PDA Question

I understand the process of creating a page for PDA use
(minimal code) but is there anything else needed to "create" and
load the page. Not receiving it on the PDA. Thanks.

Many handhelds and smartphones are capable of linking to the internet and downloading files: either via Bluetooth, WiFi 802.11, a wired ethernet link or via USB to a computer using internet sharing technology. This is generally true regardless of the operating system: many Windows Mobile, the Palm OS, Symbian and hiptop devices can do this, and those which are mobile handsets can also tie to the internet via a GSM or CDMA radio through a cellular provider.
Many are also capable of file synchronization, primarily contact and calendaring data. Other files - including media: music, photos and video - can be synchronized between your handheld and your computer, usually via Bluetooth or USB, or in the case of a hiptop device, servers on the internet accessed by both your mobile handset and a web browser on your computer.
Protected AAC files in iTunes - those you download from the iTunes Music Store - cannot be transfered to a handheld device. Many handhelds support unprotected AAC, MP3 and other formats. The Motorola ROKR - available through Cingular - will download files from iTunes via the Cingular network, and several other providers, including Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, allow the download or transfer of music for a fee.
If you are looking for a handheld music device, look to the iPod, as the convergence between great music, great connectivity to the web and for mail, great coverage for mobile handsets and really powerful personal computing just hasn't happened yet. Many devices get one or more of these about 80% right, but suffer with the other capabilities. It's hard enough to find a great combination of telephone service and personal computing in a smarthphone - most devices represent a serious set of compromises.

  • PDA question for OS X newbie

I will be starting medical school this summer. As such my school requires ownership of a PDA. One of the required specifications is that it run on Windows Mobile 5.0. Will this be compatible with the new MacBook/MacBook Pro that I will be purchasing soon? Any ideas on making the two work together would be helpful. Thank you in advance for your suggestions.
P.S. On a related note, what are people's favorite PDA/PocketPC running Windows Mobile 5.0?

Thanks for your help. I also saw PocketMac. Looks quite similar to The Missing Sync. In the FAQ for PocketMac, they mention issues in compatibility with Intel Core Duo macs. Can't find the same info (one way or the other) on Markspace.com. Any insight? Has anybody had any experience with either of these two pieces of software (I will not be booting Windows on my new Mac - the OS is the whole reason to get a Mac)?

  • PDA questions - emulator

I have build a simple vi and select excecution target to Emulator,
then run it. The connection status dialog pop up. But the progress bar
never progress. After some time, the dialog gone(time out?). Why vi
    not run?

First, select "Build for PDA" (compiles)
    Then, select "Download"
And finally, press the run button.
Then go to the PDA (or emulator) and run the application. The run button simply connects the two together (for debugging/testing), it doesn't actually run it.

I am developping an wireless PDA application on IPAQ 2490 with Labview 8.0 and i have this behavior
    - I have a primary loop wich read and receive continiously the TCP-IP data from computer and show it. on PDA Question here, If i dont receive continiously, i lost the wireless communication after few second. This behavior doesn't not appear un standard TCP connection, It is normal ???
    - I have a second loop in parralel with queuing message. When this loop call a VI with "Open on call option" and this VI start to execute, my primary loop stop. It is normal than only the VI on the top window can run and it stop all the loop in the caller vi.

  • PDA Formatting questions ...

    Environment
APEX 2.2 - I know, I know, we're working on the upgrade, they say 'soon'.
Oracle 10gR2 on the database side
I'm trying to format an APEX application to fit on a PDA screen even though the PDA hasn't been selected yet, I'm using a Symbol scanner running Windows CE as a test bed.
The application runs OK but there are still some blank lines that I can't seem to get rid of.
Here are a couple of questions:
1- Can I change the height of the text and item fields on the screen?
2- How can I get rid of the Region/Page name and reclaim that space?
3- I have 2 buttons at the bottom that appear side-by-side on my PC but are on top of each other on the PDA, can't find out why?
4- Is there a way to put a 2nd label (or free text area) for an item to the right of it?
I'm pretty newbie-ish at this so please be gentle with your suggestions! ;-)>
    Thanks very much! APEX rocks!
    -gary

    Dimitri, et al
I've done as much as I can with the version of APEX I'm currently using, thanks for the suggestions.
I now need to know how to initiate the scanning function on the scanner. I'm using a Symbol NC9060 to test but it looks like we'll be using NC9090 for Production. I believe the NC9060 is running Windows CE and the NC9090 is running Windows Mobile 6.
Is there a function code I need to send to the scanner before we start the application? If so, is that done through APEX or some program outside?
We'd obviously like to use the scanning function to gather barcode information as input.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

