PDF export dropping bleed

Real quickly, I have my pdf export settings in PageMaker 7.0.1a to add .5 inches to magazine trim/document setup page size. If I place a full page ad with bleed in eps format, the resulting pdf image displays correctly within the full bleed size. But if I place the full page ad as tiff, then I am left with .25 inches of white space around the image. It is annoying and I can't even guess where the problem lies. Any sugeestions? Is this most likely native to PageMaker or distiller settings, pdf printer style, etc....? HELP!

OK, in all humility, i really can't explain why i can run it and others can't. i don't have a solid explanation. some in this forum would call it 'luck', but being the spiritual person that i am, i prefer something more along the lines of being highly favored. a few quick suggestions are as follows: run the install.exe as 'administrator', or even use compatibility settings set for XP sp3. other suggestions, install older software in safe mode -- this particular 'trick' worked for me on another XP OS machine after what i thought was a 'succesful' install ended up not so successful (program would continually crash on startup) in other words, idk. my suggestions, be persistent in your attempts and try something different each time. GOOD 'LUCK' to all!

FormCentral PDF export: Drop-Down Menu does not print when no choice is made
I want to be able to print a blank form for the older clients who cannot use a computer. Form has a few drop-down menus and they only appear on the print out if an option is selected. The form was created on FormCentral. Can anybody help?
Sorry if i'm a noob, not much experience in creating PDF forms yet.
    Thanks for your help,
    Yon

    Hi Perry
I am using the trial version of Adobe Acrobat and am using the provided FormCentral software to create the form. I find it very limited, but easier to learn. I am creating a financial needs analyser.
The section of the drop down menu is a selection from 1-5 (rating of importance for financial goals). I want to print out the questions and the empty boxes for people to fill them in by hand (e.g write 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5). When I leave a blank choice, no box is printed out. I write the questions in formatted text and leave the text/caption for the drop-down as blank, as it is difficult to set the margins correctly so various elements align (I pretty much have to estimate).
As said before, I may have been missing a massive part of the software, but I haven't used any training - just going by instinct so far.
Do you know if I can do anything about it?
    Thanks,
    Yon

  • Single letters dropping out in PDFs exported from Indesign CS

We are having font issues in some of our magazine's advertisements which proved very costly last month. First let me describe the work flow.
We designed an ad in Indesign CS then exported it using the press setting in Indesign's PDF export option. Here the ad looked and printed fine. The ad was then placed in another Indesign file which was for the layout of one of our magazines. Here the ad still looked fine on screen and when printed out from Indesign. This next step is where the font issue occurs.
When we export the the final magazine's press ready Indesign file, through the PDF press setting in Indesign again, single letters in these problem ads drop out. For example all of the Ds' in the entire ad will be missing. So a sentence in the ad that read "Dirt is Dark" will read " irt is  ark."
I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem occur and if they have a solution. The only thing I can think of is in the compression settings there is an option to compress text and line art. We are going to try to uncheck that box to see if it fixes the problem.
    Thank you for you help,
    Javin.

I realized, of course, that it does make a difference. If you don't have the fonts on your system, a frequent issue with incoming ads, you couldn't embed the full font at all. You need to be sure that ads generated in CS have fully embedded fonts, not subsets, or risk dropouts. It will only happen when more than one ad uses the same font, but different glyphs.

  • Script that worked in CS does not work in CS4 - multiple open page, print , pdf export and close

