PCMCIA Ethernet card for OS X 10.4.8 ?

My ethernet port on my Powerbook G4 is damaged and can no longer be used. I looked into getting it repaired but that apparently requires replacing the entire system board at considerable cost. Rather than take that route, I was hoping to find a PCMCIA card with an Ethernet port but I cannot seem to find any that will work with OS X 10.4.x.
Does anyone know of such a card ?
Thanks for your help !

So, these guys have nothing?

(MacSense PCMCIA 10/100 Ethernet Card)
This is one of the first things I found when I Googled before posting my original question.
But if you look towards the top of the page at this link under
System Requirements, you will see the following :
Supports Mac OS 7.5.3 and above (Excluding OSX support) G3 PowerBooks and above are not supported.
So, for my needs, yes, they have nothing.

    How old is your Powerbook?
A Mac older than 4 years old may need its clock battery replaced by an authorized service center. The clock battery dying can cause certain ports to malfunction as well. If it is under 4 years old and no surges broke the port, try zapping your PRAM, it may solve the problem once and for all:
    http://www.info.apple.com/kbnum/n2238
If it is under AppleCare, there may be no cost at all. Any Mac under a year old is under AppleCare.
Also replacing the system board can be cheaper than from Apple directly if you take it to one of these places:
    http://www.dttservice.com/
    http://www.powerbookresq.com/
    http://www.microdocusa.com/
    http://www.macspecialist.com/
    http://www.techrestore.com/
In addition, if the port got burnt out by a storm surge or power surge your home/apartment insurance or credit card company you purchased the machine with may pay for the damage. So check each of those sources if you can't find an appropriate card.
http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/ lists a variety of upgrade cards in their database, and may have some ethernet cards you can look at.
By the way, the fact that port is broke suggests the possibility that any other system difficulty you are having may also be related to logicboard issue in anycase, so replacing the logicboard is a good idea if you are noticing other issues.

  • PowerBook 1400 and PCMCIA Ethernet card

I have some problems to find out list of supported PCMCIA Ethernet cards by MacOS 7 (B1-7.5.3) on PowerBook 1400. I would be very please to receive driver for 3Com OfficeConnect 572B what I own. Is it available?
    regards,

    Hi,
A quick Google search indicates that 3Com XJAEM3336 Mac drivers were available for at least some PowerBook computers. However, it is unclear to me whether the files here are needed, appropriate or sufficient in your case. Perhaps you could look further into this.
If you cannot locate a suitable Ethernet PC Card with Mac drivers, another solution could possibly be to use a 16-bit wireless card (typically, 802.11b speed and WEP security). See, for example, this web page.

    HI,
Feliks is right. You can also buy a USB LAN Card. In my opinion they are still cheaper!

  • Pcmcia ethernet card on compaq notebook

Hi can any one tell which Pcmcia ehrnet card supports for solaris x86 intel on notebook .....
I am using compaq presario1200 notebook and had netgearpc card which is not working with solaris 8
    appreciated for the help

I finally got PCMCIA to work.  But it was a battle.
My ethernet card DLINK DFE-690 TXD will NOT work with Arch 0.7.  (It does work when using the Arch 0.7  Installation CD but after installation, it does not work).
I tried everything.  (e.g. disabling almost everything in rc.conf and the config scripts).  I even tried manually inserting the modules using modprobe. And then running dhcpcd.  But dhcpcd failed since the ethernet PCMCIA card was "BUSY".
I found the BUG!  The problem is with the 2.6.10 kernel that the arch 0.7 CD installs.  In other words, the stock IDE or SCSI kernels that come with the 0.7 installation CD's are buggy.
I reinstalled arch usng FTP install.  (arch 0.7.1 is then installed with a newer kernel 2.6.13).  Arch 0.7.1 was able to properly detect and setup my PCMCIA card and get networking going.
I did NOT enable the pcmcia or hotplug daemons in rc.conf.  You do NOT need to.  They automatically get set up in the loadng modules stage (where some auto detection is being done).
So if anyone else is having problems, just use the FTP installation which installs arch 0.7.1 and a newer kernel 2.6.13.

