PCI wireless possible?  RAM location for 233MHz Power Mac G3?

Hello All!
I just added a free Power Mac G3 233MHz to my collection! For fun, I want to install 10.2.8, add 768 MB RAM, 40GB HD, PCI USB 2.0, PCI ATI 9200 and a PCI Macwireless or Aria wireless card. I want to keep the 233MHz CPU! My first question is, how do I install RAM? I pulled the cover and thought it would be in plain sight like the PCI area. Also, I found two PCI wireless cards online that will work with the 233MHz G3 under 10.2.8 using Airport software. Has anyone had luck using wireless? I searched the forum and found no results.
Thanks in advance! I'm glad to be part of the Beige G3 community!

Since you have a good collection of Macs already, maybe think about what you want to use this machine for, and what upgrades you really need. The ATI 9200 may be overkill, since the stock 233MHz CPU will not really be fast enough to run any of the real-time 3D graphics apps that would require the 9200, however, you would be able drive multiple monitors, one-DVI & one-VGA, from the 9200, in addition to the built-in Macintosh video output. What specific apps do you want to run on it?
To use the built-in Macintosh video output with a standard VGA monitor you need a Macintosh to VGA adapter. There is an on-board VRAM slot that you can fill with a 4MB module to increase the color depth and resolution options to use a larger monitor on the built-in video card, if you decide you want to use the built-in video rather than a PCI video.
It might be hard to find, but maybe you could get a used ATI Radeon Mac Edition for a little less money, but if you want to buy a new PCI video with warranty, I think the 9200 is the only option.
One thing that is abysmally slow in the G3's is the on-board ATA33 which actually runs at about half-speed of what is expected. You are lucky to get 16 MB/sec throughput max. A good alternative, if you have the spare PCI slot, would be to add an ATA66 PCI card or better, which will also add Master/Slave support, but requires some creative ATA-cable origami to reach from the PCI card to the hard drives in the expansion bays, but it is possible. You could get roughyl 40 MB/sec from an ATA66 PCII drive. Booting and launching apps would be not quite twice as fast, but definitely noticeable.
The extra RAM you plan to get will definitely help, but if you lack enough RAM both OS 9 and OS X will use virtual memory swap space on the hard drive, so having that faster through put will also help improve general performance.
But, if it's just for fun and messing around this may not be an important issue for you anyway. Just something to consider.
You might be able to use an external wireless USB device (not sure if drivers are available for 10.2 for any on the market today) or wireless Ethernet adapter (no drivers needed, but still limited to slower 10BaseT speed on the G3), to free up one of the PCI slots for the ATA66 card. If the built-in Ethernet is still functional, can you just run a wire?
If you can get 10.3 I'd recommend that, 10.2 just seems to have been not quite as stable, but I really can't remember if that may have been due to Norton Utilities that I was also using at the time.

  • What kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GH

    hi there,
I have for sometime now a "Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5", and recently I have been thinking to get an Airport extreme wireless card with a bluetooth on it, which could work on my machine.
I have already try to deal with apple representatives and Apple sales people to give me a hand on the matter and so far is been a nightmare to approach this guys, tired of wasting time and effort, so that is way I am posting a topic on this section to see if you guys could give a hand on the matter.
All what I would like to know is what kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 (version 10.4.11) and where I could buy one on line to install myself.
This is the mac unit I have.
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5.
    Hardware Overview:
    Machine Name: Power Mac G5
    Machine Model: PowerMac11,2
    CPU Type: PowerPC G5 (1.1)
    Number Of CPUs: 2
    CPU Speed: 2 GHz
L2 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 4.5 GB
    Bus Speed: 1 GHz
    Boot ROM Version: 5.2.7f1
    Thanks for you time.
    regards

You're welcome. Funny how Apple works isn't it? If it's any consolation, that Airport/Bluetooth card doesn't show up on the Apple U.S. store either. I don't think they ever intended it to be a user installable part, so perhaps that's why they don't offer it for sale. Do you have any Apple Authorized Service providers in your area? I'd think they'd be able to order the card as a replacement part.
Can you give a little more detail or a link to the gadget you're referring to? It sounds like a USB dongle to enable Wi-Fi, but that must be a third party solution, since I don't believe Apple ever offered something like that.

