PDF and Safari

Everytime I try to get a PDF file loaded from a web site I get the message that the page failed to load and to check Activity. Activity says "plugin cancelled"
I have Adobe Reader 7.0.8 installed. In Safari security I have "enable plug ins" checked. I have Safari 2.04.

I have exactly the same setup and the same problem. Many of the pdf's on Apple's Aperture pages will not download. I just get the "plugin cancelled" message and a blank page. I've reinstalled Adobe Reader but no help.
Anyone been able to find a way around this problem?

    Hi
    Please take a look to this thread Re: Can I refresh the browser rather than open a new tab?

  • I'm trying to open a PDF from Safari with iBooks, but when I choose "Open with ..." in Safari, only Pages and Dropbox show as options.  I'm running iOS 7.1.2 and iBooks 3.2.  Thanks for any ideas!

    On my iPad, I'm trying to open a PDF from Safari with iBooks, but when I choose "Open with ..." in Safari, only Pages and Dropbox show as options.  I'm running iOS 7.1.2 and iBooks 3.2.  I have rebooted the iPad and that did not help, and reinstalled iBooks, which also changed nothing.  Thanks for any ideas!

    Yup, it was uploaded to our school Wiki as a PDF, and Pages did open it.  I was then able to move it to iBooks, but I'd rather avoid the extra steps.

  • Preview and safari do not display images in a pdf, where as chrome will. How do I fix this?

    I'm on the newest OS X Yosemite and I have an issue with viewing pdfs in both preview and safari. The figures show up fine from Chrome. This also leads to the issue of when I try to print off the pdf. The images do not appear in the printed version.
    Safari/ Preview:
    Chrome:

    Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
    If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
    There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
    If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
    and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
    from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
    From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
    The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
    Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
    If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Only headers and footers appear attempting to print PDFs in Safari 5.0.2

    I am a Mac user trying to help my friend, who uses Safari 5.0.2 on his PC. He can open PDFs within Safari, but when he attempts to print them, all that appears are headers and footers (same thing appears in Print Preview).
    Any suggestions?

    One thing that might be worth a try is uninstalling and then reinstalling his Adobe Reader, Don. (The theory is that that should swap out the nppdf32.dll file governing the Adobe PDF plugin used by Safari.)
    Any better printing performance following the Reader reinstall?

    Drag them to your iTunes library.  Download the free iBooks app.  Select the PDFs you want too sync in the iTunes books pane.  The iBooks app will show your books collection or your PDFs collection as you select.

  • Opening an FDF that references a PDF in Firefox and Safari

    Our ASP.NET application serves up fdf and the associated pdf files from an underlying database.
    We use Fdfacx to generate the FDF with a reference (set using FDFSetFile) to a PDF.
    Both FDF and PDF URLs have parameters.
    When we use IE7, all works fine, but in Firefox 2 & 3 and Safari (all on windows), the FDF is loaded, but the PDF is not requested from the server.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    TIA

  • PDFs with Preview and Safari:

    When I open a web based PDF in Safari and then choose "open in Preview" where is that file that I am now viewing in Preview located? On the web still? downloaded to the hdd? I can't find it in a spotlight search.

    I had a similar probem after updating to the newest Safari -- and I posted that question on the forum this morning.  Like you, I didn't have any adobe plug-ins.  then I read another post that made sense:
    find a pdf document that you know opens in Preview. Do a command-I on that document's icon.  Then you'll see 1/2 way down an item that says "open with Preview" - click on the arrow beside that, then beside it you'll see "use this application to open all documents like this one"  Under that, you'll see "change all" -- and it will change all pdfs to automatically open with Preview instead of Adobe.From then on Safari worked perfectly
    Then I wondered why I didn't have the Adobe plug-in that people were telling me to disable - so I downloaded Adobe Reader again - looked in the library and sure enough there was the plug-in - so I went ahead and disabled the Adobe pdf plug-in (by dumping it in the trash).
    so far so good -- first time that Safari 6.02 has worked for me since I installed it.

  • Does Safari support a interactive PDF with hidden layers? I'm on version  5.0.3 and the interactive PDF displays just fine, but our web development team tells me all the layers display when they view the same PDF on Safari.

    Does Safari support interactive PDFs with layers? Through the use of hidden layers and buttons we built in interactivity that allows the viewers to click on buttons to display different content. When I view the PDF in Safari 5.0.3 on my Mac OS 10.5.8 the PDF displays fine and the interactivity works. However our web design firm tell me the PDF displays all the hidden layers when they view it in Safari. Who's right?

    Try updating your Safari to the latest version, 5.0.5.
    Also check whether the rest of your system is up to date by going to Software Update in the Apple menu.

