Pdf crashes Indesign

Each time I do export to book in pdf it crashes. Need help.

To start with, what version of InDesign? What computer platform?
Can you successfully export the individual chapter files to PDF? There may be just one InDesign file which contains a corrupted object causing the crash. You could select only the first half of the book files and try exporting. Then try the last half, and do the same. If only one half crashes, and the other half does not, you'll have to narrow it down to an individual file.

  • Placed PDF crashing InDesign (CS4)?

    I extracted and cropped a photo from a pdf and saved to a new pdf file. Then I placed it in my Indesign layout. Since then, several things keep happening -- the progress wheel starts spinning (forever) so I have to force quit, part of my toolbar disappears, or a dialog box appears notifying me that it has crashed.
    These things happen when I try to resize the photo, or when I try to change the layer order, or for no apparent reason at all!
    Is there any conflict with PDFs I should know about? Or any restrictions on use? Wouldn't just telling me be easier if there is? I don't know the original provenance of the PDF.
    Should I save the PDF first in Photoshop?

    Hi Peter, I'm back!
    I went to the Apple Store and got my machine checked.
    I worked on the document for about 15 seconds before it crashed. They "Reset
    the Home Folder Permissions", check the memory, tested the RAM -- all O.K.
    Then we created a new User Account. I created a new Adobe InDesign document
    and worked in it for awhile and it didn't crash. So that said to my "Genius"
    that the problem was with Adobe InDesign and I would likely have to
    uninstall and reinstall the program.
    When I got back home, I opened the file that had been crashing -- this time
    in the new User Account and worked on it and it did NOT crash. I could make
    it through this project working in the new directory. But I decided to call
    Adobe Tech Support again and see what they said.
    They said I might have to reinstall the program, but first there was
    something else we could try that would avoid all that time and trouble.
    So we threw the Adobe InDesign Preferences folder in the trash. We also
    threw a folder called "Adobe Indesign 6.0" out.
    Then I opened up the document and worked and it didn't crash. Only there
    is still one problem:  several palettes do not display -- they are empty and
    I can't add anything to them (such as a new Swatch). They are:
    Palettes:
    Glyph sets
    Character
    Swatches
    Object Styles
    I'm not sure why these are missing and it's tricky trying to work without
    them.
    I went back to the new User Account and checked and these palettes are NOT
    missing.
    We tried copying the plist from the new User Account Preferences and pasting
    it into the preferences for my old account, but that didn't work.
    Any idea how to get my palettes back?
    I'm spending so much time trying to get up and running that I'm running out
    of time on this project, so if there's an easy answer that doesn't require a
    total reinstall, I'd be grateful to hear it.
    Many thanks,
    beth

  • Printing to PDF Crashes InDesign, Word, Publisher and more

    Hello,
    It was recommended by someone in the InDesign forums that I post my issue here, as my problem seems to be spanning through all programs that are capable of printing to PDF.
    I am running Windows 7 64 bit. I have 8gb of DDR2 ram in my machine at work. We are running Creative Suite 4.
    I am a prepress designer, so much of my day is spent taking customers files, and converting them into printable PDF files for our machines. My problem is that throughout the day, printing to a PDF will completely freeze my computer. In InDesign, when printing to a PDF file, I will get the progress bar that says, "downloading font, flattening image, etc." Usually, when the progress bar gets to "Downloading Procset," a window comes up that allows me to choose a name and location to print my PDF to. Occasinally, InDesign will completely freeze up at this point, with no option to save. The only thing I can do at this point it end the program through the task manager. When this happens, it also affects Word, Publisher, etc. I can get all the way to the print dialog box, but as soon as I click on Properties, the entire thing freezes up. Sometimes this issue starts from InDesign as described, and sometimes it originates in Word, Publisher, etc.
    Even after closing and reopening the programs, I cannot print to a PDF. My only solution is to completely restart my computer. I have been doing this 4-8 times a day for 2-3 months now.
    I did some digging, and found that once the PDF printing fails, it puts a document in my PDF printer queue called "Local Downlevel Document." It shows the status of this file as Spooling, and I am not able to delete or cancel the job. It's properties show as 0 byes, 0 pages, datatype raw, and processor Winprint.
    I've gotten suggestions to Export to PDF or print to postscript and distill. While these fixes work after the PDF printing fail, it still does not return functionality to any of my other programs that require PDF printing.
    Another issue that arises when this happens, is that I cannot print any PDF file to any physical printer. When I open a PDF file, and click print, it instantly freezes. This, as well, is fixed by restarting.
    There is no pattern to when this happens. It seems to be completely at random.
    Any help is much appreciated.
    Thank you in advance!