  • I need a wireless usb adaptor for a Power Mac G4... any suggestions? (needs to be compatible)

I need a wireless usb adaptor for a Power Mac G4... any suggestions? (needs to be compatible)

With Mac OS X 10.3 or higher, a number of USB Wi-Fi adapters would be possible to use. However, for an earlier operating system, a wireless Ethernet bridge (such as the examples below) can be a better (and sometimes the only) option. A wireless Ethernet bridge does not normally require special drivers, and can thus be used with almost any Ethernet-equipped computer.

  • Linksys Wireless Card (Linksys Router) in G4 Power Mac works fine until...

Linksys Wireless Card (Linksys Router) in G4 Power Mac works fine until...
new software upgrades on the 14 August 2006 (yesterday) which includes Airport 4.2.
The Linksys wireless PCI card (WMP54G) was installed just under a year ago with no problems. There was no need to install drivers, the Apple Mac recognised it and used it as a wireless card. I was browsing the internet last night (14 August) and the software updates downloaded in the background. Once it finished downloading, it requested for a re-start. I carried on browing the internet and then switched off my machine and went to bed.
When I turned on my computer in the morning, the wireless card no longer activates. The computer recognises there is a card but there is no connection to the router (meaning no internet). The router settings have not changed at all.
I believe it could be the Airport 4.2 update has interfered with the Linksys Card, but I'm not sure. I've been through all the Assist functions etc and there is no luck. It does seem that the big update released on the 14th August has played its part.
Any opinions and assistance on getting the card back to normal, and if possible assistance in removing the new updates to previous drivers/settings.
    Thanks people.
G4 Power Mac Dual Processor Mirrored Doors   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Sorry, I do not have a solution for you but I have the same problem upgrading from Jaguar to Panther (on my home machine not listed which is a G3 b&w). Now my WMP54G doesn't see any wireless network (I used to be able to see several in the 'hood), and Apple Profiler recognizes the card. Apple updater changed the Airport system files, I believe.
Is it possible to find the old Airport software and install over current system to get it working again? I doubt Apple still offers the old airport software, but if someone has it, maybe it can be installed with Pacifist.
We need some wireless help here, community.

  • I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card

I have an older Power Mac G5 Quad, and my video card just went out. I am trying to find a video card that will work for my Power Mac. I have duel screens but I can't seem to find the appropriate video card. The serial number on my computer is: RM620603R6W. Apple won't help me because the computer is older than suggested. Please give me the exact video card that will work best for my computer.

Hi Mike, make sure the card has Mac ROM, or is a PC card with Mac ROMs flashed to it...
G5 PCIe options are listed here:

  • Trying to buy OS X Tiger for my Power Mac

I no longer have my installation CD for my Power Mac G3. Can I just buy an OS X 10 CD from ebay and use it to wipe out and re-install the OS on my computer? It says it is once licence, how do I know it hasn't already been used?

If this is the Blue and White G3 tower, before installing OS X 10.4 Tiger, you need to run a Firmware update for this Mac. Not sure how to locate this for you on Apple's website because any older links to the firmware updated software no longer work.
    You need this firmware update.
PM G3 (Blue and White) Firmware Update 1.1
IF your PowerMac G3 is a beige G3, the highest OS X version you can install without special helper software is OS X 10.2 Jaguar.
OS X 10.3 Panther can be installed with the help of this app. OS X 10.3.9 Panther is really, real world end of line for OS X versions to be installed. OS X 10.4 Tiger will not work with beige color PowerMac G3 models.

  • Where can I purchase a runway card for a power mac G5 A1177 ?

I am searching for a runway card for a power mac G5 A1177 thats cheap.

"Where" questions are more easlily answered if you tell us your approximate geographic loation. That way you won't get links to vendors who cannot ship to your location.
That said, here is a US vendor:

  • How can i use my smart TV as a second monitor for my Power mac (2010) via HDMI cable? i've made the connection but no options show in system prefs display.

