PCIe8x instead of 16x

I recently got myself the following motherboard : MSI G31M2-FD V2
At first, I used the onboard vga, but today I got a Sapphire HD3870 graphics card. After I installed it and checked it with ati catalyst control center, it says :  ''current bus setting : pci express 2.0 x8 '' . The motherboard does support x16 and my HD3870 also support 16x. The program GPU-Z also gave that same answer. So now I really wonder why it keep saying x8 instead of 16x. I know the difference between x8 and 16x is neglible but still it should run on the proper speed. I found the following in the manual :
When DVI Onboard function is supported, the PCI_E1 will be forced
downtrain to 8X bus width.(optional).
Depending on the type of add-in card installed in the PCI Express x16 connector
the DVI port will behave as described in below table.
No add-in card installed : Enabled
Non-video PCI Express x1 add-in card installed : Enabled
PCI Express x4, x8, or 16 add-in card installed: Disabled
ADD2 or MEC card installedL Disabled
So actually , it should be turned off now at the time I installed the new graphics card. I can't find anything in the bios about turning onboard-vga off.
Does anyone has the same motherboard? or , does anyone recognize this problem? I hope so!
Some people at other forum told me that I didn't insert my card correctly , so then I re-installed the card,(I mean, if I can't see the golden connectors of the card..then It should be pushed deep enough right?) but still no luck...

PCI-E 2.0 x8 is equivalent of PCI-E 1.1 x16.

Ok what ive done now is fit my videocard in the second blue 16x slot and put my soundcard in the pcie 3 and it still says its running at 8x will remove the soundcard and report back.
Edit:videocard is back in pcie2 running 16x but now i cant fit the soundcard in pcie1 cpu heatsink gets in the way,pcie3 is covered by the videocard as it takes up 2 slots amd pci34 the videocards fans come into contact when the soundcard is installed there.
After spending £140 on a pcie soundcard i would need to get a pci one and thats not going to happen so ill have to run @8x

  • GTX 660 TF 2GD5 works in 8x bus interface instead of 16x

Hallo, the issue that I'm having is that my GPU (MSI GTX 660) is reported to be working in x8 bus interface, not the x16. I have checked and the card is seated in the upper PCIE slot, which is supposed to be giving x16 interface, and I have no secondary GPU, that slot is empty.

  • Blackmagic Resolve and Speedgrade On the Same System?

I'm looking at building an educational color correction lab that would need to run both Resolve and Speedgrade CS6. It has become problematic with budget cuts in California to build a more robust machine. *(Tesla; Quadro 5/6000)
The system I'm building is similar to the Resolve reference system using 2x computational gpu's.
    The system would have:
1x Nvidia Quadro 600 (GUI) (main card for 30-bit color output)
2x Nvidia GTX 580 (CUDA) (no outputs)
1x Blackmagic DeckLink HD Extreme 3D (SDI out)
My problem lies in the fact there is no technical documentation for either cs5.5 or cs6 as to how gpu tasks are delegated. The only consensus that I can find is that CS6 and CS5.5 only perform acceleration on the main gpu except in the case of using and nVidia Maximus system.
I need CS6 to recognize one of the GTX 580 as the more powerful card and use it for MPE and hardware acceleration. I know it cannot use both of them. As I understand, my Adobe products would default to the Quadro 600. Is there any way to avoid this? Or maybe a suggestion on how to better set up a system for 4k color grading on a budget?
(If it could be avoided, I would like not to have one of the gtx 580's work as the main display card. leaving one less for Resolve)

Couple of bottlenecks in your setup as you currently describe it.
I'm assuming you have a 10 bit monitor for CC (something like a HP Dreamcolor), otherwise there is no use for any Quadro at all. Apart from the Quadro model - I'll come back to that later - you have three video cards plus the BM card. You did not tell on what platform they must be installed and it depends on the mobo used what will happen when all these cards are installed. One thing is for sure, there is no mobo in existence that has 52 PCIe lanes, so your video cards will not run at 16x speed, but only at 8x speed or slower. Running a video card at 8x instead of 16x results in a performance penalty of around 10-15%. But if you have this in mind for a 1155 platform, then the video cards will run at max at 4x speed and that wil be very noticeable. Whichever way you turn it, with this setup and the intention to do 4K CC work, you will not have the PCIe lanes for a dedicated raid controller and with that material you will want a dedicated raid controller.
Why two GTX 580's when not used for output or is that only for Resolve?
Assuming you have a platform with 40 PCIe lanes available, and despite budget restrictions, I would go for two Quadro 4000+ cards, forget about the 600 which is way too underpowered, forget about the GTX 580, since they lack 10 bit output, skip the Maximus/Tesla solution since it is too expensive. This solution assumes that Resolve can use both Quadro cards, since as you stated, PR can only use one.
Using this approach, you can run both Quadros at 16x and the BM at 4x and still have 4 PCIe lanes available for a raid controller at 4x. However, if you do not have a 10 bit monitor, then I would suggest to use two GTX 580's instead of two Quadro's.