  • PCMCIA firewire card for G4 laptop (follow-up to excessive timecode breaks)

1.) It was recommended that I get a new firewire bus to resolve excessive timecode breaks when importing from a Canon camcorder to an external hard drive. I've been reading through posts on this topic...and saw getting a new firewire port mentioned a few times... How come when I called Apple to check on the cost of a new firewire card for my laptop Powerbook G4, I was told that nothing could be added without replacing the entire logic board? Am I missing something? I didn't say "PCMCIA firewire drive" - is that something special? Any idea of the cost to purchase and install?
2.) Apple recommended just capturing to my internal hard drive, and transfering the projects. Apart from this being cumbersome... I need a little verification: if I transfer PROJECT X to my external hard drive, then do I also need to transfer my Audio Render, Autosave,Capture Scratch, Render, Thumbnail, and Waveform folders? [I realize this is basic, but I'm wary of losing the information the project needs and getting it all messed up]

pcmcia is an card slot. If you have a 12" PB you may not have one.
If you have a pcmcia slot, buy the card. Slide the card into your computer and start up. Put the camcorder on the card and your fw drive on the port built-in to your computer. Even if this does not solve the timecode issues, it will save you other headaches in the future.
Question. Does capturing to your internal drive solve the timecode issues you are having?
I disagree with the advice of capturing to your internal drive and transfering the project after the fact. There are a bunch of reasons why, and all of them are qualified, so I hesitate to go further until I know whether or not capturing to the internal drive is making your timecode headaches go away.
I suspect capturing to the internal drive will not help the timecode issues which will make the whole point moot. But hopefully I'm wrong :>

When you talk to representatives from Apple, you have to be conscious that if they are not specialists in the area you are focused on their advice may be based on general recommendations from an IT or home user perspective. There is a difference between talking to a sales person on the floor of the Apple Store and someone from the Genius Bar. And the person at the Genius Bar may have a tremendous background in network installations, but never have opened FCP. Or you might get lucky and get a FCP savvy genius, who would be a bit weak when talking about some other area.
This is not a knock, just a reality. It is difficult to be deeply conversant with even one area. It is not realistic for the generalists you usually deal with to know the best answers to very specific questions.
I'm working toward becoming a certified trainer with FCP and it is not easy or cheap to become an expert at this one application, never mind all the possible applications and hardware combinations for wildly different needs and budgets.

  • Ethernet Card for PowerMac 5500/225

I've an old PowerMac still gathering dust and since I'm connected to a DSL line with a wireless router I thought I'd take advantage of the 4 wired Ethernet ports at the back and wire my Mac up to the Net (you know, the old fasioned way with some Cat 5).
This will mean bypassing the old dial-up modem (built in) by installing an Ethernet card. I imagine these now cost pennies, and can be bought on eBay, but which make and model will work best (or work at all)?
Thanks in advance for any help that's forthcoming...
PowerMac 5500/225 Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier System 8.0

Many of the 5500s shipped with a Comm II slot RJ-45 Ethernet card in the leftmost (from the operator position) position [that's rightmost if you have good access to look directly at the backpanel.]
Alas, some of them did not. If you want to install one there, you will need a Comm II slot (not to be confused with a Comm slot) Ethernet card. They are readily available from used Mac dealers, and can be had on eBay for under US$20.
If and only if you already have the right-angle PCI slot adapter board in place, you can also use a PCI slot card, but beware -- many of the manufacturers are either no longer in business, or cannot supply Mac drivers. So if you buy a Brand other than Apple, be sure you are getting the Drivers with the card.

From the Sonnet description, it looks as if it will fit a range of machines at around that time, but here's our G5 spec anyway:

      Model Identifier:          PowerMac9,1
      Processor Name:          PowerPC G5  (3.0)
      Processor Speed:          1.8 GHz

L2 Cache (per CPU):          512 KB
      Memory:          3 GB

  • NAT / cant select my external Ethernet Card (for use with PPPoE)

