Pdf export indesign - size options?

Hey guys,
I could not find anything in the internet, I hope someone here can help me.
I have a document in Indesign that has a size of Din A4 and needs to be printed later on.
If I export it with best settings it has a size of 20 MB, if I do it with lowest settings only
1,2 MB but it gets pixelized than.
Can I export it with best settings (at least 300ppi for printing) and not pixelized? I'm
running CS5 and Acrobat Pro 9.5.1 on my Mac.

Why do you think that file size of 20 MB is not "good"? Is there some restriction on file size where you are going to print it?
The term, by the way, is not 'pixelized' but 'downsampled'. Downsampling does exactly what you are seeing: it makes the file smaller by cutting down the size of its largest parts: images. The only way to make an image smaller is to downsample.

No, one rules out the other.

You don't have to choose either of these extremes. There are lots of individual settings to fiddle with, so I suggest you go over all of them and manually adjust until the images downsample too much for your taste, or you have a file size you can live with.
And in doing so, always remember that you are JUDGING FROM YOUR SCREEN. A printed version is usually much sharper than what you can see on screen, so even if you think "well that ain't too bad", the printed version might look worse than you expected.

InDesgin 6 PDF Export, File size weirdness

ive been exporting Docs from inDesign CS5 for ages
simple enough - hi quality print, no downsampling, jpeg-hi quality,
PDF usually comes out about 4MB
So i open the same files in inDesign 6
set my PDF export to above settings, but my PDFs are 14MB
ive been tweaking CS6 PDF export settings for ages now.
its always too big unless i go way overboard with downsampling
then i get a small (but crappy) PDF
any help advice appreciated....

Quite a bit of work has been done for InDesign 8 (CS6) to further optimize the generated PDF compared with earlier versions of InDesign, especially if you have graphics on master pages.

Unless we have the actual sample files to look at, we can't speculate as to the anomalies you see. It isn't our experience and we don't know what could be causing what you are seeing as files 350% larger than previously generated. No, we didn't have any JPEG compression change that would account for this assuming you used the exact same JPEG (Automatic) settings.

Bloated PDF Export File Size

I just exported a 2 page file that contained 3 graphics and
text. The file was an 493K in size and could not be made any
smaller using Adobe Pro 7.0. This is amazingly large since the old
Buzzword graphic PDF output was 393K. I then exported the file as a
Word document and then printed a PDF output using Adobe Pro 7.0 and
the file was only 95K.
This new PDF export feature is a disappointment. It produces
way larger file sizes than any PDF produced by an Adobe desktop
application. Why is it so inefficient?

Sorry to hear about your disappointment about this feature.
This problem is known and I think Adobe/Buzzword team would be
improving it in future releases (though I don't know their
time-line or feature priority). This was the first cut
implementation of this feature - and nobody knew what folks would
want to see improved first. I guess now we know :).
What would most likely be the problem: Fonts embedded inside
the PDF are subset-embedded but not fully optimized and that would
have led to big size. Fonts are difficult beasts to tame, and I am
sure they would be tamed someday.

Export PDF from InDesign -- SIze mismatch

We are facing a strange problem of like size mismatch in INDD and Exported PDF. Say I have a INDD document of height 5.456 inch and 6.758 inch and when we are exporting it to PDF with High Quality Print then PDF size will show 5.45 inch x 6.75 inch.
Any preference is required to get the exact size, I know this size is ignorable but we have a system in place which requires exact size in PDF.

But if you open the Crop Pages, in Acrobat, from the Pages Navigation Panel, it will show the size as 5.456 x 6.758

CR XI R2 pdf export font size issue

Exporting a report to PDF using Crystal XI R2 seems to be reducing the size of the fonts. When printing directly from CR and exporting to PDF and printing from the PDF viewer the font sizes are smaller. Any ideas on what I can do to correct the problem?

