Pcmanfm 0.9.7 incorrect partition size? [SOLVED]

In PCManFM, the size of my hard drive is reported incorrectly.  If I open gparted and look at /dev/sdb, the usable size is 186 Gb out of 200 Gb, due to manufacturing tolerance, yadda yadda; however, PCManFM reports it having 199.9 Gb free.  Should I file a bug report or is there something I'm missing here?

  • [ SOLVED ] Partition Sizes For New Arch Install ?

    Hi All
I have just picked up a new 250gb HDD and i'm going to do a clean install of arch & openbox and would like to know what people would suggest for various partition sizes ?
    /root
    /swap
    etc
I have 4gb ram so not sure if swap is a required !
    Many Thanks

    +1 on KlavKalashj's advice!
When the installer warns you about there not being a /boot partition either(besides the swap), then just select ignore, it's no problem at all!
If you do want a swap partiton(and don't hibernate), then I would say max 1gb imho.
For an Openbox based install, then I would say 10GB is more than enough(mine's 5, although with a tiling WM: Musca).
I don't keep the cache forever increasing, but empty it at times where I know everything is OK. Also, there's scripts available which cleans the cache up, like e.g. only keeping one revision back of each package.

HP Photosmart 7520 e-All-in-One Printer - WHEN i AM TRYING TO MAKE A COPY COPY OF AN A4 DOCUMENT WITH A4 PAPER INSTALLED.  iT KEEPS PUTTING THROUGH A BLANK SHEET AND SAYING INCORRECT PAPER SIZE.   HELP!!
I HAVE CHECKED FOR UPDATED SOFTWARE ETC, CLEANED THE GLASS, TURNED OFF AND ON ETC - NO LUCK.
Why is it such a major task just to photocopy one standard piece of A4 paper with just a letter contained no photos etc or anything too tasking.
    Any help much appreciated

    Hey there @SMFTEDDY ,
I saw your thread and messages and wanted to add to it. I have checked the Copy Menu on the printer itself (below), and it does not contain the option to copy in A4 size. You might just have to use the work around scanning method recommended above to get to use the A4 size you wish to use with the Photosmart 7520.
    Good luck

  • Disk Utility -- Smallest (minimum) partition size

I viewed an earlier discussion on this topic that was answered incorrectly, but I couldn't add this information to it because it had already been archived. However, I was unable to find it anywhere else on the web, so I thought it important to get on the record.
Disk Utility in Leopard DOES enforce a minimum partition size. It is 1GB.
This is documented in the Apple Service Training course "Leopard Tools and Techniques."

    V.K. wrote:
it looks like DU will not allow you to create a partition smaller than one tenth of the disk size.
when i do it on a 200GB drive the smallest size it let's me make is 20Gb, and for a 500GB drive it's 50GB.
I guess that's a safeguard against creating too many partitions.
    Message was edited by: V.K.
I thought so. Like most filesystems, all the information must be stored in the bootsector or whatever it's called with BSD, and the total number of files is related to the sizes and total numbers of partitions, so like FAT32 or even NTFS, HFS has it's practical and theoretical limits.
I believe HFS has two bootrecords or equivalents, one for backup and this adds to the storage space issue.
Going back to the old 1.44MB floppies, the unformatted size was over 1.7 MB and Norton and MS took advantage of that, but not all disk readers were happy with what they did. MS once shipped Windows on a set of 1.7 MB floppies. Of course this was BC (before CDs).

  • HT5639 I am attempting to install windows 7 ultimate on a mid2012 production macbook pro using Bootcamp 5 in Mountain Lion. Whenever I set the partition size and tell it to continue, the program quits unexpectedly. I have done this about 5 times now. Sugg

The lead-in above pretty much states the problem. I am attempting to install Windows 7 from a disk, but that is not the issue. Boot Camp 5 just quits and reopens. I then repeat. Help.

I am about to run specialized GIS software that may or may not need the full machine resources. I am an attorney who uses QuickBooks for my accounting. The Mac version does not do as much as the Windows version. This is from both Apple and Quick Books professionals. I am using Parallels Desktop version 8 at this time. It does not support QuickBooks Windows version per Parallels. Any other questions? I am a highly competent PC user who is new to Macs. I am entitled to my own configuration choices. That said, I know when I need help which is now.
As to the free space issue I have 665.18 GB free space out of 749.3 GB on the drive. I am not trying to run the 32 bit version. I know that it requires the 64 bit version. Besides, it does not get that far in the process. As I said Boot Camp asssitant terminates unexpectedly as soon as you hit the continue button after setting the partition size. Therefore I conclude that it does not have a chance to see which version of Windows that I am using. I am using Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit version in the virtual engine (to use Parallels speak), but again Boot Camp would not see that since it is not running. It can't run at the momenet because Apple just installed a new hard drive and I have just restored the data from TIme Machine and Parallels needs reactivated, which I have not done yet deliberatley. With all of this addtiional information do you have any further suggestions? Thanks for your time and interest my issue.

