PCIe cards useful for editing capabilities?

Other than cards used to add RAID or additional hard drives, are there any other PCIe cards people find useful for video editing or effects work?  The reason I ask – I am considering two different motherboards for my PC upgrade to i7-4770K.  One will effectively have no free PCIe slots when the build is done, while the other will have one free PCIe slot (an x4).  I am not including the two secondary x16 sized slots on these boards in my count, because they cannibalize the primary video card slot, so I would rather not use them.
Anyway, currently I don’t use any additional PCIe cards for editing.  So I am not sure if I should care if there are any extra empty PCIe slots available.

Thanks for the suggestions.  Also, I wonder how often Firewire is used these days?  I have some older family videos on tapes, recorded digitially and accessible via Firewire, from a port on the camcorder.  So if I get a board without Firewire, looks like I would need to install a Firewire card into a PCIe slot, if I wanted to edit those tapes.  Otherwise, I don't see as many products today using Firewire.

  • PCI Card Driver for 2009 Mac Pro

I just got a 2.66 GHz Quad Core Intel Xeon from one of my cousins. It has a PCI card in it, but the card has no driver installed. Running System Information, under PCI Cards, there is a graphics controller installed, as well as a SCSI Bus Controller, which I'm assuming is the PCI Card, with four slots to hook up eSATA drives.
Anyways, I'm having a hard time finding a driver for this card. If anyone could help, I'd be very appreciative. I used the Vendor ID to do a Google search and found the manufacturer's website, but they have no drivers for Apple.
    Thank you!
    Type:          SCSI Bus Controller
      Driver Installed:          No
      MSI:          No
      Bus:          PCI
      Slot:          Slot-2
      Vendor ID:          0x11ab
      Device ID:          0x7042
      Subsystem Vendor ID:          0x11ab
      Subsystem ID:          0x7042
      Revision ID:          0x0002
      Link Width:          x4
      Link Speed:          2.5 GT/s

The Vendor ID 0x11ab looks up to Marvell SemiConductor, but they have no PCIe card with that number showing in their portiolio. Some Highpoint devices are shown on their listings, so they may be cross developing with HighPoint.
The Device ID 0x7042 looks up to Highpoint Technologies RR231X SATA controller.
Mention of SCSI devices is very common because all these Interfaces are based on the much more mature SCSI Interface Routines, whatever their final interface turns out to be.

  • Calibrating PCI cards using Calibration Executive?

I am currently calibrating PXI cards using Calibration Executive (3.2.2) and a PXI-1050 Chassis, my company is getting ready to start buying PCI cards, specifically PCI-6542 and PCI-6713. What additional equipment will I need to purchase so that I will be able to calibrate the PCI cards? If the PC I am currently using does not have enough slots to accomodate additional cards is it necessary to buy another PC or is there a chassis that will let me calibrate the PCI cards outside of a PC?

I went ahead and answered your other thread here.  We like to keep the questions on our forum to one thread to make it easier for future customers to search.

  • I cannot update the credit card used for my subscription... only a few days left

    Hi,
My card was stolen and now I have a new one.  So I need to change the card information used for my subscription, but I can't.  I've been trying for days, using different browsers, computers, etc.  Contacted chat support with no results.  Who do I need to call to get help updating my credit card?
The message I get is "Card is invalid, please check card details"
I have only 4 days left in my subscription.
    Thanks,

Customer Service is completely incompetent with this type of issue. You will eventually speak to someone who does not have a good command of English, and judging from the background noise, is sitting in some kind of low cost "boiler room" operation that Adobe noiw considers to be adequate to service their paying customers.
I spent 20 minutes on the phone trying to do the same thing. I have work to do, and eventually had to hang up. The chat line reps have to power to do anything but read from their FAQ cards.
It must be nice to have a virtually monopoly on computer software...you can treat your customers any way you want and not have to suffer any consequences.

