PDF displays differently in Acrobat 8 to 7 or 9?

An external supplied PDF exported from Indesign CS4 all fonts embedded was imported into Prinergy and refined. If the Prinergy  PDF is opened in Acrobat 7 or 9 it looks like the original and the Prinergy PDF is dropped onto a hotfolder and printed out on a Xerox printer with a Level 3 rip it looks fine.
If you open the PDF in Acrobat 8 one of the fonts is corrupt. We created a Scitex CT file, proofed  the Scitex CT file, the font proofs as being corrupted. Creating a Prinergy VPS shows the font as being corrupt.
Any ides on why Acrobat 8 display the PDF differently to Acrobat 7 and 9? All version of Acrobat are fully patched and we have tested on several computers.
Regards
Denis

The files are not secured.  Some of the files are part of a pdf portfolio, where the portfolio is a mixture of pdfs created/scanned in 8 and pdfs created/scanned in X and combined into a pdf portfolio by X.  The troubled X files are not visible in 8 as standalone files or as files inside the portfolio.  Some of the files have never been combined into a portfolio and are not visible to 8.
It does not happen to all of the scans.  Some scans done by X are visible in 8 and others are not, even though the scan settings used are the same.  Strangely, all of the files, whether visible in 8 or not, are visible in X.  The lack of visibility in 8 occurs across multiple machines using 8, not just one machine, and the same pattern occurs across multiple machines running 9.
I have examples of the files, but they contain private information.  One such file is two pages.  It is a standalone file, not a pdf portfolio.  The second page is visible in 8, but the first page is not; both pages are visible in X.  If I delete the second page (confidential information) and post the file, will the second page be visible by any means?
Additionally, the file pages are enormous to print even though they were scanned at 400 dpi, color, jpeg2000, jbig2 (lossy), deskew on, background removal off, descreen on, text sharpening, low.  The first page was 63.7 MB to print and the second page was 97.2 MB to print.  The entire file is only 1913 KB.
Do you think that I have a bad install and should just uninstall and reinstall?

  • PDF displays differently from Illustrator CS4 to Acrobat 9.1.x - no idea why

My name is Chris Plessinger. I'm the local IT support for a company that produces promotional products.
Recently, the Art Department came to me with a problem.
They had a graphic that was sent to them by the customer in a PDF file.
The PDF, when opened in Acrobat 9.1, shows an image with another image imposed on the lower left hand corner.
When the PDF is opened in Illustrator CS4, the image is there, but the smaller image that was imposed on the lower left corner isn't there.
In Illustrator, when you press CTRL-Y, you can see the outline of where it would be, but it's clearly not there.
I'm don't know enough about the software to determine why it is showing up in one Adobe product and not displaying in another.
I am uploading the file in question to this post.
I would be very, very appreciative of any feedback on I can get on this issue. I'm not a graphic artist and can't answer the question being posed to me.

    Sweet.
But I have a new question now: how (exactly) did you accomplish this? How did you flatten it?
Thanks for the quick response. I appreciate your taking the time to help.
    Thanks,

  • PDFs display differently in Internet Explorer 9 versus FireFox

We use Adobe Reader X in all cases (10.4.1)
On old computer, we have a website we go to using Internet Explorer (version 8.x on XP) where we ope/save & print to a PDF file. The information on the PDF prints vaules in a certain order - for example:   A,B, C    --works great--this is what we want it to do.
We buy a new computer, Windows 7 with IE9, and the PDF displays with the same values in this order:  C,B, A  -   not good, do not want that.
We try FireFox on the new computer  -- works great --just like it did on the old computer.
What setting in IE9 is causing this PDF to display differently than in FireFox (or IE8)?
UPDATE:  We did load IE8 on Windows 7 (by uninstalling IE9) and the PDF works fine --so it's not just something unique to FireFox. IE9 is displaying information in this PDF differently--why?

Add/update these params in your web.xml and redeploy so the style class names are not optimized and client debugging is easier.

  • PDFs display correctly in Acrobat Pro, but not in Reader?

