PDA-based Tools for Producer/Directors?

Anyone know of a PDA-based tool or suite of tools to help a Producer/Director keep track of a small production? Stuff like shot sheets, scheduling, location tracking, ability to import storyboards, etc. Maybe even sophisticated project management stuff, too.
I know there are vanilla project management apps out there, but I was wondering if someone knew of anything customized (or customizable) for independent film and video production.
I'd prefer to carry a PDA, like I used to use my venerable old Newton. But I suppose if the only solutions needed to run on a full-featured laptop, I could live with that.
Anyone have any referrals for me? Thanks in advance.

A construction company here in San Francisco used wireless PDAs with its crew to keep each worker up to date with their duties on the project. Took several monthes off the work time.
I wish there was a Mac OS PDA out there. Smaller pen friendly computers are far more useful that notebooks for a lot of work.
As for software for Producers/Directors. I am going to check out Versiontracker's Palm section and then PDAGold.com My PDA is Win Mobile 5, so, I have to weed through all the palm software to find WM5 programs.
Someone with some SQL skills would make a killing with a PDA app for us to keep track of projects in the field.

[solved] Tools for producing, burning and veryfing UDF BDs

Hi all,
I am currently trying to move the production of my BDs over from Windows 7 to arch. Usually I edit / store all my HD-related videos and burn them to a pure UDF-based BD25. After verification of the burned media I delete the local files. All this is easily possible under Windows by simply using ImgBurn (in essence DVDDecrypter without decryption module). Under arch things seem to be pretty limited when it comes to generating UDF-based ISOs for later burning.
K3B can generate and burn more recent UDF standard discs but fails to add files bigger than 4GB.
mkisofs can generate udf dissk when using the parameters -udf -allow-limited-size but I am not shure about the compatibility with other operating systems (e.g. when I take my external BD drive to a friend in order to watch a HD video with him).
Using udftools plus a loop back image as described here sound also quite cumbersome to me:

Aren't there other possibilities ? I am really close to wrap ImgBurn via WINE and it's CLI.

Update: OK, I have found multiple options
1) One can simply use ImgTool running unter Wine although automisation via script is a bit cumbersome as I experienced double path inside the GUI when being called via bash / WINE.
2) mkdufiso seems to be capable as well of generating UDF > V2.5 (which is critical for producing BDs which run in a BD SAP as it seems).
3) Simply use mkisofs with the parameters -udf and -allow-limited-size produces a perfectly playable BD which I can open under Linux and Windows 7 as well.
mkisofs simply produces UDF in Version 2.0 which is fine for me since my main aim is to store my video collection additionally to my HTPC.
As for the verification I am including a sha1 checksum file of all MKV burned to the disk as well. So I can easily verify the integrity of the BD content after burning by simply calling "sha1sum * && cat sha1sums.txt" inside the directory where the BD is mounted.

I agree with you, it cannot compete grep/sed/awk combination. I couldnt find anything even close to grep/sed for windows which will also have a preview and most important, free. That is what made me write this tool. I am trying to
improve its performance and more features like history etc.
Any suggestions on additional features are most welcome.

there is no general web based tool for FI-AA transactions yet.

Database - Best tool for making report

We're developping an application with HTML-DB. Our users want to extract some reports.Those users are used to work MS-Excel to make reports.
My question is what is the best tool for producing this kind of reports ?
Is it with HTML DB (report), Discoverer or Oracle Reports ?

The answer, as with all of ORacle's products, is "It depends".
Oracle Discoverer, once set up, is very easy to use as a 'developer' and as a 'report recipient' across the web. Looks and feels like Excel. Personally my first choice for a medium user to power user level from a 'create reports' perspective. Prepare to have a Disco Administrator, but that is usually a 'power user' rather than an IT guru.
Oracle Reports is much more powerful, useful for high-end reporting and control of reporting such as multi-bursting to individual printers, caching, PDF and CSS generation - but it requires a person who is interested in becoming competent at reports. It's also a bit of a bear to set up.
A lot of reports can be accomplished using SQLPlus or iSQLPlus. Too many people are not aware of the power of the environment and end up going for high-end tools when SQLPlus will do.
HTMLDB is OK and designed to be simple. I haven't used it much, so I'm the wrong person to comment.

