PDF Download in Preview and Path Names

The menu in Preview changed with the new upgrade to Lion.  When I download a PDF document and go to 'save as' in whatever folder I want, the option to save as is not listed.
Also, I have now go to folder and enter the path name whereas before I never had to enter a path name to find a folder.  What am I doing wrong?  Maybe I don't understand the new changes and upgrade?
Please help.

Thanks leroydouglas!  This worked for me.  Sometimes I feel so 'stupid', but am new to Mac. . .

  • Printing PDF brochure from Preview and only graphics print, no text

Spent 30 minutes on the phone with Lexmark. They said with Windows, you would select "Print as Image" under the advanced printing dialogue. I don't see anything like this in MacOS. If I save the PDF as a PNG, then open the PNG in Preview, it prints fine.

I also had this "no text"-problem with a Lexmark C530dn when printing some PDFs from Preview on 10.5.2. The problematic PDFs all were datasheets and papers I downloaded from sources like SAP. I installed the newest version (2.0) of the C530 printer driver, but it did not help.
Using "Generic Postscript Printer" works, but I loose duplex printing, for example. But printing the documents from Adobe Reader 8.1.2 works, too, and I can use the Lexmark driver and have duplex printing etc.

  • Can't combine two PDF doc in Preview and save under different title.

I regularly used Preview to combine two scanned pages into a single document and them save them under a different name using "Save As..." With Lion I get a unhappy run-around within Versions and can't save the combined document. I wound up placing the two files in folder and zipping it for transmission via Mail. What is the procedure under Lion with Versions, or how do I disable Versions? I can track my documents quite adequately without Versions.

See  post in this thread: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3437156?start=0&tstart=0
You can combine PDFs directly in Preview, but the interface is a little tricksy.
First open the sidebar in Preview.  If your existing PDF has only one page, there will be just that one thumbnail.
The key is to drag new files onto this thumbnail/icon, not below it.  If you drag below it you'll just show two separate docs in the same preview window-- but if you drag on top onto it it will highlight and the two files will combine.  Then you can hit save.

  • I want to *use* very long file and path names!

This is really a plea to Microsoft...
There are several threads about copying or deleting files where the path and/or file name is too long.
Most have explanations of why this problem occurs.  (depending on Windows version and application, the total length [fully qualified file name; i.e. C:\this-dir\that-dir\somefile.xyz] is limited to a maximum of 260 or fewer characters).  This limit
But I *WANT* to be able to use very long file names and paths!
I can understand Microsoft keeping this limit - even while allowing UNICODE paths and file names up to 32k characters - because many existing tools will be unable to handle the longer names.  This would probably yield a lot of questions/flames about
them "breaking the software I've used for years."
But it would be possible to have a system setting to optionally allow the long names.  Since I'd have to manually set it, I'd know I'm potentially breaking existing software.
    In my case, I'm backing up various file directories where some files are very long.  With the server-side additional paths (e.g., client-name\project-name\backup-date\...") I occasionally hit files that can't be copied.  Renaming is not suitable;
sometimes names have to match other file names.
I can zip them, create iso files, use a backup program that creates a blob, put them in a source-control system, etc - but I really don't *want* to do that; it's very convenient to have a direct copy of the directories.  Each of these 'solutions' either
requires extra work (which could be scripted, so ok...) or doesn't work with the work-flow for some reason.
Microsoft, *please* fix this in Windows 8!  (if not before...)   This limit has existed for far too long!
And readers - please don't just repeat what's in the other threads (rename/use subst/map directory/etc) or flame without useful information.  Thanks!