  • PDA and ISP question - UK

Hi, couldn't think exactly where to put this question. Apologies if it is in the wrong section.
I use Virgin.net as my ISP, and want a PDA/smartphone/Palm etc that will allow me to receive email, sync calendar and address book, and also to function as a phone.
Any suggestions on compatibility and Mac-friendly devices? Blackberry, Palm, or Sony Ericcson 910 are all on the list so far.
If no suitable device exists, I will probably go for a new Powerbook Intel when available. I may do that anyway, if they look as good as I expect!!

There is no difficulty with sending and receiving mail on a Palm device, and you need only the simplest, least expensive data plan most wireless carries offer to accomplish this. The upgraded version of VersaMail - which ships on the latest web-capable Palm handhelds and smartphones - is much more capable than its predecessor, though many users opt for one of the four versions of SnapperMail from Snapperfish:
    http://www.snappermail.com/wireless/email
You need to carefully think about how you want to deploy electronic mail clients on your several devices:
    • do you want to use POP3 or IMAP protocols?
    • will you route through a major ISP, .Mac or your own mail server?
    • will you leave mail on the server for one or more of X devices if POP3 is selected?
    • is SSL to be enabled or not?
    • will you use SMTP via port 587 instead of port 25?
    • do you want to take advantage of optional non-IMAP synchronization opportunities for your handheld?
    • what capabilities are offered by your wireless provider?
    …and so on.
There is also the matter of push technologies, like those used by Blackberry devices or Blackberry-compatible clients on other devices, like Palm or Windows Mobile handheld organizers and smartphones.
Though setting up a client is quick and painless, there are many variables to the overarching process, and it's easy to end up with an multi-device configuration that frustrates you, rather than working easily and smoothly. In my case, it's a server-desktop-portable-Palm device configuration: four platforms working together to deliver mail to me, where ever I happen to be.
Electronic mail is rather device agnostic, so picking a client you like on the platform supported by it is probably more important than any other consideration.

  • PDA is under the environment of Jeode, carry out applet question with swing

Purpose : Under the environment of Jeode in PDA, links APPLET webpage on websites, and APPLET is " import javax.swing. *".
Question: Not knowing the problem of how to go to solve swing bug of applet , it is unable to read webpages to cause pda.

Right. Make "number" a field, and take it out of the
    method signature for paint.
Because you didn't use the same signature, you didn't
override the existing paint(Graphics) method, you
just overloaded it. That means that when the GUI
thread tries to make your applet paint itself, it
calls the original paint(Graphics) method, and not
your paint(Graphics, int) method -- and so your
    method never gets called.
    Hi Paul,
Not to sure whether is this what you mean by above statement, i just understand the statement in bold, anyway i ammend the program , this time i declare another variable outside the init() and paint() call int num
    import java.awt.*;
    import javax.swing.*;
    public class Draw extends JApplet
        int num;
        public void init()
        \\ask user for input (1, 2 or 3) = String numberStr

        public void paint(Graphics page)
            for (int index = 0; index < 100; index++)

  • IPod as a pda - multiple questions

    Hey all,
I'm becoming obsessed with adding an ipod touch to my small collection, but I have a series of serious questions before I take the leap.
    1. does the ipod function as a good PDA? I want to synch with my work's MS Office, specifically to have all my contacts with me.
    2. can you have the ipod check a hotmail account? I know it works with gmail...
    3. I understand it can read and review Word documents, but is there an option to open and manipulate them as well?
There may be more as a followup, but thank you in advance!