Symptom
In Crystal Reports XI and Crystal Reports XI Release 2 the font shrinks by approximately 10% when a report is exported to Adobe Acrobat Format (PDF).
Cause
This behavior is due to the way Windows and UNIX, and therefore Crystal Reports, handles low point size fonts on a low-resolution screen. Text layout in the absence of a printer driver will consistently be rendered differently than in PDF.
Crystal Reports currently shrinks the font by 10% to prevent any truncation this difference may cause.
Resolution
CAUTION The following resolution involves editing the registry. Using the Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall the Microsoft Windows operating system. Use the Registry Editor at your own risk. To resolve the behavior
Set the resolution of the default printer of the local computer experiencing the issue to 1200 DPI. Most printers have a default setting of 600 DPI.

CRXIr2 - PDF Export, Font size issue

I know this is covered in other threads, however I've tried the registry hacks suggested, and it doesn't work.
I have the following keys in place

With the ForceLargerFonts DWORD set to 1
I have restarted ISS, rebooted server and still nothing.
By way of CR libraries, I have run the CRXIr2 Developer install, with just the .NET components selected to get the libraries on to the server (not the best way I know).
Any idea why my fonts are still small on print out? The reg hacks worked just fine on my last server, albeit with Crystal 10.

Beware 10.5.5 + Openoffice & PDF export! - downgrade option needed

First symptoms were blank or garbled menus, followed by ATSServer CPU hogging. Even having to turn off Airport connections to get at Finder before out of control CPU.
Multiple Hostile Restarts [ on!off ] later, and failed attempts to back up to the 10.5.4 dmg installer I had to boot the Time Machine back to Sept. 17...
Apple Dev Boys and Girls: I have enjoyed my MacBook experience, trouble free for most of this year - How about a Time Machine Option to UNDO hostile updates?

It's definitively not only a problem of OpenOffice PDFs. Have hundreds of PDFs generated with ReadIris OCR. They worked perfectly until 10.5.5 was installed.
When the finder generates the preview icons of the PDFs already at this timepoint the complete system hangs. If you have some PDFs on your desktop and the finder starts up the system hangs.
Had to start into single user mode and to move these PDFs from my desktop to get back a responsive finder. Incredible.
From within Acrobat Reader it is possible to open all these PDFs without any trouble - so this shows that the problem is not caused by the PDFs itself.
I checked if downgrading 10.5.0 will solve my problems - and indeed everything worked again.
To verify that it is really the update to 10.5.5 that causes all the trouble I run the 10.5.5 combi update again. AND the trouble started again.
Apple - what a shame!!! I'm using mac since begin of the 90s. Never experienced such a hassle with Mac and Mac software.

Having trouble exporting to pdf from InDesign CS6

When I attempt to export to pdf from InDesign CS6, the application crashes. Apparently there is some phantom plug-in issue.
I need to get this resolved asap.

Could you also provide details about what you've tried, and what errors you encountered? Is this problem limited to a particular document, or all documents?

Remove ALL Images from PDF Export?

I'd like to remove ALL images from a PDF export (Indesign CS6), with the intention of having the smallest file size possible for review. All the images are Photoshop PSDs.
I have created a PDF Preset (PDF 1.7) that omits EPS, PDF and Bitmap.
That covers any PSDs that contain opaque backgrounds, i.e. are considered to be non-transparent. However, any PSDs that do NOT contain such backgrounds still appear in the exported PDF. I assume they are NOT considered to be Bitmaps?!?
I've gone for maximal compression of images (in the Preset) also just to see how small I can get the file, but it's still over a meg, and I'd really like even smaller. I live in a rural part of England where net access is painfully slow, and even a few meg of data takes far too long to upload, not to mention the constant drop-outs. Consider further that my document is likely to grow by several orders of magnitude and hopefully you can see why I'd like to sort this issue out as soon as possible.
I've not done any scripting but assume it would be trivial to hide images with a script. However, I'm not sure how such a script might know how to make visible only the images that were previously hidden by the script. Obviously I would not wish to unhide images that must stay hidden. Maybe some form of image/object tagging, if that's even possible in this product, i.e. tag them "temp hide" on first pass of the script, and so forth.
Any suggestions much appreciated.

