PDF created in MS Word does not print special characters correctly

I am having a problem with converting an MS Word document to a PDF. This document contains the Ohm symbol and the greater than or equal to symbol. I am using Word 2007 and Acrobat X Pro.
I am simply using the insert symbol feature in Word to insert the symbols. They appear fine in Word. When I print to PDF the Ohm symbol turns into an '&' and the greater than or equal to symbol turns into an 'e'.
A fellow I work with who has the exact same computer and program setup as me does not have this issue.
What can I do to correct this?
Thanks!
Chris

I tried all of the print/press options and they all do the same thing.
I have always used the pdf maker button from the MS Word ribbon.
I just tried using the print dialog and selected Adobe PDF with the 'high quality print' option that I need to use and this time it worked! But it is not really fixed as I make a lot of PDFs every day and need the one-click functionality.
In the PDFs that work and PDFs where the character fails I tried editing the text and it says that the font is substituted. In MS Word i am using Arial, Acrobat is using some "ArialMT" font that I never heard of.
The embeded fonts are also listed as ArialMT.

FormCentral PDF export: Drop-Down Menu does not print when no choice is made
I want to be able to print a blank form for the older clients who cannot use a computer. Form has a few drop-down menus and they only appear on the print out if an option is selected. The form was created on FormCentral. Can anybody help?
Sorry if i'm a noob, not much experience in creating PDF forms yet.
    Thanks for your help,
    Yon

    Hi Perry
I am using the trial version of Adobe Acrobat and am using the provided FormCentral software to create the form. I find it very limited, but easier to learn. I am creating a financial needs analyser.
The section of the drop down menu is a selection from 1-5 (rating of importance for financial goals). I want to print out the questions and the empty boxes for people to fill them in by hand (e.g write 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5). When I leave a blank choice, no box is printed out. I write the questions in formatted text and leave the text/caption for the drop-down as blank, as it is difficult to set the margins correctly so various elements align (I pretty much have to estimate).
As said before, I may have been missing a massive part of the software, but I haven't used any training - just going by instinct so far.
Do you know if I can do anything about it?
    Thanks,
    Yon

This can be the result of selecting the wrong driver. An older, unsupported laser printer will sometimes work with the generic Postscript driver.

  • Printing a PDF in Adobe Reader  v8 does not print watermark

In our office we have PDFs created with Adobe Acrobat Professional version 7 that have a lighten watermark which say "confidential". These PDF documents print fine with Adobe Reader 7.0.8. Our office has now converted to Adobe Reader 8.1.1. When you open the PDF in Adobe Reader v8.1.1 the watermark displays on the screen but when you print the document the document prints without the watermark.
I have checked the knowledge base and can't find this issue. The document has no trouble printing, it just doesn't display the watermark. I have tested Adobe Reader versions 8.0, 8.1.1 and the new version 8.1.2 all display the watermark when you open the Reader, but none of them print the watermark. I have gone back and verify and the watermark does print on Adobe Reader v7.0.8.
If anyone has a similar issue or solution please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Mary Mendoza

I have the same problem. The watermark does not print out even though I can see it in the print preview. Anybody...?

  • DrawString method does not understand special characters

    Hi!
I would like to send a String to a printer. I have tried the drawString method but my problem is, that it does not understand special charaters. The newline character is not a problem as I can just use the split method and then print the resulting array of strings.
The big problem is the tab character (\t). Is there any way to make drawString understand this character? Or is there a more simple way to print the text?
    Kind Regards,
    Mikkel

Thanks for your replies. I have to admit that the problem was a completely different one, a really stupid one!
The output from the print method looked horrible to say the least (it is basically an array of numbers separated by equals amounts of space). The problem was that the font was not set to be monospaced (!) so you can imagine how the output looked ;)...
Anyway, thanks for your fast replies. I will look into that class you told about.