I’m having a good deal of success using the Touch as a PDA to complement my Office/Outlook system at work. If what you really want is the Touch to sync with Outlook like a PocketPC, the biggest problems are that it won’t sync Notes, Tasks, or inbox messages, but it has no problems I’ve experienced syncing Calendar and Contacts. Where it really shines as a PDA is if you basically migrate your Office/Outlook to the internet. Within iGoogle, for example, I’ve got the Gmail apps set up to basically be the internet home for my Office applications at work (Gmail for my inbox, Contacts for my Contacts, Calendar for my Calendar, Notebook for my Notes, Google Docs for my documents and Remember the Milk for my Tasks). In other words, my office is on the internet iGoogle.
IGoogle to Office/Outlook: Outlook POPs or IMAPs to GMail, so the inbox stays in sync. There’s a Google app that keeps the two calendars in sync. Syncing contacts isn’t seamless yet (I still have to export/import to keep them in sync, waiting for an app to do that). I’ve stopped using Tasks and Notes in Outlook and just post these in RTM and Google Notebook or Google Documents. Both Google Docs and RTM also allow you to email a Document/Note or Task to them.
ITouch to Office/Outlook: Contacts and Calendar sync fine in both directions – I haven’t had a lot of the syncing problems that are getting posted elsewhere on this site. And actually, this works great even in situations where you have your music on your home computer and just your Office/Outlook installation at work. The ITouch syncs at home, to get music, and when you want to sync your office apps you plug in the ITouch to your computer at work, hit Cancel at the prompt to sync with the ITunes library on your work computer (since of course there isn’t one if you work where I work), and it will go ahead and grab the Bookmarks, Contacts, and Calendar off your work computer. The Notes field in a Contact syncs fine. The only problem I’ve had is that I can’t seem to sync the notes field in recurring calendar appointments. Nonrecurring appointments sync the notes field fine. So if I want to minute or take notes at a recurring meeting in my calendar, I have to create a separate nonrecurring meeting at the same time if I want the notes to sync (for recurring appointments). Email messages, Tasks and Notes won’t sync between the Touch and Outlook, but as mentioned above, I keep these in IGoogle now.
ITouch and iGoogle: Mail syncs fine, with either POP or IMAP connections. Contacts are already synced when I leave the office. The trick here is getting new ones synced. You can either enter a new one on the ITouch and let it sync with Office when you’re back at your desk, or you can access Gmail Contacts with the browser and put a new one there. Until there’s a Gmail/Outlook sync for Contacts, all you need to decide is if you want to export from Outlook to Gmail or export from Gmail to Outlook. Ditto Calendar – a new appointment will sync with office when you return, or you access Gmail’s calendar with the browser and put a new appointment there, which will sync with the Outlook calendar when you’re back at your desk. Access Tasks by going to RTM or accessing the RTM gadget in iGoogle. Or create a new one in ITouch Notes and email the note to RTM. I take notes now either in the notes field of a calendar item, or the notes field of a Contact, or by creating them in ITouch Notes and emailing the note to Google Docs or RTM.
I’m almost at the point of abandoning the IPaq – the internet experience with the ITouch is infinitely preferable to the Windows Mobile browser, I think. And I used to swear by the Transcriber – loved ‘handwriting’ with the stylus and its conversion to text – but the ‘keyboard’ entry on the ITouch is surprisingly good – to the point where it’s almost astonishing at how it understands what I meant to type.
Basically, if you can make the leap to having your Office on the internet instead of on your desktop at work, the ITouch is a great little PDA. And on that note, I’ve put MobileMe, Office/Windows Live, Zoho, and iGoogle through their paces and have landed on iGoogle as the most capable/versatile solution, but that’s another chapter.

  • Question about "bluetooth PDA-syn" option?

    HI there,
I would just like to ask under system preferences, under bluetooth, under advance, there is an option called "bluetooth pda-sync", in its box, should I check or uncheck this option? what is the option "bluetooth pda-sync" for? what is its usage?

If I am not mistaken, it is probably used for file sharing. If you don't have a phone that can send and receive data from your mac, then you can switch it off. But switching it off will not make a difference.

    Dear Simon,
On behalf on national Instruments I apologise for this troublesome bug's inclusion in LabVIEW 8.6, and we thank you for bringing it to our attention.
The corrective action request (CAR) my colleague made on your behalf has been accepted by R&D. This quarter's Dev Suite was what we call a "minor software release" - 8.6.1 being a revision of the 8.6's architecture. The issue has been forecast to be fixed in the next major LabVIEW release. Unfortunately, as we have yet to set official release dates, I am unable to speculate on when this will be available to you.
I apologise I can not help you further. However, I assure you that the R&D team in the States are working on resolving the issue.
    Best wishes and kind regards,

  • How do I use directional PDA buttons in LabVIEW programs?

