PCIe USB 3.0 Card appears in system report, but won't mount drives

I have an early 2008 Mac Pro running Mavericks 10.9.2
Bought an Orico PME-4U USB 3.0 4-port PCIe card with the Sata power cable.
Installations seems to go okay -- the card is powered by one of the empty hard drive bays.  The card appears in my computer's System Report as follows:
NEC USB 3.0:
  Name:          pci1b73,1100
  Type:          USB Superspeed Bus
  Driver Installed:          Yes
  MSI:          Yes
  Bus:          PCI
  Slot:          Slot-3
  Vendor ID:          0x1b73
  Device ID:          0x1100
  Subsystem Vendor ID:          0x1b73
  Subsystem ID:          0x1100
  Revision ID:          0x0001
  Link Width:          x1
  Link Speed:          2.5 GT/s
When I plug in external drives, they receive power from the card, but nothing will mount.
Is it a faulty card?  This is the second USB 3.0 card I've tried unsuccessfully.

Orico tech support had nothing to add beyond installing "GenericUSBXHCI.kext" and trying out different PCI slots.
I've tried two brands of PCIe USB 3.0 cards now and neither work.
I've also checked the SATA power cable and it works with the 4-port Firewire 800 PCIe card I have, so it's not that.
Anybody have any ideas?

  • PCI USB 2.0 card and mass storage on Sawtooth G4

I have an old Sawtooth G4 (350 upgraded to 800, 768mb) that I recently bought a big ext USB drive for. I put a USB 2.0 card in it years ago which has been fine up until now, however the USB connection times out and the Finder crashes with this drive (WD 750GB, which is fine on my MacBook with Leopard and an old iBook with USB 2.0 and Tiger).
I've ruled out it being a problem with Tiger (fine with iBook as mentioned) and the drive works, if slowly, over the internal USB 1.1. I heard mention on these forums that there's an obscure problem with PCI USB 2.0 cards on G4s and I'd appreciate it if anyone has any further information on this. I've been thinking about getting a new card as I can pick up a cheap one with an NEC chipset off eBay pretty cheap (current card is ALI), and I was also considering shoehorning Leopard on to it, however I'm not convinced either would work.
Long term, I'll be replacing the machine but I could do with a solution in the meantime as running the drive off USB 1.1 is a nuisance. Thanks for any suggestions.

Best bet is any card with a NEC PD720100 or PD720101 chipset. Stick with the NEC chip, and try NOT to use drivers, Tiger doesn't need the drivers.
All of these Cards are NEC chipset based

  • External HD Disappeared on Finder and Disk Utility, but Still Appeared in System Report

I have two external HDs directly connected to the USB ports. One is working properfly. But the other one would disappear from the Finder and Disk Utility. However, it still shows up in the Hardware USB section of the Sysetm Report.
    What does this mean? Thanks.

You are right. I need to select the device to show its details. The attached screenshots are from the good HD and bad HD. On the good HD, it shows more info.
Any explanation or suggestion? I contacted OWC and they are sending me a replacement. But how do I know it is a OWC HD issue or OS X 10.9.3 sleep issue?

  • Snow Leopard formats but won't mount exFAT USB stick

I upgraded my 2009 Mac mini to Snow Leopard this weekend, and applied the 100+ Gb update to 10.6.8.  I plugged in a PATRIOT 64GB USB thumb drive that had been formatted to ExFAT under Windowss 7, but Finder wouldn't mount it.  I launched Disk Utility, and on the Erase tab, is shows the unmounted drive as with an exFAT volume, but also refuses to mount it.  I reformatted it with Disk Utility to exFAT, and it still won't mount it!   Meanwhile Windows 7 mounts the drive no matter which OS formats it.
    What gives?

I'm not sure I can be of much help except to note that my exFAT drive still mounts just fine, so I don't think there is anything particular about the update.
A couple of things to try: Use the partition tab to get to Options and set the partition table to mbr or GUID. I believe Windows7 and Vista can boot a GUID PT. I've seen where OS X doesn't like some of the preformatted drives because of the partition table.
Or, download and install the update combo.

