PDF displays fine, but prints garbage

I'm stumped on this one...  I've been using MacOS X since the Public Beta came out in 2000, and I've never run into anything like this when working with PDF files.
My Natural Gas provider - Atmos Energy - allows me to download PDF copies of old statements from their website.  The PDF downloads as expected, opens in Preview without any issues, and displays the statement perfectly.
Then I print the PDF to my Lexmark X546dtn color laser.  It prints out, but all of the account-specific text has been replaced with garbled ASCII characters.  The overall structure of the statement prints correctly (lines, shapes, logos, etc) as does the generic text that they include as information for every customer (i.e. Call us immediately if you smell gas).  But everything else is complete garbage.
A couple of examples... (Visible on Screen -> What's Printed Instead):
PREVIOUS BALANCE -> KQSSQGT)QG<RP:N*QRGI
05/10/13 -> 3<C=3C=D
PAST DUE AFTER -> MN3*)LO!)N<*!P
When I Select All (text) in the PDF in Preview, it copies / pastes the correct strings into a text editor.  When I choose "Export to PDF" the file it creates, however, has the same garbled text that shows up when I print it on my Lexmark.
I've submitted a support request to Atmos, but don't have very high expectations that they'll be able to offer any help.  I'm really not sure what's going on here, any ideas?
In case it helps, the "PDF Producer" is listed as "StreamServe Communication Server 5.5.0 GA Build 1684".
Thanks!

A bit more info before I move on to more productive endeavors this evening...
I fired up Windows XP in VMware to see if Adobe Reader under Windows XP would be able to handle the file correctly.  Nope, but at least it gives an error message that may point to the problem.  Adobe Reader says "Cannot find or create the font 'WFQXRK+AA0101+Verdana-Bold'.  Some characters may not display or print correctly."  I'm guessing the dynamically generated document is being created with an invalid font name (server-side bug).  Preview probably auto-substitutes a standard font for displaying the PDF onscreen, but when the PDF is sent to the printer it's probably sent as a native PDF, invalid font-name and all.

have done EVERY single thing on this page to no avail, pdfs display fine in every other browser and on pc, just not in ie

Install the latest update of Reader or Acrobat (done, no effect)
Adobe releases free security updates quarterly. It is important to update your version of Reader or Acrobat to the latest release. The updates often include fixes to common problems. Download the latest free update:
Note: Microsoft Windows 7 requires Adobe Reader 9.2 or later.
    1.      Open Reader or Acrobat.
    2.      Choose Help > Check for Updates. If a new update is available, it installs automatically.
    3.      Once installed, restart your computer.

Refresh or reload the page (done, no effect)
Often, just refreshing the page allows the PDF to load fully.
Hold down the Shift key and press the    Refresh or    Reload button in the browser.
Try to view a different PDF (done, no effect)
Try viewing a different PDF. For example, see if this sample form<http://help.adobe.com/en_US/Acrobat/9.0/Samples/flatform.pdf> displays in your browser.(DOES NOT OPEN) If Acrobat or Reader can open the sample form, then the other PDF could be damaged or the web server could be having problems. If possible, contact the individual or company who manages the website.

Problem with the browser or its settings?
Use a different web browser  (Pdf'S open in alternate browsers)
Certain conditions on your computer, such as security settings or browser cookies, can prevent you from viewing a PDF. Often, the fastest solution is to try to open the page using a different browser. Try any of the following browsers that you have not already tried:
    Mozilla Firefox<http://www.mozilla.com/firefox/>
    Microsoft Internet Explorer<http://www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx>
    Apple Safari<http://www.apple.com/safari/download>
For a list of compatible browsers for Reader and Acrobat X, see this list of Compatible web browsers<http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/compatible-web-browsers-pdfmaker-applications.html>.
Switch to Compatibility View (Internet Explorer) (done, no effect)
Some websites display better in the Compatibility View of Internet Explorer. The Compatibility View displays a page as if it was an earlier version of the browser. For instructions on how to switch to this view, see one of these documents on the Microsoft website:
Internet Explorer 9: How to use Compatibility View in Internet Explorer 9<http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/How-to-use-Compatibility-View-in-Internet-Expl orer-9>
Internet Explorer 8: Why are some web pages blank or incorrectly displayed in Internet Explorer<http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/webpages-look-incorrect-in-Internet-Explorer>.
Restart your computer and try opening the PDF again (done, no effect)
Restart your computer, then open the web page again. Restarting clears the computer memory and memory cache. It is surprising how often simply restarting your computer resolves a display issue.
Delete temporary Internet files (Internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome) (done, no effect)
Clear the browser cache (sometimes called 'temporary Internet files') to ensure that you are viewing a fresh version of the page. When you open a web page, the browser saves a temporary copy so that it opens more quickly next time. You want to force the browser to load the entire page directly from the server, rather than displaying a stored copy.
Reset the Display PDF In Browser preference (done, no effect)
    1.      In Reader or Acrobat, right-click the document window, and select Page Display Preferences.
    2.      From the list at left, select Internet.
    3.      Deselect Display PDF In Browser, and then click OK.
    4.      Choose Edit > Preferences > Internet, select Display PDF In Browser, and then click OK.
    5.      Try to open the PDF again from the website.
View PDF in 32-bit version of Internet Explorer or Safari (done, no effect)
Acrobat and Reader are 32-bit applications on Windows. If you try to open a PDF in a 64-bit version of Internet Explorer, the PDF opens in stand-alone Acrobat or Reader, not in Internet Explorer.
Remove DreamFactory (Firefox only) (done, no effect)
If you receive the error "Cannot use Adobe Reader to view PDFs in your web browser," do the following:
    1.      Choose Start > Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open text box, and then click OK to open the Add Or Remove Programs dialog box.
    2.      Select Change Or Remove Programs in the Add Or Remove Programs dialog box, select DreamFactory Runtime for Netscape, Mozilla and Firefox, and click Change/Remove.
    3.      Click OK in the Remove Programs From Your Computer dialog box.

Repair Reader or Acrobat (done, no effect)
Reader or Acrobat could be damaged. Repairing the installation is a quick troubleshooting safeguard.
Repair from within Reader or Acrobat (done, no effect)

  • PDF displays fine except, when downloaded off website

I have created a PDF from InDesign CS6 using the "Smallest File Size" default preset when exporting the pdf. It displays fine on my machine and that of my client and co-workers when emailed directly to them. The pdf is hosted on our clients website as a download link.
When saved from that link, parts of the text in the pdf on some, but not all machines displays as individual boxes, not the font. The font used is Helvetica, Light. The Fonts settings in the export are set to subset fonts when percentage of characters is less that: to 100%
Below you can see a screenshot of how it should display and how it is for those having trouble.
Any help or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    All,
Unless a font is un-embeddable in the PDF file due to restrictions in the font, regardless of the settings in the .joboptions file used for PDF export from InDesign, fonts are always embedded in the resultant PDF. If there is a problem with embedding rights for a font, you do get a message during the export operation.
I assume that no message was generated during the export.
Given that the fonts are embedded in the PDF file, the issues of either use of the Rely on system fonts only in the AdobePDF PostScript Printer Driver Instance options or use of the Use local fonts option in the Acrobat or Reader preferences are totally irrelevant here.
Most likely (i.e., >99% probability), the issue is that the PDF file is being viewed in something other than Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat by those noting the corrupted text display or that prior to those reporting the problem opening the PDF file in Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat, someone has opened and resaved the PDF file using some tool other than Adobe Acrobat. The former rather than the latter is the most likely scenario!
No, there is nothing that Adobe can do about third parties that provide “PDF readers” that don't obey the full PDF specification and/or are buggy. Similar problems show up with color rendering and transparency blending with third party viewers.
To be very clear, Adobe doesn't make any revenue on the free Adobe Reader. We certainly would encourage you to indicate in whatever e-mail of webpage where you provide these PDF files to others to use either the free Adobe Reader (providing the direct URL http://get.adobe.com/reader/) or Adobe Acrobat to view the files. Beyond that, there is not much you can do. We hear of all sorts of excuses why recipients of PDF files refuse to either install or use Adobe software to open, read, and/or print these files. Some are über-Apple loyalists who seem to feel that is heresy not to use software blessed by the late St. Steve the Infallible of Cupertino. Others think that because other PDF viewers are sufficient for PDF files saved from Office documents, and are otherwise very quick to load and display content, they should be OK for all PDF (and then complain to Adobe when they find that this isn't true!).

  • Bonjour Printer installs OK but prints garbage symbols

I have installed Bonjour 1.0.4 on a fresh installation of Windows XP SP2. It installed fine and bonjour already had my printer in its list of drivers (HP DeskJet 815c), so set up was easy (I have my printer plugged into an airport express which my windows machine connects to over the LAN).
My mother's iMac printed to the printer fine over the LAN.
The Windows machine printed garbage instead of a nice simple A4 page of black & white. It prints garbage symbols, one or two lines a page and was going to go for many pages instead of just one.
I never restarted after installing either Bonjour or the printer but I wasn't prompted to.
Any suggestions on what I might do? Would the generic printer drivers be worth a go?

  • PDF file looks fine but prints fuzzy

Hi, I am making music books for a publishing company and we are having an issue with some PDF's. To let you know what we are dealing with I will provide you with some critical info.
I recieve 600 DPI scans as PDF's of books with music in them from our production crew. I take these files and I have to edit the layout of music on the last page so that there is room for our barcode. I insert the barcode and resave the file as a flattened 600 DPI PDF again. Then in Acrobat, I replace the old page, with the new page containing the barcode. The new page looks fine on screen, but when printed out it looks very fuzzy.
I have noticed that this also happens to our barcodes when importing pictures into Quark. I have tried saving the barcodes out as TIFF's and as GIF's (they are high contrast black and white, so GIF's have good quality and very low file size)at 600 DPI. Then we export PDF's from Quark and get the same problem with the fuzzyness.
Does photoshop have some settings for PDF's that will fix this? I am not even sure why it is doing this in the first place. I appologize for the long explanation but would rather have it be clear the first time. Any help you guys can give me would be great!
    -JP

Okay thanks for the input, but when i try to import with images, instead of pages, it says there was a program error and it fails to import. Unfortunately I have to do these in photosjop first, because like I said in the first message, i have to edit the music on the page so that the barcode will fit.
The page is FULL of music, and we cannot simply shrink because that makes it harder for people to read the smaller notes. So I have to move the measures closer together, and sometimes I have to cut out extra space in the measures. If I were to do this in quark I would need to set up several different image boxes and then make sure they would line up properly. It is not very time effecient because I do dozens of these each day.
I have been playing around with the downsampling options and I am getting better results with that. I will post any progress I happen to find.

  • Check Printing - PDF displays fine, Printer prints PS Code

We are using XML Publisher 5.6.2 to build the check printing program.
The template is working fine and we are able to see the checks with
MICR thru the request output ( as PDF ).
Now, we need to print these checks directly to the printer and as per
the metalink note 338990.1, we installed PASTA and XPDF. The output
is now converted to PS and also sent to the printer.
However, the printer prints the PS code instead of interpreting the
PS and printing the check output.
The printer has been setup on unix (AIX 5.3) as a PS printer, however
even if we try the command line lp -dchkprint1 testXML.ps, the code
is printed and not the document.
Can anyone pls provide some insight into either printer setup or any
additional steps required other than PASTA / XPDF and printer setups.
    Thanks & Regards,

  • Booklet converted to .pdf is fine for printing/folding, but for putting pdf file online website - pages in wrong order.  How to fix?

I created a booklet in Publisher and then saved as .pdf file to post on a website.  When printed, pages are ok for folding and printing in the right order, but the .pdf file to look at shows pages out of order.  is there a way to fix this?

    Not with Reader.
You would probably need to rebuild the original document and recreate the pdf.

  • Web pages display OK, but print with garbage characters. I think it's character encoding, but don't know WHICH I should use. Have tried all Western and UTF options. Firefox 3.6.12

I used to only have troubles with headers & footers printing out as garbage characters. I tried changing Character Encoding, now entire pages have garbage characters, even though pages view ok when browsing.

If the pages look OK when you are browsing then it is not a problem with the encoding.<br />
It can be a problem with the font that is used and you can try to disable website fonts and posibly try a few different default fonts to see if that helps.

Using Pages in page layout mode, starting with a blank template, portrait 8.5 x 11.
The composed page looks fine on the screen but shows up completely blank on the printer. Tried PDF, Preview etc. all blank. The content even shows blank in the printer dialog. I'm baffled.

Duh! I have (embarassingly) solved my problem!
Somehow I had left the option "even Pages only" turned on and as there was only a single page I was printing a null set. Unfortunately the print dialog says something like 'using latest settings' and doesn't list them so it took me a while to realize the error. I've only been using a Mac since 1985 after all!

  • Objects preivew fine but print incorrectly--same problem when exporting

I had a PDF that was created in AutoCAD that I then took into Illustrator. I made all of my changes, went to print, and noticed that for some reason random lines would drop off of my printout, even though they appeared fine in the preview menu! And these nonprinting areas change, too--I've made several test prints and they seem to jump around randomly.
I found this artcile (http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/322/322680.html) which led me to discover that in Illustrator if I go to File > Print > Advanced and select High Resolution from the Preset drop down menu my documents print they way I want them to. Great, accept for the fact that I need to export them into another file type for the project I'm working on, which starts the problem all over again. Because no matter what I select--EPS, JPG, PNG--whenever I bring the item into Photoshop and try to print I get the SAME PROBLEM. Only this time there's no helpful print menu setting to navigate.
My document is literally a bunch of black lines and a few squares of color with a 50% opacity. However, I've tried exporting versions with no color in case the opacity was screwing things up, but I keep having the same problem, color or no.
What the heck is going on? I've never had a problem like this before and I can't find a solution anywhere!

I'm at a loss here. I just printed your file from Illustrator and intentionally chose "low resolution" in the print dialoge to see if my printer would duplicate what you describe. Well it didn't, it printed out just fine and that was reduced to fit on 8.5 x 11" paper. Therefore I believe it must be your printer not being able to image those fine lines. My printer is a 600dpi laser by HP, nothing special really but it was able to image all the lines.
Best thing I can suggest therefore is to manually increase the thickness of those lines and hope PS can print them.

  • PDF opens fine, but when I try to page down or scroll down with the mouse, it hangs the file

Pdf files open fine in Acrobat 9 pro.  I am having problems in page down or scroll down on the document.  Only way to close the file is to go to task manager and end the program.  In task manager it shows that there are 2 adobe acrobat files opened and not responding.  What can I check or do about it?  I have tried to disable all plug-ins, but that didn't help.

  • Layers look fine, but printer prints color inverse

Throughout a project using Photoshop CS4, I print out the pages to make a dummy booklet. Once, upon opening the file and wanting to print, the preview window for Epson Stylus Photo R2400 printer showed a color inverse for the entire file. Viewing the images is normal in all ways. I had been making routine nudging, text editing, etc., on various layers and everything looked and behaved fine. It's only in the printing. I looked to see where a correction could be made, but I can't see anything. I tried to have the printer make color adjustments and have Photoshop make them. Nothing seems to help. Suggestions, please!

    Not remotely enough information.
What EXACT version of CS4, is it Photoshop 11.0.2?  Macintosh or Windows?  EXACT version of the OS?  EXACT version of the printer driver?
Can you post screen shots showing your Layers panel and the Photoshop print windows?
