PDF created with ID CS5.5 won't open in Acrobat 9

I have a PDF that was created in InDesign CS 5.5 — using the same standard export profiles we use for hundreds of other files — that appears to have no issues opening in Acrobat X Pro, but which will not open correctly in Acrobat 9 Pro. (Mac & Windows versions)
File created on a Mac with CS 5.5, exported with a standard export preset conforming to the PDF/X-4 standard (compatible with Acrobat 7).
PDF opens and displays as it should in Acrobat X. PDF sent to a color proofer running GMG ColorProof 5 RIP also processes normally.
But when trying to open the same PDF file in Acrobat 9 — either Windows or Macintosh — we get the error:
"An error exists on this page. Acrobat may not display the page correctly. Please contact the person who created the PDF document to correct the problem."
Half the type and much of the art (simple bitmap polygons) does not display, as if it were missing. (The file does open, it just opens incorrectly.)
I believe it's unrelated, but maybe worth mentioning that this PDF reported a "Character references .notdef glyph" error, which we occasionally get on some files. This does not create issues on press (it hasn't yet), but it technically outside the PDF/X-4 spec, so it gets flagged. Deleting the type referenced by the error removes the warning, but does not correct this issue, where the page doesn't display.
I've looked through the document properties and run several preflight checks to look for aberrations in the file, anything that's out of spec, and I can't find anything.
Again, there's nothing in this file that isn't in literally hundreds of other files, so I'm at a loss as to what's creating this issue.

an update
after going through the layout in question piece by piece, removing then adding back in each individual item one at a time until the error occurred, I discovered two artifacts in the layout that were the cause. Don't ask me what they were, but removing them solved the issue.
They weren't visible, as they weren't even points, really — as if they were two points of an incompletely deleted object.
My first guess was a corrupted frame, as I've seen that happen a number of times, even going back to Quark 3, where an individual object, or the art placed in it, munges the postscript somehow and then the resulting document. That's why I usually start removing items on the page until the problem goes away, to find the culprit. In this case, they were hard to find as they were single points behind other objects (and were getting selected inadvertently with them).
Anyway, not sure what that was, but it solved my issue.

  • Hyperlinks to PDF files with Excel XP will not open on Acrobat

    Hi all;
I am having an issue with Acrobat Reader X.
I am using Windows 7 x64 Pro, with Acrobat Reader X, and MS Office XP and try as I might, I cannot create an Hyperlink to a PDF document.  Excel says that "there is no program registered to open this file" and I have done pretty much everything I've seen on the net, including removing / reinstalling both programs, making sure it is registered in Regedit as the program to open this kind of files, repairing both programs through the control panel, I have also followed Microsoft advice on how to unregister/register a program to no avail, and a few others I cannot remember right now.  I have recreated the same environnement in another computer, and it runs fine.
Does anyone has any idea what else I could try?  Or, hopefully, an answer to the problem because you've already gotten it before and were able to fix it?
I thank you in advance for your kind help !
    Nabil,

    Hi,
This forum is for Adobe Reader on Unix platforms. It seems that you're using Windows, in which case the correct forum is at http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ee6b2e6/

  • Problems opening PDFs created with Acrobat in TFS

    Hi,
I know this might not really be a supported issue, but any thoughts you might have would be appreciated!
I've been creating PDFs using Primo PDF and a trial of Acrobat X. I then put them on TFS / MS Visual Studio 2000.
So, when I try to open a PDF I've checked in, the ones I've created in Primo are fine and launch whereas the ones created in Acrobat won't open and an error message about Inconsistent Line Endings is displayed.
    It says:
"The line endings are not consistent. Do you want to normalize them....
    Line ending: Windows (CR LF)"
The PDFs DO work when I open them from the normal place in the windows file system. However, when I try to "normalize" them by clicking yes, it breaks them completely.
Does anyone have any idea why this is happening and what I can do to fix it? I'm assuming it must be something to do with the conversion or document settings, because this only happens to PDFs created with Acrobat.

In Acrobat X, SharePoint Integration has been added which allows users to check-out/check-in the document from within Acrobat. Clicking the file from document library in Internet Explorer opens the file in Acrobat. The configuration that needs to be done on the SharePoint server is explained in the following KB article in section 11.1.

Please try these and let us know if you face any problems after this.

