Yes that is a "default" answer to upgrade to the latest patch set. You should do so because in most cases it helps.

  • Do itabs in ABAP program memory swap out when the program is swapped out?

Do itabs in ABAP program memory swap out when the program is swapped out by the app server scheduler?
If so, has anyone compared the time it takes to open/close an Oracle table n times with the time it takes to swap an itab of 50M in and out n times?

    Andrew -
Although your suspicion appears to be wrong (according to the answer provided by CharlesF below), I'm awarding 6 because your answer indicates that you are at least sensitive to the issues involved here (which is better than 90% of the SAP practitioners out there.)
However, I do want to take strong issue with you on the matter of how much available "multi-gig" memory is available, because this is irrelevant to the issue at hand.
The question is: how does the swapin/out of large program memory affect the scheduler on the app server?
This is a queueing theory issue that has nothing to do with how much memory is out there.
Back in the days when folks had to know a little queueing theory (to evaluate the pro's and cons of ISO vs SNA and token-ring vs other protocols, everyone understood that if you ask the scheduler to repeatedly swap "alot" and to do so very often, then there will be a profound ripple effect on system performance, not just for anyone "job" or "program", but for any and every job or program.
The reason is very simple, and the folks who taught the ISO/SNA seminars always used it: traffic flow on passenger highways is always best when there are few trucks travelling with the cars.  This is why the New Jersey turnpike sometimes splits into two "cars only" and "trucks and cars" highways, and why many other roads have "right lane" only restrictions for trucks in certain areas that tend to get congested ...
Anyway, always a pleasure to chat with you ...

  • Swapping out Graphics card on HP Envy 17-k251na

Hello! I have a feeling that i may have been given the wrong information by the assistant i bought my machine from in PC world...
I was assured i would be able to swap out my graphics card, which is a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 850M (4 GB DDR3 dedicated)
    and upgrade.
I was also told i could upgrade the processor.
I've been told by a few people that this simply isn't true and to upgrade the Graphics Card i'd need a whole new motherboard... but the term "dedicated" is what's confusing me... am i wrong in thinking that it works seperately and the term "intergrated" means that it's part of the motherboard?
I spent a lot of money on this laptop on the premis of what the assistant told me! Ultimately that i would be able to upgrade this laptop as time went on. (I want to primarly want to use this for gaming)
I'm hoping what people are telling me is all hear say.. it doesn't seem to make sence to me that i can choose between two different graphics cards to run games with and they'd BOTH be intergrated into the mother board....
The other one that's in my machine is an Intel Graphics HD 5500.
Also this machine has a 1 TB HDD and an 8GB SSD, i'd like to also swap out for a larger SSD... i was also told that this was possible.
Hoping for good news here, any help woud be appreciated!

Right now the links to your product manual are down but assuming the 17-k200 series is like the 17-k000 and 17-k100 series there is no easy access to the hard drives and memory. That is, no customer accessible panels on the bottom you can open by just removing a screw. Further, there is no graphics "card" to just "swap out". "Dedicated" and "integrated" refer to the use of memory. An integrated video card shares system memory; i.e. the RAM supplied by the RAM modules you clip into the RAM slots. Dedicated video memory is memory built into the video chip. On a laptop, both kinds of video cards are soldered to the motherboard and cannot be upgraded. Your laptop has "switchable" graphics and most definitely has two different video chips soldered onto different places on the motherboard.
As for the processor, you already have one of the newest and best laptop processors offered. The video you have is also pretty top-notch. I am always a bit baffled by people who buy a laptop with the idea of upgrading it. Laptops just do not work that way. Components are way crazy expensive. Your processor is so new there are none to be purchased but when it does become available it will be over $350. On the very few super expensive engineering and high-end gaming laptops that do have a kind of removeable graphics card (mxm) high-end ones run at least $450. So even if you could do the upgrades, which you cannot, you would be looking at over $1000 with labor. I understand people do not appreciate the cold reality of this.
And just to hit you with more bad news, on your model the CPU might be soldered to the motherboard so it cannot be upgraded at all. I can confirm when your Manual is back online.
Upgrading memory and changing the hard drive for an SSD also requires extensive complex disassembly.
You have one of the best consumer laptops on the market. There is just not much upgrade headroom. It sounds like what you really want is a gaming laptop. HP makes one called the Omen which sells for about $1500-1800US, and would be a little stronger than what you have, particularly in the graphics. But even that is kind of a middle of the road thing. You can order a custom gaming laptop from a company like Sager and it is going to cost upwards of $2500 for the very best. Maybe you can complain to PC World and just return the one you have and start over a little wiser for the trouble.

