PCMCIA support

According to the literature I have found on this web-site PCMCIA (and in particular cards such as the 3com 3c589) are supported by Solaris 7 (x86)and Solaris 8 (x86) through the pcelx driver.
However, I can't find clear guidance on troubleshooting PCMCIA on my machine. What I don't understand is why Sun supposedly doesn't support CardBus. My machine is the type where I can't make changes in the BIOS to change the mode to PCIC. Does this mean that I can't run Solaris on my laptop?
If anyone (or Sun if you are reading this) can point me towards getting networking on my Dell Inspiron 7500 laptop working I would greatly appreciate it.
Steve

All the people in Japan wish laptops would be support. Heck
all the countries in the world that use Solaris on laptops
wish it would be supported. Sometimes Sun dosn't know a good
thing when they have it. At least from a market prospective.

  • DOS PCMCIA support for old Compaq Armada 1571DM

    Hi there,
    I have recently purchased an old Compaq Armada 1571DM for a project I'm currently in, which requires both portability and the availability of a couple of COM (serial) ports. The laptop comes with a single serial port, so I thought to add the second one I need via a PCMCIA to serial card adapter. So I purchased one of these too.
    The problem I faced is that the software I use to access the serial ports runs on DOS only, and as far as I could find on the internet, there seems to be no DOS driver/card enabler for this particular laptop.
    I'll very much preciate your help, as I'm stuck on this issue for a long time now, and I really need to make it work.
    Thank you very much.
    Best regards.
    PS.: under Windows 98 everything seems to work: PCMCIA sockets are detected, and PCMCIA adapter is properly recognized and installed thru its provided drivers.

    Hi:
    You may also want to post your question on the HP Business Support Forum -- Armada notebook section.
    There is a member there (Rainald Taesler) that knows everything about those relics.  If he can't help you no one can.

  • Solaris10 PCMCIA Support

    Hello. I'm getting more and more excited about Solaris/X86 due to all the new development features in 10. So i've loaded up B63 (I've tried previous Express releases in the past). Problem is that I get 2 odd errors at startup.
    The first is complaining about IPL 11 conflicting with another device. I went back and reconfigured the devices so that this was no longer and issue but it ultimately made no diffrence.
    The second is two worrysome "pcic0: Unable to alloc state" (one for pcic0 and one for pcic1) messages.
    When the system comes up the pcic module isn't loaded and obviously I can't even touch my network card.
    I'm using a Compaq Armada E500 with a 3COM 3C574-TX PCMCIA networking card. I'm running Solaris10 B63 as stated. I tried to use the XIG PCIC patch but it won't install on Solaris10 and pkgtrans is freaking out when I try and dump the stream to use manually. I tried to dig around in the BIOS, but the BIOS is so restrictive there really isn't anything to do but set security settings.
    This is bumming me out, I'd like to be able to develop on X86 using Zones and play with DTrace while in the park/backyard/etc, but it's not much fun without a network connection. Sadly, I do not have an onboard network.
    Ideas? Searching around the net hasn't really yeilded any results except a better understanding of how PCIC works.
    Thank You!

    I have loaded Solaris 10 on an Compaq Armada 7800, but have been struggling to get the PC Card controller to work with ethernet cards.
    I have tried to use a traditionally "well supported" 3COM EtherLink III 3C589D and I have even purchased a Cisco (the networking giant) owned Linksys Etherfast 10/100 Integrated PC Card PCM100. I have a few other PC Cards I can try, but I think the issue is with the controller: "WARNING: Cannot register interrupt for 'pciclass.060700' device at IPL 11 because it conflicts with another device using the same vector 11 with IPL of 1. Reconfigure the conflicting devices to use different vectors.
    I have used solaris for over a decade, but I don't understand PC Card or PCMCIA enough to get past this.

  • PCMCIA Support Help!!

    Hello,
    The Ethernet port on my Notebook has died yet I can not find a PCMCIA card that is support by my unit and OS.
    I have a D-Link DFE-690TXD which only is support up to v9.
    Can anyone suggest a card that is support on OS X 10.4.3 or help me to get this current card to work??