I receive files from printers for UV coating their jobs at our facility. On rare occasions the PDFs I receive display one way in Reader, and another way in Acrobat. Text that is missing--or showing up as faint outlines in Reader--displays correctly in Acrobat Pro. Then, when I go to RIP the file (and it is a PDF workflow), the text is missing there as well. We end up having to pay a service bureau to output a film positive, so it's a bit frustrating. I suspect it has something to do with transparency. I would appreciate any ideas from veteran prepress folks out there.

Change your preferences Edit > Preferences > Page Display  Use Overprint Preview to Always.
These sound like Spot UV plates/colors and would be designed with Overprinting
Are you also looking at the Seperations/Output Preview?  (Advanced > Print Production > Output Preview   Simulate Overprint can also be toggled there.)

  • Same PDF displaying differently on iPhone vs. computer

We had a client email a .pdf to a goup of users here.  When we look at it on the computer (or another smart phone), it shows up one way, but when we look at the same echange email attachement on an iPhone/iPhone4, it seems to be a different version.  It's almost like they made edits, but it didn't save them.  Has anyone seen anything like this before?

I see the same effect.  I had the submission for my company for UK Companies House to review from the accountants.  I opened it from email on my iPad and there was just the form there.  Asked accountants what was going on and they were puzzled.  I opened the PDF from the same email on my W7 laptop and it displayed the company information just fine.
The text was also missing when I opened the PDF in iBooks.  And my iPhone has the same problem.
Does the iPad and iPhone only support an older version of PDF?

  • PDF file displays different number of text blocks in Acrobat Pro CC 2014 and CS6 versions

    Hi,
I've inherited a file at work that displays different numbers of text blocks, depending on the version of Acrobat Pro used to view the file. Here's the specific issue:
    As viewed in CC 2014:
"Chapter 1 - Chapter One Title": Appears as two text blocks -- one for "Chapter 1 - " and one for "Chapter One Title"
    As viewed in CS 6:
"Chapter 1 - Chapter One Title": Appears as a single text block -- "Chapter 1 - Chapter One Title"
This occurs only with regard to single-digit chapter numbers that are whole numbers. So:
Chapter 1, Chapter 5, and Chapter 7 entries appear as two blocks in CC 2014, one block in CS6.
Chapter 2.0, Chapter 6.1, Chapter 10, entries appear in single blocks in both CC 2014 and CS6.
The PDF file was created -- I believe -- through the save-to-PDF feature in Word 2010.
    Any idea what's happening here?
    Thanks.
    David

First of all, there is no such thing as Acrobat CS6 or Acrobat CC 2014. We assume you are referring to Acrobat X and Acrobat XI respectively.
Secondly, how are you determining how many text blocks are in the PDF file? By use of the text touchup/edit function in Acrobat? If so, how this edit function displays text doesn't necessarily correspond to the actually underlying text fragments in the PDF file. In fact, sometimes it combines fragments based on heuristics. Those heuristics have varied with different version of Acrobat.
PDF as a file format doesn't know the context of the graphical objects such as text. There is no concept of a line, a sentence, a paragraph, a column, etc. in terms of text. Runs of text are context-insensitive. You will get “breaks” when switching between regular and italics or when unusual paragraph justification is involved.
Is the actual problem in trying to edit the text or something else?
If you post a file, and indicate what text we should look at, we can confirm what is actually going on in your file.

  • Pdf 1.3 display incorrectly in Acrobat 9

I have a pdf 1.3 which was exported from CS4, When I render the file on our rip I get squares on a particular font which is embedded subset.
The weird thing that the pdf displays the way it intended to be " the font displays correctly" in Acro 9.
When the same file is opened in Acro 5 the screen result is exactly as reproduced on our print i.e Squares.
Finally received a call from an Adobe Tech,
The answer was: We do not support Acrobat 5 anymore.
The developers have changed so many things in Acrobat 9, and I cannot find any documentation to answer your questions.
In other words I HAVE NO IDEA!!!

My engineers are just starting to upgrade to Acrobat 9.0 standard.   We were forces to from out 6.0, which worked just fine.  So far only one person has noticed their screen going black and the toolbars disappearing.  He does not have any READER installed which shouldn't matter.  It appears from what I've read here there is no solution at this time.  It doesn't happen to him all the time but it's very frustrating when it does.  The only thing he can do is quit out of the window and start up another window.