  • Word PDF Hyperlinks and Safari

    I have a word document that contains a series of HTML and PDF links.
    All html links in the document open fine on the Mac, whilst PDF links, open in Safari as garbage/ASCII code. If I cut/paste the link into Safari directly, the PDFs open fine, or if you cut/paste the link into Safari's download manager, it downloads the PDF and they open fine in preview. This issue is also explained in this archived post http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2275472
    Following is the testing I've done to date.
    • On a Mac OS X 10.6.6, Adobe Reader 10.0.0, Safari 5.0.3 with Word 2011 the PDFs opens as garbage in Safari.
    • On a Mac OS X 10.6.6, Adobe Reader 10.0.0, Safari 5.0.3 with Word 2008 the PDFs opens as garbage in Safari.
    • On a Mac OS X 10.6.6, Adobe Reader 10.0.0, Safari 4.0.3 with Word 2011 we get an error "Unable to open http://.pdf Cannot download the information you requested"
    • On a Mac OS X 10.6.6, Adobe Reader 10.0.0, Safari 4.0.3 with Word 2008 the PDFs opens as garbage in Safari.
    • If Firefox is configured to be the default browser, we are prompted to download the PDF file and it opens fine in Mac OS X Preview.
    • In Parallels/Windows 7, when we open the document in Word 2007 for Windows and click on a PDF link, it opens in Safari (for Mac) fine.
    • In Safari, I have disabled the AdobePDFViewer.plugin by placing it in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins/Disabled Plug-Ins, that made no difference. So I think the whole Adobe Reader aspect has nothing to do with the situation.
    • It works fine in 10.5.8 with Safari 3.2.3 and Word 2008.
    • Happens in a .docx and a .doc document
    • If I open this link directly (PDF Link from Apple) in Safari -http://download.info.apple.com/AppleSupport_Area/Manuals/macos/0342049.PDF It opens fine as a PDF within Safari. Click on it as a link pasted in Word, I get the same issue.
    • In Open Office with the same document all the links including PDF links work in Safari, except OpenOffice has lost a lot of the formatting of the document.
    • In NeoOffice with the same document all the links including PDF links work in Safari, except NeoOffice has lost a lot of the formatting as well.
    • Using iWork /Pages with the same document, all the links work fine.
    My conclusion is that Word for Mac is the culprit. A colleague advised me that in his opinion, when you click on a PDF link in a Word document, and you see the message “Word is preparing to load this document”, it is not sending the correct “content type” to Safari and therefore Safari does not know what to do with the document.
    I am playing around with a preference pane called “Default Apps” from
    http://www.rubicode.com/Software/Bundles.html#RCDefaultApp
    To see if it can help the situation. Yet it’s a little difficult when external clients need to read this document, and I do not feel comfortable installing or recommending to install third party plugins/solutions so they can read our document, it should just work.
    I have also submitted this to Microsoft.
    I have thought of a workaround though and it has been tested and works, embed the PDFs into some HTML code, and use the HTML code as a web link in the Document as opposed to a direct link to a PDF. The code would look something like this.
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <BODY>
    <embed type="application/pdf" src="http://www.example.com/example.pdf#scrollbar=0" width="100%" height="100%"/>
    </BODY>
    </HEAD>
    </HTML>
    Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.
    Regards Chris.

    I, as well, have this same problem. Further, I want to convert the Word 2011 doc to pdf and have links that work. Forget it! I have to use some other app to do that. Right now, I am using deskPDF Editor to "update" all the links the the pdf doc. That works. BUT, when I need to change the original Word doc, I have to create another pdf and do all the links updating again - over 30!
    I am attempting to find a pdf-to-Word converter, either online or stand-alone, that can get me back to Word with the links intact.
    So far, all of this has been a real bummer.

  • CS6/Yosemite: in Safari when opening a PDF and want to save the pop-up is english while the system language is german

    Hi,
    I installed end November last year on my new iMac the CS6 Master Collection. The language and country ist german. All menus and titles are correct. In Safari (8.0.2) PDFs are shown with Acrobat instead of the preview. When I want to save the PDF the pop-up window where to save the file is in english instead of german. How can I set it to be displayed in german?
    All menu-items are german, clicking the floppy-symbol will open the shown window. The list-items on the left side are in german but all labels, buttons and titles are english.

    If you are printing to physical printer from Safari : Use Reader print button from Reader toolbar
    If you want to save a PDF from Safari to your local : Use Reader Save button from the Reader toolbar.
    PS: if you have PDF in read mode the  hover the mouse at the bottom of the page and the floating Reader toolbar will appear.
    Please let me know if this solves your issue.

  • PDF Documents with Functional Buttons - Works for IE and FireFox but not for Chrome and Safari

    To all,
    Good morning.  Our institution developed a PDF document with functional buttons for printing and e-mailing.  When the document is viewed via Internet Explorer and Firefox, the functional buttons work as expected.  However if the document is viewed via Chrome and Safari, the functional buttons do not work.  The workaround for those who are using Chrome and Safari, the PDF document needs to be saved to their local drive before the functional buttons work.
    Has anyone experienced this issue before?  If yes, what was your solution other than the workaround.
    Thanks.

  • Safari cannot handle pdf and forms

    I have two G4s using Tiger and Safari, identical settings. One can read pages which have pdf, and can fill out pdf forms. The other (newer) G4 cannot fill out pdf forms. I made sure that both have the same plug-ins in Library>Internet plug-ins, and now the newer G4 will not even read pdf pages.
    When I open a page with a pdf, it asks me to "select an Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader application to use". I have the latest Adobe Reader installed, but when the request to select comes up, Adobe Reader is GRAYED OUT.
    There is nothing in Safari's amazingly lame Help about this, and no other information available, as far as I can tell. Apple's tech support has been fading fast, and is essentially gone from the Apple Stores except by paying special fees.
    Can anyone provide a solution to this problem?
    PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.2.x)

    Do both use the same OS version and Safari version. Per the Acrobat readme.html document,
    Mac OS X v.10.3.x or later and Safari 1.2.2 or later are required to use Adobe Reader in a browser window.

    Have you installed Adobe Reader and its associated plugin? AFAIK, that's the preferred if not the only way to open PDFs in an embedded view within Safari.
