PDF "damaged or not readable"

My workstation is offline, and I need the help files for Production Premium CS5.5.
For example....the AE CS5.5 help file....I downloaded it to the iPad1, and it reads OK in iBooks.
I downloaded it to the MacBook, and it cannot be read by Preview or Adobe Reader 10.1.2 (freshly downloaded and installed).
Using Preview, the popup message reads: The file “after_effects_cs5_help.pdf” could not be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format that Preview doesn’t recognize.
Using Adobe Reader, the popup message reads:  There was an error opening this document. The file is damaged and could not be repaired.
How can I get all the Production Premium Help files downloaded in a readable format?
thanks

Given you're getting an error in both Preview and Adobe Reader, it's got to be corruption of the file during download, or on arrival on your MacBook. I can guarantee the PDF files you're trying to download are OK when they leave the Adobe server, and there's nothing special about the PDFs that would prevent them opening in Preview. What happens if you move the working copy from your iPad to your MacBook, or vice-versa?

  • Mac PDF files not readable on PC

I am constantly getting messages from my PC friends that the photoshop files I create and then convert to either pdf or jpg are not readable on their pc. Sometimes the files are split into two files (one very small and the other large) with the same name. The larger file is usually able to be opened.
What can I do to make my proofs easier to read for pc users? This has gotten frustrating.
    Thanks for your help.

The problem is that I cannot control what version of Adobe the person is using who I'm sending the file to. This has been hugely embarrassing to me as I've been sending out files with my work. Some of the recipients were kind enough to point out that the file seems corrupted, others simply put me on a "waste of time" list.
I've tried it on my windows machine, and using Acrobat Reader 8 and Acrobat professional 7.0. The text appears as little circles and the file is not readable.
On the Mac, I can reproduce the problem, too.
Adobe Illustrator (version CS) cannot read the file. Warnings are:
The font Univers-BlackExt is missing.  Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font.
The font Univers-BoldExt is missing.  Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font.
The font Univers-Condensed is missing.  Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font.
The font Univers-Extended is missing.  Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font.
The font Univers-ExtraBlackExt is missing.  Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font.
The font Univers-Oblique is missing.  Affected text will be displayed using a substitute font.
To preserve appearance, some text has been outlined.
Acrobat 6.0.2 Professional cannot read it on the Mac
Acrobat Reader 8.1.7 on Mac has no problems with it. It displays perfectly, just like under Preview.
But this is somewhat beside the point. A PDF file should be portable, so once I have one there should be a way to make sure it can be read by all Adobe products that can read PDF. How can I make sure?
Given that I can see everything perfectly on my Mac (e.g. using Reader 8.1.7), how can I ensure the same can be seen by any other user on any system reading a PDF file? I guess that this has to do with your (Adobe's) PDF specifications. How can I "enforce" those?
    Many thanks!

  • How do I view and open all my files again that are on my external hard drive?? Error message saying 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' Three options are Initialize, Ignore or Eject.

I have recently purchased Toshiba 1TB hard drive and I set it up and I was able to transfer all my files onto it such as my music, photos, documents. I had correctly ejected and used it again and all these files were safely stored and accessible afterwards. However after I rebooted my computer as it had been going slow and I had too much clogging it up once I reconnected the external hard drive I have error message saying 'The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer' Three options are Initialize, Ignore or Eject. How do I access all my files? I set it up to work on both mac and windows. I have tried both another mac and windows computer and same issue occurs?? I am worried that all my personal files are gone but am confused as the drive has had absolutely no damage to it as it was in a very short time frame and its never left the same spot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for your quick response. I had a look at your discussion... I tried it on a Windows machine and I thought that was compatible with ExFAT?
Therefore I need to attempt to use my external hard drive with a machine that boasts OS X 10.6.5 or above and then it should work?

  • External Hard Drive not Readable & Input/Output Error?