@James – to mark the container frames of the nonprinting images by a fill color, you could add the following lines of code in the for loop:
allGraphicsArray[n].nonprinting = true;
//The parent of the graphic is the container that holds it.
//We could use it to fill it with a tint of e.g. 20% of black:
allGraphicsArray[n].parent.fillColor = "Black";
allGraphicsArray[n].parent.fillTint = 20;
But this approach will add a new problem for images, that only use a portion of the holding graphic frame. Or are only partly visible due to a clipping path or a clipping mask or totally transparent areas due to transparent pixels.
Already colored backgrounds will be recolored…
@Sandee – I see the advantage of the PostScript to Distiller way in this situation, but there are two disadvantages:
1. Live transparency will be flattened (could be no issue in this use case, but you never know).
2. The gray area with the big X will be applied also to parts of the images where no pixels are present (transparent pixels in PhotoShop or TIFF files).
To work around all these issues we need a more complex script that is building a path object around the transparent parts of an image or using an applied clipping path for that purpose and fill that with a gray tint (and maybe with an X).
Here some screen shots to illustrate the problems (with or without using PostScript/Distiller):

How to export an interactive pdf from InDesign at a smaller file size.

I have a single page InDesign doc with a side navigation panel to the right of each page. This panel has interactive buttons created in InDesign.
When I export as an interactive pdf, the file size is over 27MB and I need it to be much lower.
I should mention that this doc was made from an original PRINT InDesign doc of facing pages, which was about 55MB.
When making it single pages for the interactive doc, the InDesign file size increased to 105MB.
Can anyone explain this and have any useful tips for saving the pdf down WITH interactivity working?

Okay - With the 15MB pdf, when I go into the PDF Optimizer dialog box, it's telling me that the Fonts are using 40% and the Acrobat Forms are using 29%.
Anyone know of a way I can reduce either of these???

How to create a smallest file size pdf from indesign CS4 document

How to create a smallest file size pdf (suitable for upload to a website) from indesign CS4 document which contains multiple illustrator CS4 illustrations.
I have chosen the "smallest file size option" but the pdf file is over 30MB, can anyone help please.

One trick is to
Set the placed graphics to have a transparency of 99.9% (you can do this with Find/Change and select Objects)
This is enough to force the graphics throught the Transparency Flattener
Next set the Transparency Blend Space to RGB (Edit>Transparency Blend Space)
Next set a custom Transparency Flattner Preset Edit>Transparency Flattner
Next
Use File>Export and choose
Smallest file size
PDF Compatibility Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)
In Advanced Section - go to transparency and selec the new Flattener Preset you created.
*this will convert your vectors to raster, but it should reduce your file size

Exporting large banner to pdf in InDesign - awkward way

Some new colleague has just asked me today to help her with exporting a large banner from InDesign CS5 for print.
The banner is quite huge but InDesign - as well known to most except to apparently her as a so called "Graphic Designer" - isn't suited for the production of large banners rather being a text program with the limitation of 5486,4 mm for each of the two axis.
The banner that she has to print exceeds this length by far thus she asked me for help today to figure out a way to export it and send it to the print shop. It contains two blocks with black color, three text blocks and a background image covering the whole banner. Resolution is fine for the purpose of the banner print/material so don't mind this for now.
The important part and question is this...
I have before had a similar job in my company doing a similar banner with similar dimensions. However knowing that this would prove impossible to create in neither InDesign nor Illustrator in those dimensions I decided to basically create it in Illustrator with only vector graphics and outlined text with half the dimensions in either axis direction of the real physical dimensions needed. In other words 50% of the physically requested banner size for the final print. I then exported the Illustrator file to pdf and made an agreement with the print-shop that they would upscale it to double the size or in other words back to 100% of the size needed.
This little maneuver was a quick and easy solution of mine to a large banner request.
However as mentioned the present banner was firstly created using InDesign - which I think was a bad idea in the first place since I would have personally recommended and preferred Illustrator - and secondly it wasn't done with the right physical size for output in mind.
Now while discussing how to upscale this banner my colleague begun going into the print-dialogue in InDesign, chosing the "Post Script" option (of the Post Script driver installed I guess), then proceeded somehow to Adobe Distiller and started distilling a version of the banner. The whole thing happened so fast that I can only roughly recall this much but after the process took place the outcome wasn't neither satisfying to her (somehow, don't ask me why) nor did it seem to upscale the file.
I then paused and looked confused for a second after which I asked her what exactly she was trying to achieve with this action. The explanation was - apparently - that this was "a standard procedure in a print shop" where she had previously worked and that this "somehow was the best way to export" in a situation like that. I am guessing here whether she meant the pdf or the solving the actual problem with the banner size.
Anyhow I then asked how this would make the banner or quality of it (or both if taking it exactly) LARGER so the banner would resize to - say - 200% if she was using half of the correct dimension size.
Now I am always willing to learn something new and I admit that I don't know everything (who does) but unless something really new has happened in the last ten years that has given InDesign the ability of upscaling a banner with the described content (and me having slept a long beauty-sleep without my knowledge) I don't EVER recall having heard that a procedure like THIS or ANY procedure in this situation would be solving the problem UNLESS the banner's image has the double resolution which the final banner print requires and is subsequently upscaled from 50% to a 100% in the print shop.
I also guess that the export - Ctrl+E for InDesign or Illustrator - which I used the last time generates a perfectly working pdf in this connection that any print shop would luckily accept if just the rest is meeting their technical requirements for printing.
Now tell me that I am right because this really sounds odd to me...