I had a script that worked great for me in Indesign CS. But now does not work in CS4. Anyone knows what needs to be done to make it work again ?
When I drop folder with indesign files on top of this script:
    1. opens first page
    2. turns specific layer on
    3. prints using preset
    4. exports using preset
    5. close without saving
    6. next page
Anyone who can give me solution or idea how this should work is greatly appreciated.
    on open sourceFolders
    repeat with sourceFolder in sourceFolders
    tell application "Finder"
    try
-- If you would like to include subfolders, you say - every file of entire contents of folder…
set idFiles to (every file of folder sourceFolder whose file type is "IDd5") as alias list
on error -- work around bug if there is only one file
set idFiles to (every file of folder sourceFolder whose file type is "IDd5") as alias as list
    end try
    end tell
if idFiles is not {} then
    tell application "Adobe InDesign CS4"
set user interaction level to never interact
repeat with i from 1 to count of idFiles
    open item i of idFiles
    tell document 1
    try
set visible of layer "ImagesTag_Layer" to true
    end try
set myPreset to "letter size" -- name of print style to use
    with timeout of 700 seconds
print using myPreset without print dialog
    end timeout
set myPreset1 to "pdf preset name" -- name of pdf export style to use
set myName to the name -- name includes .indd should remove at some point
    with timeout of 700 seconds
export format PDF type to "users:temp:Desktop:pdf:" & myName & ".pdf" using myPreset1 without showing options -- set path here format ComputerName:Folder1:Folder2:......:FileName.pdf
    end timeout
    close without saving
    end tell
    end repeat
set user interaction level to interact with all
    end tell
    end if
return 10 -- try again in 10 seconds
    end repeat
    end open

(Disclaimer: me not an AS guy!)
First thing I noticed is the interaction level is set off. If you comment out this line
set user interaction level to never interact
you might be able to pinpoint the exact error -- ID will display a standard "failed" dialog, hopefully showing the line that it fails on.
A quick question: the script assumes two presets in your InDesign: one for print ("letter size") and one for PDFs ("pdf preset name"):
set myPreset to "letter size" -- name of print style to use
set myPreset1 to "pdf preset name" -- name of pdf export style to use
Do these actually exist in your CS4, with the same (non)capitalization and spaces?

  • How to insert a pdf export button in a module

    Hi,
I would propose a way for my students to realize easily a pdf export of one screen. The goal is that students save a file with a drag and drop exercice in order to re-use after.
    So, I tried :
    - Use a shape and execute Javascript, window.print(). I had think to say students to use pdf export instead of print. In my case, print works only in html5. In flash, only the background is displaying.
    - Use the print widget of captivate. It works but it's hard to use it. Student needs to edit properties to choose layout / paper size. Otherwise, some part of the screen are not displaying.
So I'm looking a solution to insert a pdf export button. Idealy a student clicks up the button and screen will be export in pdf format.  I try this wdiget (http://captivatedev.com/2012/07/25/adobe-captivate-6-x-widget-dynamic-pdf-export/) but we can export only variables.
Anyone has a good idea to share ?
    Best regards.
    Clément

Thank you Pat. The thing is that i can´t upload any document to the web server because it belongs to "Jimdo". They give the option with a kind of Plugin and the Pdf comes directly from your browser to be download from the visitors, but it look ugly. That´s why I inserted a link to go to another page (different server) where I can upload documents. I think a need someone who know Jimdo.
    Thank you

  • How do I set a PDF Export Preset to force a minimum line weight on output?

How do I set a PDF Export Preset to force a minimum line weight on output?  I'm currently using one that came from a printer that works great - but I can't seem to find the option when creating one myself.  I have some placed Illustrator line art that is built with .25 line thickness and when I have it placed at 20% scale the lines are too thin to see in the PDF output.

There is absolutely no way to force minimum line widths within InDesign itself, certainly not as part of the PDF export process!! And even one writes a script to go through every object within an InDesign document and both validate and fix line widths less than some particular threshold, such a script would be useless against placed artwork, the contents of which are not available for manual or programmatic inspection within InDesign.
Note that one should be exceptionally careful in “fixing” hairlines, especially if you are placing vector artwork at very low magnification. It may actually be OK to let certain lines drop out. After a fixup on some content, you could end up with a messy mass of lines.

  • Fonts Not Embedding Consistently with PDF Export - Inconsistent Fix and Unknown Cause