I was using my OWC 300gb external hard drive for a while and it's worked great. I had a bunch of files on it, but I recently transferred everything to another external HD I have, which worked fine, so I could erase this 300gb one. I can't remember what happened, but somehow my Macbook doesn't recognize this hard drive. I think erased everything and then unplugged it without ejecting it first. Anyways, nothing is on the the drive anymore and I get this error message:
"The disk you inserted was not readable by your computer"
This pops up when I restart my Macbook. When I try to use Disk Utility, it greys everything out on the partition and Disk Repair tabs. On the 'Erase' tab, it will allow me to select Erase, but then gives me the error:
    "Input/Output error"
Does anyone know how to get my Macbook to see my drive (so I can start to partition it)? For some reason only Disk Utility acknowledges it's there, Finder won't.
Anyone have any tips of what it is or what I can try? I did try to use my OS discs booting up holding C, but that doesn't work either.

Hi there. Everyone is saying on these forums that the hard drive is failing...suck. I went and bought a new when I got input/output error and found that the new one showed the same input output error, making it impossible to partition the disk. Then the guy in the apple service center told me the new one was bad too, after having seen the code that came up related to my new scorpio 250 GB drive. Instead of sending it back, I took it out and installed the old one..however this time with a slihtly more of pressure on the tape holding down the hard drive cable between the hard drive and the circuit board. Amazingly, this time it didn't even show any hard drive at all! Then I understood what was wrong. It was exactly what was indicated an "input/output errror"! ..the cable was broken. I bought a new cable, well the Powerbookmedic sold it as new but it was an old working one that arrived. Immediately, after change of cable the old hard drive and now also the new 250 GB works perfectly! I remember that some interesting symptoms prior to all hard drive problems appeared, such as not being able to start up properly, strange blue screens, flipping question marks etc. I remember that shaking the comp occasionally worked to get it going. No wonder, shaking occasionally made it work and i believe the damaged cable maybe changed position and started conducting. The cable is very sensitive and probably should not be taped down so hard as the first service center guy at apple had done with mine when he fixed it the comp a few years ago. Polymers/plastics bent heavily become fragile/brittle with time and are specially sensitive under pressure/bent. Note that my old damaged cable still conducted and showed the hard drives but didn't work fully. I hope this will help someone, it took me 2 month to figure out..

  • External HDD: "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer"

    Hi,
I have an external drive with important data on it (there is a backup, but there is also some non-backuped data as well...). I cannot access the external drive because I receive a "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" message connecting it. I was wondering, if you have some advice on how to get my data back?
I have a WD Elements 2 TB (about 2 months old), I am using is with an iMac, latest Snow Leopard. The drive used to work all fine. Now, I receive a "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer" every time I connect it. Same thing happens if connected to my MacBook Pro.
What happened?: I was copying files to the external drive. I the middle of it, I received a message complaining I that assumedly ejected the drive by pulling the USB cable out instead of properly ejecting it software-side (I did not do this). The drive symbol was gone. Now, I plug the drive out an reconnected it. The drive symbol showed up again. I continued copying files on the drive, but after some 30 seconds, I received the same error message again. One more time, I disconnected and reconnected the drive - this time to another USB port. The drive showed up, but I was not able to copy files on it (I am using muCommander, it just kept showing 0kb progress). I restarted the Mac. Since then I am getting the "The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer." The drive symbol does not show up anymore.
I was googling the problem: in one forum there was a suggestion to click "initialize drive" and than to "repair" in DiscUtility. I clicked initialize drive and the drive is shown in DiscUtility, but "repair" and "verify" are greyed out. I read more posts on it, one posts suggested NOT to click initialize because that means format in Mac OS language (btw: ***, why is it not called format).
That is the situation at the moment. What is the best - if there is - way to get my data back? DiscWarrior?
I very much appreciate your advice!
    Daniel

"Initializing" a drive has been normal computer terminology for decades.  "Formatting" generally referred to the high-level preparation also called "erasing."  None of this is "Mac OS language."
Disk Warrior will not likely fix the problem you have.  DW can repair a damaged directory, but your error suggests an even worse problem of directory corruption.  I suggest you try using DW if you have it.  Visit the Alsoft site to determine the limitations and usage of the version you have.  It may not be able to boot your computer depending upon what version of DW you have and how new your computer is.
If you have no success with DW then see the following:
    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.