  • Can I swap out old RAM with new before install of new HD?

I am replacing a friend's HD for her MacBook Pro 5,2 and also swapping out the old memory (2-2GBs) for new memory (2-4 GBs). My question is: does it matter whether I install the new memory before I install the HD or after? If after, does it matter whether or not the HD has been formatted? Has an OS installed on it? Any help here would be very much appreciated!

Your snow leopard dvd will format the HD properly to install the OS. Just replace the HD put in the snow leopard disc and let it do its thing

A search of the MOS knowledge base turned up Support Recommended doc 1009494.1 How to use DTrace and mdb to Interpret vmstat Statistics.
The section titled "kthr: Swapped out Threads (w)" includes the following statements and commands:
To see the kernel threads swapped out during the sample period:
    $ dtrace -q -n 'fbt::swapout_lwp:entry{ proc = (proc *)arg[0]->t_procp; printf("Lwp: %d of \t Proc: %s being swaped out\n",arg[0]->t_id, proc->p_user.u_comm);}'
The vmstat output doesn't tell what processes are swapped out. Mdb(1) can be used to print swapped out processes:
    # echo "::walk thread myvar|::print kthread_t t_schedflag|::grep .==0x8|::eval <myvar=K|::print kthread_t t_procp|::print proc_t p_user.u_comm"|mdb -k
The dtrace command does not pass edit:

  • Heavy NFS use swaps out everything

I mount an NFS drive in Leopard and do some heavy reading (cat * >/dev/null). First this fills all of my memory and then starts to swap out everything else (making everything sluggish and nearly unusable). It stops growing after the used swap is about the size of the real memory. Even after stopping the command, the memory consumption stays the same. The memory is only freed after unmounting the NFS drive.
Same behavior on a PPC PowerBook and an Intel MacMini.
The same command on a local or firewire drive works without problems.
This behavior is different from Tiger, I never had such problems there.
Could someone with NFS mounts please check if they see the same behavior?

    Hi Mikhail
thanks for testing this out. But are you sure about your tests 2 and 3? 2 did trigger here (but after some while), but 3 did not trigger.
I did some more testing, here are the results I got:
    1) 'cat /Volumes/nfs/3gb.data > /dev/null': triggers
    2) 'cat /Volumes/nfs/3gb.data > ~/test.data': triggers, but with a delay
    3) 'cp /Volumes/nfs/3gb.data ~': does not trigger
    4) 'cp ~/3gb.data ~/3gb-copy.data': does not trigger
    5) 'cat ~/3gb.data > ~/test.data': does not trigger
    6) 'cat ~/3gb.data > /dev/null': does not trigger
    7) 'dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024000 count=3000 >~/test.data': does not trigger
    8) 'dd if=/dev/zero bs=1024000 count=30000 >/dev/null': does not trigger
For each test, the computer was rebooted, then some applications where started (login items). 'vm_stat 1' was used to see if the test triggered the swapping out of the applications memory.
So I think piping or /dev/null is not the single reason for this. NFS is definitely involved (filesystem caching), but only in combination with pipes.
Other than with 'cat', the problem can also be reproduced e.g. with mldonkey.
The memory during the test 1) looks like this:
    - free memory goes down, inactive memory goes up
    - when free memory is used up, active memory starts to go up
    - as soon as active memory is full, it starts swapping out. Some small swapping in also occurs.
    - This brings the system to a crawl.
    - as soon as nothing else is left to swap out, it stops swapping out
    - At the end of the test, all application memory is swapped out. Trying to do anything results in the needed memory to be swapped back in.
The memory during the test 2) looks like this:
    - first, nothing happens for a while
    - then suddendly active memory goes up and free memory goes down
    - when active memory use has reached its peak, inactive memory goes up. Free memory goes down some more.
    - when free memory is used up, it starts swapping out. Some small swapping in also occurs.
    - This results in the same result as test 1)

