PDA and ISP question - UK

Hi, couldn't think exactly where to put this question. Apologies if it is in the wrong section.
I use Virgin.net as my ISP, and want a PDA/smartphone/Palm etc that will allow me to receive email, sync calendar and address book, and also to function as a phone.
Any suggestions on compatibility and Mac-friendly devices? Blackberry, Palm, or Sony Ericcson 910 are all on the list so far.
If no suitable device exists, I will probably go for a new Powerbook Intel when available. I may do that anyway, if they look as good as I expect!!

There is no difficulty with sending and receiving mail on a Palm device, and you need only the simplest, least expensive data plan most wireless carries offer to accomplish this. The upgraded version of VersaMail - which ships on the latest web-capable Palm handhelds and smartphones - is much more capable than its predecessor, though many users opt for one of the four versions of SnapperMail from Snapperfish:

You need to carefully think about how you want to deploy electronic mail clients on your several devices:
• do you want to use POP3 or IMAP protocols?
• will you route through a major ISP, .Mac or your own mail server?
• will you leave mail on the server for one or more of X devices if POP3 is selected?
• is SSL to be enabled or not?
• will you use SMTP via port 587 instead of port 25?
• do you want to take advantage of optional non-IMAP synchronization opportunities for your handheld?
• what capabilities are offered by your wireless provider?
…and so on.
There is also the matter of push technologies, like those used by Blackberry devices or Blackberry-compatible clients on other devices, like Palm or Windows Mobile handheld organizers and smartphones.
Though setting up a client is quick and painless, there are many variables to the overarching process, and it's easy to end up with an multi-device configuration that frustrates you, rather than working easily and smoothly. In my case, it's a server-desktop-portable-Palm device configuration: four platforms working together to deliver mail to me, where ever I happen to be.
Electronic mail is rather device agnostic, so picking a client you like on the platform supported by it is probably more important than any other consideration.

Spam filtering solution for iPhone and a question.

I've read a lot of posts about spam filtering for the iPhone and have yet another solution and a question. I use SpamSieve and I am not affiliated with them in any way. The nice thing about SpamSieve is that if it is the first rule in your Mail.app rule set any mail that follows has already been filtered. All you need to do then is create another rule that redirects email to what ever mail account you choose. Since my ISP allows multiple accounts, I will simply create an iPhone@myISP account.
Now the question. Is it possible to write an applescript that will turn the redirect rule on or off so that I don't have to dig into the rules section of Mail to get this done?

LabView PDA and Pocket PC2003

I am using Pocket PC 2003 with the LabView PDA.All the documentation deals with Pocket PC 2002. Are there any changes with the Pocket PC 2003? Also I wrote a test application and downloaded to the PDA and that does not seem to execute!Is it bcos of the 2003?

I have exactly the same question. I have LabView PDA 7.0 and a Pocket PC 2003, VIs run ok on Pocket PC 2003 but the problem is when I try to run VIs that call DLLs. The ones that work perfect in Pocket PC 2002 don't work in pocket PC 2003.The DLLs were created using EVC 4.0 SP3.
Are these incompatible?

Thanks for contacting National Instruments. I've been looking into your question about using a PDA and I have a suggestion for you. First off, are you just getting started with the PDA? If so, then I would suggest searching in Help>>Find Examples for "PDA." Here you can find some good examples that I think will help you out. One in particular is entitled "PDA Tutorial-Pocket PC." I would suggest looking at this example and the Getting Started Guide located on your computer under Start>>All Programs>>National Instruments>>LabVIEW>>LabVIEW Manuals. MI7.1 apps for PDA and laptop

Hi,
Till 7.0 for mobile apps there was no difference in dev procedure for laptops and PDAs (as far as my study goes..). Now in 7.1 i can see altogether different dev approachs for PDA and laptop. Now my question is 'Should we have to develop two different applications if i have to develop same application for both PDA and laptop?'. If no then how i can reduce dev time?

Hi Vinay,
well, it is not that different.
Even with MAM3.0 in MI7.0 there had been two different versions - yes it made sence even in the past to develop two different versions of the App. This is because of differences in screen layout and device capabilities.
As long as you follow the MVC approach you work should be fairly save and you just need one development more or less. Business logic, persistence layer and so on is pretty much the same. Ok, on PDA we will use MinDB or DB2e, while on Laptop MaxDB is supported as well. As long as you concentrate on the MI persistence layer you should not worrie about that. But you need separate View development - and this makes sence at the end due to different screen resolutions and so on.

There maybe a problem with either system software or hard drive itself.

Performance issue and functional question regarding updates on tables

A person at my site wrote some code to update a custom field on the MARC table that was being copied from the MARA table. Here is what I would have expected to see as the code. Assume that both sets of code have a parameter called p_werks which is the plant in question.

Here's the question - why did this person enqueue and dequeue explicit locks like this ? They claimed it was to prevent issues - what issues ??? Is there something special about updating tables that we don't know about ? We've actually seen it where the system runs out of these ENQUEUE locks.
Before you all go off the deep end and ask why not just do the update, keep in mind that you don't want to update a million + rows and then do a commit either - that locks up the entire table!

The ENQUEUE lock insure that another program called by another user will not update the data at the same time, so preventing database coherence to be lost. In fact, another user on a SAP correct transaction, has read the record and locked it, so when it will be updated your modifications will be lost, also you could override modifications made by another user in another luw.
You cannot use a COMMIT WORK in a SELECT - ENDSELECT, because COMMIT WORK will close each and every opened database cursor, so your first idea would dump after the first update. (so the internal table is mandatory)

and when I connect it to itunes asked me to restore from my old iphone 4

but I have a problem with my account for icloud password and security questions because my cloude id is *************** and with no problem with my apple id "*****************", I tried to restore my new iphone after I turned off find my iphone from icloud setting and when its restore was finished the iphone is locked and asked me to unlock the iphone with a ****************** that I forget the password and security questions and when I tried to enter my account id "**************** with no problem with its password it says to me "this account can't unlock this iphone"
when I visit tradeline (Apple products dealer) I found no answer and they adviced me to contact apple directly.

If you need to reset you security questions, do not know the answers and no longer have access to that email account, see the last sentence under Note in step 5.
You'll be asked to answer 2 of your 3 security questions before you can make any modifications. If you are unable to remember your answers, you can choose to send an email to your rescue email to reset your security questions.
Note: The option to send an email to reset your security questions and answers will not be available if a rescue email address is not provided. You will need tocontact iTunes Store support in order to do so.

HT1553 I did the back up as instructed... Installed a larger hard drive and followed the restore instructions... Now I get a white screen with a folder icon and blinking question mark. When trying to set startup with new drive I get a bless tool error...

If you have installed a new hard drive , you will need to have formatted it in Disk Utility correctly. This may explain your problem.
Boot into your 10.6 Install disk again at the top menubar > Utilities > select Disk utility and in there select your new hard drive, and select the tab Erase and choose to make the format as Mac OS Extended Journaled. When that is finished look in the main window to make sure that the partition map scheme says GUID Partition Table.
Now go to the Restore tab and reinstall from your backup.

I'm not sure I understand the question. Do you want to log in to the Sponsor Portal using AD credentials?
Create an Identity Source Sequence using AD as an Authentication Source. Go to Administration > Identity Management > Identity Source Sequences. Either Edit or +Add a Sequence and choose from the Authentication Sources shown.
Then choose that Identity Source Sequence by going to Administration > Web Portal Management > Settings. Double-click Sponsor from the Left Menu and click Authentication Source. Choose the Identity Source Sequence. Click Save.
