PDF as podcast episodes in itunes?

I have seen this question asked before in forums but with not with an answer.
I want my video podcasts also to have pdfs downloaded as separate aside podcasts. I've seen this done many times especially in language learning podcasts. Can this be achieved using iweb?
Dropping the pdf into a placeholder doesn't work.
Thank you!

I’ve seen .pdf files in iTunes also. I’ve done some investigating as I may be using this feature in the future for lecture suppliments. This is what I’ve found:
As you may know, you can create an ‘enhanced’ podcast in Garageband. This will allow you to place images (any kind – like lecture slides) or even .pdf files as ‘chapter markers.’ There should be a little tutorial (video I think) about how to do this with Garageband. There’s a plus and a minus to adding extra content this way. The plus, is that you can present images to your listeners at any point in the podcast. If they have the latest version of iTunes (or maybe even earlier – I’m not sure) they will see this extra content in the ‘album art’ window. They can click on the content and see it full size in a separate window. In addition, you can give this content a url – meaning that listeners can click on the link and go to a webpage or even a .pdf file (hosted somewhere). The downside is that this embedded content is ‘one dimensional.’ I tried to embed a multipage .pdf file and was only able to access the first page (because the podcast treats this as a chapter marker). All that to say that this ‘enhanced’ podcast is not what you are seeing on iTunes.
The .pdf files that you see in iTunes come from the RSS feed of the subscribed podcast. I found a tip on doing this here:
http://www.digitalproducer.com/articles/viewarticle.jsp?id=48529
This seems to be how it works: When a person subscribes to the RSS feed, it’s a simple file on the web somewhere. This file tells iTunes what to go and get, as well as things like content and file type. You can have an RSS feed that tells iTunes to get a podcast and a corresponding .pdf file. It’s actually pretty cool.
But here’s the hang-up: iWeb creates your RSS feed. And like most things in the 1.0 version of iWeb, advanced things require work-arounds. It looks like iWeb creates a RSS feed from your podcast blog structure. I don’t know of anyway of altering the RSS feed (like you would as shown in the link above) except for just ‘getting in there.’ As we know, iWeb has a tendency to create brand new files when performing changes. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if your ‘altered’ RSS feed that includes the .pdf link goes away when you add a new podcast episode (hence creating a new RSS feed). That means a lot of tedious work every time you add a new episode (to re-alter the RSS file to include the .pdf files).
Here’s what I see as the least ‘bang you head against the wall’ solution. Use an enhanced podcast with urls to the pdf files. You can add the file to the main episode page in your podcast or have it hosted on an ‘invisible’ page on your site. Listeners in iTunes will be able to link to the .pdf, and listeners off the iWeb page will also have the .pdf in front of them. iWeb should be OK with this, as the RSS feed isn’t being changed after publishing and the links should be stable. The other solution is to create podcasts and not separate pages for the episodes (just drag the podcast files to a folder on your iDisk under iWeb). This way, you can create an RSS feed that includes the .pdf files. However, this means that people will only be able to listen (and get the .pdf) if they are using iTunes with a subscription to your RSS feed.
Hope this helps
Man I can’t wait for iWeb 2.0 (c’mon March!)

  • Removing podcast episodes from iTunes 12 but keeping the files

I want to be able to remove a podcast episode from iTunes 12 but keep the audio file on my computer. This used to be an option, but now I am no longer asked if I want to keep the file. It's just automatically moved to the Trash. I like to archive podcast episodes on my external drive, but I don't always feel like getting the drive out when I'm done listening, plugging it in and dragging and dropping the files. I'm lazy like that. I would keep the episodes I plan to archive on iTunes until I feel like breaking out the drive, except that brings me to my second issue: my podcasts seem to all be set to automatically delete played episodes after 24 hours, at least depending on what view I'm in. I have "Delete Played Episodes" set to "Off" in my default podcast settings, and when I context click a podcast in the "My Podcasts" view and select "Podcast Settings" it says "Delete Played Episodes" is "Off". However when I go to the Playlists view, select an episode and click the "Settings..." button at the bottom, it always says the selected podcast has "Delete Played Episodes" set to "On", even if I click to change it to "Off" in that view. So there's obviously a contradiction there. I don't want to take the chance that my played episodes will be automatically deleted so the sooner I get them off iTunes the better. Unfortunately that means deleting them, then dragging them from Trash back to the iTunes Media/Podcasts folder and into each appropriate podcast folder, which is annoying. Please tell me that the removal of the "Keep the file" option is just a bug. If Apple is, for whatever reason, trying to discourage me from moving my played episodes out of iTunes and onto another drive, then I'm just going to stop using iTunes altogether.

The iTunes Store reads your feed at intervals and caches the contents (the information, not the actual media files): when you make a change to the feed it usually takes 1-2 days for this to be reflected in the Store. Pinging doesn't seem to make a lot of difference. Very occasionally it all slows down and can take several days.