  • Unable to open pdf created with Acrobat Pro using Adobe Reader X

Files created with some Adobe Professional applications such as Acrobat Pro ensure the file is small by excluding font information from the file.  Simple pdf creation applications embed the font in the file, which makes for transportability between apps but does make the files big.
The problem i have experienced is that Adobe Reader X is one of the simple app varieties, so is unable to open, print, or read files created using Adobe Acrobat Pro..
i'd welcome any help in (a) finding a free app that opens these 'pro pdf' files, OR (b) an option setting in Acrobat Pro which includes the font information in the file - or both!

There are so many things wrong, around a tiny grain of truth, it really isn't worth examining. Not at this stage if you are more interested in getting things working.  It may be worth asking you though, since Reader doesn't even launch for you, how you came to focus on font embedding being the cause.
Ok, Reader doesn't launch. Suppose you start Reader FIRST. Then use File > Open on your PDF.

  • Possible to create medium res .pdf file with InDesign CS5?

    Hello,
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to create a medium res .pdf file with InDesign CS5?
I'm working with a client and have been sending him both high res and low res files of a catalog project. High res .pdf is 12.8MB and low res is 1.2MB. He is asking whether I can create something in between the two, say somewhere around 6 to 8 MB.
Any insight would be much appreciated.
    Many thanks,
    Tania

PDFs do not have a resolution. The graphics within do, however..
Look at the downsampling settings and experiment until you get what you want.

    Hi efacg,
Most printing issues are solved by resetting the Printing preferences. When you print from Firefox and you click on the down arrow, do you see Defualt and Firefox? Please make changes to the preferences here and preview the document.

  • Word 2000 hyperlinks don't work in .pdf created with Acrobat 9 Pro

I'm new to Adobe Forums, so please overlook the effrontery of my posting a query previously discussed. Perhaps someone can simply reply with a link to the prior discussion. I have installed Acrobat 9.2 Pro in 2 computers, one running XP64 Pro, the other XP32 Pro. Word 2000 is installed in both. All Word hyperlinks work fine, but after .pdf conversion using Acrobat 9.2 Pro, none of these work. In 'Preferences', I have navigated Convert to PDF > Microsoft Office Office Word > Edit Settings > Add Links to Adobe PDF File and confirmed that the Add Links feature is enabled. Having ascertained that this glitch is not specific to either XP64 or XP32 operating systems, I uninstalled Acrobat 9.2 Pro from the XP32 computer and reinstalled Acrobat 6.1 Pro. Then using the same Word 2000 document, I converted to .pdf using Acrobat 6.1 Pro, with no problems whatsoever. This looks like a serious bug in Acrobat 9 Pro, which the telephone support folks have acknowledged. Alas, they won't give me the tiniest clue how to resolve it, nor any workaround, but merely refer me to AdobeForums.com for help. I suspect a corrective patch or 'upgrade' will be forthcoming, but meanwhile, if anyone knows of a workaround, please enlighten me. Thanks. /rmbrown

Thank you, CtDave, for your speedy reply and for the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' knowledge base article. Word 2000 is one of Microsoft's masterpieces - by disabling 'autosave', the application is totally stable, does not require 'activation' by Microsoft. Acrobat 9 enables 'saving' of interactive .pdf forms, a most valuable feature and one much appreciated by anyone completiing such forms. There must be more to this issue than 'incompatibility', because I can create a test Word 2000 document, hyperlink a valid URL, convert to .pdf with Acrobat 9, and the hyperlink works fine in Acrobat 9. When I attempt to do this using a much more complex Word 2000 document, embedded with scores of hyperlinks, these links fail to work following conversion to .pdf with Acrobat 9, but work fine following conversion to .pdf with  Acrobat 6. I can then use Acrobat 9 to open the .pdf created with Acrobat 6, and successfully edit any of these fully functional hyperlinks using the 'Link tool'. I don't know who prepared the 'Acrobat Technical Evangelist' article (AF1908DCd01) - no credits were cited, and I'm far from certain that this authentically belongs to Adobe's knowledge base. So I appreciate your sharing this information with me, but I cannot say that my question has been definitively answered. If you have any further information or tips, please reply in this thread. /rmbrown

