PDF Compression

Hi
I have a number of pdf;s that are each around 280kb in size. The content of these pdf's is a small image in the beginning and remaining text. I have to download and view these pdf's in iPad device. Although the size of the pdf is small, but there are a large number of pdf's that are to be downloaded.
Therfore, it is required to compress the pdf's in such a way that the download is comparatively much quicker.
Could anyone please suggest a suitable way of compressing the pdf's. Using some of the tools the maximum compression that I can achieve is 26% since the content is mainly text.
Note: The pdf's are getting created from Offce docs: MSWord/MSPPT
Regards

Reader can't do anything to help. You can use Adobe Acrobat to optimize PDF's (reduce file size) to an extent (depends on the PDF).
The offer a free 30 day trial for Windows. I would give it a shot and see if it will help.

  • PDF Compression in Oracle Reports

We are testing Oracle Reports 6.0.8.13.1 that came as part of
    Oracle 9iAS (v 1.0.2.2.1) on Windows 2000. When we generate a
PDF report , we do not see any compression of the pdf file
taking place and the generated pdf report is using pdf version
1.1. The database that is in use is Oracle 8i which is on a
    different box.
Isnt the pdf version that is used in Oracle 9iAS Reports service
supposed to be pdf version 1.4.
Is there anything wrong with this reports server installation or
are there any other settings/pre-requisites to get pdf
compression in Reports to work. Also please see my earlier

    Thanks in advance.

There is no PDF compression with Reports 6.0.8 and iAS 1.0.2
This is a new feature of the upcoming product release iAS V2

  • Colorsync Utility: PDF Compression vs. Reduce File Size filters

What's the difference between these two? I used Automator to make two applications, which I think I screwed up, because they're not reducing file sizes now. 1 would make 100+ pngs into a pdf and use "reduce file size," I think. 300 MB would become 80 MB, e.g. I would then use a not-so-great PDF application called PDFStudio9 (because I lost my Acrobat DVD and couldn't get a replacement) to OCR that reduced-size pdf. At which point I would run the other application, which I think compressed the OCR'd pdf. Which would be about 40 MB at the end. But I'm not sure if that's the order of compression I used.
So what's the difference between the two types of filters, and when would I want to use each for ultimately creating a non-titanic-sized pdf?

    Cathy,
You have posted your question in a forum dedicated to the Final Cut Studio application Color. It is a very specialized program to grade (adjust) the color in video/film images. We know nothing regarding PDFs.
Have you tried posting this on an Adobe support site?
    Good luck,

  • WC7845 Scan to PDF Compression type

Hi We have a WC7845.  With the Scan to PDF feature, we can select between 3 different levels of compression, but the type of compression is always the same: JBIG2. Is there a way to change the compression for Scan to PDF to CCITT? Thank you,-Dean

Assuming Workflow Scanning CWIS > Services > Workflow Scanning > Default TemplateScroll to bottom and Edit in the Compression Settings to get what you want  For previously created templates go to the same place in those older templates

  • Preview PDF Compression?

In Lion it has been impossible for some time to prevent Preview from compressing PDFs. I don't want to compress my PDFs. Does anyone know if this problem is fixed in Mountain Lion?

Glad this was useful to you. And indeed, I don't know what happened to the original screenshots...
I encountered this problem as well.
The solution is to move the filters from:
    /Users/YOURNAME/Library/Filters/
    to:
/Library/Filters/ (you may have to create this folder)
In other words, in OSX 10.7(.2), the filters need to be in the main system-wide Library, not in a user's Library.
And yes, the PDF Quartz Filter functionality in Preview has moved from the Print dialogue box to the File > Export command.

  • Compressed PDF Output

    Greetings,
We are doing R12.1.1 AP testing. when we run the concurrent program "Format Payment Instructions" (IBY_FD_PAYMENT_FORMAT), the output is set to PDF. According to our third party cheque print software, it cannot handle "Compressed PDF" files. This is the first time I have heard about "Compressed PDF" files. Does anyone know of a workaround, given our current configuration?
    Thanks...colin

Pl see if MOS Doc 205295.1 (New Feature: PDF Compression) can help. Reports 9i and later releases turn on PDF compression by default. I am not sure how it can be turned off in an EBS environment

  • How to retain the PDF's compression when changing the PDF version?