I have purchased Nexus 5548UP switch, i want to know if we have a built-in option for web based tool to manage and configur it just as ASA have ASDM. If there is no such options then what are the options available that can be freely available and can be used to get performance monitoring done.

DCNM (Data Center Network Manager) runs on a server (Windows, RHEL or Solaris) and can be used to manage Nexus devices. It's free for Nexus 1K through 5K devices (paid license required for Nexus 7K management).

Hi all!
I'm happy to announce new 'wifi-select' tool for selecting networks "in real-time" (in NetworkManager manner). I heard on the forums there were requests for such a tool from the users of netcfg. The tool is convinient for use in wifi-cafe or another places you are visiting first (and maybe last) time. Then you don't need to create the file-profile for a new network, just type 'sudo wifi-select eth1' and choose the network you need.
The tool is currently packaged and available in AUR (yaourt -S wifi-select).
It works as follows:
- parses 'iwlist scan' and presents list of networks along with its security settings (wpa/wep/none) using 'dialog'.
- if user selects network with existing profile -- just use this profile to connect with 'netcfg'.
- if user selects a new network (for example network from wifi-cafe he currently visited), net-select automatically generates new profile with corresponding $SECURITY and asks for the key (if needed). It uses DHCP as $IP by default.
- then, if connection succeeds, profile is saved for later usage.
- if connection fails, user is asked if he/she wants to keep generated profile for further usage (for example to change $IP to static or adjust some additional options).
Parsing of 'iwlist' output is done using AWK script (this seems to be clearer than grep+sed in my case). I've put it under /usr/lib/network (where netcfg .subr-files are located).
I sent the scripts to James Rayner aka iphitus (maintainer of netcfg), he was interested and suggested to package the tool in AUR and if there would be some attention and interest -- he would package it in extra.
So, I'm waiting for your feedback and questions.

Tool for building a java application's installer

I'm searching for a tool for creating an installer for a java application. Just found InstallAnywhere... It looks very attractive, but it costs... was wondering if is there anything free.

Well to be brutally honest, I think you'd be better off sticking with Flash if this is a critical project... it would be a great exercise for learning Java, but would probably take w-a-y-y-y-y-y more effort than doing a similar multimedia presentation in flash.
(I haven't used Director, so can only talk about Flash here) - as you know, Flash is really a very powerful authoring tool that allows the user to do very complex animations very easily, whereas Java is a lower-level programming language that is infinitely more flexible, but comparatively more developer-intensive when it comes to producing user interface stuff. Java might be a viable option if you have to do stuff that flash can't, like very complex interactivity, or pulling info from a database etc (although maybe Flash 5 can even talk to databases now??? I don't know)
You can get tools to help you build Java user interfaces using "drag & drop" methods, and these tools will automatically generate the code for you, but (a) this means you're not really learning java, and (b) flash would still be less labor-intensive (and probably more impressive to your end users)
In summary - I'm not knocking Java or Flash - I love 'em both; it's just that Flash is better suited for certain things, and Java is better suited for others...

Summary & Features
It's a common method of setting up a single system: take some notes about what packages you've installed, what files you've modified.
Backpac creates those notes for you and helps back up important configuration files. Specifically, backpac does the following:
maintains a list of installed groups (based on 80% of group packages being installed)
maintains a list of packages (including official and aur packages, listed separately)
maintains a list of files (manually created)
backs up key config files as detailed in the files list you create
The package, group and files lists along with the snapshot config files allows system state to be easily committed to version control such as git.
Backpac can also use these lists to install packages and files. Essentially, then, backpac takes a snapshot of your system and can recreate that state from the files and lists it archives.

Quick install of new system from existing backpac config
Conform current system to given state in backpac config
Backpac is a very, very lightweight way of saving and restoring system state.
It's not intended for rolling out and maintaining multiple similar systems, it's designed to assist individual users in the maintainance of their own Arch Linux box.