  • 109929-03 breaks Sol 8x86 ethernet pcmcia support

    For using ethernet pcmcia card faster than 10 MBit/s you need patch 109923-04.
    Unfortunately this patch depends on 109929-03 which breaks the ethernet pcmcia card support:
    After applying the patch the ethernet card is identified as memory card and therefore the memory
    and pcram device drivers loaded. Unloading this drivers and force loading the network driver is
    not possible.
    Any clues ?

    You are not alone with issues related to the e1000e (but all they concluded was that reloading the module makes it work again):
    https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=145564
    It seems like this is more your issue:
    http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.linux. … devel/8932
    But if none of those boot flags work for you, then there's not much you can do, and you'll have to write a script to reload the module each time after initial boot finishes I guess until the module gets fixed.
    Also, power management of the PCIe interface causes the e1000e to shut off after a while as well (lots of people on CentOS noticing this):
    http://serverfault.com/questions/226319 … ie-aspm-do
    So you can use that boot parameter to stop that from happening, if that becomes an issue for you as well.

  • Will the Linux GPIB driver be updated to support PCMCIA cards?

    Kernel 2.4 appears to fully support PCMCIA. Will the NI Linux GPIB driver be updated in the near future? If not, I am considering the INES GPIB card.

    Right now there are no plans to add PCMCIA support to the Linux GPIB driver software, which currently supports AT-GPIB/TNT, PCI-GPIB, and GPIB-ENET/100 products. Adding this support will depend on the scope of demand for it.
    The following page contains information on the currently supported products:

  • Getting Wireless PCMCIA card to work

    Attempting to get a Linksys wpc54G wireless PCMCIA card to work on my 1.5Ghz G4 PB.
    I verified that the card works, by plugging it into to a PC.. ( works fine)
    Plugging the card into my pcmcia slot, on nothing. No lights.. nothing.
    I get the PCMCIA icon on the menu bar, three options
    unknown vendor <-grayed out
    Network controller <-grayed out
    Power card off.
    I read where there might be some hack that I have to do to get PCMCIA support running, but no clues after that.
    Any help is greatly appreciated...
    Larry

    Hi,
    When I got my PCMCIA wireless card (not Linksys) it came with an install CD. The G4 maybe wouldn't of known what it was or what to do with it on it's own, needed the install feature.
    Works fine once installed. Did you get an install CD for it from Linksys? For the Mac OSX? If not, it might pay to check their web-site for one.

  • Pcmcia bluetooth card problem

    OK, I have a bluetooth (bt) mouse, and two bt adapters. One adapter is usb and it works perfectly i.e. my bt mouse connects to it no probs. The other adaptor I have is pcmcia, which doesnt 'work'.
    Here is the result of:    udevinfo -a -p /sys/bus/pcmcia/devices/1.0
      looking at device '/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1e.0/0000:02:01.1/1.0':
        KERNEL=="1.0"
        SUBSYSTEM=="pcmcia"
        DRIVER=="serial_cs"
    ATTR{modalias}=="pcmcia:m0279c950Bf02fn00pfn00pa281F1C5Dpb7664FB1Dpc00000000pd00000000"
        ATTR{prod_id2}=="Bluetooth Card"
        ATTR{prod_id1}=="PCMCIA"
        ATTR{card_id}=="0x950b"
        ATTR{manf_id}=="0x0279"
        ATTR{func_id}=="0x02"
        ATTR{pm_state}=="on"
        ATTR{function}=="0x00"
    So udev finds it and knows what it is no probs. However, hidd --search does absolutely nothing:
    >hidd --search
    searching ...
    >
    i.e. after the hidd command it prints searching and immediately goes back to a command prompt. Its not actually doing anything. I run kde and kbluetooth doesnt register that a bluetooth adapter is present at all.
    looking back at the udevinfo output I think the driver thats being assigned is worng. As far as I understand the serial_cs driver is for pcmcia modems. Under suse 10.1 my pcmcia bt adapter works perfectly but udevinfo shows that the driver is "yenta_cardbus"
    can anyone explain how I could force the driver used for my pcmcia bt adapter under arch to be "yenta_cardbus" or otherwise enlighten me as to what my problem might be.
    Thanks

    ; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
    ; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
    ; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA. This would be
    used
    ; when the DA was out of multicast range and DHCP was not being used to
    ; configure the DA.
    ; The static DA configuration format is as follows 'DA <addr type>,
    <addr>'.
    ; The first word must be "DA". The addr type is the address type.
    Currently, only
    ; IPV4 has been defined. IPV6 will be defined in the future. The addr is
    ; the address specified.
    ; The following is an example of a static DA.
    ; DA IPV4, 130.1.1.1
    ; The SA Register Filter would be used when the administrator wanted all
    services
    ; of a specific service type being mapped to a single scope. For example,
    ; the administrator wanted all "lpr" printers being registered to scope
    "printer".
    ; The format is as follows: 'REGISTER TYPE "<type name>" to SCOPE "<scope
    name>"'.
    ; The parser will look for REGISTER, TYPE, and SCOPE as keywords followed
    by quote on
    ; a single line. Example:
    ; REGISTER TYPE "lpr" to SCOPE "eng"
    ; The last line must contain a line feed and char return. A semi-colon
    specifies a
    ; comment.
    DA IPV4, xxx.xxx.xxx.102

    ; This is a sample of the slp configuration file.
    ; Two types of entries can be made: 1) DA entries, 2) SA Register Filters.
    ; The DA entry allows static configuration of a known DA.

  • Install Solaris 8 on Gateway Laptop with Windows XP

    I have Gateway laptop with Windows XP pre-installed. Now I want to install Solaris 8 without removing the Windows XP. I wanted to use dual boot option. Can any body advice me if there is any whit paper on this subject(with step by step insturctions). I have partition magic but it can only partition and format to NTFS, FAT, FAT32 and Ext2 (linux only).
    Thanks for your help.

    It can be done but the biggest stump is the network interface. I've an Acer 350 series with a built-in NIC. I also use XFree86 because the Xsun doesn't recognize the video card. The biggest problem in getting Solaris x86 working is getting the network interface to work, since the PCMCIA support is horrible. You need to be sure the the components on your laptop conform to the HCL. As for X, just use XFree86.

  • Call failed, call failed

    I bought an iPhone 4 from ebay. The seller said he was not quite sure about whether the phone was locked or not, but vodafone's micro-sim card is OK. I bought a vodafone pay as you go micro-sim card and insert it, but neither making or receiving a phone call nor sending or receiving a message is available. I was confused. I am recovering the filmware and I am not sure whether it will work or not. Please help me.

    The problem is reproducable.
    On a "Core" installation,
    +with the following added:
    Documentation Tools
    Lint Libs (usr)
    Live Upgrade Software (dependency; why?)
    On-Line Manual Pages
    Secure Shell
    SunOS Header Files
    Solaris Zones
    -and the following excluded:
    FTP server (root and usr)
    PCMCIA support
    Sendmail
    Solaris Desktop /usr/dt
    Xinside Xserver driver
    I do get zones working on a full "end user" install -- but then I also get sh*tloads of stuff I really don't want on a server (GNOME, CDE, StarOffice, Evolution, Mozilla, X11, OpenWin, ...). Removing the spurious fluff won't work; some packages removal scripts seem to be broken, and dependency checking is, well, living hell on Solaris 10.
    I would like a simple thing, which is: a very basic, bare-bones installation of a Solaris 10 server -- WITH zones.
    Perhaps this is an impossible dream. Is it?

  • Make menuconfig clarification(SOLVED)

    I'm trying to understand "make menuconfig" a little better.I know what driver i need for my wireless card: "Network device support --->/Wireless LAN --->/Ralink driver support --->/Ralink rt2501/rt61 (PCI/PCMCIA) support"
    So can i disable everything else under "Network device support",and all the sub directories.

    You might try:
    make localmodconfig
    before
    make menuconfig
    since localmodconfig will cull unneeded modules from the build, which makes it easier to sort the cruft from the cream in menuconfig.  localmodconfig automatically makes selections of needed modules based on what is running on your system when you run the command.
