PDF convert to PDF/A-1b problems

I would like to convert my existing archive pdf files into PDF/A. I read on the forum that PDF/A-1b is less critical than 1a so I went with that. Using Acrobat Pro 9 and starting from "clean" (generated by Abbyy Finereader 8) pdfs, the conversion (using Preflight Conversion to PDF/A-1b) generally fails with the following errors:
Preflight profile 'Convert to PDF/A-lb (sRGB)" found the following errors:
xConvert to PDF/A-lb {1 object)
xFlatten transparency {high resolution) {1 object)
xRemove all alternate images {1 object)
       xDiscard hidden layer content and flatten visible layers (1 object)
       xDiscard hidden layer content and flatten visible layers (1 object)
       xRecompress LZW as ZIP (1 object)
       xPDF document is not compliant with PDF/A-1b (2005)
         xAnnotation has no Flag entry (42 matches on 33 pages)
         xAnnotation not set to print (42 matches on 33 pages)
I have no idea what this is all about. Besides, I thought I was running a conversion, so why doesn't it convert? Is there anything I can do?
PS. When I save a fresh scan using Finereader 9 set to generate a PDF/A file and I try to verify it with Acrobat Pro 9 (Verify Conformance..) I invariably am told the verification failed.
Luuk

I suppose it is more likely that Abbyy got it wrong than that Adobe did not implement the standard as they should have in Acrobat Pro 9? I did some further testing and put together a PDF file on the basis of tifs. I let Acrobat 9 OCR this file and subsequently converted it once to PDF/A-1a and once to PDF/A-1b. Only the last passed the verification by Acrobat; the former failed with a bunch of errors again (see enclosed screen shot). Am I expecting too much when I assume Acrobat can generate proper PDF/A-1a files on the basis of clean tiff files?

    Hi ,
    There is an option of embedding index for faster search while converting email to a PDF .
    However I am not sure that will serve your purpose or not .
    I would recommend you to get in touch with Microsoft support as well .
    Meanwhile I'll work on it and get back to you in case I get a desired solution .

    Sounds as if you used Microsoft software to make a PDF. If so, and you didn't use Adobe Acrobat ($$), then you need to get help with Publisher -- Adobe Reader only shows what you make.

    Hey -
    Thanks for taking the trouble to respond - appreciated. I did post the details you requested and sent you IM about that. Anyway, the problem
    appears to have fixed itself as soon as I opened Acrobat9 Pro it
    reconfigured itself and everything is working again!

  • New document: How to avoid known PDF email attachment problems

    Have you ever had problems with PDF attachments sent from Adobe Reader for iOS using Share > E-mail Document?
    You may find this document useful to avoid the problems.
    How to avoid known PDF email attachment problems
    Please let us know if you have encountered different types of problems with PDF attachments.  We can look for solutions or workarounds for you.

    Unfortunately, we (Adobe Reader mobile team) do not know if/when Apple will fix the attachment problems (software defects) in Apple Mail.
    In particular, the attachment problem with Microsoft Outlook (See Problem #2 in How to avoid known PDF email attachment problems) appears to be a long-standing defect that has been known for years.  However, Apple has not provided any fix for Apple Mail yet.
    Adobe Reader for iOS merely launches Apple Mail (the default mail app on iOS) to send a PDF document as an attachment.  Adobe Reader has no control over whether or not to embed a preview image of an attachment in the body of an email message, which is known to cause the problem with Microsoft Outlook (on the receiving side).  The same problem happens when you send a single-page PDF document as an attachment along with an email signature from Apple iBooks on iOS.
    For now, all iPad/iPhone users can do is to avoid the problems by using the workarounds that are described in How to avoid known PDF email attachment problems.
    When new and different problems with PDF attachments are reported by Adobe Reader for iOS users, we will update the document above.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.

  • ADOBE PDF - print driver problem converting Publisher 2007 to PDF

    I cannot find an answer to my problem anywhere online. Our company does not have InDesign yet, so I have to use Publisher 2007 (Vista operating system) to create ads. The problem is that when I go to print and choose ADOBE PDF to convert the Publisher document, the PDF output is 1/4-1/2" smaller all the way around. It is perfectly sized in Publisher, but the PDF output keeps reducing. Is there a fix for this? Thank you.

    I suspect it is a shrinking issue in Publisher (check the print properties). A lot of packages reduce the margin so it will print all of the information on printers, many printers add margin space. At least worth a check.

