restarting the computer, however, under:
'Universal Serial Bus controllers' there is an instance of a
'USB Mass Storage Device' - Properties: 'This device cannot start. (Code 10)'
that will not resolve by any conventional 'Update Driver' means.
Something weird is BB Desktop Software 7.1.0.41 reports no Installed BB Device Software(?)
I didn't change anything locally ... I'm just wondering if TELUS Mobility pushed some kind of an update on me that has screwed things up.
Thanks for any help offered ... FFF

Thank you curve8530curve8330 for stepping up and helping me out ...
I think I'll try re-installing the BB Desktop Software 7.1.0.41 ... the ' ... no  BB Device Software installed ... ' GUI message has me concerned that there has been a Registry disconnect somehow involving the USB driver software registered with BB D. S. 7 ... this would indeed be a Windows 7 problem ... I'll update the thread and give you credit for pointing me in this direction ... if it works.
However, to be clear, I am connecting my 9630 using a USB interface cable connected to a USB 2.0 port on the Win 7 system ... I am not removing the 8GB MicroSDHC card from the phone and then utilizing a MicroSD to SD adapter or SD port ... whatsoever.
And , as for connecting via another computer, now that I have thought about this some more, that may have been what precipitated the problem in the first place ... I had experimentally tried re-connecting the 9630 to an XP Pro SP3 32-bit notebook loaded with BB D. M. 5.0.1.28 ... (after never having done so again since the Win 7 Pro SP1 64-bit / BB D. S. 7.1.0.41 system came into use).  I don't see, off-hand, how that could have caused this issue, however, the coincidence is too large to ignore.

  • 5800 files deleted from mem card in mass storage -...

I have connected my phone via USB mass storage and deleted some MP3s
    however
there is no extra free space showing on the phone (in File Manager)
I had this problem before and it somehow fixed it self after a reboot/sync, but this time it isn't working.
I reallly can't face the hassle of soft/hard reset/card format - life is too short!
Has anyone else fixed this problem

    Hi,
I had the same concern in my N96. All my messages were deleted. This happened thrice with me. I had activated the silent profile & was listening to music in the handset, I received a message & the handset restarted. then all the messages in the handset were deleted. I had around 1300 messages. I tried a lot to retrieve those messages, but couldn't find any solution. I guess you cannot retrieve the deleted messages.

I tried to recover my laptop just now and I follow all the instructions from the User's Manual.

The screen shows something like "Loading RAMDISK". after it finished, the laptop directly restart and it seems nothing happens.

Then the screen shows that "Setup could not determine one or more Mass Storage Devices installed in your computer".
How can I solve this problem?
    Thank You for your help

Yes, I use the original recovery disk from Toshiba and this is my first time.
Just now I open one DOS file from the recovery disk and found that the problem is from the Hard Disk.
My hard disk is Fujitsu MHV2080BH PL. I didn't change the hard drive from the time I buy.
I search the internet and it seems that there are several problems with this hard disk but there seems no solutions yet.

  • StarTech PCI USB 2.0 card

hi, I have a StarTech USB PCI card, # PCI425USB and at first was immediately impressed, but after susbequent failures, I am left wondering why it keeps going "dead?"
I have an MDD PowerMac dual 867 G4 with 1Gb of RAM, but for whatever reason, if the machine sleeps or is in low power mode with either an iPod or an external drive attached, the card stops working and the machine locks up and cannot be woken up unless hard-booted. It's very frustrating as I have to uninstall the card, reboot sans card, shutdown and then reinsall to see any results. There's also a D-link bluetooth adapter and an M-Adio Delta 2496 PCI card.
There must be an easier way. PLEASE HELP.

Thanks for the reply Donny. I've swapped the card in and out of all the available slots, but it pretty much seems to come down to NOT letting my machine go into low power/sleep mode whilst any peripherals (iPod or ext. HD are connected).
I have contacted Star Tech. I guess it's the simple thing of getting what you pay for... The card was only about $12 on CDW.
As long as I make sure not to let my machine go into low power/sleep mode with device attached to that card, I should be cool.
Now, if I could just figure out how to keep my Linksys wireless router from disconnecting my original Airport card in the same G4 DP machine, I'd be set!!
Good thing I just took delivery on my new BlacBook...

Was about to write some file into a folder belonging to some application.
Made this with a copy from external to internal memory alst friday without any problem. But I even could not save a file on the memory card, memory ist locked.
All this is new after some SW Update last  Saturday.

Hi and welcome to the community! Since you're new please be sure that you have checked out our Discussion guidelines.
Did you use the preinstalled app "File Commander" when you tried this or a 3:rd party file manager? Due to new restrictions for the external SD card in Android 4.4 you need to use the preinstalled file manager or use a computer to write to any folder on the external SD.