  • How do I delete a podcast episode in itunes 11?

I typically download podcast episodes in iTunes and then sync them with my phone. I listen to the podcasts on my iPhone and then delete them when done. I have been doing this for years. Now, I cannot figure out how to delete the individual episodes from my podcasts in iTunes 11. What am I missing?

    You and me both!
I started out with an Apple+ way back when.  We came back from Christmas vacation to a faculty meeting where an AEA (Area Education Agency) employee was to introduce us to this new BIG DEAL - computers!
Afterward, the math/science people the superintendent expected to get so excited took a walk while his ENGLISH department learned to type 10 HELLO, etc. until you got a document window open and could enter text, AND CORRECT IT, causing it to print out WITHOUT mistakes.  My typing skills were non-existent, so I went to the elementary teachers and borrowed a program they used to introduce students in second grade to the keyboard.  (I was a jr./sr. high school teacher, and nobody could figure out why I'd never been taught to type.
    Sigh.
I SURE HOPE THEY GET OVER THIS MESS IN A HURRY!  I want to go back to i-Tunes 10+ whatever I was at, but Lion won't let me dump i-Tunes, as it is part of the OS.  BUMMER!
Most of all I hate the sneaky way they introduced this, just like it was a regular upgrade, not something that would ruin our work methods of many year's standing and giving us NOTHING to replace it with short of scrolling down through 1700+ podcasts.  UCK!

  • Does anyone know how to delete a podcast episode from iTunes?

    Hello,
Myself and some comrades have been producing a podcast for a few weeks now. We were approved to be on the iTunes store, and subsequently available as a subscription thru iTunes... The problem is that for a few days the hosting site we're using wasn't working and we couldn't upload mp3 files, so we were publishing episodes and for the audio we were uploading them onto an alternate site and linking the audio to the published podcast so they would still be available for subscibers thru iTunes. Now, the hosting site is working again, and I'm trying to edit the episodes that were published using links to the alternate sites and change them so that they're using the audio from my hosting site. I've editted the episodes on the hosting site, but even after doing a 'podcast refresh' (ping) the old episodes are still showing up on itunes...
Anyone have any ideas on how to delete or edit individual episodes on itunes without deleting the entire podcast???
If you have an answer to this problem, or if this isn't making sense but u think u might know what i'm trying to ask please email me at iwantitnow (at) hush (nospam) com
    Thanks in advance!

    Hey there,
so here's the itunes store URL for the podcast i'm referring to:
    http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=321340618
here's the URL for the podcast blog:
    http://anotherworldispossible.podbean.com/
I'm not sure if that's what ur asking for, but in case i'm wrong, here's what i think is the feed url:
    http://anotherworldispossible.podbean.com/feed/
You'll see what i mean if you see the podcast blog site, the post at the top, "Anarcho-Syndicalism" is published by uploading the mp3 onto the hosting site, the post underneath that, "the coming insurrection (part 2)" is when the upload function wasn't working, and it just has a link to the mp3 hosted on another site. (itunes subscribers still can listen to it, and it doesn't appear different, but for visitors who usually listen using a live stream from the host, it looks different) I'm trying to go from the second post's setup to the first post's setup without re-posting it and having the same file show up twice in itunes which has already happened. also, since i did that already (deleted the post, then re-published it), is there a way to delete the first file (episode) that still shows in itunes for subscribers to our channel??
thanks so much for your help!

  • How to show all available podcast episodes in iTunes 11.2.2

Since I upgraded iTunes to 11.2.2, I can no longer view a list of all available podcast episodes. It used to be available from a right-click on the name of the podcast itself.
For example, I subscribe to PBS Frontline audiocasts. I had deleted an old episode that I wanted to hear again. When the option wasn't available, I unsubscribed, deleted all old files, then re-subscribed. Now only the latest episode appears and there's no option for showing or downloading old episodes. I can't seem to even find the settings that instruct iTunes whether to download "latest" or "all" episodes.
Any idea what's become of these commands? Have they been removed or tucked away in some other place on the interface or menus?
    Thanks.

    Hey SteveFH,
In iTunes 11.2.2 you can find what was previously called "all available episodes" now in the My Podcasts tab.
    How?
    (1) In the iTunes Sidebar (the list of folders on the left-hand side that shows folders like Music, Movies, Podcasts, etc.) click on Podcasts.
    (2) Just under the iTunes Toolbar click on the My Podcasts tab
    (3) Select the podcast name you wish to work with
    (4) With the podcast you wish to work with selected, click on the Feeds link in the Title area.
    (5) Click the cloud icon of each podcast episode you wish to download.
Note: Some of the names I've given to things in iTunes may be my own and you may need to reread these instructions if I've gotten the specific names of things wrong, such as 'Title area', etc. But you should be able to follow along well enough.
    Best Wishes!