Hi i'm experiencing difficultys in setting up my server with a public IP adress on my external ethernetcard through PPPoe (xDSL). This setting is described as a sample setup in "ServerAdministrationv10.5.pdf" The following problems com up:
    - When i try to settup trough Server Assistant and i come to Network settings both (external (WAN)& internal (LAN)) Ethernetcards show up. As an necessery information there is asked for "PPPoE Servicename" (besides accountname and password). My ISP doesnt require a PPPoE Service name and when i query (?) what is asked for Server Assistant tells me that except i get the information from my ISP i have to leave the field blank. Now, i cant continue with the setup when leaving the field blank . The information is required. When i just supply some information and continue with setup the setup ends with a long pause and an errormessage.
    - Second try, after initial clean installation i Setup the server again localy with the default Serverassistant. When asked to post IP-Adress and Subnetmask for the first listed Ethernetcard i just leafe it with DHCP and continue. After initial Setup is complete i try to reconfigure the external (WAN) Ethernetcard with PPPoE. By doing that(in Systemettings / Networksettings) a get something like a new virtual Interface on my External EthernetCard. I enter the necessary information (accountname, password and leave the field for "PPPoE Servicename" blank. I connect to my ISP and get a perfect connection. No problem to brouse the Web or make FTP connection.
Now when i continue to finish the setup of my new leopard-server i'm asked to select the external Ethernetcardin NAT. Unfortunally i have know three Ethernetinterfaces (External with DHCP, External with PPPoE and the internal one for my LAN). The 2 externel EthernetInterfeces have both the same Name (in NAT)
and somehow i cant select the one where i have setup my PPPoE.
Now, i go back to Networksettings and delete the initial Externalcardsetting (leaving with only my working PPPoE setting on the External Ethernetinterface). As the result of this manipulation i cant select the external Ethernetinterface in NAT anymore. Only the internal (LAN) Ethernetinterface shows up.
Can anybody help me with to above discribed Problem? Somehow i have to be able to select my working PPPoE Setting (on my external Ethernetinterface) in NAT.

I have this exact problem on my new Intel Xserve. During setup I configure ethernet 1 with a manual IP address and try to set up ethernet 2 for PPPoE (it will connect to my ISP via the ADSL modem/bridge) but despite the help screen saying do NOT type anything in PPPoE Service Name unless requested to do so by the ISP (they don't), if I leave it blank it complains because that field is empty and returns to the same screen.
This brings the entire installation to a halt. Seems to me like it's a big bug - I cannot see any way around it. Someone please tell me I'm being stupid here and the solution is obvious:-)

  • Recommended PCMCIA wireless cards for Linux 2.4.20?

I am interested in any suggestions for Cisco (or other!) PCMCIA IEEE 802.11b wireless cards that are compatible with Linux 2.4.20, i.e., an upgrade of the Linux kernel is a last option!
The source files for the driver must also be available. It is preferable if the cards are IEEE 802.11g/n ready also, but this is not essential.
    Thanks for any replies!

Good luck to you. While it's slowly getting better in the 2.6 kernel line..
I've always just used the win32 driver with the NDIS wrapper in Linux. While it's not my favorite option, it works.
As for driver sources, if you do find an open source wifi driver for a major chipset like Atheros, let us all know.. :)

  • PCMCIA Wifi card for PowerBook G4

    Hi,
I have bay a Belkin Wifi 802.11G PCMCIA Card on the apple shop and I couldn't set up it on my PowerBook G4.
Could someone help me with this?
    Thank you very much...
PowerBook G4   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   PCMCIA Wifi

I had to install the software from http://www.ralinktech.com/supp-1.htm to get my Belkin card to work.
However, put the card in and click on the PCMCIA icon that appears in the menubar. See what chipset it says it is. If it isn't RALINK, then don't use the link I sent you. You may need to locate Mac-compatible drivers elsewhere.

  • PCMCIA ethernet card (wired) that will work with 10.4 tiger?

i have unfortunately fried my ethernet port on my 1.33 al powerbook (applecare expired). I must use an ethernet PC adapter card that will work with Tiger 10.4.
The Dlink adapter although mention OSX support only works until 10.3.9.
Anyone here got suggestions as to which PC card to get?

Check Cisco. Also Google your need, i.e. "ethernet pc card and Mac". You should be able to research from there.

  • ML-Ethernet Cards for the 15454

    Hi
The ML series cards have two POS interfaces. Would you know whether it is possible to use POS sub-interfaces and map each one to a separate SDH circuit to create a hub and spoke network?
    Cheers,
    Phil

Hi Phil, no it's not possible. Unfortunately the ML series can have only two POS connections to SDH.
Since Rel. 8.5 there is a new ML-MR (ML Multirate Card) with 10 GigE Ports. But this card is only P2P for EPL services. Maybe this card could help you in your design. The card is very new and the SW feature set is very small at this time.