  • RightFax and PDF result in 'Problem Converting Fax Body or Cover Sheet'

    Hi All:
    We are trying to send out faxes of invoices and reports to our customers.  We have RightFax software and have used it for a long time.  We are converting our reports to PDF and send them to RightFax.  I am getting 'Problem Converting Fax Body or Cover Sheet'.  I can create a PDF from a word document and it will send it, but files output from SSRS errors.  What is different between the two.
    PhilPHuhn

    Hi All,
    We use RightFax and to get around the problem of
    Problem Converting Fax Body or Cover Sheet we were told to
    open up the PDF you want to send and click print
    Select the RightFax printer and hit print.
    It will now open up the RightFax window with the PDF attached and you just add in the telephon number and other details
    as you would send your fax.

  • PDF Converter for Acrobat Pro 8 problem in windows 7 (64)

    Hi,
    I just recently upgraded to Windows 7 - 64 bit and I am getting the following error message when I try to print to the Adobe PDF printer:
    %%[ Error: undefined; OffendingCommand: setdistillerparams; ErrorInfo: CalCMYKProfile U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2 ]%%
    %%[ Flushing: rest of job (to end-of-file) will be ignored ]%%
    Error accessing color profile: U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2
    %%[ Warning: PostScript error. No PDF file produced. ] %%
    I am using Adobe Acrobat 8 professional version 8.1.4 that came with CS3 Design Premium and have installed all current updates. Regardless of the chosen program (Word, Excel, Photoshop) when I attempt to print to the Adobe PDF printer, the print job stops at about 10% completion with the above error message.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Kyle

    Thanks everyone for the helpful hints.
    In the end I unstalled and then re-installed the entire Adobe Premium CS3 in Windows 7 (64 bit). The big difference was loading the adobepdf.dll_64 file at the proper point during the installation process.
    Adobe has published a full explanation of this issue at the following URL:
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/401/kb401731.html
    Once installed, it's also important to update Acrobat 8 to the latest revision to get the PDF Converter working again.
    Thanks again,
    Kyle

  • PDF File Size Problem

    Hi,
    I am using Adobe Acrobat Elements 7.0 in my computer to convert files like .txt and .doc to .pdf files. But currently I'm facing a problem with the converted .pdf file size. For example, my .doc file is 5MB and after I convert to a .pdf file, it becomes 10MB. The file size basically multiplies itself by 2.
    I've tried converting .txt and .doc files and it gives me the same problem. I've tried reinstalling, tried all kinds of settings, and recreating user profile but it doesn't help. Can anyone help me? Thank you very much.

    Sorry. The problem is caused when I want to password protect a .pdf using elements. So I used Adobe Reader to open the .pdf file then I'll print using Adobe Printer so that I can password protect it and output file size is actually 10 times the normal .pdf file.
    Please help!!

  • PDF with hyperlinks problem

    Hi all.
    I have a PDF document that I generated from a word document. The word document was created using Office 2007 on a windows XP PC. I converted the document to PDF using Acrobat 9.0 Standard. Upon conversion, the hyperlinks within the PDF file worked fine for me. My PC has IE8. I sent the document to the administrative assistant in our office to review the PDF document. When she clicks the links, she gets the security window asking her to allow or deny PDF access to the web. She clicked the button to allow the link, and then nothing happens. No browser window opens. I checked her machine and it's an XP box with IE7 on it. She is using the acrobat reader 9. I asked a few other folks in the department to try clicking the links and their computers acted as expected. I do not see why problems exist. The only difference I could find on the problematic PC was that the Bing and Google toolbars had been installed. I tried disabling them and that did not solve the problem.
    The boss in my department wants to insure everyone in our department (all 9 of us) can open the links within the PDF before we declare the document in its current PDF state complete and ready to distribute. I have been searching Google for assistance. I found out how to use the link tool to modify the links so they run JavaScript code "app.launchURL("http://www.somesite.com", true);” instead of using the open a web link command. That way a new browser window is opened with every link click rather than using an existing open window and having the user possible missing the opening of the link.  I’ve now tried both methods and am still at a loss. Both methods bring up the security window, but fail to launch the browser.
    All help is greatly appreciated.
    Mike

    There are a few possibilities. First try removing the toolbars rather than disabling them. See if there is any security configuration in IE and Reader that is stopping the weblink from opening. It is possible that the issue is with a security setting within IE that is causing the problem. To check this out see what happens if you view the pdf from within Firefox.

  • PDF Attachment preview problem

    Hello,
    Can some one advise me why would there be a problem in viewing pdf attachment properly.The problem is when I try to open a PO attachment that is sent via SAP or preview it in SAP itself, the content seems to vanish when scrolling up and down the document.The print program has been used before for a diiferent output type and it worked good and still is working very well.Thanks.
    Regards,
    Pinky

    There are two reasons I can think of off hand that would cause a problem.
    1) Email is a method of sending ascii information through the internet.
    Since attached files are not necessarily ascii, different methods of
    encoding the attachment and converting it to ascii have been developed.
    Both the receiving and sending email programs, must understand the
    method of encoding used. If not you are out of luck.
    2) If the people are trying to read their mail at work, their employer
    might have a policy of either not allowing attachments. They can either
    reject all mail with attachments or they can strip the attachments from
    the email.