  • IPhone 4 not recognized when connected to new USB 2.0 card

I have an iphone 4 OS4.1 on a no-name Windows XP Pro (service pack 3) PC with an AMD processor and lots of RAM.
I had the phone working and syncing beautifully with the onboard USB 1.1 but it was slow. So I bought a new PCI USB 2.0 card and installed it. Card is installed and there are no problems according to the status in System Devices.
But the computer does not recognize the iphone when plugged into one of those ports. If I plug it into one of the USB 1.1 ports that are still in the machine, it syncs and works fine. If I plug it into one of the new USB 2.0 ports, the PC shows the window at bottom right saying the device is not recognized. Tried the wizard but it's useless.
    THOUGHTS?????

    Nevermind!!!
It turned out to be a faulty cable! I tried it with a different sync cable and it works fine!
    So disregard the question above.

  • 3rd party USB PCI card and Leopard

I installed a USB 2.0 Compusa Card in my Dual 867 Mac several Years ago, to get USB 2.0 speeds when i got a new Ipod. When 10.4, most t=of the time, early versions not included, I was unable to put the card computer to sleep and then be able to revive it. Leopard fixed that problem, but now the card is losing ports. It is a four port card, and the currently the two inner most ports are not working. The two outer ports are still working. I have had since prior to installing 10.5 my Iphone, Dock, A USB external Drive, for time machine, A USB hub, and my Keyboard attached to the USB 2.0 card. Now the drive disappeared and I am unable to retrieve. Anyone else having this Problem, has anyone had this problem and resolved it. Any help would be appreciated. I am contemplating a New PCI USb 2.0 card, but Not sure if it is the card or Leopard, as i have not had a any problems until 10.5 and 10.5.1 installations.
    Thanks in advance

    Hello.
I have a G4 Dual 1.42GHz (FW800) and an USB 2.0 PCI card (VIA chipset) and it also worked very fine under Tiger. Since this card is sold for the PC market it doesn't bring a driver for Mac OS X.
I went to the VIA site (http://www.via.com.tw/), there I could found they have another site with drivers for almost any OS. This is the address: http://www.viaarena.com/default.aspx?PageID=2
Click on the Mac OS choice in the list and then in USB to get the driver. The driver version is 1.60 and it supports G4 systems ONLY and OS versions: MAC OS X 10.2.x, MAC OS X 10.3.x, MAC OS X 10.4.x. Nothing is said about MAC OS 10.5.x.
Unfortunately it doesn't work in my G4 with Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard). I also tried to use the USB 2.0 PCI card before installing the driver to see if Apple could have done a driver of its own, but it also didn't work.
If your card has a VIA chipset I recommend you write an e-mail to VIA Technologies, Inc. and tell your problem and ask for the update. I did it too.
I hope they can work it out soon.

  • G4 867 DP (MDD) & G4 350 (AGP): PCI USB Card that Supports Deep Sleep?

I am working on upgrading a couple of G4s and wanted to see if I could install a PCI USB 2 expansion card with multiple external ports in both (4 if possible). I'd like to use the same card in both G4s if possible. Both will be running 10.4.11 & 9.2.2. I'd like the card to support Classic if at all possible.
I looked on OWC and first found the Sonnet Allegro; however, its product page notes it does support Deep Sleep so that is out:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/USB2/
Then I found the IOGEAR Hi-Speed USB 2.0 PCI Card and thought I was good to go as OWC does not list any Sleep issues; however, after checking elsewhere (Amazon and other sites) this card has similar G4 Sleep issues.

So where, oh where have all the suitable cards gone?

I’ve did some searching on Google/Google Shopping, Buy.com, Amazon, eBay, & OWC and I present my results as it may help others save time. The most plentiful cards still available appear to be the Belkin, the two IOGear units, and the BAFO.

  • Connecting to mass storage and printers on another router

I have my wireless router connected to another router that router is connected to the internet. My wireless connection works fine getting to the internet, but I am unable to see the other items connected to the first router. This would be my network printer and mass storage. What can I do?

Windows uses a protocol called SMB to connect to network shares. You will need to route ports 139, 445, and possibly 137 between the 2 networks. Unless you have a specific reason I would dump the non-wireless router. Having 2 routers is asking for problems and making your network overly complicated.

  • PC won't recognize BlackBerry as mass-storage device.

I have a Curve 8320 with a 4-Gb SanDisk micro SD card.  Due to difficulties installing BlackBerry Media Sync, I'm trying to just manage my media (music, no photos or videos at the moment) simply by using my BlackBerry as a mass-storage device.  I understand that when I connect the BlackBerry to the computer with the micro SD card in it, the BlackBerry is supposed to prompt me to enable mass-storage mode.  However, this is not happening.  I can't get the BlackBerry to appear as a mass-storage device in the Computer folder on my PC.  I can tell the BlackBerry is indeed interfacing with the computer, for Desktop Manager is able to interact with it.  I've gone into the Media Card option in Options and enabled media-card support and mass-storage mode and told the BlackBerry to auto-enable mass-storage mode when connected, and I've formatted the card with the BlackBerry as well, but still I've had no luck.