I have had ongoing problems with PDF export from FrameMaker. Sometimes the correct fonts do not embed in the PDF and Times New Roman is substituted. The problem appears and disappears and is causing me a lot of lost time and frustration.
I am running FrameMaker 9.0 fully patched on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. I have seen people complain about this issue and am familiar with the suggested fixes. However, the exact cause and solution eludes me because the problem continues to recur and I am only able to recover with guesswork and workarounds.
    Initially I did the following:
    ACROBAT PDF SETTINGS
    - In the printer properties for Adobe PDF settings I turned off the option "Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts."
    ACROBAT DISTILLER SETTING
Under "Font" Settings I changed the following:
    - Under "Settings/Font Locations" I added the font folder for Technical Communication Suite 2.0 and made sure all the fonts existed there and in the Windows default font directory.
    - Under "Settings/Edit Adobe PDF Setting/Fonts" I changed the following options:
                - Selected "Embed all fonts"
                - Under "Embedding" chose "Always Embed" for the target fonts.
I tweaked these settings for hours and got no results. Then I rebooted and the problem had magically disappeared. I fixed the issue in the same way on another machine and the results were permanent and I was just happy to finally have it fixed, But this time it didn't last.
I should note that upon reboot, when I used the stock "PDF Job Options," the correct fonts still embedded, leading me to believe that the fix had nothing to do with the changes I made to Distiller settings.
After reboot I generated PDFs with the correct fonts embedded. Then I shut down FM, but left the system running. The next morning I opened FM again and the same problem occurred.
So I rebooted again -- and the problem disappeared again. I therefore thought maybe the issue fixes on reboot but recurs when you shut down FM and reopen. So I shut down FM again and reopened, but it is still working fine for the moment.
I verified that the Adobe PDF settings under "Printers & Devices" that I turned off (Rely on system fonts only; do not use documents fonts) remained correctly unchecked through all these changes.
I would really like to know why this happens so I can resolve it permanently and avoid more lost time.
    Thanks in advance,
    Douglas

The common theme I'm seeing here is that the setting edits you make in
Distiller through the FM "Save As PDF" option don't seem to take effect.
Do you know if that is true or could you elaborate on the notorious nature
    of this method for me?
    >
There are too many potential and transient problems to list. The only thing
I can say is that I've been an active member of the FrameUsers listserv
    (http://lists.frameusers.com/mailman/listinfo/framers) since FM version 6.0,
circa 2001, and probably 95% of the PDF problems reported there have been
fixed simply by using print to Adobe PDF (or to Acrobat Distiller in older
PDF versions), instead of using Save as PDF. Common advice there has always
been to avoid Save as PDF and even some Adobe employees have recommended
against using it. It doesn't matter which FM version.
The once-busy FrameUsers listserve has been fading away, recently, as this
new Adobe forum software allows reading via e-mail, and attachment of
screenshots.  Even if you look around on this forum now, you'll probably
find that there are two main fixes for issues with PDF. One is NOT using
Save as PDF, which seems to fix a whole bunch of issues. The other is the
use of a Windows hotfix to squash a Windows OS bug that causes dropped
    characters in PDFs.
In the rare instances that someone has issues with printing to PDF, they are
almost always related to errors in settings. Or occasionally someone can't
embed fonts because they are trying to the embed the virtual fonts that come
with their printer driver instead of fonts that have actually been installed
on their computer. (The fonts are hard-wired on their printer, so the system
can use them but not embed them.)

  • PDF exported from InDesign missing background when opened in Illustrator

Hello, I am having a bit of a frustrating problem.
I'm working on graphics for a large project, and I have to get some of my files from InDesign into Illustrator (they are both CS5) for our printer.
I would have normally designed them in Illustrator but ALL my graphics are in InDesign and we just found out once we started on production that he needs AI and needs our trim path set up for our irregular shapes.
For MOST of the documents, its been pretty easy (exporting to PDF > opening in illustrator and making a cut path > saving as AI) however I have this one file that is making me lose my mind.
When I export it as PDF, it opens perfectly and looks normal in acrobat, and I also check it out in preview as well. The background shows up and everything. However when I open the PDF in illustrator it completely loses the background. I noticed it doing this before for a couple graphics, but I assumed that was because they had gradients drop shadows and transparencies and all that. This file has nothing weird except for a gradient grey background.
Help? I'm including some screenshots of whats happening in the hopes that you guys can help solve it.
So here we have me saving it, then opening it in Acrobat to check stuff out.
Now here is what happens when I open it in Illustrator:

Hi, Brie. I have been running into this issue for quite some time now. I also received the same response as you did. "Stop opening exported PDFs in Illustrator." This is an unsatisfactory answer for someone that works in the large format print industry that needs to preflight directly in the Illustrator program. I've done a ton of research and have been racking my brain for the last 2 years and have finally found sufficient workarounds for this issue. The downfall with these workarounds: all spot colors located in the gradients will convert to CMYK mixes. I'm still researching to see if there is a way to keep spot colors intact in these areas.
A little back story: InDesign is converting the gradients into something called NChannel. It enables more accurate handling of color blending by including additional dot gain and color mixing info. Both InDesign and Acrobat have the ability to display these elements whereas Illustrator, from what I’m finding, does not. Which is why we’re seeing gradient elements drop out when opened in Illustrator.
    Workaround for CMYK Gradients
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: DeviceCMYK
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select DeviceCMYK in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Workaround for 1 Spot Color in Gradients (Converts Spot Color located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
Open PDF exported from INDD in Acrobat
Go to Tools > Print Production > Convert Colors
Object Type: Smooth Shade (this tells Acrobat to hone in on Gradients only)
    Color Type: Spot Color
Check Embed next to Conversion Profile (should be SWOP)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the Spot that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Workaround for 2 Spot Colors in Gradients (Converts Spot Colors located in Gradient to CMYK – all other Spots stay intact)
Expand Document Colors on the right and Select the DeviceN spot color that is located in the Gradient in Color Spaces then click ok
    Save the PDF
Please try this and let me know if you have any questions! I'm always looking for new problems to solve! Good luck!

  • PDF not showing bleed

Trying to make a pdf with bleeds but my bleeds are not showing up, only crop marks. I'm using distiller for a postscript file to press quality pdf

Has nothing to do with printing.
Please post screenshots of the marks and bleeds pane of the PDF Export as well as your document set up making sure that the more info (bleed and slug) are shown.
Note that you must post them using the web interface, you can’t attach them to emails.

  • Incorrect PDF exports in ID CS5.5 with X-1a standard...

I'm tasked with troubleshooting technical problems for a group of 20 designers. I've been a designer myself, but not for some time now. However, as a tech support person I deal with CS problems daily, so I'm still pretty versed with the apps. Just to let you know.
I've installed brand new Mac Pros (12-core Xeon 2.66, 18GB RAM, 1TB mirror, running 10.6.8 v1.1) this week in the department. The old machines had CS4, and had been relatively problem-free, or at least the designers had learned its quirks and had workarounds in place. The old Macs also used Extensis UTC 2, which we upgraded on the new systems to UTC 3.0.1. The machines were fresh installs, but we ran Migration Assistant to pull over the user accounts and settings (but left behind the Applications).
The first issue we're having has to do with type objects floating around on the page when documents are exported to PDF using X-1a:2001 or 2003, also X-3. If the designer switches to straight High Quality Print, no standards, then the type stays in place. At least we have a workaround for that, but I'm just wondering if this is a bug others are seeing. The type block will shift right about three inches, down an inch in most examples people have brought to me, BUT I've also seen it shift further down; it's semi-random, but often it's over 3", down 1".
As an FYI, we also had a weird issue where a grayscale PSD clipped file was placed on a page, and would cause half of the rest of the objects not to export to PDF (though JPEG exports were OK). We found that the designer had used Effects on the image from within ID, and if she used any effect which went INSIDE the clipping path, objects dropped out on the export (this includes Inner Shadow, Inner Glow and Emboss). Just thought I'd post that for someone desperately searching for PDF NOT PRINTING ALL OBJECTS IN INDESIGN CS5.5.
So, any help with the X-1a export would be appreciated, as this company's primary printer asks for this standard to be used.
    Thanks,
    Dan

    Dan,
in that case you can print to PostScript and use Distiller to get PDF/X-1a files instead of using PDF export.
You might know how to do that, but just in case you don't:

  • What PDF export settings to use for highest possible resolution printing?

