PCIe-8183 users, what Micro ATX or Mini ITX motherboard/PC works to get full [0,255] PCI bus enumeration???

Do you get a full range of PCI buses [0,255]? I cannot find a Micro or Mini system that will work. My limit is [0,3e] (dec 0-62 buses) using NI's bus enumeration utility: MXIeBusDetect_64bit.exe from the site: Determining the Number and Range of PCI/PCI Express Root Bus Devices
Thanks in advance!

  • HTPC Mini-ITX motherboard - Which CPU/APU to choose?

    Hi there!
I will soon start to build a HTPC setup, which will be used for 1080p (H264) playback through the onboard HDMI port, as well as audio playback through onboard toslink S/PDIF.
What to choose, Amd Fusion or Intel Atom /w the ION 2 GPU? I expect that the GPU part will be able to handle most of the H264 decoding, and that the platform will be stable and fully functional.
I already own a Asus E35M1-I mini-ITX motherboard which i currently use for my headless file server, but it seems to be somewhat unstable, and the network interface is missing some throughput (550Mbit/s). This causes uncertainty about if it is smart to choose the Amd Fusion setup.
    Any input/tips?
(This is not strictly related to Arch Linux, but the system will run Arch Linux, so i guess it should be okay to ask here in this forum)

As for your problems with your Asus board, is your BIOS up-to-date?
Sadly there are no BIOS updates other than the version shiped with the motherboard. I think I will just have to wait and see if Asus releases a new version. I will take a deeper look into the article tonight, thanks for the link!

I don't think you can choose a wrong solution these days. All the recent chipsets are perfectly capable of decoding 1080p. I myself am an intel-gpu-fan, because of the good and open source drivers. If your pc will be positioned in your living room, you should definitely investigate the noise levels of the onboard fans, PSU fans and case fans (not to mention the noise of the hard disk(s)).
That's why I have chosen to make my file server (which is in the basement) play/decode all the content and stream it over the network to a PS3, but there are many passively cooled DLNA-clients out there...
Regarding noise, i will probably use a cheap SSD/my old 4GB CF-card as local storage, and the motherboard will be one of the fanless versions. External laptop-style PSU. The noise level will not be a problem.
Regarding a pure DLNA client: I want to be able to do other things on the HTPC in the future. And for now, it will in addition to XBMC run MPD for music and LIRC for IR remote control support. If i just wanted it for video playback, i could have easily gone for a DNLA set top box with a lot less hassle

I'm considering an E350 setup myself, especially since the Intel offerings do not support 24 Hz, and that's a showstopper for me. That would mean either I'd need to get an Atom/Ion combo (which is too underpowered for my taste when it comes to the CPU) or get a Sandy Bridge with an nVidia card, which means higher power usage. From what I gather, Zacate should be a bit smoother than the Atom setups, and a bit more power-efficient as well.
Clvn, if network performance is your concern (and I doubt 550 Mbps is a bottleneck for what you're doing, but then again, I don't know what else your setup is doing while it's streaming HD stuff), there's only one solution: get an Intel gigabit card. Or you can go for a full Intel platform as well though, if that 24 Hz problem is not an issue for you.
I did not know anything about the 24Hz frequency limitation, I have not paid any attention to it. I think i will have to read a little bit about it. Thanks for the input about that!
SInce the E350 platform performs better, it's sad that it seems a bit unstable (at least that is my experience so far..). Hopefully this will be better with driver updates.
About the network speed: That motherboard will continue to be used as a file server for a while longer (with the onboard NIC), untill it will be used as a dedicated firewall with a dual gbit NIC (at least that is the plan). The 550Mbit/s throughput is not a problem, but it seems a bit strange that it does not perform better. I've changed the TP and the port at the switch, but still got the same available bandwidth. That too will probably be fixed with either a BIOS update or a driver update.

