PCMag readers rate Apple highly on Desktop and Notebooks

Going slightly off-topic, PCmag just did a survey on vendor's reliability and support. Apple came on top for both desktop and notebook categories.
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,2006497,00.asp
I bought the Macbook Pro and it arrived 2 weeks ago (week 32 build). So far, I am very satisfied with it (albeit being on a pretty hot side), and I had no need to call the tech support yet. So I'm wondering - what do people on this forum think about Apple's reliability and tech support?
I am aware about the quality issues Apple had with earlier builds of their notebooks, but it seemed like Apple managed to sort it out mostly as of now. I was going to wait for them to come out with Merom notebooks, but after seeing the benchmarks, I thought there was no compelling reason to wait on Merom any further anymore (which wasn't surprising, since current intel notebook CPUs (Yonah) are actually very good unlike Prescott).
So back to the question......how would YOU rate Apple's reliability and tech support?
P.S. I would suggest that you try and customize your notebook when you buy, to increase the chance of having the latest revision of the components. Do realize that I said "may"......
MacBook Pro 2.16GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

I purchased a decent priced Mac Pro from eBay and then upgraded the graphics card and RAM.  I also upgraded the CPU's, but that isn't something most casual computer users want to get into.  RAM and video card was a no brainer on the Mac Pro.
I also scoured the local classifieds and found a nice iMac 17" 2ghz C2D.  I bought some extra ram, and put Snow Leopard on it.  Real great machine, works perfectly fine and runs anything I need it to do.  Was a great price.
Or you can buy yourself a new iMac, you won't be disappointed.  Looks great, has an awesome display, and is about as clutter free as possible.  You can also run Windows via bootcamp if you need be.
My friend has a macbook air, real cook machine, but it suffers in t he performance area to keep it light weight.  However, it does EVERYTHING he wants it to do.
I also run an eMac for internet browsing, word processing, and email.  You can get them almost for free.
Good luck,

On both my desktop and notebook, sync just stops working and needs to be set up again! Although my account is still there ?
I have windows 7 on both computers and I use the paid version of Roboform (which does not encounter any problems!) So, I really need my sync to work and keep working. Please help......

Do you mean that after closing the browser your Sync set up is gone and you need to Set it up again?
This is, generally, because your privacy settings are too restrictive and you are deleting the password of your Sync account.
You can modify this in the Privacy tab of your Preferences/Options window. Select Remember History or Use Custom Settings in the drop down to configure the level that you want.

The laptop works fine picking up the signal but the desktop does not work. Do I need to install the router software into the desktop to initiate a wireless network? And if so, do I need to have it hard wired to the desktop to do so?

Hi try to uninstall and reinstall the driver of the wireless NIC of your desktop. The router doesnt have a driver, you dont have to like install the router on the desktop.

  • I am trying to establish an apple id with my new mini. I went to apple on my desktop and was successful with my e mail address, however back at the ipad when i enter the e mail address it tells me password not valid. I tried i pad support on line and they

Further to my problem: I have an e mail confirming that xxx is my new apple id, but my ipad wont get past that question.??

You can have multiple addresses associated with your apple id. You will have to verify any changes before they can be added and this is done by sending you an email. This is to protect you from someone else makeing changes to your account.
You can make any changes and view all your info here:

  • Why do Macs (desktop and notebooks) appear to have two harddrives?

I'm erasing the harddrive of my old Macbook (unibody 2009) in preparation for sale, using the secure erase 7 pass method. Doing this brings up a question I've had for a long time. On disk utility, it appears as if there are two distinct harddrives. In my case the list looks like:
Both the "Toshiba" and the "Macintosh HD" drives can be worked on (error check and fix, etc.), and they seem like they're two different drives. But they obviously cannot be. Or are they?
The reason this is important now is for security reasons. I'm reformatting the Mac HD drive, but do I also have to reformat the "Toshiba" drive? I'm worried that perhaps all my data will remain on the Toshiba, and if a good enough nerd buys my macbook, he/she can access all my data.
    Thanks.

One is the actual drive and will typically show the name of the hardware.  The other is the partition on the drive.  If you had more than one partition, you would see them all listed.  If you did have multiple partitions, wiping any single one of them would leave the others intact.  It's generally a good idea to wipe at the drive level as this will destroy any data on the drive.  As you only have one partition, you should be fine.  However, there could be some circumstances where data would remain with this method.  It's not likely they would apply to you unless you have created/deleted additional partitions at some time.  It is possible to simply delete a partition.  When doing so, the data is not actually wiped and can potentially be recovered.  I don't know the size of your Macintosh HD partition.  If it is about the same size as your Toshiba drive, they you're probably fine.  I would still recommend wiping from the drive level.

  • What has happened to the URL window in "show all history" library? On my desktop and notebook this has disappeared since the 3.6.12 update.

Only the "Date" window is shown, libraries window appears to be inaccessible since update to version 3.6.12, unless I'm missing something.

YouTube is not now part of iOS 6.
However, you can go to the App Store and do a search using YouTube. You can download several YouTube apps: YouTube (for the iPhone, a IPad app is in work), several users  like Jasmine and YouPlayer.