  • 1.8TB Hitachi HDS722020:  "Partition size is not a multiple of 4K"

I picked up a 1.8TB Hitachi HDS722020 external USB drive, for an enlarged Time-Machine disk. The box says that it's usable on a Mac, but Disk Utility doesn't seem to like it.
When I attempt to erase it, it sits there, indefinitely as far as I can tell, trying to format it saying, "Partition size is not a multiple of 4K." I am able to format it as MS-DOS FAT32, but not in any MacOS (Extended) format.
Since it seems to be complaining about partition sizes, I was able to it into one partition containing almost all of the disk content, and another, "junk" partition that I presumably won't use very often. Unfortunately, the smallest "junk" partition it would let me create was about 190GB.
So, waddaya folks think? Should I return it to the store as a bad disk, or is there any reason to think that it's behaving in some sense correctly?

    Hello mr88cet
In Disk Utility highlight the external hard drives first icon on the left side list and select the Partition tab. Then decide on the # of partitions you want, then click the Option box and set the Partition map Scheme to GUID Partition Table. Now then you should be able continue to on with any multiple partition sizing (if more than 1 was selected) and format the drive Mac OS Extended (Journaled)...
Just follow the Disk Utility prompts, it's really easy after you've done it a time or two.

  • Boot Camp Partition Size/External HDD recommendation

After updating software, hardware, downloading Boot Camp Asst, and installing Windows XP Pro (have not yet downloaded Mac drivers or software, nor have I submitted registration of my WinXP Pro software, still have 29 days), I realized that I set the partition size too small and need to resize it. I read in other postings that I can copy the Windows partition to an external HDD from the Mac OSX side, then run Boot Camp again, delete the "too small" Windows partition, then run Boot Camp again and reset the partition size larger. Does anyone have detailed instructions to do this?
Also, can anyone suggest an external HDD for this purpose? I need to be able to share files between a PC and my 17" MBP running OS X 10.4.6. Specifically, I need to share (for editing purposes) audio files created with PC-based software with the Windows side of my MBP. The PC has XP Pro and MacDrive6 for Windows installed. I read the "Sharing a FireWire drive between Mac and PC" document on "The X Lab" website and, based on this, am leaning toward getting a FW (not USB) HDD and formatting it in Mac OS Extended format (not sure how to do this but cross that bridge when I get there). Does this sound reasonable? When I run Boot Camp again and have to choose between NTSF and FAT32 should I choose NTSF? Will I also need "SharePoints" or other software to share the Mac's FW drive with the PC?
I may have the option to share and backup files over the workplace network (if I take the time to set it up). Does anyone know if there advantages/disadvantages to this option?
Thanks for answers to these questions. Any help would be very much appreciated. Best!

  • Incorrect Page Size or Orientation Error Detected in Live Preflight

    Wednesday, November 10, 2010 12:16:40 PM PST
I am trying to prepare a newsletter created in Adobe InDesign to send to a Printer in Germany.  This is the first time I'm sending a document to press since moving to Germany last February and the first time since upgrading my computer and software to:
    MacBookPro: Model 5,3
    Adobe InDesign:  ver. 6.0.6
    Adobe Acrobat Pro:  ver. 9.4.0
The standard paper size in Europe is "A4" , slightly larger than our "Letter" size. Document was set up an "A4" document size. A4 is also selected on the Print menu.
Live Preflight shows "incorrect page size or orientation" and says:
    Required: 612 pt. x 792 pt.
    Current: 595.276 pt. x 841.89 pt.
Fix: Choose File/ Document Setup to specified required page size.
I tried changing the document setup to the "required" 612 x 792, and the document was squeezed into the smaller space, ruining the document formatting! I undid the damage and looked further for the incorrect preference setting.
There is a wrong setting somewhere, but I can't find it.
Distiller is rejecting the document and won't generate a PDF. The only other errors detected in Preflight were RGB color space issues.
All settings in InDesign Preferences, Print Menu and PDF generator are set for the size A4, yet Preflight insists that the Document
Size and Orientation are incorrect and suggests changing the size to 612 pt. x 792 pt.
I also noted that when setting up the PDF, I did not check "Optimized for Fast Web Viewing," yet when I generated the PDF, it "Optimized for Fast Web Viewing." It seems that there is some preference somewhere that is overriding my selections. But where....?!
I was able to generate a PDF from InDesign (without going through Distiller) and the printer was able to use the PDF.  I was taught to always use Distiller when submitting files to printers, and to "package" the files.  Is there some risk in sending files without using Distiller?
In addition to the page size/orientation issue, Europe has different standards for color space and printers' ink also. If anyone could shed some light on how I should adapt to European standards, I would be grateful.
I was disappointed that Adobe offered only paid support, although I purchased Adobe CS4 less than a year ago. For such an expensive
product, I would think free support would be available for at a minimum one year.