I use indesign to create a roughly 68-page marketing booklet. The document is landscape and setup to print on 8.5" x 11" as a landscape book with facing-pages. I upload a PDF to a professional printing company to print a full bleed booklet. The book usually includes roughly 15, full-page, high resolution images as well as numerous other high resolution images throughout so it is important that the resolution is as high as possible and the images come out clean when printed.
On my old computer, I had a custom PDF export preset that I used to produced hi-res, print quality pdf's that were approximately 528MB in size.  I recently got a new computer and I lost that old Preset...  Now, when I use the "high quality print" default setting, the file size is about 74MB, much lower than what the documents used to be. I have played around with some of the settings, but I still cannot get the files to come out near as large as they used to be.
Is this an Indesign doument setup issue, or an export issue?  What settings should I use in order to produce the largest, highest-quality, highest-resolution PDF possible?
Thanks for an input and guidance!

The size in mb is pretty much irrelevant and is going to vary with the number of pages and the type and quantity of graphical content.
The HQ Print preset downsamples  raster art to 300 ppi if it's over 450, and uses jpeg compression to reduce file size. This is usually more than adequate for commercial printing. For fine art printed at a 200 lpi screen you might want to change the downsampling to 350 or 400 ppi and use zip compression (lossless) or no compression at all. I suspect your custom preset used no compression, and might not even have downsampled, but there's no advantage to sending more image data than the RIP needs to process the image.

  • PDF export issue - ID CS4 update bug?

When exporting a book I have been using continuously over 1 year - both under CS3 and CS4 - suddenly the left master page items are not visible in the resulting PDF file.
These items are overlapping the spine on facing master pages, but this has never caused a problem before. Now, even after resizing these objects to the actual page size, they do not show in the PDF.
I found one workaround though. When exporting the pages with the document bleed, they are visible in the PDF even if the master page items are overlapping the spine in the bleed area. Afterwards I have to crop the resulting PDF by the bleed.
Is it a bug or is there a fix to this issue?

I've redrawn it all and placed in new images and now its starting to do weird stuff like make the images disappear as well as making part of the transparency 20% (as set by me) but then making another section of it 100%.(See below - top one is correct, bottom is incorrect). I would agree with you that it may just be an issue with the file, except its happening across multiple computers. There's not really any chance its a dud version of CS5 is there? Its all legit so no real reason why it wouldn't be.
Override Master Pages fixes it, but this is pretty disappointing if I need to have to do this every single time as it makes the master pages on half useful.
We do have CS3 actually and I opened it in that, exported it as a .inx but same issue with elements missing - the stroke around the outside disappeared.
Could it be anything to do with bringing across elements from Illustrator? Although the top element is appearing fine, and the bottom transparent element is a copied item so shouldn't be an issue. And the image disappearing - there's no real reason for that.

  • Remove ALL Images from PDF Export?

I'd like to remove ALL images from a PDF export (Indesign CS6), with the intention of having the smallest file size possible for review. All the images are Photoshop PSDs.
I have created a PDF Preset (PDF 1.7) that omits EPS, PDF and Bitmap.
That covers any PSDs that contain opaque backgrounds, i.e. are considered to be non-transparent. However, any PSDs that do NOT contain such backgrounds still appear in the exported PDF. I assume they are NOT considered to be Bitmaps?!?
I've gone for maximal compression of images (in the Preset) also just to see how small I can get the file, but it's still over a meg, and I'd really like even smaller. I live in a rural part of England where net access is painfully slow, and even a few meg of data takes far too long to upload, not to mention the constant drop-outs. Consider further that my document is likely to grow by several orders of magnitude and hopefully you can see why I'd like to sort this issue out as soon as possible.
I've not done any scripting but assume it would be trivial to hide images with a script. However, I'm not sure how such a script might know how to make visible only the images that were previously hidden by the script. Obviously I would not wish to unhide images that must stay hidden. Maybe some form of image/object tagging, if that's even possible in this product, i.e. tag them "temp hide" on first pass of the script, and so forth.
    Any suggestions much appreciated.
    Regards,
    James