  • D10 + Tesla C2050 + NVS 295 = No DVI Signal

    Hi there,
I’ve got two monitors hooked up to Nvidia NVS 295 sitting in 16x PCI-E .
Adding Tesla C2050 to the second 16x PCI-E slot causes both DVI signals to go off.
This is very unfortunate and very expensive problem as my PC now matches exactly recommended Tesla+Quadro Workstation configuration but doesn’t work.
Both of the cards work fine in isolation but not together. With Tesla having just a single display head I need another card to power my second monitor (and I’d like to add the third).
My D10 PSU is 1000W so there is enough power – I get “green lights”, PC boots up ok, keyboard works, just no video signal.
My BIOS video option is fixed at “Nvidia Card”, I can’t change anything there. Switching off networks and ports in BIOS didn’t help either.
Is there any solution bar buying a new workstation to make Tesla work with two monitors? Would it help if I get something like 1xPCI-E NVS card instead of 16x I already have?
    Thanks in advance,
    Pavel

You shouldn't assume that a 1000W supply will instantly grant you enough power to run the config you want.  It's all in how the rails are distributed.  I can take a standard desktop supply and design in 800W worth of 5V rails and call it a 1000W supply (stupid example, but it demonstrates the point).
Knowing how the power rails are laid out for the D10 supply, and what the TDPs are for the cards you're trying to use, I'm guessing you're running into an issue where you simply don't have enough 12V power to run both cards at the same time.  The C2050 is a beast, one that actually violates the PCIe power spec if I remember correctly.  When attempting to boot with both cards installed, you should see 2 green LEDs near the external 12V connectors if the card is getting enough power.  If it's not, one or both will be red I think.  Even if they're both green, it doesn't necessarily mean the NVS295 is getting enough power as well.
To put it simply....there's a reason we didn't qualify the C2050 on D10
You might have better luck with the slightly older C1060 Tesla adapter.  I believe it's slightly lower power, which might allow you to run another dual head card for monitor support.  Best to check with the offical list of supported cards though.

  • Wich extertan dvd burner ?

    Hi guys,
Here is my question : wich external dvd burner do you recommand (brand & model) to make high dvd copy with the macbook pro ?
I read (in this forum) that the matshita super drive has many flaws. I'm so disapointed...
    Cheers
    Belgium   Mac OS X (10.4.5)   To come : MacBook Pro 1.83 Ghz / 1 Go DDR 2 / 5400 HDD

Personally, I am so fond of my LaCie d2 DVD±RW with LightScribe 16x desktop drives, LaCie d2 DVD±RW with LightScribe 16x desktop drives that I am {} this close to getting a n 8x LaCie Slim DVD±RW with LightScribe, Design by F.A. Porsche for travel. As I understand it, it is a similar mechanism with dual layer and LightScribe technology (the latter which I thought was no big deal - but the only word for LightScribe labeling vs. Sharpie or inkjet labeling is "elegant" - just smaller - and it burns at 8x max instead of 16x like the desktops.
It's very small (5.2 x .75 x 6.3 in) compared to the 16x desktop version (6.3 x 1.7 x 10.6 in) but I don't think that the weights given on the spec sheets are right - LaCie lists the portable unit at 3 pounds and .8 ounce and the desktop at 3 pounds and 5 ounces: that just can't be right as the casing, alone, for the desktop weighs at least 3 1/2 pounds! And I've hefted them in the box at my local dealer - the mobile unit is much lighter, even in the box.
So what do you get that you haven't got in the MBP drive? A better drive (the TSST - Toshiba-Samsung - 16x is rated the 'best' by many independent testing groups) and, of course, dual layer support (which I find myself using more and more) and a drive that can burn twice as fast as the internal.
It looks as if it's a great little drive - I'll be getting one as soon as I find out a bit more about the power supply.