  • Long file and path names

I have a dialog window where users can choose a file, the name and path of which is then displayed. The field where this is displayed isn't big enough to hold the typical long path names found on for example Windows. I was wondering if there is a standardized way of shortening/abbreviating the full path name already written up somewhere? I want my program to be portable ... I looked at how MS Word does it on Windows, and I could write a specialized function to copy that, but then it wouldn't work on other systems that use different path conventions, and I would like to keep the generality if possible. On word they do something like this
    C:/.../final directory/filename

    Kramis wrote:
sure, that much I understand, but I wouldn't know how to create that sort of string from an arbitrary path name of unknown format. In Windows, for example, I could take the first three characters and then ..., but that might not work globally. The questions is about parsing and converting a path name from an arbitrary system.I'd just split the path into its 'final directory name' and 'file name' (with the universal Java path seperator of (/)), and stick '...' in front of it.
So any path such as C:/blah/blah/blah/endpath/filename or /unix/path/blah/blah/endpath/filename would become .../endpath/filename regardless of platform.

  • PDF download into iBooks and use like a book

    All
I have business needs ( and sent email to apple but no reply) covering using PDF downloaded from external site and creating then using in iBook. I want to be able to bookmark/highlight and copy into presentation or notes
Is this just not available yet!!

By the way, it needs to be a 'searchable' PDF. Have to be able to select the word in the PDF. If it isn't, Prizmo does a great job of converting from non-searchable to searchable PDF.

  • Obnoxious file and path names (help!)

How can I construct a regular site, that doesn't involve having my file names being danscool_website.html and having the url name in each file. I hate it.

It would be better to tell people what it is you do want, perhaps with an example.
If you want your file names to be different than the page and site names you yourself set in the Inspector, then you would need to edit the html by hand each time after publishing. If this is really important to you, it may be best to use another web creation app which gives you that option.
I'm not sure what you mean by "having the url name in each file". I've seen some people inflict ugly path names on themselves by naming their site inside the iWeb app the same as their personal domain name. The fix for that is to name the site something short and simple like "1" instead.
If you can provide your url or be more specific, more ideas may be fortcoming.

  • Firefox and PDF download problems -- hanging and failures

I am working in Windows XP and Firefox 12.0.
We post our multi-page newsletter to our website in PDF, and then use a list to send a link to access it. When attempting to download using Firefox, the document will download all or part of the first page, and then hang -- sometimes in perpetuity, and sometimes with infinitesimally slow progress.
It works just fine in Google Chrome.
I tried disabling all of my plug-ins, including Adobe Acrobat (9.5.1.283). I left them all disabled, but re-enabled Adobe. No joy.
I disabled Adobe and tried a straight-up download, then open with my local reader. No joy.
What is going on, and how can I fix it?
My Acrobat 9 Standard is 9.5.1 that I'm using to create the document in the first place.
What can I do to fix MY system to get it to download and, more importantly, what information can I give our members to use so that they can successfully download it?

I personally open PDFs in the stand-alone Adobe Reader rather than in the browser, but everyone has their own preference.
Have you experimented with Firefox's application tab settings?
orange Firefox button ''or'' classic Tools menu > Options > Applications
In the search box on that tab, type pdf and pause for the list to be filtered. You should be able to toggle between viewing the PDF in the browser or launching it externally. I have mine set to "Always Ask."
Generally speaking, when you have a problem with one particular site, a good "first thing to try" is clearing your Firefox cache and deleting your saved cookies for the site.
    1. Clear Firefox's Cache
orange Firefox button ''or'' Tools menu > Options > Advanced
On the Network mini-tab > Offline Storage : "Clear Now"
    2. If needed, delete the site's cookies here
While viewing a page on the site, right-click and choose View Page Info > Security > "View Cookies"
If you host the PDFs on a site you can't actually visit, access the View Cookies dialog from this page and change the host name at the top of the box to the correct host name to access the relevant cookies.
Then try downloading again. Does that help?

  • Inconsistencies Printing pdf's in preview and adobe reader

Hey, we have been having a lot of trouble recently printing pdf's, the quality varies depending on the app we print with.
Preview seems to give the best results where as Adobe Reader seems to make text pixelated as tho there is no anti-aliasing going on.
We would switch to using Preview only in some cases we are finding it dos not display the pdf's correctly e.g. there are random lines draw round text and things like that!
Any help would be great, we are using an OKI C5600 if that is any help.