And zenlord made me remember to ask you what you will use the HTPC for, since in some cases a networked media player like a WD TV Live! might suffice, too.
I will do some reading at phoronix about the AMD Fusion driver support. And regarding devices like WD TV, i would like to have a fully functional pc. MPD and LIRC will be used on regular basis.
After all the feedback in the thread, i think the Intel/VDPAU option will be a lot more safe and stable. I will just have to read a bit about what the missing 24Hz support from Nvidia's side.
If i choose Intel Atom/ION, i think this Asus card will do the trick: http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_ … /AT5IONTI/

  • DIY/DYO MediaCenter PC (mini-itx mobo)

    Hi,
I wasn't really sure which subforum should I post this to, but anyway...
The other day (well, actually night) I kind off got obsessed with the idea of buying a mini-itx motherboard and do some really custom low-end PC. The main use would be to have mp3s and movies stored so I could play them with a remote. Of course I'll  have other uses for it, but that would be mainly it.
So, next monday I'll be getting an Intel D945 GCLF motherboard. After that I'll start with a 1G DDR2 667MHz memory. I've got a 350W PSU lying there already, so I'll use that one. Also there's an extra CD drive at home, so I can start by trying a LiveCD.
What I'm getting at with this is that I'm going to install Arch on it, because I think that, even if other distributions would be more suitable, I can't help it: I wan't a KISS distro like Arch on it, so I can tweak it as I want.
I'm hoping I can make it boot fast (so it actually feels like an appliance, not a PC that requires a keyboard to make it boot if something goes wrong).
My idea is to make a case from scratch with spare parts from other leftover ATX cases from work. I'll try to make a cube-case from that.
Regarding software, I'll try xbmc and elisa (they both look great, but I don't know if the hardware will take it).
I'll upload pics from the project as I get it going, if you archers are interested.

Well, I've got a little more serious with the project.
    I got the mobo:
(the Intel manual only serves structural purposes)
Yesterday I received a 320G Samsung SATAII 16MB 7200RPM drive, and a OCZ DDR2 80MHz 1G RAM. I took the necessary cables from empty cases and a PSU I had laying there. Everything hooked:
I forgot to connect the P4 connector, so when I turned it on, it didn't worked =b
After fixing that, I got into the BIOS:
    that's a really professional look =b
I didn't installed anything yet since I'm missing a cable, but I'm going to wait until I build the case... too much hastle to install it like that.
I thought about it, and the case is going to be made of acrylic, with some metal parts taken from old cases (to make it tougher). I'm using Google Sketchup to design the case. My idea is to take this general design and adapt it to this bigger PSU, and the regular DVD and HD drives it will be using.
The last component I will buy (not for the moment) will be a wireless PCI card.
Will post some pictures of the design when it's more mature.

  • FM2-A85XMA-E35 Micro-ATX Standoff hole problem

I am a new builder(2nd build) I have the FM2-A85XMA-E35 Micro-ATX board that has 6 standoff holes in it. The case I purchased the NZXT Source 210 Elite calls for 9 standoffs for the Micro ATX form factor(U1-U9). I guess I just need to remove the 3 standoffs that don't match up with the holes.  Kind of a serious oversight especially for newbies that might just go ahead and put the board in and risk shorting the board because NZXT has this kind of set up for Micro ATX.
I wonder how many new builders messed up their boards because of this problem?  Any insight or experience with this issue would be appreciated.
    Thanks

the  NZXT Source 210 Elite is a ATX case! you can tell that by there being 7 expansion slots for PCI at the rear!
a micro-ATX board will fit as it has the holes needed for multiple form factors (ATX, MICRO-ATX ) and its up to the user for determining what standoff positions are needed (they put them all in as most motherboards are ATX and Micro-ATX is a less common standard as it tends to be used for HTPC's (Home Theatre Personal Computer's) and all you are meant to do it reference the holes needed and see if they line up and remove the ones that are not needed)
its not a oversight its just not that convenient for your Micro-ATX board as its the less common standard of the 2 your case is made for so its not in that configuration as standard its in the more common ATX one!
I will give you some advice here for what to do in the future!
1: when you Buy a motherboard and take it out the box place it on a piece of paper and mark the holes it uses to be mounted to a case then punch holes through them! (that way you can use the piece of paper to see if any of the standoffs are out of place that are pre-installed and remove the ones that are out of place)
2: DO NOT put a computer into a case before you have done a test power up and post check outside the Case on a non conductive surface (Eg on the motherboard Box or a piece of wood) (put the CPU, RAM, Video card in and plug up the PSU to make sure it actually gets to the BIOS and to asking for a OS) as it will save you headaches if something doesn't work as it is not in the case yet all screwed in place)
3: only once you have determined everything works then put it together into the case and do a quick double check that you did not miss any standoffs before you start securing things down!