  • Windows Drivers cannot view Blackberry as a mass storage device

    Hello!
I had a hard time finding the right category to post this question to so pardon me if it has been misplaced.
I have a rather pressing issue with my Blackberry Curve 9300 for a few months now. I have scoured a number of fourms (including this one!) and discovered similar issues with other Blackberry curve owners. Unfortunately, none of their solutions seemed to solve my problem.
    Here is the issue:
I have a computer that is running Windows 7 SP 1 (32-Bit) with the latest version of  the Desktop Manager Software. Now, the Desktop Manager successfully communicates with my Blackberry.  However, as others have expressed, my computer then detects the USB component of my Blackberry as a "RIM Mass Storage Device" and is unable to find the compatiable driver. As a result, I am unable to utilize the Mobile Modem or Media features of the Desktop Manager. Now this may sound like just any ohter RIM Mass Storage Device problem but I assure you that there is a twist!
I have tried multiple methods to resolve this problem:
Clean uninstall and re-install of the Desktop Manager Software
Downgrading to an older version of the Desktop Manager Software
Installing the corresponding RIM USB Drivers
Deleting the RIM Mass Storage Device from the Device Manager
    Reseting my BlackBerry Curve
Windows Update (I installed Service Pack 1 long after I first noticed this problem)
Consulting the Solution Articles on the RIM and Windows Support websites for fixes
Now, I have another computer that operates on Windows XP Home Edition (SP3). It also has the latest version of the Desktop Manager installed. However, it can successfully communicate with my phone at all levels (Mobile Modem, etc.). When I investigated the Desktop Manager, I found that the phone was being viewed as a "RIM Blackberry SD USB Device," as it should. Thus, I know that my Media Card settings on my phone are configured properly.
I also noticed that the USB Device was utilizing disk.sys. My computer operating Windows 7 also has the disk.sys file, which is used successfully by my other USB devices. However, if I try to manually associate that driver with the RIM Mass Storage Device my computer objects, stating that the driver is not compatable with my device. So, I tried to apply another of other drivers that I was able to successfully associate my USB Flash Drives in the past (USBSTOR.sys,etc.) since the phone essentially must be viewed as a mass storage device by the computer. Unfortunately, it refuses to successfully associate itself with those drivers as well. But, based on my observations from my computer operating on Windows XP, I know that the computer needs to view my Blackberry as a Disk Drive in the Device Manager.
What makes this situation even more bizzarre is that when I restart my computer, I notice that right as the Windows 7 OS is loaded, my blackberry asks me if I would like for it to be viewed as a mass storage device, for media only, or simply charge. That is the general response I expect once the Desktop Manager is loading. However, a few moments later, the phone then announces that it is unable to charge in the USB port it is connected to.
I am curious if anyone else has had a similar problem with the acutal Windows 7 Drivers being unable to be associated with their Blackberry. Also, I am concerned if my disk.sys file is actually corrupted. I think I might also be relevant to mention that my computer had a number of problems detected other USB devices in the past but by deleting the system drivers I was able to have them communicate with the computer once more. Unfortunately, from what I understand, disk.sys is a critial file during the startup sequence of the Windows Operating System. Thus, I don't believe my previous methods will suffice nor if there is anyway to reinstall disk.sys since the computer was purchased with Windows 7 as its original operating system.
Thank you in advance for any advice!

    Yes indeed
I usually try and stop this windows (7) update stuff because half my remote sensing software gives up every time - but yes indeed this time having just moved house there was a mistake and a load of ms **bleep** got installed and sadly when i thought to see if that was the route of the problem i discovered i had no restore point of any use
SO i suppose we could say this is all my fault really because I left ms into my computer again - aaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh

  • D800 file compatibility:  Has anyone experienced problems with loading D800 files onto the iPad using the camer connector kit?  I have tried both RAW and JPEG using SDHC and CF cards and the iPad(3) doesnt recognise any of the files.

Has anyone experienced problems with downloading Nikon D800 files to the iPad3 using the camer connector kit?  I have tried .RAW and JPEG (of various sizes) on both SD and CF cards, but the iPad doesn't recognise the files.
I have seen various forums discussing Lightroom and PSE updates that are required to process .NEF files but I can't find anything on the iPad/camera connector issue.
I dont have any problem if I put the SD card straight into the SD slot in my iMac and Aperture will process the files fine, but I would really like to be able to download and view files on the move on the iPad.
    Any advice appreciated?
PS - saw something that suggested the iPad had a maximum file size of 16mb for photos, not sure if this is correct, but I have tried smaller JPEG files and they still aren't recognised.

If your camera supports both PTP and Mass Storage Device modes, it may be necessary to use both modes to import all media content.
If some files do not import as expected using one mode, try switching to the other mode and importing again.
Note: Some cameras may refer to PTP as Pictbridge or PTP/Pictbridge.