How can i use my smart TV as a second monitor for my Power mac (2010) via HDMI cable? i've made the connection but no options show in system prefs display.
    the computer:Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.9.5), 2 x 2.66 Ghz 6-Core intel Xeon
    the TV: LG Smart tv

The Mac uses a highly-parameterized universal Driver for every display. The parameters are set at certain times when a query is sent to your display. The display MUST answer with its name and capabilities, or the screen stays dark. A TV set that is off or "not paying attention" because it is set to a different port when the query occurs will rarely answer, and so will often remain dark.
You can use tools in the System Report to see whether your display has been detected at all. If it has, the report will look something like this, but its name will appear:
The times when the query is sent are:
    • at Startup
    • at wake from sleep
    • when the Mac-end of the cable is inserted
    • when using the Option ( Detect Displays ) button in displays preferences

  • Can I use a MacBook pro as an external display for a Power Mac G5

My problem is that the Studio display from 2004 is beginning to fail.  What can I use as a replacement display?  It seems that the Thunderbolt displays are out of the question, and some of the other new displays may require an Intel-based OSX.
So, assuming I buy a MacBook Pro in the future, I'd like to continue to keep the Power Mac G5 as a back-up.  Can I use the screen on the MacBook Pro as a display for the Power Mac, and if so, how?

Depending on what you use your computers for, the concept of using the screen of a MacBook as a display for a desktop Power Mac is about as poor an idea as I've heard in a long, long time.
    Thanks for the chuckle.
PS.— There are plenty of inexpensive screens you can use instead.

I have Final Cut Studio V1 - the PPC/Intel V5/5.1 cross-grade version, which would suit your requirements perfectly. (I have it for sale at present down here).
If you keep looking, you're sure to find a similar second hand copy in your area, without the need to upgrade your graphics card.
I'd go for Final Cut Pro as above over any version of Express. FCP has the full version of LiveType - not the truncated version that was released later on.

  • Do I need to buy a particular 10.5 Leopard DVD for my Power Mac G5

I have been having problems with my Power Mac G5, which can only be resolved by reinstalling leopard, and since I don't have the DVD, I have been looking for a 10.5 Leopard DVD for my Power Mac G5. However I have noticed that some discs say they only work for a particular kind of mac ( which is true, since I attempted installing leopard with a macbook pro dvd, which did not turn out well ). Do I have to look for a 10.5 Leopard DVD that is particularly for a Power Mac G5? If so, where can I find one?

Yes, Gray Install Discs, the ones that come with Macs are Machine specific.
    You need the Retail version.
Trouble is Apple no longer sells it, check eBay & such for the Retail version, not the Gray Discs...

So far, I haven't been able to determine the answer from Apple's support search or other search methods. I do not have an original user's manual but the one I found on the net doesn't specify the correct power cord.

  • Wireless card for dualcore power macs

How come if I were to order a Dual core 2.3 GHz Power Mac from the Apple store with a wireless/bluetooth adapter, it would ship in 3 to 5 days, but when I bought the same system from an Apple retail store a month ago, I am still unable to get the wireless/bluetooth adapter?
While I'm asking questions, why were the salespeople at the Apple store so poorly-informed about a new product that they sold me the wireless and bluetooth adapters for the older version of the G5 and only figured out their mistake when trying to perform the install? Also, why am I now unable to return my still shrinkwrapped Airport Express, which is useless to me now? And does Apple really expect people to call retail stores 2x a week to find out when they might finally get a part in so that I can drag my mac in to have them install it because it's "not a user serviceable part"?
Glad to see Apple is now competing with the larger computer companies on customer satisfaction...

When I got my Quad from the refurb store apple told me the extreme card would be compatible, I still double checked it with apple technical support. When it arrived I had everything purchased, set up and ready to go (dual monitors, 4 gig ram, express BS and 2x AP extreme (1 in the mac downstairs). Then I found out I needed the kit.
I too live miles away from the nearest apple engineer, it's a 320 mile round trip to get the upgrade installed. When I told apple how disapponted I was they insisted on checking the telephone recordings.
After 7 days of waiting a manager calls to tell me "the salesman hadn't said it would come pre-installed as the AP/BT upgrade" (I could have told him that) and when I explained the situation he offered me a refund. I asked him what I would do with the opened 4 gig of 533 ram, the extreme card, the monitors and the express BS. He said he was sure I could find some machine to put the ram in. Very understanding - not.
As a result I need an external wireless alternative and seeing as I'm just wasting my time with apple I wandered if anyone has any tried and tested recommendations (baring in mind I don't want to invalidate my warranty).
