PDF different in Acrobat versions

I have had 2 pages this week that look good in Acrobat 9, and when I
view them in Acrobat 8 stuff disappears or is corrupt. In one case it is the text on the page that gets corrupt and has x's and boxes all over it. In the other case the picture dissapears. It is not an overprint preview problem. In both cases the PDF version was 1.6
Anybody have this issue
Thanks,
Rick

I have a customer supplying a PDF of an ad that was originally a CS3 (ver unknown at this time) placed in CS4 and output as ver1.5. I have attached a screenshot of this CS4 ad opened in (L to R) Acrobat 7, 8 and 9...
The view in 7 (L) has multiple lines of type messed up...
The view in 8 (M) has one line directly above the logo with all but 2 characters missing and ? marks in its place...It printed this way...
The view in 9 (R) is perfect...
What gives?
Anyone?

  • PDF displays differently in Acrobat 8 to 7 or 9?

An external supplied PDF exported from Indesign CS4 all fonts embedded was imported into Prinergy and refined. If the Prinergy  PDF is opened in Acrobat 7 or 9 it looks like the original and the Prinergy PDF is dropped onto a hotfolder and printed out on a Xerox printer with a Level 3 rip it looks fine.
If you open the PDF in Acrobat 8 one of the fonts is corrupt. We created a Scitex CT file, proofed  the Scitex CT file, the font proofs as being corrupted. Creating a Prinergy VPS shows the font as being corrupt.
Any ides on why Acrobat 8 display the PDF differently to Acrobat 7 and 9? All version of Acrobat are fully patched and we have tested on several computers.
    Regards
    Denis

The files are not secured.  Some of the files are part of a pdf portfolio, where the portfolio is a mixture of pdfs created/scanned in 8 and pdfs created/scanned in X and combined into a pdf portfolio by X.  The troubled X files are not visible in 8 as standalone files or as files inside the portfolio.  Some of the files have never been combined into a portfolio and are not visible to 8.
It does not happen to all of the scans.  Some scans done by X are visible in 8 and others are not, even though the scan settings used are the same.  Strangely, all of the files, whether visible in 8 or not, are visible in X.  The lack of visibility in 8 occurs across multiple machines using 8, not just one machine, and the same pattern occurs across multiple machines running 9.
I have examples of the files, but they contain private information.  One such file is two pages.  It is a standalone file, not a pdf portfolio.  The second page is visible in 8, but the first page is not; both pages are visible in X.  If I delete the second page (confidential information) and post the file, will the second page be visible by any means?
Additionally, the file pages are enormous to print even though they were scanned at 400 dpi, color, jpeg2000, jbig2 (lossy), deskew on, background removal off, descreen on, text sharpening, low.  The first page was 63.7 MB to print and the second page was 97.2 MB to print.  The entire file is only 1913 KB.
Do you think that I have a bad install and should just uninstall and reinstall?

  • Saving as PDF from Excel looks different to Excel version

    Hi
I have been working in Excel and been saving PDF files for the past year using the inbuilt feature in Excel. I have recently installed Adobe Acrobat so that I could save PDFs directly from Excel instead. When I save exactly the same file from Excel, the adobe acrobat PDF looks different to the excel PDF version.
I have uploaded an image to show you what I mean.
    http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=1z1ux6d&s=8
The image on the left is the correct version, this version was saved using the "Save As PDF" option built into excel. The image on the right is the version saved with the Excel acrobat add-in. You can notice how the font is different on acrobat version, the part where it says "Date" and "Description. You will also notice the black lines above the little card icons do not go right to the end of the line like they should. Each of of them little card icons is a seperate image, does Acroboat have trouble converting these little images or something as they appear fine on the Excel version.
Is there anything that can be done so converting it to PDF will look closer to how its suppose to look?

I checked the properties of each file. The Excel PDF version has more fonts listed in the properties section compared to the PDF maker one. I can select the "Date" and "description" and copy and paste it as text but now it appears the text is fine, its showing correctly now even though I havent changed anything.
The icon problem is still there though.
I have also attached another image of a close up of the little card icons:
    http://tinypic.com/view.php?pic=nqac9j&s=8
The version on the right is correct, created within the built in PDF feature in Excel. The version on the left, created with the Excel pdf maker addin.

  • Render PDF component - PDF and Acrobat version

We are using the Render PDF component in Workbench to generate a PDF. We require the PDF to be compatible with Acrobat version 6 and higher. When we set the PDF version in the Render PDF input properties, or set a value less than 7.0.5 for Acrobat version, the PDF does not get generated. Is the Render PDF component not capable of generating PDF compatible with Acrobat versions lesser than 7.0.5?
    Thanks.