    <Email Edited by Host>

It's a really bad idea to post your email address - it's an invitation to spam - and I've asked the Hosts to remove it. This is a user-to-user forum and no-one is going to contact you by email.
Your feed is at http://pod.ssenhosting.com/rss/ftpom1.xml . It contains one episode, and when subscribing this shows in iTunes. The iTunes Store web page at the address you give shows this episode, but the iTunes Store page within iTunes does not, even though you may notice that it claims to be showing one episode.
We've seen this peculiar behaviour before; it appears to be a glitch in the Store and as you've evidently done your part correctly there isn't really anything you can do except wait and hope it sorts itself out.
You could try emailing Support at podcasts 'at' apple.com, but to be honest I doubt you will get any sort of useful reply - though you've nothing to lose by trying.

  • Why can't I see new podcast episodes in iTunes?

I only subscribe to a couple of podcasts but have several where I pick-and-choose from new episodes to download and then listen to on my iPod.
Under past versions of iTunes I would simply right-click on a podcast in my iTunes Podcasts folder, select "Show all episodes" or something similar, and the latest episodes would appear at the top and I could pick and choose which ones to download. However, under the new version, I don't see that option anymore. All my podcasts seemed to have stopped at approximately September 24, 2013. I can hit "show old episodes" and it reveals ones older than that but I can't see the ones added since. Deleting all podcasts and then downloading a new episode from the store doesn't help either.
What am I missing? I don't want to subscribe to the podcasts and download episodes that don't interest me. The only workaround I have found is to just go to the iTunes store, search for the podcast, and then download new episodes from there but that seems unnecessarily cumbersome when in the past I could just use a couple mouseclicks or less to see what was new. I feel like I must be missing something obvious...

Carolyn's response is of no help.
Do I understand correctly that the feature where you could see the available podcasts in your podcast list is now gone?  Thge only way to see a podcast you are not subscribed to is to go to the iTunes store?  That s**ks!  The iTunes store is slow; it displays images I don't want to see, and it is tedious.  Can someone recommend a good Android phone and tablet...

  • Podcast episode in iTunes feed but not on preview page

I have been experiencing different behavior with my podcast in the iTunes store this week. My latest two episodes took a couple of days to update in the iTunes feed when for the past two months they have appeared within an hour.  What concerns me is that they are not displaying on the preview page for my podcast in the iTunes store, even the one that was published two and a half days ago. Apple's email support persists in telling me how to submit a podcast to the store and suggesting that I phone support and ask my question for a fee. Liberated Syndication tells me that the feed URL is accurate and that the episodes in question have been published. It also says several of its customers are experiencing this problem currently with iTunes.
    Any ideas?
    My feed URL is http://astroinsight.libsyn.com
    My iTunes URL is http://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/astroinsights-podcast/id479652731

    Your feed is at http://www.cooksux.com/theahhashow/podcast/podcastblaster.xml
iTunes is unable to read this feed because there is a fatal error in the episode of 27 November. The 'itunes:subtitle' tag contains an ampersand ('&') by itself - because an ampersand indicates the beginning of a code sequence which is never completed, and this renders the feed unreadable. You need instead to use the code
    &amp;
as you have in fact done elsewhere. Since this is in episode 5 this is why your subscription stopped at episode 4. I'm not clear how the Store has managed to keep updating, except that the Store and the iTunes application are quite different things and it may be that the Store software has been arranged to ignore this error. Anyway, make the change and it will work again. (Make sure there aren't any more instances of this.)

  • How to add multiple podcast episodes to itunes?

I currently use iWeb to create my podcasts. I dont know how to add each episode to itunes. I currently have one listed under itunes but i want to add more from iweb. Can anyone help? Thanks
    Ramon Cardona

I'm wondering if you're trying to import music files with digital rights management (DRM)? Also, sometimes iTunes doesn't like mixed types being dragged together, e.g. AAC and MP3 or MP3 and WAV or AAC. You should be able to drag and drop a whole folder. Don't know if that's much help. Maybe you could provide more details on file type, where you're copying from.

  • How can I download all podcast episodes in Itunes 11.1.3?

When I subscribe to a podcast, only the first episode downloads (in spite of my default settings, etc.). Now I have to manually click on each little "cloud/arrow"
icon and download them individually. Before apple developers took stupid pills and created this latest version of Itunes (that everyone hates), I could easily download all episodes at the click of one button (I mean DOWNLOAD, not just LIST all episodes, which is all it will do now when you request all episodes).