  • StarTech PCI USB 2.0 card

hi, I have a StarTech USB PCI card, # PCI425USB and at first was immediately impressed, but after susbequent failures, I am left wondering why it keeps going "dead?"
I have an MDD PowerMac dual 867 G4 with 1Gb of RAM, but for whatever reason, if the machine sleeps or is in low power mode with either an iPod or an external drive attached, the card stops working and the machine locks up and cannot be woken up unless hard-booted. It's very frustrating as I have to uninstall the card, reboot sans card, shutdown and then reinsall to see any results. There's also a D-link bluetooth adapter and an M-Adio Delta 2496 PCI card.
There must be an easier way. PLEASE HELP.

Thanks for the reply Donny. I've swapped the card in and out of all the available slots, but it pretty much seems to come down to NOT letting my machine go into low power/sleep mode whilst any peripherals (iPod or ext. HD are connected).
I have contacted Star Tech. I guess it's the simple thing of getting what you pay for... The card was only about $12 on CDW.
As long as I make sure not to let my machine go into low power/sleep mode with device attached to that card, I should be cool.
Now, if I could just figure out how to keep my Linksys wireless router from disconnecting my original Airport card in the same G4 DP machine, I'd be set!!
Good thing I just took delivery on my new BlacBook...

  • My hard drive crashed on my apple computer recently. I have a new one, but it won't sync with apple tv1, and I want to retrieve my photos from teh appletv1. It appears in devices now, but won't let me go any further with it. Help

The hard drive crashed on my apple computer and I lost a lot of photos. I want to recover them from my apple tv1, but the computer won't seem to pair up with the apple tv. The Apple tv does appear in devices, but it won't let me go any further. The 'apply' button is a pale grey colour and you can't click on it. Help!!

there is no facility to recover your photos from the appletv.
the only way to link the appletv to your new "system" is to remove the existing itunes link and then link it to the new itunes - this will delete all content from the appletv though.

    Hello everybody,
I have an issue now with the pdf I just Sync'ed. They appear in the collection shelf, but stay on the cloud.
I tap on the "download" disk on the right but nothing happens.
It is the first time my pdf are on the cloud when I synch from McBook to Ipad. They are usually usable as soon as the synh is complete.
    What can I do?
My internet connection is fine, whayt is the problem?
    Thank you for your help.
    IOS 7.0.4

I've already been through all that, thanks though. According to my college tech team, Firefox has updated its security systems (or words to that effect), as the same issue is happening all across their network, not just my single device.

  • Airport Extreme appears to be ok but won't work

I have my airport extreme hooked up to my cable modem and am using it as a router. It has worked fine for over a year I have had it but, for some reason has craped out today. Nothing has changed, no updates nothing. Internet is fine (if I plug the Ethernet cable directly into my MBP. Green light is on on the extreme. Have reset SSID and password and restored the Airport Extreme and the internet just won't work. Any ideas?

    Hello, hfred.
If I understand correctly, you can access the internet via an Ethernet connection to the AirPort Extreme but not via a wireless connection. Is this correct?
Connect the computer to the AirPort Extreme with an Ethernet cable. Open AirPort Utility, which can be found in the Utilities folder (located inside the Applications folder).
Your AirPort extreme should appear in the sidebar. Click it, then press "Manual Setup." Enter the password if asked.
Go to the Wireless tab. The wireless mode should be set to "Create a wireless network." Ensure the wireless network name is correct.
For now, disable wireless security. This will simplify the process of diagnosing the connection, and you can (and should) re-enable it afterward. (If you have not been using any wireless security, I strongly recommend that you enable it once the problem has been solved.)
    Press +Wireless Options…+.
+Transmit Power+ should generally be set to 100%.
For now, don't create a closed network. If you want, you can make the network "closed" after the problem has been solved.
    Press OK.
Go to the Access tab. Disable MAC Address Access Control.
    Press "Internet" in the toolbar.
    Set +Connect Using+ to Ethernet. Set +Configure IPv4+ to +Using DHCP+. Set +Ethernet WAN Port+ to +Automatic (Default)+. Set +Connection sharing+ to +Share a public IP address.+
Press Update. Allow the AirPort Extreme to restart. Unplug the cable connecting your computer to the AirPort Extreme.
After the AirPort Extreme has restarted, choose your network name from the AirPort menu. See if you have internet access.
    Does this work?