  • Swap out a process forcefully

I like to swap out a process either from command line or inside the application.
Is there a way to do that?

There really isn't a way to do this, per se. But it is a rather odd request.
Perhaps you are trying to do something else? There are many ways
to do resource management on Solaris, but I can't think of a good
reason to forcibly swap a process out.
Most of the time, even when memory is short, the processes will be
paged out. Swapping only occurs as a final ditch effort when there
is a serious RAM shortfall. The difference between the two is that
in a demand paged virtual memory system like the Solaris OE, pages
which haven't been recently used can be paged out. Whereas in
older, non-demand page virtual memory systems (SunOS 3.x, SVR3)
the whole process would get swapped out. Amongst the advantages
of the demand paged VM system is that pages can be shared amongst
processes (eg. shared libraries) and the shared pages will remain in
RAM if used. This complicates matters when you speak of forcibly
swapping out a process. So, is that what you really want to do?

  • Swap out 1.25DP for 1.42DP?

    Hello everyone,
Happy Columbus day holiday to everyone(for Monday). I have presently a Power Mac G4 MDD 1.25DP machine with 2GB memory. Is it possible to swap out the 1.25DP for the 1.42DP, and if so, what kind of speed/performance am I really going to see? First off, is it worth it? 2ndly, will I notice anything at all with the DP 1.42 in place of the 1.25DP? Bear in mind, I am not looking to go to another machine, as I just got this MDD machine and love it very much compared to the G4 Digital Audio machine I have.
I did some research and it appears that the dual processor 1.42 has the same bus speed as the 1.25DP MDD machine. Therefore, is it possible to swap out the 1.25DP and insert the 1.42DP? I also noticed that the bootROM is different on the 1.42DP machine: 4.6.0f2 versus 4.4.8f2 on my 1.25DP machine.
bottom line: from a DP 1.25, is it really worth it to go with the 1.42DP? What percentage of performance gain will I see, and if at all, can it be done? Money is not a problem for me, as I saw this processor and heatsink for less than 250 on ebay a few nights ago.
    Thanks,
    Nadav

    Hi Carl,
Thanks for the reply. 13.6% doesn't really seem a whole lot in performance/speed gain, does it? Anyway, I did call a technician from colorado and he told me about 10-15 percent is all I would notice, and that for each 100mhz up to 500mhz, the speed and performance is really really miniscule, so as of right now I am now concentrating my efforts on getting just the copper heat sink as it has a cooling pump which should aid in lowering my processors down a bit further. Although, as I type this temp monitor reports the cpus running at 92.8 degrees fahrenheit. Now, another thing thats bothering me is the internet speed. My roommate has comcast high speed wireless - doesn't seem to be high speed though it is. Problem: I periodically lose connection or it slows down and gets sluggish.
I am using an airport extreme PCI card(802.11g). Its a Belkin FD57000 card which is similar in speed and strength to the airport extreme card by apple.
Is there a way to boost the wireless performance of a PCI wireless card, or better yet, boosting the performance of wireless internet at all? That seems to be the only bottleneck I am experiencing. His computer which is in the other room not too far from me is a PC running windows 2000 professional and he has a white wireless router.
periodically, I have to turn it off and turn it back on just to get the thing to speed up, but is the problem associated with my card or my mac? I don't think it is, but I was wondering if there is a way to boost speed performance of wireless service. Personally, I prefer wired since really its better and more secure + it NEVER EVER(at least when I had it at one time) dropped service at all.
    Thanks Carl,
    Nadav

  • I recently had to swap out my iphone 4s and I am having problems restoring photos and videos from icloud.  I get a message on my phone that says " the URL you are requesting is not found on this server".  Pics and videos have been deleted too.