The target version in Form Properties->Defaults is set to Acrobat or Adobe Reader 6.0.2 or later.

  • PDF portfolios in Acrobat X Pro - being viewed on the new XI reader version

    Hi
We currently produce PDF portfolios in Acrobat X Pro - Can these be viewed on the new XI version without problems?
I have heard from other people, that they experience issues - has anyone heard/seen this?
    Thanks

    Hi Chris.Parry,
Portfolios created in Acrobat X Pro can definitely be viewed in version XI.
If you've heard of issues between versions, it is probably regarding people trying to edit/update portfolios created in version 9. Portfolios created in version 9 are different than those in X and XI.
Please see this page regarding A11 compatibility with Acrobat 9 Portfolios:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/overview-pdf-portfolios.html#overview_of_pdf_portfol ios
    and specifically this section:
    https://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/overview-pdf-portfolios.html#pdf_portfolios_created_ in_acrobat_9_acrobat_pro
That said, testing is always a good idea. :-)

  • How do I edit a PDF file using Acrobat 9 - Version 9.4.0

My company - [name deleted by host] purchased Acrobat 9 - Version 9.4.0. for me
How do I edit a PDF file using Acrobat 9 - Version 9.4.0
I need to edit - copy, extract text, add text, etc. from existing PDF files to SAVE my changes,
or create a new PDF file from an existing file.
This is very important for me to be able to do my job effectively.
I spent over 2 hrs the last few days, and another hour today, still can't do it.
PLEASE respond ASAP with a solution.
    Thanks in advance,

PDF is an end destination format - although Acrobat is capable of making minor changes to a file (e.g. to correct typos) it is not a word processor or DTP application. Major changes must be done in the original document, and the PDF file re-exported.
You can copy text from a file by selecting it and right-clicking, or you can save the file as plain or formatted text. To make small changes to the text on a page, use the touchup tool - see the help file for more info.

How do I add pages to a PDF in the iPad version of Acrobat reader

    You don't.
Adobe Reader is a reader application. You can't use it to do editing.
If you have Adobe Acrobat on Mac or Windows, you can add pages.

  • PDF file error in  Acrobat version 9.0

    Hi guys,
I am able to see the see PDF document via document viewer tcode - SDV if the local desktop Acrobat version is 7.0 but in other machines which has Acrobat reader 9.0. the document cannot be opened it saves in the desktop as .FAX file.
I am using the SAPGUI version 640 release.
Please let me know the reason.
    regards,
    Prabhu

    Hello Prabhu,
this is a known issue. Please see note 1308147:
The ECL Viewer 6.0 delivered with the SAP GUI 7.10 Compilation 3 has
compatibility issues with Adobe 9 (Adobe Reader 9 or Adobe Professional
9 or Adobe Standard 9). The SAP GUI crashes/freezes when viewing PDF
    files in transactions like SNOTE.
The same problem is experienced if the standalone version of the ECL
Viewer 6.0 is used with Adobe 9. But in this case the SAP GUI
crash/freeze happens only if the ECL Viewer 6.0 is used in applications
like SAP Document Mgmt. System to view PDFs first followed by PDF
    viewing in transaction like SNOTE
    Other terms
    ECL Viewer 6.0, Adobe 9, SAP GUI 7.10 C3
    Reason and Prerequisites
The ECL Viewer 6.0 supplies Adobe libraries which are not compatible
with the ones supplied with Adobe Reader 9.
The note is applicable to you only if you have installed the SAP GUI
7.10 C3 with the Engineering Client Viewer for SAP GUI 7.10.
Also, If in case you have installed the standalone version of the ECL
Viewer 6.0 and use it in applications which use ECL Viewer within the
    SAP GUI
    Solution
The Current workaround is to use lower versions of Adobe Reader till
there is further update on this incompatibility.
For more details on work arounds, please refer to the link given below

  • Issue when opening PDF forms in Acrobat X

First, pardon me if this is the incorrect forum for this post.  I did not locate any general technical support board for Acrobat X but I could have missed it.
I have a user who has Adobe Acrobat X Standard (10.1.6) installed on his computer system.  He is able to generate PDF files and open regular PDF files without issues.  However, if he opens up any PDF which is a form, Acrobat immediately crashes.  His computer is a Windows 7 Professional x64 system.  Antivirus on the system is GFI Vipre Business.
Here is what I have tried:
Update Acrobat with the latest patches/updates.
Different Windows profile with administrator rights.
Removed Acrobat and reinstall through normal convential means.
Removed Acrobat via tool at http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/acrobatcleaner.html.
Remove Acrobat and then do a manual clean of the registry and Windows Explorer.
Cleaned up fonts on the system.  This might not have been done right but based on the error, perhaps you all can offer suggestions on if this error is related to font issues.
I would perform a system restore, but this user is unsure of when this issue started happening exactly.  So, we'd be in the dark on this.  The only thing that I can think I haven't tried is a wipe of the computer.
    Here are the specific errors:
This error is received when trying to directly open a form PDF on the system:
Title: Font Capture: Acrobat.exe - Bad Image
Message: C:\Windows\system32\ATMLIB.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.  Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.