Alpha, release for testing among those interested. Passing all tests right now but will continue to rework and refine. Bug reports needed.
Why?
There are a lot of 'big-iron' solutions to maintaining, backing up and restoring system state. Setting these up for a single system or a handful of personal systems has always seemed like overkill.
There are also some existing pacman list making utilities around, but most of them seem to list either all packages or don't separate the official and aur packages the way I wanted. Some detect group install state, some don't. I wanted all these features in backpac.
Finally, whatever tool I use, I'd like it to be simple (c.f. the Arch Way). Lists that are produced should be human readable, human maintainable and not different from what I'm using in non-automated form. Backpac fulfills these requirements.
Regarding files, I wanted to be able to backup arbitrary system files to a git repository. Tools like etckeeper are interesting but non /etc files in that case aren't backed up (without some link trickery) and there isn't any automatic integration with pacman, so there is no current advantage to using a tool like that. I also like making an explicit list of files to snapshot.

This is the command line report. Additionally, backpac saves this information to the backpac groups, packages and files lists and the files snapshot directory.

That's a good idea. I'll add that to my AUR refactoring todo.
I also found directory tracking to be a weakness in other dotfile managers that I tried. I think you would definitely have to recursively list out the contents of a tracked directory and deal with each file individually. Wildcard support would be nice...I just haven't personally found a use case for it yet.
I've been thinking that I could just add the directory and scan through it for any non-default attribute files. If those are found then they get automatically added to the files list. That's pretty close to what etckeeper does.
Edit: I just compiled the dev version and removed my comments for already fixed things...sorry!
The master branch should have those fixes as well, but I didn't update the version number in the package build. I'll have to do that.

Ok, good to know. This wildcard directory business will require some new code and refactoring so I'll also rework my filenames handling.
2. Suggestion: you should make that awesome README into a man page!
I was working on one (the pkgbuild has a commented out line for the man page) but I had to leave it for later. Definitely want a man page. Once this stabilizes and I'm sure there aren't any big structural changes, I'll convert it to man format.
3. Suggestion: add the word 'dotfile' into your description somewhere on this page, the github page, and in the package description so people looking for dotfile managers will find it. You could also consider modularizing the script into a dotfile manager and the package manager, so people on other distros could take advantage of your dotfile management scheme.
I actually have a different script for dotfile management that doesn't touch packages, but there is definitely overlap with this one. That script isn't released yet, though, and if people find this useful for dotfile management that's great. I'll add that in.
4. Suggestion: since -Q is a read-only operation, why not just make it run with -f automatically to avoid the prompt?
Originally, running backpac without any command line options produced the Query output. I was concerned that since it is a utility that can potentially overwrite system files, it is important to give users a clear statement prior to execution about what will be done. Since the Query output is essentially the same as the Update and System reports in format and content, I wanted to be explicit about the Query being a passive no-change operation. The current command line options aren't set in stone though. If you feel strongly about it being different, let me know.
Long answer to a short question
5. Another suggestion: any thought to providing some sort of 'scrub' function to remove private information from the stored files if desired? This would be cool for publishing public dotfiles to github. Perhaps a credentials file (I did this with python for my own configs). Probably detecting email addresses and passwords without a scrub file would be rather difficult because dotfiles come in so many flavors.
Yes, absolutely. In fact, if you look at the lib/local file (pretty sure it's in both master and dev branches in this state) you'll see some references to a sanitize function. The idea there is that the user will list out bash associative arrays like this:

Question: am I missing an obvious option to remove a file from the files.d directory if I delete it from the files list? Or do I have to delete it manually? It might be helpful to add a section to the README on how to update and delete dotfiles from being tracked, and also a more detailed description of what the -b option does (and what is actually created when it's not used).
You are only missing the function I didn't finish. There should be either dummy code or a TODO in the backpac main script referencing garbage collection, which isn't difficult but I just haven't finished it. The idea being another loop of "hey I found these old files in your files.d, mind if I delete them?" It's on my list and I'll try to get it in asap.
And finally, just out of curiosity, why did you choose to actually copy the files instead of symlink like so many other dotfile managers do?
git not following symlinks, hardlinks also out for permissions issues (git wouldn't be able to read the files, change them, etc.)
I definitely would prefer to not make an entire copy of the file, but I haven't come up with a better option. Shout with ideas, though. Also, if there is a way around the link issues I noted above, let me know. I don't see one but that doesn't mean it's not there.