  • G4 867 DP (MDD) & G4 350 (AGP): PCI USB Card that Supports Deep Sleep?

I am working on upgrading a couple of G4s and wanted to see if I could install a PCI USB 2 expansion card with multiple external ports in both (4 if possible). I'd like to use the same card in both G4s if possible. Both will be running 10.4.11 & 9.2.2. I'd like the card to support Classic if at all possible.
I looked on OWC and first found the Sonnet Allegro; however, its product page notes it does support Deep Sleep so that is out:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/Sonnet%20Technology/USB2/
Then I found the IOGEAR Hi-Speed USB 2.0 PCI Card and thought I was good to go as OWC does not list any Sleep issues; however, after checking elsewhere (Amazon and other sites) this card has similar G4 Sleep issues.
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/IOGear/GIC251U/
So where, oh where have all the suitable cards gone?

I’ve did some searching on Google/Google Shopping, Buy.com, Amazon, eBay, & OWC and I present my results as it may help others save time. The most plentiful cards still available appear to be the Belkin, the two IOGear units, and the BAFO.
Looks like I’ll try the IOGear GIC250U first.
    Adaptec 3100LP:
PDF manual says support only to 10.1.1 and it says that the driver will disable the deep sleep option on your Mac, requiring you to uninstall the driver file if you want sleep back.
    BAFO BF-460:
Manufacturer says Windows only. A buy.com listing says Windows & Mac support but no other details. A Amazon listing says it supports “wake-up” function, but does not say what platform.
    Belkin F5U220:
Manufacturer says 10.2.7 or above for “F5U220V1”. Some sellers list cards as F5U220BHP or simply F5U220 so make sure it has “V1” on the end. One Amazon feedback said it has sleep issues with G5 while another said it worked good with a G4. Negative Mac feedback on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fwusb_card_deepsleep.html
    GWC UC-160:
Can’t find much information and could not find it for sale.
    IOGear GIC250U:
Manufacturer says it will work at 1.1 speeds with 8.6+ and 2.0 speeds with X. Feedback at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/firewire/fwusb_card_deepsleep.html said it did not work with G4 400 running 10.2.6 with drivers; did work with G4/350 AGP machine & Dual G4/533 Digital Audio.
    IOGear GIC251U:
Manufacturer says it will work with Mac X 10.3.9 to 10.5. LOL, diagram manufacturer has shows external hard drive connections as one example of devices you can connect (a big no, no according to advice here). Amazon feedback said has sleep issues with 10.4.2 on G4; with a G4 QuickSilver 2002 it only worked in the PCI slot next to graphics card; it worked great in a G4 Digital Audio; G4 Quicksilver running 10.4.8 works great; works great in unknown Mac running 10.3.8; never worked on a 1Ghz Mirrored Door PowerPc with any version of X from 10.3 to 10.4.9; froze computer and fried nearby pci card in a QuickSilver G4; a dual 450 G4 has sleep issues.

Seems to be listed under company named BusLink instead. A single Amazon listing says Windows only.

  • IPhone 4 not recognized when connected to new USB 2.0 card

I have an iphone 4 OS4.1 on a no-name Windows XP Pro (service pack 3) PC with an AMD processor and lots of RAM.
I had the phone working and syncing beautifully with the onboard USB 1.1 but it was slow. So I bought a new PCI USB 2.0 card and installed it. Card is installed and there are no problems according to the status in System Devices.
But the computer does not recognize the iphone when plugged into one of those ports. If I plug it into one of the USB 1.1 ports that are still in the machine, it syncs and works fine. If I plug it into one of the new USB 2.0 ports, the PC shows the window at bottom right saying the device is not recognized. Tried the wizard but it's useless.
    THOUGHTS?????

    Nevermind!!!
It turned out to be a faulty cable! I tried it with a different sync cable and it works fine!
    So disregard the question above.