    This is a user to user forum, not Adobe support
    That means that the only way someone is going to be able to help is if they have experience with your software and how Acrobat intereacts
    I can't help, but hopefully someone will come along and read your message who is able to help
    I do not see that you posted your exact version and update level for Acrobat
    Since Win7 64bit is still fairly new, you MAY have a problem of not having the latest Acrobat update... and you may also have something like an out of date video driver

  • Making pdfs crashing indesign 6

    When I make pdfs in ID6 it crashes IDesign.

    Nobody can know. You are not providing system info and other details like what Export settings you use for the PDFs. In any case, ask in the ID forum and provide more information - a lot more.

  • Indesign CS4 Export PDF Crash/Quits

    Hi all,
    I am part of a small company, we recently bought CS3 Design Standard for 3 new G5 Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 Ghz iMacs, all have 2GB 800MHz DDR2 SDRAM memory, but sadly Illustrator and Indesign just kept quitting, so we were forced to updrade to CS4, a cost we could have done with out, but the problem persists. We Then upgraded our Suitcase to Fusion 2, as Fusion 1's auto activate doesnt work with CS4.
    Every time we try to export artwork from Indesign to a pdf format Indesign either hangs or just quits, i have had this happen well over 20 times in 1 day, we really like the style of Indesign CS4 and hope someone, anyone, can help us out.
    On a different note, none of the computers can access the Adobe website, the firewalls and routers/modem dont have any sites blocked yet www.adobe.com is the only one we can not access, any ideas??
    Thanks for your time.

  • Acrobat (10.1.3) crashes when exporting a pdf from InDesign (7.5.2)

    So every once and a while I export a file to pdf from InDesign and Acrobat crashes.  Sometimes it doesn't crash until I reduce file size.  It always happens when it is actually saving the file.  Usually I am overwriting a file with a newer version but not always and either way I get a crash.  I copied my crash report below.  Please help.  This reduces my productivity greatly.
    http://pastebin.com/DNpKCNXA

    I'm going to leave this open here in case anyone has some ideas, but since this is an Acrobat crash (it looks like it might have something to do with security), you should cross post in the Acrobat forum.

  • [CS3 JS] event crashes InDesign

    Scripting ladies and gentlemen,
    I'm working on this event script that searches for linked PDF files and
    lets the user copy/relink them. Using the afterOpen eventListener however
    crashes InDesign no matter what I do. This is also the case with
    beforeClose. It appears that my function cnvrtPDFlnk is causing the crash
    (I'm able to alert succesfully with the afterOpen event if I //-comment
    the cnvrtPDFLnk(myDocument)).
    Do one of you scripting gurues have a tip?