It seems to work for me.  Select the entire podcast, or specific episodes from a podcast or podcasts.  Right-click on the selected items and choose New Playlist from Selection.
iTunes 11.x may hide the sidebar (along the left side of window).  It looks and works differently from earlier versions (before iTunes 11), when the sidebar is hidden.  To show the sidebar, from the menu bar, under View, select Show Sidebar.  With the sidebar visible, it works (mostly) like it did in previous versions.

  • How Do I Keep Podcast Episodes in iTunes 11.1.x With the "Auto-remove played episodes" Option Set?

In the previous version of iTunes, I set the podcasts to auto-delete played episodes. If I wanted to keep a specific episode of a podcast, I could right-click that episode and choose to “keep this episode/do not remove this episode”.
Is there a way to do this in iTunes 11.1.x? The option under the right-click menu seems to have disappeared. Is there some kind of new logic to this? Or is the option to keep certain episodes and automatically remove everything else gone?
Basically, I want the behaviour described under Hold on to your hits.

What really cheeses me off here is that Apple isn't allowing users enough customization.  With each update of iTunes (and the OS and iOS) we're forced to give up something that worked well for the way we want to use the app and make do with fewer (and lamer) options.  If Apple keeps this up, they're going to start losing customers fast.  I mean if this isn't fixed soon, I'm pretty sure I'm going to give up on iTunes, and then I'll probably go ahead and get a Galaxy when I need to replace my iPhone.
What I don't understand about how they won't let users delete the list of available podcasts now is why?  How is this making it a better program?  I can understand that not all users are capable enough to right-click on a feed and select "Show all available episodes", so I can see why they want the complete list to be the default (and, surprise, it already was).  But to not give users the option to delete that list?  It's inconsiderate because it makes navigating feeds with a large back catalogue really frustrating.  I'm flabbergasted that no one at Apple considered all the podcast feeds that keep hundreds of episodes available when they removed this feature.  It smacks of rank incompetence.
What improvement were they trying to make here anyway?  There was nothing wrong to my mind about how podcasts were managed in previous versions.  Whatever improvement they were trying to make here, they should have realized that many users would at least want the option to keep things the way they were.
And reverting to a previous version is no solution.  I can't sync my iPhone with the new iOS without this update, and (while I do have some issues--specifically how you can't play podcasts in the Music app anymore) I do like the new iOS.

  • Why am I losing podcast episodes from iTunes?

I'm fairly new to iTunes as a podcaster and initially had 5 podcasts listed. For some reason 3 of them have vanished, leaving only the two most recent episodes. Can anyone help?

    Hi Cameron,
Here's what I think is happening. Your feed contains both blog posts and podcast items (which is OK - iTunes just won't display any <item> that hasn't got an <enclosure> tag). Your feed though has exactly 10 items.
So I suspect that, as you post new blog items, they are pushing out podcast entries and shortening your podcast feed.
Is there a setting you can change in your blogging software to increase the number of items in your feed? It might also be worth seeing if you can have a separate podcast feed, and just use that in the iTunes Store.
    Hope this helps,
    Greg.

  • Why is it that whenever I delete an individual podcast episode in iTunes do the entire subscription get deleted?  iTunes version 11.0.1n

I have upgraded to iTunes 11.0.1 recently and have sadly discovered that there is some kind of glitch present that has deleted and entire library of archieved podcasts as well as the subscription to the podcast as well. Can these be recovered? Is Apple aware of this?

Thanks for the input. Yes, I am aware that I can, (to an extent) locate the lost podcasts and download them again, but then "knowing" exactly what was lost becomes an issue, (?). I had renamed all of these to indicate the content in a more comprehensive way, and...using my computer to retain these things, is really the point...yes? To eliminate the necessity of remembering a lot of minutua, and free up your organic hardrive for more important things. The real issue here is that too many times I have experienced the coerced methodology of Apple, (as well as other software providers) to mandate upgrades or loose ability to utilize that which you have in good faith bought, ( and should be able to utilize until it breathes it's last breath) only to be forced into "upgrades" which don't work as well as what you are upgrading to...and round and round and round...

  • Adding new podcast episodes?

After being approved, how do you add more podcast episodes to itunes through iweb?

As you add new episodes to your podcast, they will automatically become part of the rss.xml feed and people who subscribe to your podcast feed through iTunes will eventually get the new podcast episodes. This is pretty much the purpose of having RSS feeds, so that people can subscribe to one feed and automatically get new updates as they become available.
As with your podcast description, it just takes a little while for your feed to get updated with new episode information. Actually, everytime you access the rss.xml, you should be able to see the updates.

It's only that I'm not clear why you are reluctant to post it. If you have a podcast in the iTunes Store then it's there for the world to see - they might search on its subject or title, for example, even if they don't actually know about it from you. If you look at other posts in this forum you will see that usually people post their URLs and then I can examine the feed and hopefully find out from that what the problem is. Without this information no-one can give you anything more than wild guesses.