  • Usb 2.0 card not working in bios

Hi I'm hoping someone can help me here. My problem is that I have a via pci usb 2.0 card that works fine at windows startup but does not work at bios startup. See recently all my usb ports stop working. So I had to get myself the external usb card cause there ws no other way for me 2 get my ports working again. So now I am unable to enter the bios settings by pressing F10 cause my keyboard and mouse only works after windows startup logo...

Ok  , at last , at last.
Ok unplugged everything  , power input Usb cable all other cables .
Plugged in the power and the input cable , still nothing .
I then took the input cable from the back of the mac and plugged it into the keyboard , success.
I put it all back and now its working , bizarre.

  • Usb flash drive won't mount in disc utility

running mountain lion on new imac .... usb flash drive was working, the next hour inserted it again and it doesn't show up in "devices".  Opened disc utility - it shows up there but won't mount and all the "verify disc" and repair disc" functions are greyed.
Same result when I insert it into my macbook.

Did you put it in another computer and save data to it since it last worked? did you properly eject the disk?
sounds like you need to reformat the flash drive
If you need to save the data , plug it in to a pc and see if you can copy to hd.
Then take to your Mac and format it in disk utility. I recommend using windows format.
Then plug in to your PCM and get the files.
Then.. Eject the USB disk, don't just pull it out. Take to your Mac and it should mount

  • PowerMac 7600 and PCI USB 2 Card

About a year ago I upgraded my daughter's PowerMac 7600 with 512 of RAM and Sonnet Crescendo G4 1GHz Card. Using XPostFacto 4 I installed MacOS X Tiger. After resolving a few issues it's been a year of nice performance for this machine (with zero manteinance). So I decided to fully upgrade it with another 512 of RAM, add an ATI PCI 7000 Radeon and a PCI Firewire/USB 2 Tango Card. The Hard Drive is a 60GB Maxtor with two partitions: One for Mac OS 9.1 and the other for Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.11.
After the upgrade I've noticed that when connecting devices to the USB ports under Mac OS X Tiger the Finder tends to freeze and even the whole System so I have to force restart. When using the USB ports under Mac OS 9.1 it works fine.
I've used a generic USB MP3 player (DOS formatted), an Apollo imation USB Drive (Mac formatted) and a USB Flash Wristband (Mac formatted).
The machine configuration is as follows:
PowerMac 7600 with Sonnett Crescendo G4 1GHz Card
8 128 MB RAM Modules for 1GB of Memory (All from OWC, same specs)
Sonnet Tempo Ultra ATA 66 PCI Card
    ATI Radeon 7000 PCI Card
Sonnet Tango Firewire/USB 2 PCI Card
    Maxtor 60GB IDE Hard Drive
    LaCie CDRW IDE Drive
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks for all your help!

The specs on the PCI card state:
    Mac Compatibility
Power Mac® G3 (Blue & White)(2) and Power Mac G4 (with PCI slots)
Power Mac G5 (with PCI or PCI-X slots)
    Mac OS® X Version 10.5.2+, 10.4(3), or 10.3(3)
Mac OS 9 (at USB 1.1 speed)
However, just because older PM 7600s are not listed, it appears to be hardware compatible. It could be something related to the fact that you used XPostFacto to run OS 10.4. Many older PMs could only use 2-port USB PCI cards. On my old PM 6500, I used a Belkin model F5U005 2-port USB PCI card. I don't know if this card would provide USB 2.0 when running 10.4.

  • Problem with KTV3 and PCI USB card extension from QTEC type 13068

    Hello all,
I have been trying to make work a PCI USB card extension from QTEC type 13068. This card allows to give 4 USB  ports more.
My problem is that oinly 2 ports are working and WINXP SP1 is saying that there are not enough ressources for all the PCI functions. However there is enough free IRQ. Even using this card alone on the mainboard give the same error.
I am using a KTV3 (MS-6712 VER:1.0A) and I have no idear why this is happening. Could it be a bad interaction between the BIOS and the card?  wall Or WIN XP? angryfire
All comments and ideas to try are welcome especially from those who have this QTEC card.
    Regards.

What operating system are you using?  The card requires SP1 for XP and SP4 for 2000.  If you have these, try to uninstal the cardl and let Windows reinstall the card on start-up.