  • The font weight on exported PDF's differs on pages w/ graphics in Acrobat?

    Hi,
I couldn't find anyone addressing this, so here goes...
I just upgraded to iWork '06/Pages 2.02 so I could export PDF eBooks and retain the hyperlinks. Everything is working great, except that when I view the PDFs in Safari with Acrobat Reader (rather than Preview) or on a Win machine with Acrobat reader), pages that have images on them (and sometimes different bolded fonts) affect the weight of the normal article (non-bolded) font. In other words, the normal font will look slightly bolded on pages where there are also images, whereas the weight looks fine (as it did in Pages) on pages where it's only text.
This does not happen while viewing the PDF in Preview. This seems like a bug in the way Pages is compressing the PDF, which seems to be present regardless of the export quality setting used.
Has anyone else encountered this and are there any work-arounds?
    Thanks a bunch!
    -Mark

    Hello Mark
PDF/X-3 (what Save As PDF-X creates) is a standard developed for print with the intention of eliminating compatibility problems for people submitting jobs to outside print services. It ensures that the necessary font subsets are embedded into the PDF. Maybe this is why it fixes your font problems although I've often noticed issues with fonts both on Windows and OS X. Unless you are zoomed in quite close, they can look poor on screen but print quite well. This seems to be an artifact of the viewers and font dependent.
I'm quite surprised that your hyperlinks work. Given that they are for interactive purposes I would have thought that the PDF/X-3 production process would have stripped them out.
I'm not at my Mac right now so I can't verify this but you may be able to create your own PDF workflow with Automator that generates the precise amount of image compression and font subsetting you require for your PDFs.

Can't view PDF on the web
have done EVERY single thing on this page to no avail, pdfs display fine in every other browser and on pc, just not in ie
I have acrobat pro 11 and windows 8.1