  • I have a Apple Mac desktop and recently was unable to access any YouTube, movies, videos, etc because a "Blocked Plug-in" message comes up with no error message. It asks to upload Abode Reader, but upon completion of this the message is the same.

I have a Apple Mac desktop and recently can no longer access Youtube, videos, movies, etc because I get a message reading "Blocked Plug-in". There's no error message but it does say to upload Abode Flash Player and the problem will be solved. I do this but it doesn't fix the problem. What am I doing wrong?

if you already downloaded the adobe flash player onto your mac and still getting that message that means you need to finish the installation of the flash player
you do this by opening a finder window and going to your downloads, find the flash player in here and then double click on it and follow the prompts to complete the installation.
after this is completed you will need to completely quit out of the web browser you're using then reopen it for the change to take affect and your issue should be resolved. if it's not you need to contact adobe their number is 800 642-3623.

  • Apple Remote Desktop and controlling over VPN

    Hi All,
I had a question about whether something was possible and if so if someone could point me to instructions/how-to on setting it up.
I have three Macs I am administering. One is an iMac that stays in the office on the network. Two are MBP's. One is always at a remote location, the other comes in and out of the office. I work remotely administering the server and the three systems. I have the latest version of Apple Remote Desktop and obviously can access the server fine. I was wondering though if there is any way besides having the person give me their IP address every time that through the VPN I can see their system, then access it in Remote Desktop just like we are on the network together? Basically they connect to the network via VPN if they are remote and I do the same thing and then access their machine.
I hope that makes sense. I went through different parts of the guide for ARD but didn't come across a method like that described in there.
Anyone with opinions? Thoughts? Chants of I'm an idiot? haha
    Thanks

Yeah for some reason I cannot get this to work right. Even if I scan the 5 VPN IP's I have setup I cannot see their machines when I am connected to the VPN. I tested it the other day by connecting one of the systems to an outside internet connection, then logged it into the VPN. I then connected my own to a different source and logged into the VPN, but Remote Desktop just won't find it.
Just not sure why it doesn't work. I can see the computers on our internal network though, just not any connected via VPN.

  • Apple Remote Desktop and WildBlue Excede

I am trying, without luck, to get Remote Desktop to work with WildBlue Excede. Can port forwarding be established with their Surfbeam2 Satellite Modem? If so, what are the port numbers, and how is it done?
Has anyone had success in setting up Apple Remote Desktop and WildBlue?
WildBlue Technical Support said they do not provide static IP addresses, so it couldn't be done. Something tells me that is not true.
Has anyone had any luck with WildBlue?
    Many thanks

    Hi Paul,
Are you trying to connect to a computer that's connect to the internet with wildblue excede? or are you trying to connect to a computer some where else while your connect to the internet with wildeblue excede?
Ether way, have you considered an altertive solution? For instance LogMeIn?

I just bought a new desktop and will be taking my old one to the apple store tomorrow to have the data transferred. Does the transfer include the transfer of programs or just data?

They will simply use Migration Assistant to transfer your Home folder, third-party applications and support files, and system preferences. This is something you could do yourself. You would need a Firewire cable to connect between your old computer and your new one. Migration Assistant is installed in the Utilities folder of your new computer.

Hi all.  I can’t tell you how to solve your iCloud 3.x issues.  Heck, I don’t think they’re even solvable.
But if you had a previous version of iCloud that was working correctly then I can definitely tell you how to solve the “iCloud Photo Stream is not syncing correctly to my Windows 7 PC” problem.  …without even a re-boot.
Log out of iCloud 3.0 and uninstall it.
Open My Computer and then open your C:\ drive.  Go to Tools/Folder Options and click on the View tab.  Select the “Show hidden…” radio button and click on OK.
    Open the Users folder.
    Open your user folder
    Open ProgramData (previously hidden folder)
Open the Apple folder – not the Apple Computer folder.
    Open the Installer Cache folder
In Details view sort on Name
Open the folder for the newest entry for iCloud Control Panel 2.x – probably 2.1.2.8 dated 4/25/2013
Right click on iCloud64.msi and select Install.
When finished, the synching between iCloud and your PC will be back to working perfectly as before the 3.0 fiasco.  The pictures will be synched to the same Photostream folder as before the “upgrade”.  Now all you need to do is wait until Apple/Microsoft get this thing fixed and working before you try the 3.x upgrade again.
I think the iCloud 3.0 software was written by the same folks who wrote healthcare.gov with the main difference being that healthcare.gov might eventually be made to work.
For those of you who hate to go backwards, think of it as attacking to the rear.  Which would you rather have, the frustration of no synching or everything working on an older version?
    Good luck…

i have an 08 apple desktop and my ipad mini wont connect with my itunes and i cant find updates to fix this what do i do?

From Apple's website and printed on the box the mini came in:
Syncing with iTunes on a Mac or PC requires:
Mac: OS X v10.6.8 or later
PC: Windows 7; Windows Vista; or Windows XP Home or Professional with Service Pack 2 or later
    Download iTunes at www.itunes.com/download