So I do understand the answers correctly when I say that my solution and proposal fully works and that distilling is unnecessary when exporting to pdf from either of the two applications since it a) is a perfectly working solution in regards to the print shop and b) holds - largely - the same export settings as when accessing the Adobe PDF printer or Adobe Distiller. Could anybody confirm this with a "correct" or "incorrect"?
If this is correctly understood why all the different pdf export solutions? Is it just to make the options look a bit "bigger" and giving people more options to access the pdf-export settings?
I remember that when a colleague in our previous CS1 suite created a pdf with the Adobe PDF printer and I did the same using the Ctrl+E export pdf option (which were both done from within InDesign) we got two different pdf file sizes (in i.e. kB). Her's was actually smaller than mine. I don't know if this has changed in the newer Adobe CS versions in particular the latter CS5 and honestly I don't know why - except for the settings - there should be any difference. I am not 100% sure anymore since it's been about half a year ago or so but I think to be able to remember that our export settings were similar if not the same (most likely some of the standard settings).
Any thoughts on this one...?

Exporting Secured PDF from indesign using apple script

hi there, this is my first go at scripting,
basically what i am trying to do is:
tell indesign to turn on a layer called "proof" in the active document
then export pdf - set pdf preference to smallest file size, all pages, and secure the file WITH A PASSWORD so that it can be opened but not edited (unless by someone at my agency who knows this password). this easy enough to manually, but im sick of typing out a password everytime i save a proof.
then save to a specific folder on the desktop, using the already existing filename - so 'myfile.pdf'

Export to PDF ignores document size settings?

I have several documents in InDesign CS4 and when I export them to PDF the document size changes.
I have set all the following options to A4 (210x297mm):
In Indesign: File->Document Settings
In Windows->Printer settings->Adobe PDF->Paper Size
After exporting and opening in Reader 9 the document size has changed to 210 x 303.3mm
This then requires a tweak before the first print run.
I should be able to just export to production and they can print from the PDF without checking the settings!
What have I missed?

I am using the export option not printing to PDF.

Single letters dropping out in PDFs exported from Indesign CS

We are having font issues in some of our magazine's advertisements which proved very costly last month. First let me describe the work flow.
We designed an ad in Indesign CS then exported it using the press setting in Indesign's PDF export option. Here the ad looked and printed fine. The ad was then placed in another Indesign file which was for the layout of one of our magazines. Here the ad still looked fine on screen and when printed out from Indesign. This next step is where the font issue occurs.
When we export the the final magazine's press ready Indesign file, through the PDF press setting in Indesign again, single letters in these problem ads drop out. For example all of the Ds' in the entire ad will be missing. So a sentence in the ad that read "Dirt is Dark" will read " irt is ark."
I am wondering if anyone else has had this problem occur and if they have a solution. The only thing I can think of is in the compression settings there is an option to compress text and line art. We are going to try to uncheck that box to see if it fixes the problem.

I realized, of course, that it does make a difference. If you don't have the fonts on your system, a frequent issue with incoming ads, you couldn't embed the full font at all. You need to be sure that ads generated in CS have fully embedded fonts, not subsets, or risk dropouts. It will only happen when more than one ad uses the same font, but different glyphs.