    Hi all,
I've been assigned to get a LabVIEW program to work on a Palm PDA with LabVIEW 7.0 and palm PDA module 7.0.  I am basically totally new to LabVIEW, and my possibly very simple problem is, the PC program requires input from a serially connected number pad for the 8, 4, 5, 6, and 2 keys which are used as four directions (8, 4, 6, and 2) and an enter (5).
I am trying to rewrite the input vi to use the directional buttons and middle enter button on the PDA itself but am having trouble figuring out what to use.  I am using a PDA simulator because of the PALM OS5 we own.  The input demo vi example provided will not build for PDA because of size so I am unsure of how to approach this.  Another thing is, we have LabVIEW and PDA module for pocket PC 8.0, and a Dell Axim PDA on order.  From what I understand off of this website, the latest PDA module has example button vi's.  I would still like to figure out the way to do this on 7.0 so I can have a better understanding of LabVIEW.  Eventually the program's endgoal is to be used on a PDA and inputting with a bluetooth keyboard, but we are going step by step right now.
I guess my biggest questions are, how do I assign the directional buttons on the PDA in my program, and will this differ greatly when we switch to 8.0 and pocketPC.
Oh and I did try to look at the example asteroid.vi but from looking at the input subvi, still couldn't figure out how they assigned the buttons.
    Thanks,
    Stephen

I can't help with any specifics (no access to the PDA module at the moment and I didn't use the buttons anyway), but I would like to say that it probably would make a big difference if you used LV 8. 7.0 was the first version of the PDA module and was extemely limited and problematic (it didn't even have a tab control). 7.1 was somewhat better and I understand that 8 is even better (although still very limited and buggy).
I also remember reading about several differences between Palm and PocketPC and I think you will generally be better off with the PocketPC as it's related to windows and will probably support more stuff.
Try to take over the world!

  • IPod Touch newbie questions - pt. III

    Last questions:
    1) I downloaded a few apps from the Apps Store and noticed that a few would not load. They kept cycling and cycling and never completed. I then realized that I had to connect to a Wi FI network, which I am lucky enough to have at home: Verizon FIOS.
Could Apple consider marking any Applications for download, free or for sale, that requires a WiFi connection to the web as such? This is very user unfriendly and should be info that we have up front. There may be some people who don't have such WiFi connections at hand depending on where they live and if they download one of the fee based apps and find out they need an internet connection to work it, they will be royally ticked off.
    2) The Progression "scrubber bar" - could this be linked to the playback controls in a future firmware update? On my Classic the info was always viewable and one did not have to enable it. I feel it should show automatically and be disabled as an extra step.
By the way, what do they mean by "scrubber?" Nothing is cleaned or erased in my estimation. This is needlessly confusing. Must be a slang term I'm unfamiliar with.
    3) Lastly, not sure about this but is there a way to download lyrics for songs into iTunes/iPod? If so I guess I've missed this somewhere. If not it would be a great extra to have on the player, particularly, for jogging one's memory or clarifying words to a new song that some singer mangles badly.
** I would just to to reaffirm that I may seem a little picky in my posts here but considering the complexity and variety of functions this machine can handle, the beauty of design and interaction with the user and other factors, Apple has done a great job developing this PDA/music player/etc. I only wanted to clear up some issues and maybe submit possible improvements for the future.
It's been a long time since I've been so impressed by a new piece of technology and I've been around for some time.

    Hi,
    1. I kind see your point and it would not be difficult to implement but generally you can tell how an app works and what it will require from the description. I do know some Apps have virtually no description with them which is unforgivable but then I probably wouild not spend money on them in the first place.
    2. "Scrub Bar" industry standard term for that particular item, just because it does not erase as in your sense of the word "scrub" does not mean it is wrong. To any Video/Audio tape editors it makes perfect sense.
I don't think having to touch the screen to summon it is that big a deal.
    3. To view lyrics on the Touch they need to be added to the track in iTunes.
Right click > get info > lyrics, then cut and paste into the box.
I fear you may well become irritated once more as to see them you will have to summon the "scrub bar" while the track is playing...
    Regards,
    Dud.