  • Reader 11.0.10: the links pointing to other pdf-Documents do not function anymore.

I have updated Reader 11.0.09 to 11.0.10. But now the linked pdf-documents in the main-pdf-document do not open. Nothing happens until I disable the "Sandbox-protection" (potected mode enabled by start). Under 11.0.09 this was not neccessary! Is there a bug in 11.0.10?

    Hi grissler,
Are the linked pdf documents weblinks?
PDFs have evolved from static pages to complex documents with features such as interactive forms, multimedia content, scripting, and other capabilities. These features leave PDFs vulnerable to malicious scripts or actions that can damage your computer or steal data. Enhanced security lets you protect your computer against these threats by blocking or selectively permitting actions for trusted locations and files.
When enhanced security is enabled and a PDF tries to complete a restricted action from an untrusted location or file, a security warning appears. The type of warning depends on the action and your version of Acrobat or Reader.
If yes then you need to add it to the trusted list. To bypass the enhanced security restriuctions, please refer: Adobe Acrobat X Pro * Enhanced security

  • File not readable

I have been working on my sister in laws wedding imovie project and now when I try and open it, it says file not readable. I can open other saved movies and when i tried to start a new one and saved it, the new one is also saying file not readable. Is there any hope? Can I fix it so I can do a new one?

The project has probably been damaged, usually the result of emptying the iMovie trash. If you'd like me to try to rescue it, see my note here:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1329742&#1329742
If a project is unreadable, it may be (indirectly) affecting your trying to open the new project, causing you to conclude it is unreadable too.
Double-clicking on the iMovie application to launch it — or single-clicking on iMovie in the Dock — normally causes iMovie to open the most recently-opened project. The name of that project is saved in the iMovie preference file.
iMovie may be repeatedly trying to open the corrupt project instead of the new one, creating the (false) impression the new project is corrupt too.
It's also possible iMovie is damaged, but that doesn't usually cause iMovie to complain it can't read a project. It just fails to open.
My guess is the problem is limited to just one project. To find out for sure, double-click on a project you KNOW is okay to open iMovie, create a new project, save it, quit iMovie and re-launch iMovie. If the new project opens, everything is okay, but the corrupt project needs fixing.

  • "The disk you inserted is not readable"

I recently ordered some CDs with business information on them and I am having trouble reading the disks.
When I insert either one, I get the message: “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.”
They seem to be ordinary homemade CDs, probably from a PC, but I thought superdrive could read those. I've been able to read other CDs from a PC. I tried basic troubleshooting such as restarting the computer, etc.
Is it possible to burn CDs on a PC in such a way that they are not readable by Macs?
I would guess that the contents of the disks are just PDFs or TIFFs, text files and perhaps an MP3 or two, all files that are cross-platform, so it seems to be an issue with reading the disk itself.

I wouldn't think this applies to OS 10.4, but you can try the OS 10.3 tips given in Work with PC Joliet Level 3 CDs.

  • IPhoto Titles of Events are not readable

    Hi,
i´ve an issue with the interaction of background colour and text colour. In the event view background is dark grey and text is black. Therefore you can hardly read the text under events. When i change background colour only in picture view can changes be noticed. Generally the headlines in black are not readable if you prefer dark grey as background. Any suggestions? Thank´s in advance.
    Dirk

    hoernerD:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. That's strange because my Event view background is black and the text is white. When viewing an open event the background can be adjusted in iPhoto Preferences just the same as the Photos view.
Try deleting the iPhoto preference file, com.apple.iPhoto.plist, from your User/Library/Preferences folder and see if that will help.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've written an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