  • PCI Express at 8x

Hi, sorry if this is dumb question to ask. But how come my setting says my video card is running at 8x instead of 16x? I have 2x 7800gt PCIEX 256mb. Monitor is connected to the top one? Any ideas or is this normal?

Well, since you have no motherboard in your system I don't know, still trying to figure out how you get into windows......
Aside from that, if you have "16x" PCI-E board and not a "32x" PCI-E board it means you only have 16X total and when you install two video cards it drops each pipeline to 8x.
But since you don't have a motherboard, this couldn't be possible.  When you do go to buy a motherboard you should look for the 32X lines since you want to run dual video cards.

  • P55 gd 65 RMA

Well contacted msi support on my pcie running 8x instead of 16x and this was their reply:
If the bios did not fix the PCIE speed, we will need to issue you an RMA. You will receive an email which contains and RMA number and instructions.
How long does an rma take? and since its running at 8x which is fine for the 5770 i dont think its worth waiting and paying for the rma

RMA process is unpredictable and depends on where you stay. Some countries are fast, whereas some can take a week or two.

  • CDRW 48x16x48x recognition errors.

Hello to whoever decides to read this
I have purchased a 100 spindle of HP 48x CD-Rs recently and everything works except for one thing: the recognition of the speed of the CD-R.  I upgraded my firmware in hopes that would fix the problem but it simply increased my "max" burning speed in Nero to 24x instead of 16x.
This is either something to do with nero or something to do with the burner, but considering upgrading the firmware changed the "max" speed I doubt it's nero.  These CDs WILL burn at 48x, as I have tried them on another computer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks.

Try other burning softwares like Alcohol 120%.

  • Reached 310 FSB !!! Unlocking 14xMulti on 3.2 Prescott ? MSI already did it like ASUS !

hi there , first sorry for bad english :-)
i found a interesting feature/bug in bios version 1.9 on Neo 2 (6728 v1.0), running a 3.2 prescott on that board gives me a 14xmutli instead of 16x so i could run my fsb 310 instead of 275 before. looks like this only works on the 1.9 version of this bios. is this not the same like asus do on their new "unlock" feature for intel cpus ?
now my neo2 burned off and got a Neo 2-P (6728 v2.0) and this feature is gone, please MSI could you not implement this "bug" on/off switchable in current bios ? so many users would be happy !

    Wow! That's a great OC!
Do you also have to change the memory timings when you do this? my infineon run on 3 3 4 8.
Is there anything else one has tweak before doing this or can i just go to bios and set it to 1.49V and 310FSB?
If one can achive such good OC it might be worth it to get liquid cooling. If i get liquid cooling will it make much difference?

  • MSI K7T266 Pro2 & Enermax Liberty 500W

I would like to buy Enermax Liberty 500W, but it doesn't have a -5V ... Would it be a problem? What specification of ATX is this motherboard? From ATX 1.2 (1.3) -5V is not necessitated. Have you some experience?
But for example Tagan TG480-U15 - EasyCon Series - 480 W is ATX 1.3 specification - would it be better to buy this power supply for this motherboard?
I plain some upgrade, but power supply i would buy now.
Thanks and sorry for my English ...

Hey drake I'm having the same issue. I have two 7600 GT's and when i run them in sli performance is poor, but than if I disable SLI and run one of the cards performance spikes high. I dont know why but I think, this is only a thought that when you enable SLI the PCI bus splits down to 8x for each card instead of 16x for one so the system is bottlenecking at the PCI BUS! Thats the only explaination I can think of. By the way I do have the same board..
8X is still a lot and it is not a bottleneck for the video card.

  • Not burning at 16x

I'm having issues with my internal NEC 3550A and LG GSA-H10N. I've updated the firmware for each to the most currrent. But at 16x burn, I'm only getting up to 9x on the first 35 sec of burning then starts to drop down and settle at about 5x. I've used Maxell, Fuji, Imation, Sony, and Philips 16x DVD-R media. And all are testing at that speed.
I've tested the burn speed on these drives using Toast 8, and MBBench. My older Mac G4 had the same NEC 3550A, and it burned at a much faster rate. That's how I first noticed the slower speed on these drives.
Using Toast to test time on burning. On the older G4 it would take about 3.5 - 4 min to burn a full 4GB DVD at 16x. The burners on G4 MDD says it will take about 4 min, but actually takes about 10 min.
But ripping a full 4GB DVD, burning CD-R at 48x, and reading DVDs is all within normal parameters. And I don't think I've ever had a bad burn (maybe one) under "16x" burn option.
I've read about the drives might be set to PIO mode rather than DMA. Not sure what these are, but the explanation of the switching between modes made sense. Just wondering how this can be done on a Mac.
    G4 MDD Dual 1GB, 1.5GB ram, LG DVD-RW + Superdrive   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   80GB, 120GB, 2x 250GB HDs, Radeon 9000 128MB