  • We need more AM3+ Micro-ATX mobos!

Like the title says, "We need more AM3+ Micro-ATX mobos!".
It seems that all the Manufactures have discontinued all of them. All we are getting now is FM2 for the APU's. APU's are cool and all but they just do not really compare to the FX when it comes to some things. Like say Gaming. Ever since the manufactures have stopped making the AM3/AM3+ MicroATX mobos, this hole has been made in the market for small form factor Gaming with AMD. We are pretty much left with searching through leftovers and it is becoming increasingly harder to find a good Micro-ATX that supports AM3/AM3+ CPU's. You know what is even worse is that people on Ebay know all this and are cashing in on this fact by selling used ones at cost. Heck I could by a newer full ATX mobo for less than some of the older Micro-ATX AM3/AM3+ mobo's on Ebay and even some other sites. All the normal sites like NewEgg, Tigerdirect, Amazon, and other sites that sell PC Components just basically have the older 700 Series mobos. The few 800 series that they do have all have 700 series SouthBridges. One of the problems with that is that they do not support a few features that we look for today in the newer boards. Like say Sata 3 (6Gb/s). You need 800 series or higher for that. It is just basically hard to find a decent Micro-ATX with all the specs that we desire nowadays. :(
    Anyways....
You know what I would really love to see is some 900 Series Micro-ATX mobo's. Like say a 990FX, 990x, or 970. Heck I would not even care if it was that 980G which is just a re-branded 880G. I could care less if it had on-board graphics or not, just as long as it was a Micro-ATX. If I am gaming I would more than likely just add a separate GPU anyways. Heck the 980G would allow for on-board graphics as it is has Radeon HD 4250. Thing is nobody made any mobo's with it for some odd reason. Maybe because they already had the 880G. What ever the case, we are pretty much stuck in a rut now if we are looking for a small form factor AM3/AM3+ mobo.
So what do you all say MSI?
Would you all be willing to do this?
If not then why not just do another production run of some older 880G/850 AM3+ Micro-ATX mobo's again? At least to fill that hole in the market that we have now.
Anyways it is just a thought.

Ask MSI if you want to complain or suggest a new product. This is a Users-to-Users Forum. As FM2 with cpu integrated gpu replaced AM3+ for small systems with onboard gpu that will none the less be most likely useless. It's AMD's decision.

  • MSI 915GM-FR Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 915G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard

Yes, because of recent turbulence   considering some of the ram I recently bought, I am looking for different Ram that is compatible with this board:      MSI 915GM-FR Socket T (LGA 775) Intel 915G Micro ATX Intel Motherboard
I know that some places it says that the voltage is 2.5, but could I push it a bit with 2.6  ?  because I really dont want to buy a no-name brand for what I want.  However, if not, thats the way it is...

Most boards have the DDR voltage set to 2.6V I believed. So if you put in a 2.5V rated DDR, it will still work. Undervoltage may not. You can always refer to MSI Test Report on DDR http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_trp_detail.php?UID=606
but those are not complete list.

  • Users and Groups on Mac Mini Running Snow Leopard

I recently purchased a Mac Mini Server. I have the internal drives setup as 500gb RAID. An external 2TB is connected to the firewire partitioned into two volumes - one for TimeMachine and one for media, etc. I have loaded iLife on the machine.
My intent to have the Mini act primarily as media center for movies, etc, with the HDMI connected to our Yamaha receiver (and Samsung TV monitor). I am would like to also sync our iPhones with this Mini (since it will have the lion's share of the media loaded on it) and have it act as a repository for TimeMachine backups from our Macbook Pros.
I need some assistance on how to best set up the users and groups on the Mini to manage the users on the Macbook Pros, and provide a relatively seamless access to the media when it's time to listen to music or watch a show. Can someone give me a basic outline one what to do?

The building had a scheduled power outage to replace an electric meter, but the machine was unplugged at the time.
When I look in the System Profiler > Network, the only active services listed are: AirPort, Bluetooth DUN, and Firewire.