Hi, I am having the same problem as your user when I try to open a pdf form in acrobat. I also have had a similar problem, still unresolved, described here: http://forums.adobe.com/message/5146964.
I can't find any solutions. I even tried uninstalling Acrobat X pro and instead gong back to installing Acrobat 9. Same problems persist. Don't know what to do.

  • HP 8500A saves scans as v1.3 PDF. I need version 1.4 or above.

The scanner on an HP 8500A, product number CM755A, scans and saves as a PDF to a network drive.
It works well, but in the properties of the saved PDF show it is Version 1.3
We need to e-mail the scanned image to customers including some who can only read PDFs version 1.4 or above
We have a workaround of printing the saved PDF using CutePDF or similar, which saves the new PDF as version 1.4
This can then be emailed to our customers who can read it, no problem.
But as this is a hassle, and we do not know which customers might be affected, I need to update the scanner to save as a v1.4+ PDF. I tried updating the firmware, but it tells me that it is already up-to-date.
Is there any way to fix this?
    Thanks for your help.
    Andrew

I have the latest Adobe reader
Adobe Reader cannot create a PDF (even from a scan).
Acrobat (Standard or Pro) is required for that.
Even with Acrobat the actual "scan" and image output is a process that is exclusive to the scanner and its software.
The scanner/scanner software image output file is handed off to Acrobat for conversion to PDF.
Not having Acrobat means that the PDF created is coming from software bundled with the scanner/scanner software.
That a version 1.3 (Acrobat 4) PDF is created indicates the bundled stuff is, well... "old" .
By design Acrobat creates/saves a PDF to a PDF version that is "one back".
Acrobat Pro has the ability to process a given PDF to be compatible with different PDF versions.
(e.g., the Optimizer facility or Preflights)
If it is important that you have a PDF created to a newer version you may want to consider obtaining Acrobat or updating whatever was bundled with your scanner.
    Be well...

  • How to edit a PDF created with Acrobat XI Pro after signatures have been applied (like I can in 7, 8.0

I have a major issue that I need to resolve before we can purchase Acrobat XI Pro:
Currently, with Acrobat 8.1 Pro, after all signatories sign a document, we add an Effective Date (we add it after they sign since we don't know when the last signature will be acquired and we can't have an Effective Date that is before the date of the last signatory, otherwise, it would be effective before they signed it, which is not possible). I'm also allowed the latitude (as stated in our Documentation Control procedure) to make spelling corrections, hyperlink updates and minor formatting changes (by using the typewriter tool and also by replacing a page that is NOT the signed page if the change repaginates the document or involves modifying a hyperlink that has changed).
In all of the previous versions of Acrobat that we've used (7 Pro, 8 Pro and 8.1 Pro) , this has been easily possible and all changes would be listed under the Signatures tab, which is exactly what we want, which is traceability.
I'm using the trial version of Acrobat XI Pro now but am getting the message "This document is signed and can not be edited." If I bring the same PDF that was created from Word 2003 & 2013 using Acrobat XI Pro into 8.1 Pro, though, I CAN add the date, use the typewriter tool and replace non-signed pages, save it and exit without clearing or losing any signatures.
My question is this: How can I do this in Acrobat XI Pro, as XI Pro (in the Signature pane) also lists the changes made to the document when it was edited using 8.1 Pro? (It's OK that the changes made to the PDF then mark the signatures as "invalid", as the reason why they were invalidated is also listed in the Signature pane, e.g. "Form Field Added", which is usually the applied Effective Date.)
    Thanks for any help!

Acrobat versions prior to 9 had a bug which allowed you to do what you did. In Acrobat 9 this bug was fixed. In order to do what you want you need to certify (apply special certification digital signature with your certificate -- it is "Certify (Visible/Invisible)" choice in the "Work with Certificates") your document first. In the process of certification you can specify which modification permissions you allow the users of your document to make after signing. Certification signature must be the first signature in the document.