    Hi,
I need to change the PDF version from "1.5" to "1.6" without changing the original PDF compression (i.e compressed object streams) using "Acrobat X pro".
I had tried to change one sample PDF version from 1.5 to 1.6 using "PDF Optimizer" and found the following results.
    ================================
Input PDF contains the following properties:
    Document Properties
    1. Total pages:256
    2. PDF version: 1.5
    3. Tagged PDF: No
    4. Fast Web View: No
    Available Compressions (Identified through "Preflight>Pages")
    1. Page description is compressed for all the pages (256)
    2. Pages has compressed object streams for "254" pages except "Front Cover" and "Back Cover"
Output PDF contains the following properties:
    Document Properties
    1. Total pages:256
    2. PDF version: 1.6
    3. Tagged PDF: No
    4. Fast Web View: No
    Available Compressions (Identified through "Preflight>Pages")
    1. Page description is compressed for all the pages (256)
    2. Pages has compressed object streams for all the "256" pages including "Front Cover" and "Back Cover"
    ================================
"Pages has compressed object streams" found  for all the "256" pages (but input PDF has only 254 pages) including "Front Cover" and "Back Cover".
But I want to retain all the properties of input PDF with version change. This is my actual requirement.
I hope that Acrobat expert will offer some useful suggestions for the above. Thanks in advance.
    Regards,
    Raja. S

    Thanks for the reply.
I had tried everything under "Clean Up" option (PDF optimizer>Clean Up) but "Pages has compressed object streams" applied automatically.
Note: If I check the option "Optimize the PDF for fast web view" under Clean Up, then output retain the required source PDF  compression. But I must not change the source PDF to "Fast web view".
This is not testing purpose and this is one of our client requirement. Kindly advise with better solution to solve this issue.
    Thanks,
    Raja. S

  • Compress PDF vs. Reduced File Size Quartz Filter?

Sometimes the PDFs I produce through the print function get pretty huge.
In the PDF drop down on the print menu there is a compress PDF option that I sometimes use.
Then someone said I should go to print, to the copies and pages, select "colour sinc" and on the Quartz Filter select "Reduce File Size" then hit the "save as pdf" on the pdf button.
I have no idea what I just typed
What's the difference between the two approaches and which would produce the best quality PDF at an manageable size?
I just tried PDFing this page using the three options -- regular pdf, compressed pdf and that colour sink / quartz filter / reduce file size. Damned if the smallest file isn't the regular (at 76 kb) next is the reduced (92kb) and the largest file is the compressed (140kb). Maybe not a proper test but what the heck?
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

I believe that the same filter is applied no matter whether it is done through the Compress PDF button, which is an Automator action, or using ColorSync.
If you would like to experiment with it, you can also apply it through the ColorSync Utility. If you copy the Reduce File Size filter, you can change the amount of reduction done. You can preview the results there, too.
The filter only affects images, not text.

  • Placing a PDF file in an InDesign Doc and PDF again for a vendor- Good or Bad?

Current debate in the graphics department is
Is it good or bad to place a PDF (general Press Quality) into an InDesign document and then creating a new PDF file with print vendor settings from that document?
My thought is that you in some cases are double compressing, lower dpi images getting compressed, RGB color mode images okay on layout but now are converted to CMYK and shift in the PDF.
Are there other issues and if so what are they.
Also is there an easy way to check ppi, color mode and compression of an acrobat PDF? I mean other than doing a preflight and searching into each image folder twenty levels deep. FlightCheck and Enfocus are not options,
too many vendors and not enough time.
Thank you all in advance for your words of wisdom.

Dov, I just got off the phone with a trusted professional in the Prepress field at a quite reputable print house, and he said "Dov is the guru of PDFs, ask him this...Will the InDesign CS3 preflight see the characteristics of a PDF (color mode, dpi(ppi), compression) if the original placed PDF is created as a pdf .X4 (1.7)? Ask him also if you were to use one form of compression (say lossless) in the original PDF, and then another form(say lossy) in the vendor PDF would it hold both or convert the first PDF compression to the second form?"
Any other responses are also welcomed.

  • Quark / PDF Printing Problems (Save as PDF in OS X)