  • So many wireless questions in my move to australia--HELP

I'm moving to australia and I have many questions--please forgive the length of this. First I had been waiting for the Palm Centro to move to Verizon because my Tungsten E is dying. Now that I'm moving I'm going to need to buy a cell phone in Australia--versus trying to get an unlocked one here I think. I see that they have Centro, but not with the big server Vodafone, which leads me back to the iphone. I avoided it because I don't want to pay for all the services I don't need. All I want is the PDA to link with my iBook G4 (still with Panther) easily to have all my contacts from my Tungsten E. I hear Palm may even be discontinuing the PDA's all together so I really do need to make the move. Yet the other big PDA, the blackberry doesn't sync easily with the mac from what I hear and read. Anybody have suggestions about a good solid phone/pda that I can use in Australia with my iBookG4? Can I spend just $199 here on an Iphone bring it with me, hook it up there with Vodafone and just use it as a phone/pda without any of the internet features?
Second question is related to communication when I first land in Australia to my husband in LA. I was told that I could use my ibook at any airport with Skype. Is this true? How? I have airport for our wireless SBC modem here, but Im guessing I would need some special USB unit. but is that the way to go. I was thinking to buy an international Mobal phone for $50 just to have for the first few days until I get internet set up over there and can start trying to figure out skype? I suppose I could try a phone card from a payphone but $50 seems like a small price to pay for communication in the beginning...unless there is a brilliant idea I hadn't considered (hence my writing here)
I am really clueless here. any suggestions, websites, links I should consider would be very appreciated. More than I can say since there are a million other details about this move that are taking up space in my head.
    thank you in advance.

Same thing happened to me and I did a reset twice but the problem doesn't go away. It's Apple's video player that has problems. You don't want to reset it every time it happens, right? Get another video player, any player will do. I got flex player for free. Now I don't have any problems playing my videos any more.

  • Shopping for a T61 - questions about the OS and various h/w options

    Hi,
I am considering buying a Thinkpad T61, but it's been a while since I have bought a computer, let alone a laptop, so I thought I'd ask a few questions here.
I have worked on several Thinkpads T-series at work before, and I liked them, but they were all provided to me by my employers.
I am browsing the different models on the Lenovo Canada web site; the US site looks just the same.
The use I would make of the computer is typical office work (Word, Excel, e-mail), synchronize data with a PDA, Internet browsing, some limited web (PHP) and image editing (Paint shop pro), and listening to digital music. On occasion, watch a movie on DVD.
    I don't play 3D games.
I would use the computer with a docking station and an external keyboard, LCD monitor and mouse when I am at home.
I am looking at the T61 models with 15-inch widescreen, integrated graphics and no mobile broadband.
1.) Operating system: obviously, Vista is recommended by Lenovo, but I have heard so many negative comments on this OS that I wonder if I shouldn't stick to XP. Even on this forum, I see posts about problems with Vista. Any advice on that?
2.) I already have a license for XP on my previous machine. Assuming I buy the Vista with this one, then I would legally have the right to install either system on it, right?
I know the machine doesn't come with an install CD, but if I get one somewhere else, would I be able to install it, or does the OS come with some weird DRM system that will prevent me from installing another OS than the exact copy of the one that was shipped with it?
I ask this because I'm fairly certain that I will want to change the way the system partitions are set up.
(this might sound like a silly question, but the acronym DRM became so prominent in recent years that I want to make sure)
3.) The website says that some T61 machines come with an integrated camera. Later on in the detailed descriptions, I don't see it mentioned anywhere. Which do and which don't come with the embedded web cam?
4.) 15.4 WXGA TFT vs. 15.4 WSXGA+ TFT : what are the resolutions of each?
5.) Hard drive: I would go with a 7200 rpm model. Is there any benefit to getting the 1GB drive cache?
6.) DVD recordable option: how fast does it record CDs and DVDs ?
    Thank you in advance.
    Chris.-

    Hi Kevin
about the speakers I cannot advice.
Regarding the driver - if there is a driver update availabel from TOSHIBA (important!!) then use it! That means they have found some kind of bug in the original driver and released a fix for it. I do not recommend you to use the nVidia generic driver since it might make the PC behave bad. StandBy / Hibernation might stop working properly. Power consumption might go up....and so on.
Regarding the BIOS. The BIOS'es are a special chapter - when upgrading the BIOS the machine re-writes a very special part of the 'hardware' (actually it's a software installed in a chip that does not go away when you turn the computer off, it is sometimes also called firmware). That firmware is needed (among other things) to get the machine to start and load the operating system.
If the re-write process fails it could mean that the firmware is not able to start the machine anymore. And if the machine does not start at all, you will have no chance to retry writing the firmware. So that mean the machine will be dead and you will not be able to do anything about it except turning to an ASP and possibly pay for the service.
So, that said, it is very important that you have a realiable powersupply (which you normally have with the AC Adapter) and that you make 100% sure that you use the correct BIOS-file.
If you can accomplish those 2 small things there should be no problem upgrading the BIOS.
    BR
    Tom