    Best regards,
    Rasmus

    Hi Rasmus,
    Here is an example of scripted plug-in — very simple yet useful for me.
    Its goal is to check color settings in InDesign and Photoshop after a document opens. We use two profiles at work: one for the main part of our magazine and another profile for its cover and the inset for another magazine. Sometimes, although rarely, we forget to switch on the correct setting.
    That's where the plug-in comes to the aid. After a document opens it checks if the file name contains certain characters – e.g. if file name starts with "Obl_" that means that this is a cover and the script checks the color settings, if they are not correct it gives warning.
    Here is short description of how to do it:
    Create a new scripted plug-in project from APIDTemplate.indd file.
    Open APID panel
    Enter 'docLoaded' into Event Filter field and press Enter
    Here is the script that does the job (the script file is generated in the same folder as indd-file):
    if (theItem.eventCode == "docLoaded") {
       var gKasmyDoc = app.activeDocument;
       var gKasDocumentName = app.activeDocument.name;
       KasCheckProfile();
       KasinfoFromPS();
    function KasCheckProfile(){
       var myIssueNumber = parseInt(gKasDocumentName.substr(2, 3));
       if (gKasDocumentName.substr(0, 2) == "Q_" && myIssueNumber >= 730 && myIssueNumber <= 999 && gKasDocumentName.match("_Vshivka") == null){
          if (app.colorSettings.workingSpaceCMYK != "ISO Web Coated"){
             alert("Внимание! Для газеты должен использоваться провиль \"ISO Web Coated\", а установлен. — " + app.colorSettings.workingSpaceCMYK);
       if (gKasDocumentName.substr(0, 2) == "Q_" && myIssueNumber >= 730 && myIssueNumber <= 999 && gKasDocumentName.match("_Vshivka") != null){
          if (app.colorSettings.workingSpaceCMYK != "ImationMatchprn175lpi_avr.icc          "){
             alert("Внимание! Для вшивки должен использоваться провиль \"ImationMatchprn175lpi_avr.icc\", а установлен. — " + app.colorSettings.workingSpaceCMYK);
       else if (gKasDocumentName.substr(0, 4) == "Obl_"){
          if (app.colorSettings.workingSpaceCMYK != "ImationMatchprn175lpi_avr.icc          "){
    //         alert("Внимание! Для обложки должен использоваться провиль \"ImationMatchprn175lpi_avr.icc\", а установлен. — " + app.colorSettings.workingSpaceCMYK);
             if (confirm("Внимание! Для обложки должен использоваться провиль \"ImationMatchprn175lpi_avr.icc\", а установлен. — " + app.colorSettings.workingSpaceCMYK)) {
                app.colorSettings.cmsSettings = "Listovaya Mashina";
    function KasinfoFromPS() {
       var bt = new BridgeTalk;
       bt.target = "photoshop";
       bt.body = "app.colorSettings;"
       bt.onResult = function(resObj) {
          var myResult = resObj.body;
          KascheckPsColorSettings(myResult);
       bt.send();
    function KascheckPsColorSettings(myColorSettings){
       var myIssueNumber = parseInt(gKasDocumentName.substr(2, 3));
       if (gKasDocumentName.substr(0, 2) == "Q_" && myIssueNumber >= 730 && myIssueNumber <= 999 && gKasDocumentName.match("_Vshivka") == null){
          if (myColorSettings != "ISO Web Coated"){
             alert("Внимание в Photoshop! Для газеты должен использоваться провиль \"ISO Web Coated\", а установлен. — \"" + myColorSettings + "\"");
       if (gKasDocumentName.substr(0, 2) == "Q_" && myIssueNumber >= 730 && myIssueNumber <= 999 && gKasDocumentName.match("_Vshivka") != null){
          if (myColorSettings != "Listovaya Mashina"){
             alert("Внимание в Photoshop! Для вшивки должен использоваться провиль \"ImationMatchprn175lpi_avr.icc\", а установлен. — \"" + myColorSettings + "\"");
       else if (gKasDocumentName.substr(0, 4) == "Obl_"){
          if (myColorSettings != "Listovaya Mashina"){
             alert("Внимание в Photoshop! Для обложки должен использоваться провиль \"ImationMatchprn175lpi_avr.icc\", а установлен. — \"" + myColorSettings + "\"");
    You can put your own stuff into the script:
    if (theItem.eventCode == "docLoaded") {
    // do your stuff here
    And finally generate the plug-in.

    Have a look at this generic document to help you troubleshoot: http://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/kb/troubleshoot-printing-pdf-export-indesign.html
    Could you also provide details about what you've tried, and what errors you encountered? Is this problem limited to a particular document, or all documents?

  • PDFs Crashing Acrobat 9.3.4 for seemingly no reason

    We're having a big problem with commented PDFs (made in Indesign) crashing at seemingly random points. Have tried re-saving the PDFs, opening in different locations (both local and network drives), changing view options, etc...
    The crashes occur on on both our MacMinis and iMacs, sometimes at the same point in a PDF, sometimes not.
    I have saved several of the crash logs, if they're of any help.
    OS X 10.6.4, Acrobat 9.3.4.
    EDIT: I need to do some more testing, but our problem sounds an awful lot like the one reported in http://forums.adobe.com/message/2951011 . I've only recently started using Two-Up view and the crashes only started after that. Unfortantely, using Single Page view is not much of a solution. Laying out double pages is much easier when both pages can be seen at the same time!

    Another thread that looks very similar:
    http://forums.adobe.com/thread/719838
    This bug definitely seems to be linked to using Two-Up page view and having multiple comments on a PDF.
    It was suggested that the problem might lie with the fact that the PDFs we're working with were created in Indesign CS3, but we've now replicated the problem with PDFs from Indesign CS5.