Install the latest update of Reader or Acrobat (done, no effect)
Adobe releases free security updates quarterly. It is important to update your version of Reader or Acrobat to the latest release. The updates often include fixes to common problems. Download the latest free update:
Note: Microsoft Windows 7 requires Adobe Reader 9.2 or later.
    1.      Open Reader or Acrobat.
    2.      Choose Help > Check for Updates. If a new update is available, it installs automatically.
    3.      Once installed, restart your computer.
    To the top<http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/cant-view-pdf-web.html>
Refresh or reload the page (done, no effect)
Often, just refreshing the page allows the PDF to load fully.
Hold down the Shift key and press the    Refresh or    Reload button in the browser.
Try to view a different PDF (done, no effect)
Try viewing a different PDF. For example, see if this sample form<http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Samples/flatform.pdf> displays in your browser.(DOES NOT OPEN) If Acrobat or Reader can open the sample form, then the other PDF could be damaged or the web server could be having problems. If possible, contact the individual or company who manages the website.
    1.      Try to view a PDF on your hard drive .  (ALL PDFS OPEN ON HARD DRIVE)
    To the top<http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/cant-view-pdf-web.html>
Problem with the browser or its settings?
Use a different web browser  (Pdf'S open in alternate browsers)
Certain conditions on your computer, such as security settings or browser cookies, can prevent you from viewing a PDF. Often, the fastest solution is to try to open the page using a different browser. Try any of the following browsers that you have not already tried:
    Mozilla Firefox<http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/>
    Microsoft Internet Explorer<http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx>
    Apple Safari<http://www.apple.com/safari/download>
For a list of compatible browsers for Reader and Acrobat X, see this list of Compatible web browsers<http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/compatible-web-browsers-pdfmaker-applications.html>.
Switch to Compatibility View (Internet Explorer) (done, no effect)
Some websites display better in the Compatibility View of Internet Explorer. The Compatibility View displays a page as if it was an earlier version of the browser. For instructions on how to switch to this view, see one of these documents on the Microsoft website:
Internet Explorer 9: How to use Compatibility View in Internet Explorer 9<http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/How-to-use-Compatibility-View-in-Internet-Expl orer-9>
Internet Explorer 8: Why are some web pages blank or incorrectly displayed in Internet Explorer<http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/webpages-look-incorrect-in-Internet-Explorer>.
Restart your computer and try opening the PDF again (done, no effect)
Restart your computer, then open the web page again. Restarting clears the computer memory and memory cache. It is surprising how often simply restarting your computer resolves a display issue.
Delete temporary Internet files (Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome) (done, no effect)
Clear the browser cache (sometimes called 'temporary Internet files') to ensure that you are viewing a fresh version of the page. When you open a web page, the browser saves a temporary copy so that it opens more quickly next time. You want to force the browser to load the entire page directly from the server, rather than displaying a stored copy.
Reset the Display PDF In Browser preference (done, no effect)
    1.      In Reader or Acrobat, right-click the document window, and select Page Display Preferences.
    2.      From the list at left, select Internet.
    3.      Deselect Display PDF In Browser, and then click OK.
    4.      Choose Edit > Preferences > Internet, select Display PDF In Browser, and then click OK.
    5.      Try to open the PDF again from the website.
View PDF in 32-bit version of Internet Explorer or Safari (done, no effect)
Acrobat and Reader are 32-bit applications on Windows. If you try to open a PDF in a 64-bit version of Internet Explorer, the PDF opens in stand-alone Acrobat or Reader, not in Internet Explorer.
Remove DreamFactory (Firefox only) (done, no effect)
If you receive the error "Cannot use Adobe Reader to view PDFs in your web browser," do the following:
    1.      Choose Start > Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open text box, and then click OK to open the Add Or Remove Programs dialog box.
    2.      Select Change Or Remove Programs in the Add Or Remove Programs dialog box, select DreamFactory Runtime for Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox, and click Change/Remove.
    3.      Click OK in the Remove Programs From Your Computer dialog box.
    To the top<http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/cant-view-pdf-web.html>
    Problem with Reader or Acrobat?
Remove unmatched or multiple versions of Reader or Acrobat  (already did this including running a cleaner from the Adobe site) (done, no effect)
Repair Reader or Acrobat (done, no effect)
Reader or Acrobat could be damaged. Repairing the installation is a quick troubleshooting safeguard.
Repair from within Reader or Acrobat (done, no effect)
(Reader) Choose Help > Repair Adobe Reader Installation.
(Acrobat) Choose Help > Repair Acrobat Installation.
Repair using Control Panel (Windows) (done, no effect)
You can also repair your Acrobat or Reader installation using the Windows Control Panel.
Enable the Adobe PDF browser add-on (Internet Explorer) (done, no effect)
Make sure that the Adobe PDF browser add-on, AdobePDF.dll, is enabled.
Run Acrobat or Reader in a new local administrator account (done, no effect)
Optimize large PDF files (not the problem)
If the PDF file is 4 MB or larger, ask the provider to optimize the PDF file. For information about optimizing PDF files, see
Check the registry path for Acrobat or Reader (Windows) (done, no effect)
Repair the HKCR\AcroExch.Document registry key (Windows) (done, no effect)

  • I've created a PDF form using Adobe acrobat. I created the forms from a PDF that I made using pages

I've created a PDF form using Adobe acrobat. I created the forms from a PDF that I made using pages and word on Mac running Mountain lion. How do I allow the user of the form to insert JPEG files when filling out the form and how do I allow the user to add more fields or groups of fields as needed.

The type of form yo're describing is possible if you create it in LiveCycle Designer. It may also be possible in Acrobat, but there are certain restrictions. The type of form is known as a dynamic XFA form. LiveCycle Designer is not available on the Mac, so you'd have to install the software on a Windows machine and learn how to create this type of form. The LiveCycle Designer forum here is a good resource for getting more help.
Reader 11 now supports creating new pages using templates with a form that you create in Acrobat (Acroform). This requires some JavaScript programming. It also adds support for using a button to display a page from a PDF, which can be an image or anything else a PDF can be. So the user would click a button, be prompted to import a page from an existing PDF, and the button (or a different button) displays it as its icon. This would require the user to convert the image to PDF first, which is relatively easy these days (e.g., using Preview on the Mac, or Word on Mac/Windows). This too involves a bit of JavaScript programming, but it's very simple and straightforward.