I recently had to swap out my iphone 4s and I am having problems restoring photos and videos from icloud.  When I restored my phone from icloud, half of my pics and videos have been deleted, the pics that were restored on my phone are very blurry, and the videos won't play.  I get a message on my phone that says " the URL you are requesting is not found on this server".  I have erased and reset my phone twice, but every time I do it, more pics and videos are deleted.  I have backed up to icloud and iphoto, however, some of the pics are no longer on iphoto either.  Is there someway to get the videos to play on my phone again?  Make the photos not as blurry as they are now and to restore the pics and videos that have been lost?  I really would love to have them back, this phone is supposed to be the best and right now it doesn't seem to be.  Please help if you can.

I too have noticed that once i restored from iCloud. Pictures blurry and videos wont play!
    Need help too!!

  • Is there a way to check if the rechargeable battery is the original?  I have a feeling mine has been swapped out...

I have a feeling my rechargeable battery pack was secretly swapped out by another user (whose battery had died) - left for vacation working computer, returned from vacation battery not charging.  Is there any way to check (serial number, etc.) what battery came with the purchased computer?  Any help would be appreciated.

No, but you could check to see if the battery installed has about the same amount of charge cycles if you were paying attention to that number.

  • How can I tell if the guts of my monitor have been swapped out?

Hey y’all… I have an HP ZR30w monitor that I sold on ebay. The buyer claimed it didn’t work and I had to give the money back. He returned it but there are pixels burned out and spots where the colors are all purple and the case is all scratched up around the seems. The case has the same serial number, {personal info removed}, but I’m positive the guts were swapped out. (I took it apart and screws are missing) It worked perfectly when I shipped it out.
Is there any identification or anything that would indicate if the insides belong to the serial number on the outside?
    Thanks!

    Hello badamsios,
You want to know if you can match the parts inside the monitor to the serial number.
    Sorry to hear what happened.
The only numbers that are going to be on the parts are the part numbers, and they are generic for the part.
    Have a good day.

  • Can I swap out a iPhone 4 sim card into a iPhone 5 with the same carrier?

Here is the situation.  I used to have Sprint as my personal cellphone carrier and just had bought an iPhone 5 when my employer put me on a business cellphone plan that they pay for.  They bought one of the bargain basement original iPhone 4 handsets (not to be confused with the 4S) for employees to use, also on the Sprint network.  The phone is owned by them; the plan is paid for by them.  We just get to use it.  As a result, I decided to just close out my personal cellphone account, even though it was a better phone.  I used my 64GB iPhone 5 as my iPod, it worked great for music, apps, books, etc that I needed, and I just used the 8GB iPhone 4 just for phone calls and text messages.
Well recently, with the 5C and 5S being released, I wanted to know if the iPhone 4 could be upgraded by my employer to a new handset, preferably a 32 GB 5C or a 16 GB 5S.  My employer has been slow to respond, because there are so many employee accounts to weed through and most are perfectly fine with an older phone.  I am not, because the new operating system is slower on an iPhone 4 than an iPhone 5.
I want to ask my employer if its possible to get the SIM card from the iPhone 4 just swapped out into the iPhone 5.  Is that possible?  I understand that there is a size difference in the SIM cards.  Is this something I could do myself, just pop it out and pop it in in the new handset?  Or is this something that will require going to my employer to do, or to a Sprint store and have them do it?  Do I have to be concerned with warranties being voided if I want to do this? (Keep in mind the iPhone 4 is my EMPLOYER's property, and they pay the bill as well.  My inactive iPhone 5 is MY PROPERTY and has no current cellular service.)

I want to ask my employer if its possible to get the SIM card from the iPhone 4 just swapped out into the iPhone 5.  Is that possible?
No, iPhone 4/4S uses micro-sim and iPhone 5/5C/5S uses nano-sim.