Could you see if you can access the following two URLs on your system? The expected behavior is 404/not-found, but you are somehow trying to install based on metadata from the previous release, which was found in these two files.

Using AE(htmldb 2.0) as for reporting tool for other oracle databases.

Maybe I was mistaken, but when I first saw the HTMLDB demo's I saw this as a slick way to build a browser based reporting tool for the masses for quasi-ad-hoc reporting on some of our larger databases that currently have limited reporting capability, and also as a possible replacement for the many MSAccess applets we have.
I just got 2.0 installed and working on a 9i database and went through the basic tutorials, but I can't find much info on how to connect to other oracle databases.
Are my options as follows?:
create dblinks from the local database that houses htmldb to all the other databases?
or
install htmldb schemas on each database I want to access from htmldb?
or
I'll keep looking, but if any of you have any pointers or know of a tutorial that explains the best way to do this it would be greatly appreciated!

As for question 1, yep, that's what I mean. Example:
In a schema in the App Express instance, create a user called "APP1_USER", and then
create view app1_user.people as select * from people@link_user@remotedb
As for the next question, using the built-in insert/update/delete processes will give you
ORA-01461: can bind a LONG value only for insert into a LONG column
among other errors. Apparently version 2.1 will fix this. See Cannot Update VARCHAR column in Remote DB
We address this problem by creating pl/sql APIs for DML, and then writing our own insert/update processes. Slows us down a little, but even with that, App Express remains a productive choice for us.
Another weird problem: auto-row fetch (built-in to HTML DB) doesn't work over db links when you have two columns for a primary key. Many ways around this, e.g. create sequence-populated primary key, create a view with single column that concatenates primary key column values (key1|key2)

Error during DatabaseCopy using SAP tools for SQL Server (v7.12)

I'm trying to perform a system copy from PRD to QAS. The database has been mounted to QAS via detach and attach method. I did a DBCC on the database and everything looks OK. I'm running SAPINST (SAP Tools for MSSQL) and selecting the Database Copy option. The source database has a schema of DBO. Both PRD and QAS are running SAP 4.7/Basis 620. The target schema is QAS. SAPINST fails in step 2 (Define Params) with:
"This service cannot be used for a system with SAP ABAP release 620"
Is this message misleading? Has anyone receive this message before.
UPDATE:
I donwloaded the latest version of SAP Tools for MSSQL and now it failes during the execution phase on step, "Convert DB objects to new schema".

This is looks like permission issue on source folder
Copy source in to your local drive and try again.
I had same issue and able to resolve after copy EXP1 EXP2 and EXP3 folder in to local drive C: with Everyone full access

External Tables preprocessor in 11.2 as a tool for DBAs

I'm really really excited about new 11.2 external tables preprocessor feature. Oracle documentation show examples based on compressed files and how to load uncompress them on a fly and load them to oracle.
Although that is interesting use of external tables preprocessor, I think what is more interesting is the fact that it can be used outside normal ETL and can be great tool for DBAs who run scripts in unix, now they can execute the scripts from oracle environment (e.g. oracle apex) and read the results of the script very easy way using select * from ... (until now I was using JAVA for executing unix scripts from Oracle environment, this is easier way for sure)

BUT, I have a problem when I use it with Oracle APEX 4.1.
It gives ORA-29913: error in executing ODCIEXTTABLEFETCH callout

We are developing a tool which will control a copy file operation in any folder of Window Explorer base on file size limit.
If these copied files are not satisfied the file size condition (its size is larger than a predefined value), the copy/move operation must not be executed.
My question is that: "Are there any availability support of Windows API/tool for implementing this feature?"