Select a PDF file in a Finder window and click the More Info button; the pop-up information will let you specify the app it should be opened with, and allow you to click "change all" to use the same app for other files of the same type.

  • Unicode file and path names...

How does SleepyCat handle Unicode file names and directory paths?
    Are there any coding examples?
    Thanks

We have support for Unicode using UTF-8 encodings.
What platform(s) do your applications need to run on? Would Windows support for UTF-8 be sufficient?

  • Automatic name changes and file and path name limitation when storing files

Dear all I am using Airport Extrem with an attached disc and experience following:
    1) Names get changed. Second part of file name gets replaced with some hex numbering
    2) Get the error message from time to time that file can't be stored on the Airport Extrem attached disc and that the file name is too long.
    Any idea.

I've got the same problem with seagate 750 GB drive - Mac OS Extended (Journaled) - over fast ethernet (first gen) AEBS(n)
P.S.- sometimes the folder names get corrected automaticaly, and sometimes folders get duplicated (with different corrupted hex-like name endings) and if I delete one of them, they all vanishes.

  • Preview and safari do not display images in a pdf, where as chrome will. How do I fix this?

I'm on the newest OS X Yosemite and I have an issue with viewing pdfs in both preview and safari. The figures show up fine from Chrome. This also leads to the issue of when I try to print off the pdf. The images do not appear in the printed version.
    Safari/ Preview:
    Chrome:

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print or save PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to do so by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar should appear under the cursor. Click the printer or disk icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
              Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
              Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
              Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others—I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • How do I hide the file names/path names of embedded images in a PDF document?

I created a PDF document from a Word document, and the problem is that the PDF document shows the file names and path names for all of the embedded images in the PDF document. I don't want that information displayed. I don't want to send the PDF out to clients and have them read the names I've assigned to those images, plus it looks messy. And I've lost many of the original image files so they only exist in the Word document, thus I can't go back and rename them. I searched the internet for an answer but I couldn't find one anywhere.

When you create a tagged (accessible) PDF file from Word, placed bitmap images will use their filename as the "ALT text" if you don't define something else for the text to say, because an image without any ALT text is a failure against the accessibility standards. You can't change that default action, so you should put your own meaningful text into the ALT field for each image - which is what you should be doing anyway if the PDF is standards-compliant.
You can can set the text in Word, but it depends on your version as to where the dialogs are - Google for it - or you can change/delete it in Acrobat using the tags navigation pane on the left side of the window (right-click the sidebar if it's not visible). Drill down through the tags structure to find the "<Figure>" tag you want to change, right-click and choose Properties, then put something in the "Alternative text" field. This process isn't something you can easily automate, but if you don't need tags at all, you can save without tags (or print to PDF).

  • My add-on's aren't working since upgrading...are their pdf download and screengrab updates available anywhere?

My 'pdf download' by Nitro and the Screengrab! 0.96.3 is incompatible with FireFox 7.0.1.
Are there other add-on's that will perform these functions that are compatible with the updated version of FF, or will I need to uninstall the latest FF update in order to continue using these features?
Also, Java Console is now disabled and nothing compatible for it either, updates are unavailable....etc.

1.) Locate "C:/Windows/System32/Drivers/etc/hosts". Copy the "hosts" file onto your desktop as a backup if any errors may occur during the process.
2.) As an administrator, open the "hosts" file inside "etc" folder with Notepad and erase the last lines related to gs-apple that looks like this:
    "#127.0.0.1 gs·apple·com"
3.) Restart iTunes if opened and connect your device after it is in DFU mode.
4.) Casually do a restore like normal, and you're done.
5.) After restore is completed, replace the "hosts" file inside the "etc" folder with the backup you've copied onto your Desktop to prevent possible future errors. Hope this works!