@James – to mark the container frames of the nonprinting images by a fill color, you could add the following lines of code in the for loop:
    allGraphicsArray[n].nonprinting = true;
//The parent of the graphic is the container that holds it.
//We could use it to fill it with a tint of e.g. 20% of black:
    allGraphicsArray[n].parent.fillColor = "Black";
    allGraphicsArray[n].parent.fillTint = 20;
But this approach will add a new problem for images, that only use a portion of the holding graphic frame. Or are only partly visible due to a clipping path or a clipping mask or totally transparent areas due to transparent pixels.
Already colored backgrounds will be recolored…
@Sandee – I see the advantage of the PostScript to Distiller way in this situation, but there are two disadvantages:
    1. Live transparency will be flattened (could be no issue in this use case, but you never know).
    2. The gray area with the big X will be applied also to parts of the images where no pixels are present (transparent pixels in PhotoShop or TIFF files).
To work around all these issues we need a more complex script that is building a  path object around the transparent parts of an image or using an applied clipping path for that purpose and fill that with a gray tint (and maybe with an X).
Here some screen shots to illustrate the problems (with or without using PostScript/Distiller):
    1. Original set up:
One placed PhotoShop file with transparency stacked upon the text frame.
The image inside its holding frame is selected.
The visibility of one of its layers depicting a second chair on the left side is switched off.
    2. The same setup in a different view:
    3. After running the script with the two additional lines of code:
Using the PostScript method would do nearly the same plus adding a cross using the  area of the selected image.

  • Import and Update PDF Export Preset

    Hey there again!
I'm now trying to define a preset for the PDF Export process... it's based on the "High Quality Print" (from the Adobe PDF Preset list), and then I want to change "one or two" parameters.
Changing one or two parameters is easy, I've been doing that already, but since most of them are already defined by the "High Quality Print" Preset, my idea was:
    Load the "High Quality Preset"
And after that change the required parameters
And then export to PDF of course!
    How can this be done?
    Many thanks!!
    Best regards.

@m8r-vrpa5v – I think, it is not best practice to change a default PDF Export Preset. Instead I would add a new preset based on the default one.
When looking at your code you have to use the right syntax.
Every time you assign a value to a property you have to use the right object that property belongs to.
Some values are only functional, if some other property is set (this goes especially for the bleed settings).
    Do not write:
    bleedTop='0mm';
ExtendScript cannot know by itself where this property and its value should be assigned to what object.
    Right syntax would be:
    myPDFExportPreset.bleedTop='0mm';
Or (I used no meassurement units, the value 0 does not require this):
    myPDFExportPreset.properties = {
    useDocumentBleedWithPDF : true,
    bleedTop : 0 ,
    bleedBottom : 0 ,
    bleedInside : 0 ,
    bleedOutside : 0
    Hi Uwe,
Thanks for your remark... that was my mistake when using copy paste.
I was reusing code from another script where I used the WITH function, in here I was using a different structure and I didn't correct this.
But thanks again for the remark!

  • PDF Export Crash (follow-up)

There was a thread a while back titled "PDF Export Crash." Because it was archived, I was unable to post my findings there. This issue recently became front and center for me within the last 24 hours. For those unaware, I am referring to an issue where Pages crashes every single time you try to export to PDF on certain documents (even through the print dialog). Using a different computer only produces the same results!
After some investigation and testing, I was able to discover that the presence of footnotes was directly tied to the problem. Once removed, seamless exporting followed. However, not all footnotes were responsible. I found the third page of my document, when isolated, exported just fine along with its footnote; while the fourth page of my document, when isolated, did not export (crashed). Footnote along are there NOT directly responsible.
Although I am still unable to determine the exact problem, I would like to make these observations available along with another workaround I discovered. It is a little tedious, but absolutely guaranteed to work for someone who is desparate.
    1. Copy and paste your entire document into TextEdit.
    2. Create a new blank Pages document and past it back in.
    3. Manually add your footnote back in one at a time.
    4. Make any minor formatting corrections from the transfer.
After using this method to recreate the original document, while visibly symmetrical, the recreation process somehow eliminated the "quirks" that were causing Pages to crash during a PDF export.
If anyone is still having this issue, I'd be interested to hear from you. Especially if you have discovered exactly what causes certain footnotes to disrupt the PDF export process.
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

In order to isolate the problem as much as possible, you may want to delete parts of the document, step by step, and see how small it can be and still crash.
If you are lucky, that may tell us exactly what causes the crash.
If you are unlucky, the reason is an exceptional corruption of the document, which happened some time in the past, and which cannot be isolated this way.
    Good luck!