  • Opening Photoshop PDF in Illustrator problem

    Hi,
    I've got a problem with opening pdf file from photoshop in illustrator. I've got a psd file with a rasterized background (photo) and about 100 shape layers over it. I'm trying to save it as a photoshop pdf to keep the vector elements unflattened for use in illustrator. The saved pdf is about three times larger than the original psd file. Then I'm trying to open the pdf in illustrator but I get a message that illustrator can't preview it. It only shows the outline of the shapes. Do you know how can I save this pdf to be able to work on it in illustrator? or maybe some trick to copy all of the shapes at once from photoshop to illustrator with correct placement? Thank you in advance:)
    Mark

    Thanks a lot for your help guys. The option with opening psd file in illustrator works best:)
    I've tried opening pdf before but it seems to work fine when there are just a few simple shapes.
    @Mylenium: I didn't have different blending modes, only normal. One rasterized layer as background and about 100 shapes layers above. Most of them being text layers converted to shapes. Nothing too fancy:)
    I've also thought that different opacities might be the problem but I've saved one pdf with different opacities and the other one with every layer at 100% opacity and both pdf files had exactly the same size and both couldn't be opened.
    Thanks again and have a nice day,
    Mark

  • TCS2/RH 8 HTML PDF List Indent Problems

    Hi,
    We are in the process of converting a; number of projects from RH X5 HTML to RH 8 HTML (installed as p/o TCS2). We use Windows XP and Word 2002. Things have gone 'reasonably' well, but we are having problems getting to the desired point with PDFs.
    With RHX5, we use custom CSSs and a custom *.dot file. It works exactly as expected, controlling indents, bullets, and numbers properly.
    For theRH8 conversion, we modified the CSSs, using 4 RH 8 multilevel lists to define a number list and 3 levels of bullet lists. The CSS styles are mapped to the equivalent styles in the original *.dot file, which we did not modify at all. The CSSs and *.dot are stored at the root level of the project directory.
    When we generate PDFs:
    We receive a number of error messages saying that Word cannot save normal.dot b/c it is open somewhere else.
    Bullet lists are not indented, all levels of bullet lists are aligned to the left margin.
    In the generated Word document, the bulleted list items are in the Normal paragraph style, but bullets are included. They should be in ListBullet1, etc. It appears they were changed to Normal and inline formatting was applied.
    In the Word file, under Tools -> Templates and Add-ins, under Document template, our *.dot, with the expected path, is listed as the template. Under Global templates and add-ins, PDFMCustom.dot is listed. We don't know where that came from, and if we delete it it comes right back when we generate.
    Do you have any ideas about why the CSS + *.dot method is not working as expected?
    We have the same problem using other configurations for PDF outputs, such as using project styles, and using the RH style mapping dot file.
    Thanks,
    Mike

    Peter,
    Thanks for your response. I did some additional research and testing, and I don't see an answer to the issue that doesn't involve inline formatting. I didn't test that, because inline formatting is not acceptable to our team - we need the consistency of defined styles.
    There is a terminology error in my original post:
    "For theRH8 conversion, we modified the CSSs, using 4 RH 8 multilevel lists to define a number list and 3 levels of bullet lists. "
    We are not using multilevel lists, we are using paragraph styles with bullet or number formatting included.
    The print wizard seems to allow mapping the paragraph-based list styles:
    However, in the Word doc that is generated as part of the PDF process, the associated paragraphs are styled 'Normal" instead of the the selected list styles.
    Below is a CSS snippet of two list styles and their associated rh-list statements.
    Thanks for any suggestions.
    Mike
    p.ListBullet {
    font-size: small;
    list-style: rh-list;
    x-list-class: rl-P-ListBullet;
    /* x-list-level: 1; */
    font-family: Arial;
    text-indent: -25pt;
    margin-left: 30pt;
    background-color: Transparent;
    P.ListBullet2 {
    font-size: small;
    text-indent: -12pt;
    margin-left: 48pt;
    font-family: Arial;
    list-style: rh-list;
    x-list-class: rl-P-ListBullet2;
    x-list-level: 1;
    rh-list.rl-P-ListBullet {
    x-level-count: 1;
    x-lvl-1-format: "<x>";
    x-lvl-1-type: disc;
    rh-list.rl-P-ListBullet2 {
    x-level-count: 1;
    x-lvl-1-format: "<x>.";