  • Photoshop CS5 won't open .kmz files

Photoshop CS5 won't open .kmz files. I did a fresh install of Google Earth, opened it, saved a place, and saved a .kmz file. It reopens fine in Google Earth.
When I try to open it in Photoshop, this message pops up:
    File Format Error
This file is from a previous version of Google Earth or it is not a Google Earth file
I get this message regardless of the following:
    - ps is closed and i right click the kmz and choose ps (rather than google earth) to open it
    - ps is open and i double click the kmz
    - ps is open and i choose file/open and select the kmz
    - ps is open and i have created and saved a new psd file, then choose 3D/New Layer from 3D File/ and select the kmz
I have tried the usual remedies, change rwx permissions, repair permissions, delete prefs. No luck.
Any thoughts? Software versions are below.
    Thanks.
    - Photoshop CS5 Extended 12.0.4 x64 (doesn't work in x32 either)
    - Google Earth 6.0.3.2197
    - OS 10.6.8

I was trying to see (since Photoshop Extended touts the ability to open kmz files) if I could open a 3D Google Earth file and edit it in Photoshop. A file like this for instance http://ecotope.org/anthromes/maps/. After more research I've learned that kmz is nothing more that a container format - you can change the extension to zip and see what's in it.
I ran across this tidbit in the Photoshop CS3 Extended forum:
Photoshop CS3 Extended supports the ability to import .kmz files created from Google Earth 4 or exported from Sketch-up in the Google Earth 4 format. Photoshop CS3 Extended cannot open Google Earth files. If you have a Google Earth file, you can convert it to a Google Earth 4 format with the free version of Sketch-up.
So, theoretically if I could get a kmz into Google Earth 4 format, I could open it in Photoshop. But I haven't had any success importing a kmz or kml into SketchUp. Even just making a native sketchup file and trying to import that in psd gives a ram error.
Probably I'm wishing for the moon.

  • Reader 11.0.07 does not display content of PDFs created with LiveCycle Designer ES 8.1

We use some PDFs created with LiveCycle Designer ES 8.1 which do not show any content when opened with Reader 11.0.07, only a blank display area or erratic copies of the screen behind it. Documents look fine in print preview though and also print correctly. Tried to change various security or display settings, no effect. Tried other machines, different hardware, different OS versions (Win7, Win8), same effect on every single device with 11.0.07 installed.
    Any ideas, anyone?!?

    Hi,
Not sure why you are resolving the node (??), also I would not be inclined to include a period in the object name (.), maybe this is why you are resolving the node.
Also I don't see in the script where you are calling the instanceManager, in order to use the addInstance method.
Having said that the problem may be in the File > Form Properties > Defaults tab:
Check that Preserve script changes is set to Automatic.
Lastly is the form Reader Enabled? It would need to be for users with Reader to save the changes, including new instances of a repeating element.

CS5 won't open NEF files from D600, despite updating camera raw plug in.  How do I fix this?

The D600 was first supported in Camera Raw 7.3 which is only compatible with CS6 and later - not CS5 unfortunately.

    Some options:
    FREE
Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all D600 Raw files to DNGs then open the DNGs in CS5

For some reason CS5 won't open with the Cont+H hot key in PSE8 but will load if using the menu drop down...any ideas how to fix this?

It's normally ctrl+E to edit in an external program; at least from Lightroom to CS5
First you must set up the external editor in preferences.

I think they must be swapping out .html for .chm in DW or something. What the OP describes sure sounds like what happens when you do that.
    @dfiore27101
DW doesn't support .chm file types. Adding the extension doesn't compress the images into the file to create a true .chm.
Adding .chm will make a perfectly good .html file stop displaying in DW though.
An easier way to send someone .html help files would be to archive their folder as a .zip then email the .zip. The recipient would then need to extract the archive to view the files in their browser.
I don't know of any way to create real .chm files in DW.

is possible in acrobat reader fill in and save interactive PDF created with LiveCycle Designer?

    Hi,
Only if the form has been Reader Enabled before it is sent out to the user with Reader.
There are two ways of Reader Enabling the form. One using Acrobat Standard v9 or Acrobat Professional v8 (both have license restrictions). The other is to use LC Reader Extensions ES2, which is a server product (additional costs).
    Some info here:
    http://www.assuredynamics.com/index.php/2010/11/using-livecycle-forms-in-acrobat-and-reade r/
A search of the forums for "Reader Extensions" or "Reader Enable" will give more information.
    Hope that helps,