  • Problems with Micro atx mobo

I just got a new micro atx mobo just to replace my older one (it didnt have a flippin AGP slot!), so i put in all of my old components, and after i would get past the BIOS, it would just restart the whole comp. this would go on endlessly. im not sure exactly what happened then, but now even when i start it up, the display doesnt show at all. i currently have a 200W psu but i thought that even if just the cpu, mem, monitor were plugged in alone, there wouldnt be a problem with power, considering how its the same psu that powered all the same parts full scale.
anybody have any tips so i can get this mobo/ nvidia 6600gt up and running, so i can get more than 25 fps in half life 2?

Probably insufficient powers. Try a more powerful PSU and see if problem replicates.
I would also need you to list out your full system specs as what you've given is too limited

  • Micro-ATX problem

Hi there. Recently I bought a new graphics card: Nvidia FX5600. Upon finding out that my motherboard only supported AGP 4X I resolved to buy a new motherboard, since the FX5600 seemed to be only running as good as my old MX440. So I bought an MSI Micro-ATX, under the assumption that it would solve all my problems. Unfortunately, as it always is with computers, this was not the case. I didn't want to fork out the cash to have an expert fit it, and since I thought I knew enough about computers I fitted it myself.
    Now.
I got everything plugged in. Everything was working fine when suddenly KABLAM! the computer restarts halfway through booting up. I adamantly retried and noticed a blue screen with a whole lot of white writing flash up JUST before it reboots. Since I can't read the screen before the computer reboots, it's hard to know exactly what the problem is.. So I'm asking here if anyone has any idea.
    I have:
    AMD Athlon 2000XP+ CPU
    NVidia FX5600 Graphics
A standard cd drive, and burner coming from one IDE
An 80G Seagate Barracuda 7200 and a 120G some other HDD on the other IDE
Then of course a standard floppy drive.
For RAM i HAD a 512 DDR Ram, but its not DIMM so instead I borrowed a 256 PC-333 StarRam DDR off a friend so the computer wouldnt go without.
Some friends have suggested that the conflict may be between the motherboard and the graphics card.. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Cheers,
                Athius.

  • How can I tell users what the password complexity requirements are in OWA 2013?

I'm writing this question so I can also provide the answer, because I couldn't find an answer online anywhere.
The goal was to edit the password change page to put the complexity requirements on it so users know what's expected when they change their password in OWA (Exchange 2013).  I wanted to customize a web page somewhere to tell users what characters they
needed to put in their password to be accepted when we have the complexity requirement turned on in the default domain policy.  (The extra words are to help search engines find this when people are searching for a solution to this.)
All I could find were outdated instructions for 2010 and 2007, which did not work.
    Answer forthcoming...

The answer I came up with was to edit the "ChangePassword.ascx" file found at C:\Program Files\Microsoft\Exchange Server\V15\ClientAccess\ecp\PersonalSettings as below:
    First, find:
             <div>
                <asp:Label ID="lblPersonalSettingPasswordAfterChange" Text="<%$ Strings:OwaOption.PersonalSettingPasswordAfterChange %>" runat="server"  umc-slabdescription="true"
    aria-hidden="false" cssclass="dscrptn"></asp:Label>
            </div>
Then, right after that, add your verbage within another DIV tag as such (you can even use an unordered/bulleted list):
    <div>
    PASSWORD REQUIREMENTS<br />
    Your new password must:
    <ul><li>be at least 8 characters long,</li>
    <li>contain at least one letter (a,b,C,D), </li>
    <li>contain at least one number (1,2,3,4), </li>
<li>contain at least one symbol (.*#$@&),</li>
    <li>NOT contain your name, </li>
<li>and not have been used before.</li></ul>
    <br />
    </div>
This works if you're choosing to go change your password, but I still need to see if it works when a change is required at first login - that feature is broken again but I'm hoping CU3 will fix it.  Seems MS breaks that feature with every other update.

You need to create a user account for your wife (or yourself depending on who has the current user account). When syncing, each of you should sign in as a separate user, login to iTunes and then sync. I had this problem when my sister got an iPhone. When we did her initial sync, everything on my iPhone showed up on hers. Apple gave me this solution.