  • CS2 Javascript crashing InDesign works as 2 parts and in CS3.

    I have a script which works fine in CS3 but when I set it up in CS2 I found it was crashing InDesign. I've tried to cut it down to the minimum and set the 2 parts as functions.
    The first function makeMyslug create a new layer called slug and then some text frames on all master pages, with details about the document. The second function printMyslug prints all pages to postscript and adds a page number to the postscript file.
    If I have a document open and run each of the functions separately all is well. If I try and run both function in one go InDesign crashes. The script seems to crash InDesign once the printing process begins.
    NOTE for this example to work you will need to have a document open and make sure there are no blank pages. I'll post in as a reply so that it can be copied if anyone is able to help me out.
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

  • CS3:  Export PDF crash...located the source, now what?

    InDesign CS3 keeps crashing on page 86 or 87 of a file I'm trying to Export to PDF.  I know this from watching the progress bar move across the screen, everything is fine until the status box shows page 86/87, then poof, InDesign disappears and requests to send an error report.  I was under the impression this was being caused by the Export PDF settings.  With printer's marks enabled, the Export PDF crash occurs on page 86.  Turn printer's marks off and the crash happens on page 87.  So I tried all kinds of things with Export PDF settings but came up empty.
    Then I messed around with pages 86 and 87.  Removed text frames from page 86 and tried various combinations with Export PDF.  Did the same thing on page 87, and then combinations of 86 and 87 at the same time.  No good...keeps crashing.  I removed ALL content from pages 86 and 87 and the Export PDF still crashes, even with blank pages.
    I finally got a clue when moving text frames to other pages.  Both pages have 4 text frames each.  When I moved the top text frame on page 87 to a different page -- in this case I moved it to page 98 -- the Export PDF crashed on page 96.  Not page 98 where it was located, but page 96. Weird, but it gave me a clue.
    Long story short:
    Export PDF causes InDesign to crash on page 86 or 87 unless the uppermost text frame on page 87 is moved to a non-printing layer. The text frame can remain on page 87 or be on the pasteboard; either way, it must be non-printing to prevent a crash in Export PDF mode.
    Any suggestions?  I've already searched the text frame and nothing out of the ordinary catches my eye.  The text frame is necessary for a book project.  I can't consolidate it with another frame.
    Thanks in advance!

    My memory is not so great after all...
    The bug was in CS4 and it was fixed in 6.0.4. I remembered the rest correctly...

  • Place pdf into InDesign CS4 js

    Hi, I have those lines of script that place the pdf into InDesign, but in the process new frame gets created in which the pdf is placed, and I need it to be placed into my existing frame. How could I do it:
        var myRectangle = myDoc.pages[0].rectangles[0];
        myPage = myDoc.pages[0];
        myPDFPage = myPage.place(File(myFile), [0,0])[0];
    Thank you very much for your help.
    Yulia