Yes, Preflight was looking for letter size and created a conflict with my page size/orientation selections in the document setup and print setup.
No, this didn't resolve the problem keeping Distiller from making my PDF.
Here is the message Distiller gave when it rejected the file:

    Distill Time: 7 seconds (00:00:07)

Does every criterion set in Preflight have to be fulfilled for Distiller to work?  How do I isolate the problem keeping the PDF from being created?

  • Maximum Partition Size for External Drive using DU

    Hello,
I just purchased a 750g Maxtor USB drive for use with Time Machine. When I went into DU to partition and format the drive I was surprised to find that every time I went to create a single partition using all available space, the operation would error out. I was however able to create two partitions with the largest one sized around 650g or so. I was using the Mac file system.
This just seems odd to me. Does OS X have a maximum allowable partition size that prevents me from creating one large partition?
    Thanks,
    Robert

    Hi Robert
You should be able to delete the partition, try again using the instruction in the following article:

  • How to set desired partition size on Satellite C850-12D with W7 Pro?

    Hi all,
I recently got a new laptop, Satellite Pro C850-12D with Seven Pro: the disk (500 Gb) is initially partitionned like this:
    - a small hidden, 1.46 Gb
    - the C: one, 449.47 Gb (visible by the user)
    - a hidden one, 14.83 Gb
I would reduce the C: partition to 100 Gb in order to create a new one for DATA.
So, I begin the process using the Seven tools for disk managing but the disposable size after reduction seems limited to a max of 226.685 Gb: C remains higher or equal to 233 570 Gb.
I tried defragmentation of C but its minimal size remains 233 570 Gb
Is there a method to overcome this limit and achivce my goal of 100 Gb?

    Hi
Before changing some partitions on the HDD I strongly recommend creating a Recovery disk!
The Toshiba recovery media creator helps you to create such disk and this is needed in cases something would be wrong with your HDD.
    Back to partition issue:
You will need to use an 3rd party tool like *Gparted* in order to change the partition size.

  • Boot Camp Partition Size?

I'm thinking of installing a boot camp partion. Does boot camp choose the size or do I. If I do, what's a good size to make it. I really will only run Office 2003 and my BlackBerry Desktop software and some browsing with IE.

Brand new Mac user here who just made "the switch".
I've also wondered "how large should I make the partition?"
On the Windows partition, I intend to install XP SP3, Microsoft Office Suite, Project, Visio, and Adobe Acrobat/LiveCycle/Photoshop (at least those are the "heavy hitting" apps.) I also plan to run Parallels.
I was alarmed to see that the suggested partition size for Vista is 60-70GB. But I never migrated to Vista because of all of its issues, bloatware, etc. and stuck with the tried and true XP. When I look at the tech specs for XP, the suggested available space is substantially smaller than the space required for Vista.
I see that Boot Camp Assistant defaults to 32GB and that anything higher than 32GB prevents sharing between partitions.
    So some questions:
    1. Is 32GB enough/not-enough/more-than-enough size for my intended OS/applications indicated above? As it is, my HDD is 320GB.
    2. Do I care about sharing between partitions? More simply put: if I am running Parallels and running MS Word (which would be living on the Win side of the house), will I have the option to save my doc on the OSX side only if the partition is <32GB?
    3. And as follow on to #2, what are the ramifications of creating a Win partition >32GB from a usability standpoint? I'm having trouble discerning what those really are in layman's terms.
    4. Please confirm: when I run Boot Camp Assistant, should I create the Win partition as NTFS? Is this dependent on the size of the partition and if yes, what are the suggested formats in regards to size?
Any guidance would be immensely appreciated.

  • Appropriate partition size for windows 7?

i just bought windows 7 and want to install it on my mac pro that i recently bought. i was wondering what's an appropriate partition size for windows 7 and if it matters whether i install the 32 bit or the 64 bit? i'm mainly using it for a game (league of legends) if that makes an difference. thank you for your time.
    -Nikko

If you have more than 4GB of RAM or are planning on some time in the future to install more than 4GB of RAM use the 64 bit version. The 32 bit version can not address more than 4GB. Windows programs are now 64 bit. Your computer is 64 bit. 64 bit Windows runs 32 bit Windows programs. So there is no reason to install 32 bit Windows.
Windows 7 requires a lot of space. Then you need space for any data you create. I think that at a minimum you need 50GB plus data. I would opt for larger rather than smaller so the minimum I would partition is 100GB. If you conserve space now by making a small partition it is likely you will fill up that space quickly. You'll then wish you had made a larger partition initially. Search this forum, there are several questions on how to make a Boot Camp partition larger.