I upgraded from Quark 4.1 to 6.5 about a year ago, and ever since then the files I create and print don't look as good. The primary issue seems to be color -- colors don't come out as deep, there seems to be less color saturation, sometimes colors are just pretty far off. I'm working in Mac OS 10.4.8.
For many years my method has been to design documents and output as PDFs to be professionally printed. These days my PDFs don't print as well. I suspect that the problem has to do with the process of creating the PDF. In Quark 6.5 I create PDFs by selecting "Save as PDF" from Quark's Print menu. Back when I was using 4.1, since Quark didn't have a built-in PDF-creator, I would go into the Chooser, select AdobePS as my printer, and then just choose Print in Quark and it would "print" to a PDF.
One other problem I've had since the upgrade is that the PDFs Quark creates are HUGE files -- tens or hundreds of megs -- often too large to email. When I used to create PDFs from the identical Quark files using 4.1, the resulting PDFs printed much better and were much smaller files (often far less than 1 meg). Solving the color problem is a higher priority for me than solving the file size issue, though.
I've spent a lot of time trying to troubleshoot this with our local printer here in Albany, NY (the same guy who printed my stuff in the old days, when it came out looking a lot better). Things we've tried that haven't seemed to solve the problem:
    - Increasing the LPI to 300
    - Checking the box for Full Resolution Tiff Output
    - Experimenting with OPI active and not
    - Experimenting with different PDF options like "Save as PDF," "Compress PDF," "PDF-X," etc. (Compress PDF does result in smaller PDFs, but the quality of the resulting prints is even worse)
Also, if anyone has suggestions about Quark-specific forums I could post this to, let me know. I tried creating an account on the discussion forms on Quark's website, but I don't receive their confirmation email to confirm my account.
Any advice greatly appreciated -- thanks so much!

    Marshall,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
colin clarke1’s info is spot on. I will add a bit more. Acrobat Professional includes Distiller in addition to a print driver called Adobe PDF 7.0 (version number matches version of Acrobat). I think the print driver installs automatically, but if not, you should choose to install it and then it will show in your list of printers. This will allow you to make PDFs from Quark XPress much as you did with Quark 4.1.
Distiller comes with some pre-defined Settings (formerly know as Job Options) for different types of printing, i.e., Smallest file (low-resolution like online viewing), Standard, High Quality, Press Quality and others. These Settings are general standards in the industry in terms amount and type of image compression, font embedding, color management, compatibility with previous Acrobat versions and etc.
colin clarke1’s method of saving a Quark doc as a PostScript and then distilling it is one method. (You can set this in your Quark Preferences.) Alternatively, you could do the following within Quark XPress…
    (a) Select Print, which brings up the Print window. At the bottom of the window are some buttons. Click on Page Setup and in its window, for Format for: select the Adobe PDF 7/8, the appropriate Paper size and then OK.
    (b) Returning to the Quark print window, make all the necessary choices for Layout, Setup, Output, Options, Layers, Bleed, OPI and Profiles.
    (c) Next, click on the button Printer (at the bottom) which brings up a Mac OS print window. Click to the right of Printer and select Adobe PDF 7/8. Next, click and hold on Copies & Pages for a drop-down list of options and select PDF Options. Click on the bar to the right of Adobe PDF Settings and a list of Distiller Settings will pop up and select the one that best fit the type of printing you are doing, e.g., Press Quality. If you want to see the PDF version afterwards, then select Acrobat for After PDF Creation. Click Ok.
    (d) Returning to the Quark print window, click Print button (lower right). A Save window appears for you to name your document and select where you wish to save in on your computer. (If you choose to see the PDF afterwards, then Acobat will launch and the PDF will then appear in Acrobat.)
You could learn more about the latest version of Acrobat 8.0 (released November 2006) by Adobe’s “tour” at http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobatpro/productinfo/features/
    Hope this helps.

  • Hyperlinks don't activate in the PDF file

    Hello all:
I'm working with Pages (v. 1.0.2) and cannot get the text hyperlinks (going to URLs) to work. They work in the Pages app. But when I Print > PDF > Compress PDF, the created file has blue underlined text all right, but when I hover over these links, the cursor doesn't change to a hand that activates the hyperlink(s). Incidentally, although text hyperlinks aren't active on these PDFs, one email hyperlink I've set up on that same PDF DOES work. Go figure!
What might I do to activate every text hyperlink? (If valuable, is there a way to attach the PDF on this Apple Discussion forum for testing purposes?)

The numbers with % marks get inserted when you use non-"web-safe" characters in your hyperlink. Web addresses are generally best if they only have letters, numbers, forward slashes, and simple punctuation (e.g., - or _). If a URL has a space in it, that is generally converted to %20 (this is known as "escaping"). A single quote would be converted to %27. An actual percent sign would be shown as %25 in a URL. (You can see the codes by looking in the hex column of the table at http://www.asciitable.com/ ).
I think what is happening in your case is that you are beginning with a legitimate with URL with %20 and %27 codes in it. But then somewhere in the process it gets "escaped" again, and the % marks each get converted to %25. Sounds like a bug somewhere between Pages and the PDF writer -- the text is getting escaped twice, and the second time shouldn't happen. You might want to report this to Apple as a bug.
In the mean time, you can make prettier and more reliable URLs by avoiding those weird characters entirely. For example, you could stick in underscores (_) instead of the spaces and single quotes in your original filename, and then it will sail through with no trouble.