    Yes, you are right, I am stuck for a different reason, it does places the second page.
    What I think is going on,  and maybe there is a better approach to it than the one I am going about it: when I have single page pdf for the 1st page and single page pdf for the 2nd page, my script first tries to upload 1st pdf as multi-page just in case there is only one pdf with both files. And for some reason it uploads single page pdf twice (into the second InDesign page as well when there is no second page in the 1st pdf [If I could avoid that all together would be great]). So my script verifies if the pdf uploaded into the 2nd page is 1st page of 1st pdf then it deletes it. And then it looks if there is a file for the second page, and uploads it. So my new challenge is that when it verifies what page of the pdf is uploaded into the 2nd page of InDesign after the 1st pdf upload, it just crashes, and it worked with the previous way of placing pdfs (the green line of the script).
    The second my issue is that, as it places the files, it dis-attaches the frames from the master page, and I need them to be still half attached. For the same reason new frames created by place command - is a problem for me. Maybe easier way, if it's possible at all, half-attach those new frames to the Master page afterwords. (This is the main goal for me).
    Here are both functions: to upload first pdf and second pdf:
    function myPlacePDF(myDoc, myFile){
        app.pdfPlacePreferences.pdfCrop = PDFCrop.cropMedia;
        // page 1
        myPage = myDoc.pages[0];
        var myRectangle = myDoc.pages[0].rectangles[0];
        app.pdfPlacePreferences.pageNumber = 1;
        myRectangle.place(myFile);
        //PDF.place (myFile);
        //myPDFPage = myPage.place(File(myFile), [0,0])[0];
        myRectangle.geometricBounds = [0, 0, myGB_Y2, myGB_X2];
        // page 2
        myPage = myDoc.pages[1];
        var myRectangle = myDoc.pages[1].rectangles[0];
        app.pdfPlacePreferences.pageNumber = 2;
        myPDFPage = myRectangle.place(myFile);
        //PDF.place (myFile);
        //myPDFPage = myPage.place(File(myFile), [0,0])[0];
        myRectangle.geometricBounds = [0, 0, myGB_Y2, myGB_X2];
        if (myPDFPage.pdfAttributes.pageNumber != 2){
            myPDFPage.parent.remove();
        try{
            var myFrame = myDoc.pages[0].rectangles[1];
            if (myFrame.isValid == true){
                myFrame.remove();
        catch (e){}
        try{
            var myFrame = myDoc.pages[1].rectangles[1];
            if (myFrame.isValid == true){
                myFrame.remove();
        catch (e){}
        app.pdfPlacePreferences.pageNumber = 1;
    function myPlacePDFback(myDoc, myFile){
        var myFrame= myDoc.pages[1].rectangles.[0];
        if (myFrame.isValid == false){
            myDoc.pages[1].rectangles.add();
            myFrame.strokeWeight = 0;
            myFrame.geometricBounds = [0, 0, myGB_Y2, myGB_X2];
        app.pdfPlacePreferences.pdfCrop = PDFCrop.cropMedia;
        myPage = myDoc.pages[1];
        var myRectangle = myDoc.pages[1].rectangles[0];
        app.pdfPlacePreferences.pageNumber = 2;
        myRectangle.place(myFile);
        //myPDFPage = myPage.place(File(myFile), [0,0])[0];
        app.pdfPlacePreferences.pageNumber = 1;
    Kasyan, your script might be helpful, and I would like to look into it.
    Thank you very much for your help.

  • Export an InDesign file to PDF and InDesign freezes and quits

    I keep trying to export an InDesign file to PDF and InDesign keeps freezing up and quitting. This is the first time it's done this, I have never had a problem before.I recently added Suitcase Fusion to my computer and wondered if this was the cause, or if there is something else wrong.

    Try disabling the suitcase plugin and see if it continues (you'd probably have other problems, too, though, if it's the culprit). Often it's a bit of bad text or an image. See Adobe Community: File Crashing on Output - printing/PDF/other for lots of troubleshooting tips.

  • I need to create a PDF from InDesign that people can edit in Reader or Acrobat

    I need to create a PDF from InDesign that people can edit (for example, change a name from "John" to "Johnny") from either Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat. I have already looked at forms, but they do not keep your font colors, faces, and sizes and just make everything that is selected as a text form Black, 12pt, Times New Roman.
    Can anyone here help me?

    Vincent,
    If you use Acrobat pro, generate your .pdf file and then save it as (french version):
    ... so that anyone using Acrobat Reader (or Pro, of course) can modify the .pdf file (with limitations), add comments, ...
    If you want to try to "protect" your .pdf file, you can try with this (in the "Préférences" menu (french version)):

  • How do I export to PDF in InDesign without the hidden layers

    Hi there
    This is probably a simple solution but I am trying to export a document to PDF in InDesign without the hidden layers.
    i.e - I have created a document that includes images etc from an existing PDF.
    When I open the new PDF and use the 'find' tool, Pro is highlighting words on the hidden (original pdf).
    I have tried exporting only the visible layers but is there a setting in InDesign that I can use to export only the visible content to pdf?
    Thanks in advance.

    Even if you mask off part of a PDF, or place a white rectange on top of it, the text will still be selectable. Other than with raster images, InDesign is not smart enough to clip off parts of a PDF (or rather, it's smart enough to leave them as they are). PDFs can contain incredibly complex objects, and any clipping routine would probably make as many mistakes as it solves problems.
    Introduce a small Transparency to this image or one on top of it, then export with Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3) settings. Since that old version does not support native transparency, ID is forced to redraw the image, and then it will clip off excess data.