  • [Bug Report] CR4E V2: Exported PDF displays Japanese characters incorrectly

We now plan to transport a legacy application from VB to Java with Crystal Reports for Eclipse. It is required to export report as PDF file, but result PDFs display Japanese characters incorrectly for field with some mostly used Japanese fonts (MS Gothic & Mincho).
Here is our sample Crystal Reports project:   [download related resources here|http://sites.google.com/site/cr4eexportpdf/example-of-cr4e-export-pdf]
    1. PDFExportSample.rpt located under ..\src contains fields with different Japanese fonts.
    2. Run SampleViewerFrameClient#main(..) to open a Java Report Viewer:
        a) At zoom rate 100%, everything is ok.
        b) Change zoom rate to 200% or 50%, some fields in Japanese font collapse.
        c) Export to PDF file,
             * Fonts "MS Gothic & Mincho": both ASCII & Japanese characters failed.
             * Fonts "Meiryo & HGKyokashotai": everything works well.
             * Open PDF properties, you will see all fonts are embedded with built-in encoding.
             * Interest to note that copy collapsed Japanese characters from Acrobat Reader, then
paste them into a Notepad window, Notepad will show the correct Japanese characters anyway.
It seems PDF export in CR4E mistaking to choose right typeface for Japanese characters
               from some TTF file.
    3. Open PDFExportSample.rpt in Crystal Report 2008 Designer (trial version), and export it as PDF.
The result PDF displays both ASCII & Japanese characters without any problem.
    Test environment as below:
    * Windows XP Professional SP3 (Japanese) with MS Office which including extra fonts (i.e. HGKyokashotai)
    * Font version: MS Gothic, Mincho, Meiryo, all in Version 5.0
You can download MS Meiryo from Microsoft's Site:
        http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=F7D758D2-46FF-4C55-92F2-69AE834AC928&displaylang=en)
    * Eclipse 3.5.2
    * Crystal Reports for Eclipse, V2, 12.2.207.r916
Can this problem be fixed? If yes how long will it take to release a patch?
We really looking forward to a solution before abandoning CR4E.
    Thanks for any reply.

I have created a [simple PDF file|http://sites.google.com/site/cr4eexportpdf/inside-the-pdf/simple.pdf?attredirects=0&d=1] exported from CR4E. It is expected to display "漢字" (or in unicode as "\u6F22\u5B57"), but instead being rendered in different ones of "殱塸" (in unicode as "\u6BB1\u5878").

It seems everything OK except CR4E failed to choose right typefaces from the TrueType file (msgothic.ttc).
Is it any help? I am looking forward to any solution.

Just as you cannot post on this forum without creating an

    in order to post.
The title of these forums clearly indicate they are for
Acrobat.com users and not users of the Acrobat desktop software.
You will also find a post outlining this as the first post in the
General Discussions forum, where I see you have also posted your
same question and gotten the same answers.
    Do
you need support for Acrobat 9? or Acrobat.com?
Just as we would not provide answers for other Adobe products

not be providing support for the Acrobat desktop product on these
forums as it is a separate product from Acrobat.com. I understand

confusion, but you will need to proceed to the Acrobat forums in
order to ask questions about your Acrobat product. As you have been

  • Creating a .pdf with different page views

I'm tyring to create a .pdf with different page views.  For example as the viewer goes through the .pdf some pages I would like viewed as "single page view" and others "two page view".  Is this possible?   I'm working with Adobe Acrobate Pro.  Thanks for any suggestions.

It's possible to use the Page Open actions to trigger a view mode change but it's messy - if the user tries to override them because they prefer to zoom in, etc. then they'll get very annoyed when things keep resetting.
To create a Page Open action, open the thumbnails panel, right-click on a page, choose Page Properties, then the Actions tab. You can use the Execute a Menu Item tool to fire one of the view modes.

  • How can I use the "Copy and paste" tool in order get stamps in the same position in different pages (Acrobat XI for PC)?

With Acrobat 6.0 I was able to copy a stamp in the same position (I mean "exactly" the same one) of different pages just by using the "copy/past" tool.
Now I am using Acrobat XI and it seems like it is not possible anymore: I am copying a stamp and I am trying to past it in anoter page, but it appears in the center of the page (or wherever it wants to...).
    Does anyone have a solution?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you very much. I'll be waiting for you message.

Well, I was in the same situation so I've developed a tool that allows one to do it. I will send you some additional information about it in a private message.