  • Which file type to use for editing

I recently filmed a school talent show to create DVDs for the parents. I'll be using PrE 9 to edit. I understand the output for the movie will need to be MPEG2 for the DVD. We used three different cameras (I know this is a bad thing to do with PrE), but we used what we have available. Though, we did use a GoPro Hero2 mounted on the piano to give a unique perspective. Consequently I need to convert the video files into a common format for editing. Is there a "best" file format to edit in or is there a file format that is easiest to work with in Premiere Elements while maintaining the best quality for the DVD output?
    Here is what we used:
Camera 1 (with the audio track from the sound board) was a Canon Vixia HF300. It exported in the dreaded .mts format (half the show at 24mbps and half at 17mbps)
Camera 2 was a Nikon 5100 as .mov files, 1920x1080, H.264, Linear PCM, Total bit rate 19k
    Camera 3 was a GoPro Hero 2 recorded .mp4 1280x780 H.264 Total bit Rate 15k
Since the aspect ratios are not equivalent, I plan on using black bars as opposed to cropping.
I'm editting on an Apple MacBookPro 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 8gb RAM running OSX 10.7
Also, should I use Quicktime to convert these files into the common format I choose? Ironically, all this footage is editable in iMovie, but iMovie is horrible for multi-camera.
    Thanks,
    Ed

Over on the Windows side of the aisle where I am, I would say convert all to DV AVI since the end will be a DVD, not a BluRay

  • Binding different events to a form depending if it is used for edit or create new.

    Hi,
I succesfully have separated presentation from logic (events, etc...) using the code behind article at adobe site. This is pretty nice but now I have a little problem. Think about I have two forms one for edit and the other to add a new user. Usually this forms are allmost the same only some logic change and just few controls if any.
What I would like to do (don't know if this is best way to do it, for me it does):
    1) Create Add form.
    2) Create a view state to change this add form to edit when needed (I think just few changes if any will be needed)
    3) Now the problem, I need to bind different logic if I'm in edit or add new user form. Is there any way to attach different functionality
to the form component to let it behave the way I need depending on the mode (edit or new)? I have seen include can be used but can it be used conditionally?
    Example:
        if( in edit mode)
            include ("src/usermanagement_editlogic.as"))
        else( in add mode)
            include ("src/usermanagement_addlogic.as"))
As I previously said I'm pretty new to flex but I think this is a good way to do things and have everything splitted. If anyone has a better way to do it I would be really happy to hear it  .
    Thanks in advance,
    Aron.

Using forms for create/edit or login/register are similar scenarios. Usually, you can take care of those by simply changing states.
Doing different includes is complicating things; you can just include all the code, and just use what you need depending on the state you are in.
Before you get into conditionally including things, or creating a bunch of different events, look at this little simple tutorial on using states, which happens to use a login/register form as an example: http://www.adobe.com/devnet/flex/quickstart/creating_states/.

  • Can HDTV be used for editing?

I have Sony DSR 30, DVCAM deck and Canon HD camera. Can I use HDTV LCD for example 24", for editing, monitoring? Can I use my old Samsung 22", LCD for the same purpose. There is only a computer connection, no RC or S cable in/out.
    Thanks,

HDV will not stream out through FW to an external to my knowledge.
However, take a look at the Matrox MXO.

  • Which Codec to use for editing?

    Hi everyone.
I have some rather large uncompressed files which premiere pro is struggling with. The files are only 2:20 seconds long but are 20GB in size with a data rate of 1244163kbps. My computer can play them but it's not smooth. Seeing as I'm going to be adding effects and working on different video tracks I figure it's a good idea to encode this footage before editingh with it in Premiere.
So I'm wondering what's the best codec and wrapper to encode with for editing? Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thanks
    Kevin

At this point, yes it's just for editing.
The free UT codec is another good choice, but it's 8 bit only.  It is lossless, though, and does play fine in a couple of media players.

  • Changing graphics card used for Virtual Terminal

I currently have two Nvidia graphics cards (I'm using the official proprietary drivers in the arch repos) in my machine.
Recently I needed to switch to using the other card for desktop graphics. I managed to persuade X to use the other card by modifying ``/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf``so that  ``BusID`` was explicitly set (to the other graphics card's BusID) in the ``Device`` section and restarting X.
However I've noticed that the Virtual terminals are still trying to use the graphics card that was being used on first boot. Is anyone aware of a way of forcing the other card to be used without rebooting (I can't reboot right now due to others being logged into my machine that are using it)?

Negative. If the Dell you bought does indeed only have PCI, and from what Google has shown me, that card is PCI-Express. They are not compatible.