There are so many variables with the various makers, that it just may well be a lack of native support for the brands in question, or, that the drives are somehow optimized to work faster under Windows.
I am partial to Pioneer. I've always had good luck with them, and my current DVR-109 burns consistently at 12x. I haven't flashed it, or changed the IDE cable to a 80/40 yet, but have read of good success at the 16x that it is rated for.
My DVR-110 (with Patchburn 3) in my Dual 450 Gigabit Ethernet, also is a stellar performer. I get 16x peaks, and average around 12x on most burns, Dual layer at 8x has produced no coasters.
The DVR-111 (8x DL, 16x DVD-R/+R) is supposed to be a nice device as well. I opted for the 109 (slower at 6x DL), instead, because of the lack of region encoding on the 109 (also only $29 at OWC).
I'm currently toying with the idea of putting the IDE cable in (my Sawtooth), and changing out for a Pioneer DVR-112D- 18x plus LabelFlash (Lightscribe). They are available here in Japan, but the labeling software is Japanese, and, though I can read Japanese fairly well, I'll wait till the US/EU version hits the market, and the English version of the utility is downloadable. But, I digress.....
You might (if you haven't) take a browse through the xlr8yourmac data base, and see if there are any similar user experiences with a similar Mac, or also check out what seems to be working for others.

  • IDVD will only burn to 16X discs and not 8X

I replaced my original superdrive with a pioneer DVR-100 because it can burn at 16X speed and dual layer. Now, iDVD will only burn to 16X discs. When I try to use 8X discs I get an error message. iDVD will begin to write, the disc will spin up twice, then the disc is ejected. The really annoying thing is that it makes those discs unusable.
Any ideas how to fix this.

    What brand DVD-R?
I burn Verbatim DVD-R 16X at 4X all the time using a disk image and Toast (or Disk Utility). Try Verbatim. I use other brands too. In both of my "SuperDrives."
Suggest you create a disc image and then burn the DVD. File/Save As Disc Image...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=164927
This will isolate any encoding/burning issues you may encounter. Once the disc image is created, double-click the .img and burn the virtual disc that should appear on your desktop, using Toast to burn the DVD. Disk Utility to burn the .img file. Usually, you can select a burning speed in Disk Utility.
There are variations to this process based on which OS X you are using...
Open Disk Utility (in Utilities folder in Applications folder), click on the virtual disc (maybe the .img) in the left-hand window. Click the Burn icon. A new window should drop down and your SuperDrive tray will open after clicking the Burn icon. Insert a recordable DVD. (Verbatim DVD-R preferred by me.) Click the Close button. Wait. Select a burn speed. Then click the Burn button.
-->If the virtual disk selection won't allow you to click the Burn icon, use the .img file instead. This may have changed in 10.3.9 and did change in Tiger.
Also, you can use DVD Player to play the virtual disk to check your iDVD 5 project before burning to DVD. Launch DVD Player. File/Open VIDEO_TS (Open DVD Media... in Player 4.6). Find the VIDEO_TS folder and open that. (The audio folder is for DVD-Audio disks.)

  • IDVD 4 with DVD+R 16x  media

I glanced thru this forum and just need a confirmation that my iMac 1.25 GHz G4 using iDVD 4.0.1 probably will reject the blank DVD and I won't be able to burn a movie unless I find 1x or 2x DVD-R.
    Is this correct?
The "Superdrive" that ain't so super?
    TIA
    -jP

First off, iDVD 4 (and previous versions) only burn to MINUS (DVD-R) media and not PLUS (DVD+R) media. Your subject line indicates PLUS media while your message references MINUS media, so I am not sure if you are aware of the difference.
As to the speed you can burn, 16x media may work, you just have to give it a shot. It won't burn at 16-times but instead will likely burn at the fastest speed of your Superdrive.
I personally am still working through a few cake boxes of TDK 4x media I loaded up on for use on my eMac and it works great.