  • ZHANWIN device type does not print Korean characters

    Hi All,
We are trying to print smart forms containing Chinese,Taiwanese and Korean characters from our ECC 6.0
As per SAP Note 1038413 - Unicode SAPWIN device type for CJK fon, we used the device type ZHANWIN to print smart forms for these characters.
But with this device type we are unable to print smart forms with Korean characters. But as per the note, it has to support Korean characters too.
    Please help with this issue.
    Thanks and Regards,
    Subashree

    Hi Subashree,
it is likely that the problem with ZHANWIN is related to the font used in the form. if you want to print Korean characters via ZHANWIN, you need to specify a Korean font like KPBATANG for the Korean characters in the form. Then this will be mapped to a suitable windows font in windows. If you chosse e.g font COURIER , it is mapped to windosw font Courier New which does nto contain the Korean characters.
For SWINCF or SWINCFCK the font in SAP is not so impertant. The mapping of the characters in windows is based on the Unicode character range. So as Nils said, SWINCFCK should work regardless of the font in the SAP form.

    Aidan

  • Grid does not display special characters (as square boxes)

    SQLD 1.5.1 (54.40):
We found out, special characters like newline will not shown in data grid in any way. But we need to know, if there are such characters. If there any way to get these characters visible?
    Pls try following case
    create table mytab (mycol varchar2(20));
    insert into mytab(mycol) values('Test'||char(13));
    commit;
    select * from mytab;
You will not see the appended newline character within the grid, while toad is doing .

You're right that whitespace doesn't show as squares anymore (I think they did in the past), but everything else seems OK.
Why don't you try something like this and prove for yourself:
    select '

  • Textnode: does not show special charaters correctly

To use special characters in Shake 4.1 u have to use hex-codes. This works with the font Utopia.
If I need a "ä" (auml) I need type in the following: \xE4 which gives me the correct sign - in Utopia! If I change the font to Verdana, 0/00 (permille ?).
I could not find a working hex-code table. Any idea?

    Hi,
can you please provide information which SW version you are using, and also the product code of the phones you are using (product code can be found from phones type label sticker under that battery, it's "Code: xxxxxxx"). With these information R&D is able to test the problem efficiently.

I don't believe it's a font issue, as those characters display fine in a text editor using Terminus.

Read over it ten times. The only thing that looks remotely helpful is the section on "My terminal doesn't support UTF-8" ... it then tells me to use rxvt-unicode, which I am using. Feel free to point out something that may be obvious to you. I'm pretty oblivious at times.

  • ITunes does not display Cyrillic characters correctly in Windows 7 Starter

I try to copy my songs from iTunes (9.0 running Mac OS X 10.6 Russian interface language) with tags containing Cyrillic characters (song name, artist, etc.) into iTunes 9.1 (russian interface) on netbook running Windows 7 Starter English. I do it via Home sharing option in iTunes.
Some songs with Russian titles displayed OK, but some of them display wrong characters (see attached screenshot).

  • EMAIL FORMAT DOES NOT PRINT ALL OF MESSAGE

When I print usinfg the Firefox system the printe material does not include the entire sentence on the same line as in the email and thuis does not print out a correct message. If I use another saystem such as Internet Explorer it works fine. Also, when I 'open up' the computer in the AM to do my work all is OK, however, if I terminate the session and do not log out of Firefox, and later try to open another page I get a message that 'Firefox is already running ' and I do not show that I have any Firefox program open.

It may not state it on that page specifically, but one of the 5530's selling points is the double sided printing:  http://www.shopping.hp.com/en_US/home-office/-/products/Printers/HP-ENVY/A9J40A?HP-ENVY-5530-e-All-i...
Just look under features on your own store and you'll see that.  Of course it's not listed under the specifications of the printer as that entire page doesn't mention the printer's features.
I'm having this same issue.  Have been for months.  The 5530 just will not finish multiple pages.  I've yet to hear any agent acknowledge that it's actually a problem and there are tons of forum posts about it!
The only solution, DaveWahid, seems to be to call HP and talk to someone directly.  It seems like they're able to perform some magic over the phone that nobody I've talked to on the forums really knows what they did, which makes it impossible for the users who would rather just fix the issue themselves should it happen again in the future (like perhaps after the warranty runs out).

Sounds like the table is to large to fit on a single page. Have you tried using the "Shrink to Page" option in the Print Preview? Depending on your version of Word, my attached picture may not be 100% similar but it should be enough to give you an idea. Here is the option inside the print preview menu:
