PDF Distiller help

I've never really worked much in Acrobat, so this is a basic question involving distiller application with Acrobat. I often read in posts of files being run through distiller, yet I'm unsure as to why this is and why it's necessary.
I either save pdfs from Illustrator (via a preset) or, in Indesign, I've been exporting pdfs through one of the same presets. I've not had to distill files 9or maybe I don't but should have??!)
- was this a filter that was best used when pdf exporting out of Ill. orID was less stable than it is now?
- is InDesign's built in pdf export capabilities such that a 'distiller' isn't required.
Any info to clarify this part and how and why a file would need to be distilled would satiate my curiosity.
Thanks.
Julian

Indesign's PDF Export is just as good as distilling a postscript file
(or printing to Adobe PDF, which is actually the same thing but automated).
It does come in handy when you need to get PDF out of older programs
that don't have a direct PDF export. For instance, it comes in handy if
you need to get a page from a Powerpoint file into Indesign (print PP to
postscript, distill postscript to PDF, place PDF in Indesign)

  • How to make changes to Adobe PDF (Distiller) printer's printing prefrences programatically?

I want to change the "Default Setting" in the Adobe PDF (Distiller) printer's printing prefrences programatically. How can i do that?

    Why? I don't know :-)
When I compare the documents (single page 'export' vs booklet-spreads 'print booklet') at 800%, the images on the 'export' are crisp. The images on the booklet are seriously pixellated/unreadable.
If it *is* possible to get print-ready, I'd love to!
This is what I'm doing - any help is greatly appreciated.:
    File > Print Booklet.

    Printer: Adobe PDF
    Booklet type: 2-up Saddle Stitch

If you are using Mac, press Apple + I to get the information. It show a table. There is a section call Open with. Change the file with pdf icon to open with indesign. If using PC, just click on the second button on the mouse and open with Indesign.

  • Adobe PDF Link Helper Problem

    Hello,
I am looking for some help because I am out of options. When I open up a pdf through IE, and use the add-on toolbar, none of the buttons can be used. They are all "frozen" except for the zoom function. This is the case for multiple or any documents. I have tried uninstalling IE9 and reverting back to IE8 but no luck. None of the IE are 64 bit, they are all 32 bit. Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.
Here is a bit of background:
OS: Windows 7 (some PC's are 32 bit and others are 64 bit)
    Adobe X 10.1.3
    IE9 and IE8 both 32 bit.
Add ons are enabled for Adobe.
    Thank you.

I do not see either PDF Link Helper or                Adobe Acrobat SharePoint Open Documents Component in 64 bit IE9.  I see them both in the 32 bit version.  Are they both for displaying in a browser?  The root issue I am trying to solve is getting the SharePoint 2010 Acrobat X integration to work,  The original symptom was that a user would check out a pdf  file from a SharePoint library, edit it (using the comment feature in Reader) and then Save or Check In.  Either action would result in a Cannot Access the Network error.  Looking at the HTML traffic in Fiddler showed the error text had nothing to do with the problem, which seemed to be about attribute values.  Anyway, I put this on the back burner for a couple months and returned to it recently.  It now works on my machine in a 32 bit browser.  (ACCEPTABLE RESTRICTION).    My coworker still gets the original error.  I poked around and found the SharePoint Open Documents add-on on my machine and not hers and suspect it has something to do with the difference in behavior.  So I am trying to find out what it is supposed to do and if it really is relevant, how to cause it to be downloaded on other people’s machines.  I have been through the server configuration steps listed in Chapter 13 of the Acrobat Admin Guide.

    Sorry, that's terribly unclear.
Is it crashing with BOTH the script and File > Export?
Is your script using exportFile or asynchronousExportFile?
If it crashes manually, have you tried disabling asynchronous exports per Re: Background PDF export Help?

  • Question on PDF Distiller or Creator for Development

I am looking at creating a program and would like to know a couple of things about the PDF Distiller or Creator API.  First do you have to have Acrobat Pro installed on the server to use the APIs.  I am a little new to the newer versions of Acrobat, but I did have experience with Acrobat 4.01 where I believe that I did need the Pro version to use most of the APIs.  Is there a way to get the Distiller Library alone without the Pro Edition?

    ejuozaitis wrote:

You need Acrobat installed in order to use the APIs in the Acrobat SDK - however, section 2.3 of the Acrobat EULA forbids it from being used on a server, so you cannot use Acrobat SDK applications on a server.

You can buy Distiller Server.  It is a seperate product from Acrobat (which includes Distiller, not Distiller Server) and designed to run on a server as part of an automated workflow.

  • Adobe PDF Link Helper add on IE 8

Hello, we have a client who is having issues with their IE 8 browser - it freezes, crashes and seems to leave behind extract iexplore processes that don't close properly - searching online, I discovered that the add on "Adobe PDF Link Helper" can sometimes cause these type of issues with IE 8 - the client has this add on enabled -  can anyone confirm this? Is there any information on this?

Most of what I've read on this points to other addons as well (Google or Ask toolbar, for instance)... and also shows that it is most prevalent in Vista, which has more bugs than a swamp. I read a few places where a Reset of IE fixed it, others where disabling the addon did the trick. Disabling the link helper can have some adverse consequences, though... primarily being the loss of the ability to open ANY PDFs in the browser.

  • Purpose of Adobe PDF Link Helper

I have an idea of what this browser add-on does.
    AcroPDF.dll
    Adobe PDF Browser Control
AKA  Adobe Acrobat Sharepoint OpenDocuments Component
    AKA PDF Browser Control
Apparently if I disable it PDFs embedded in a page with the <embed> tag fail to function properly.
However, I can't find anywhere accurate documentation on what this add-on below does.
    AcroIEHelperShim.dll
    Adobe PDF Link Helper
AKA Adobe PDF Helper for Internet Explorer
    AKA AcroIEHelperShim Library
IE9 seems to work flawlessly without it.  PDF's still open within the browser with it disabled.  Only if I uncheck Display PDF in Browser in Readers preferences does that cease.
So, can someone (hopefully Adobe) entlighten me on what this add-on does, and why I shouldn't just have all employees have this disabled by default?

  • Missing pdf link helper with IE8x64

I'm using IE8x64 with Adobe Reader installed, I noticed that in the IE8 x64 addons there is no plugin pdf link helper to open the PDF documents in the browser, but it opens web links directly in the program. Is there any way to add the addons in x64 browser?

Thanks for the tip, Bob. This worked! I will need to check and see if all the graphical features came through - there are not very many.
    Cheers!

  • Photoshop to pdf via distiller help please?

I'm trying to convert a photoshop cs4 file to pdf using distiller. When I save as an EPS file, then run it through distiller I get this error:

I tried printing to Adobe PDF in photoshop, and that seems to work but the fonts don't embed, and the publisher requires a distiller produced file.
I could swear that when I did a test on an earlier version of the file it worked just fine, but have tried everything I can think of and can't seem to get it to work now. Perhaps I messed up a setting somewhere or missed a step? I'm new at this so that's entirely possible. Thanks for helping!

I see the issue you are having. A publisher would likely want you to use either the print or press settings file, or supply you one to use. I use one developed by IEEE for their publications. With where you are, if the PDF that you save from PhotoShop is what you are looking for, simply print that one to the Adobe PDF printer and create a new PDF. The fonts should be embedded. It is not clear if the fonts are just not embedded when you print from PhotoShop or they do not come through as fonts (but are simply graphics of the fonts). If they are fonts but just did not embed, then go back and try using the print or press settings. If needed, enter the options for the settings file and be sure that the fonts are set to always embed (and likely as subset fonts). If any fonts are not embedded, change that setting. In my AA7, the standard settings exclude a lot of fonts that are characteristic of Adobe. Those fonts are both embedded in the Press and Print options.
Don't know if I have helped, but it basically what you seem to need. I have given two options that may meet your needs. Bill

  • Printing to adobe pdf (distiller) without confirmation

I have a user who was upgraded to adobe pro 9.11 and was accustomed to it just printing without asking for printer options with his previous version and would like to have it do the same with this version of distiller.

Open the Adobe PDF printer properties and set the options that you generally want to use. There should not generally be a need to change the options unless you are changing them for a particular document. I am not really sure what you mean by Adobe Pro 9.11. Adobe is the company, not a product. I assume you mean Acrobat Pro 9.1.1. It is currently at AA 9.3.4. Maybe an update will help.
The use of Distiller should be transparent if printing to the Adobe PDF printer is done correctly. Thus I am not sure why the question about Distiller.

  • PDF Distiller Error

I have been trying to help my co-worker fix the below distiller error unsuccessfully for the past day.  When printing a pdf with tags and bookmarks, the pdf file gives an error in NotePad and the pdf fails to print.  I've searched some forums and have found other people with similar issues, but no answer as to how to fix this.
The really strange part is that I can print the pdf just fine from my computer, but my co-worker cannot print the same book file to pdf without the error.  I would just print the file for her, but there are several similar ones to print and they all produce the same error in the same spot.
I'm guessing there must be some setting that is different on my computer from hers, although I can't find anything set different in FrameMaker.
If anyone has any suggestions or knows how to fix, that would be awesome!

  • Cannot convert Word to PDF - please help?

Hi I am running Windows XP, Office 2003 and Acrobat Writer 5.
I've had the same setup for five years and have always been able to covert Word documents to PDF like this:
File/print - then I select Acrobat PDF writer from the list of printers, and click "print to file" and it's done.
I've created thousands of PDFs in this way. I've also reformatted my hard drive and re-installed all the same programs again, and always been able to print to PDF.
Last week I again reformatted my hard drive, and re-installed all the same programs that I have always had. I have changed nothing, absolutely nothing about the setup of the computer.
However, NOW when I click file/print from Word, there is no longer Acrobat PDF writer listed!
And so I cannot convert to PDF.
Can anyone please tell me how to get Acrobat back into my list of "printers"?
    Thanks

As I recall, Acrobat Distiller and Acrobat Writer are 2 different print drivers available with AA5. The Writer is not installed by default and is not recommended. It was almost not included with AA5 as I recall. It is no longer included with any distribution. The Acrobat Distiller printer (now renamed as the Adobe PDF printer) is the preferred method of printing with AA5. This latter process creates a PS file and then (using AcroTray running in the background) calls Distiller to complete the conversion from the PS file to the final PDF file. There are several options available under the list of settings. These can be set in the Acrobat Distiller printer properties and generally override the settings in Distiller. You can further make changes for the current printing in the printer properties menu of your current application.
Hope that helps explain what you have found. I still have AA5 running on XP. I also have a newer reader installed because of the limitations of reading some of the newer PDF files with AA5. I try to be careful with how I use Reader and AA5 as they can cause conflicts in what is used to open a PDF, and that is why this configuration is not recommended.

  • Image in indesign file not showing in pdf export - help!

    Hi there -
Exporting my indesign file to a pdf has been fine up til now - all the images and text are showing up fine except for one. The image is one that I edited in Photoshop (CS4) - it's a drop shadow layer. I then placed it in Indesign and fiddled with its opacity. And then I exported. Literally, everything else in this rather substantial file is fine. I increased the opacity of the image to 100% and it did actually show up in the pdf, as it appeared on indesign. Then I tried decreasing the opacity by a minimal amount (to 85% - I'm aiming for around 45%) and it disappeared again. Not sure how to fix this. Thanks for any help
    (in Indesign)    (in the pdf)

Just so you know that Steve isn’t blowing smoke, this is a well known problem with Preview. It works just fine for PDFs out of Word and the like but is simply not up to the task of handling advanced features.
