Pdf file and Firefox 20.00

I'm not sure what's happening here but when I view a pdf file in Firefox 20.00 from a link on the website it shows all the text as below?
%x$#%-%%#*x%
If I view the pdf in Google Chrome or Safari the text is perfectly ok. Anyone come across this before, obviously something is wrong with Firefox?
Cheers

Hi Os,
your "%x$#%-%%#*x%" I for me defined it as a bug and so I used my link only as an example for the working FF, so the text isn't of interest per se.
My screenshot should show you (ensuring at the same time an answer to Dave) my FF "Einstellungen" (=settings). As you can see in my screenshot from above FF "took" Adobe Acrobat". You/we have the choice, see new screenshot.

Hi Hans,
Thanks for the info. I've gone into preferences and set Firefox to use Adobe Acrobat Professional now, which automatically downloads the pdf to my desktop rather than open it up in the browser. As you say it must be a bug because it's only since v20.00 Ive noticed the difference. Infact before that Firefox never opened it up in a browser window but always downloaded the pdf so when the automatic update happened something in 20.00 has changed.
Cheers

  • PDF files and Firefox slight annoyance

Whenever I have an open PDF file in a tab in Firefox, it renders me unable to scroll using my laptop's touchpad scrolling. When I use it, even after clicking in my active tab, it actually is scrolling the PDF instead of my current tab.

    Hi rawbinator,
Have you checked to see if your PDF add-on is up to date? I'd take a look at [[Opening PDF files within Firefox]]. There is a lot of information in there and it lists a couple of different PDF add-ons. I'd try both to see if it is localized to just one.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Issues with .pdf files and Firefox Android Beta

I read the local paper online and the individual pages present themselves as .pdf files. With the Firefox for Android NON beta clicking on said file downloadable ads it and automatically calls up the default .pdf reader which opens the page. Some recent change in the Beta version simply downloads the file. I then have to manually click to open. Tried clearing defaults on both Firefox and the Kindle app, force stopping both, all to no avail.....suggestions?

the change was made in firefox 25 - that's why you're currently seeing this behaviour only in firefox beta. the general release for firefox 25 is scheduled for next week. <br>i originally also thought to recommend the pdf.js-addon as an alternative but i found it to be very slow on my android too. unfortunately i don't know of any other solution currently.

  • I am unable to open pdf files in firefox, and I have tried all the solutions proposed by others. How can I re-enable pdf viewing in firefox?

I have recently switched to Firefox from Google Chrome, and I am finding that I am unable to open any pdf files from the web in any way in Firefox. I cannot download them and open them in Adobe Reader, and I cannot preview them in Firefox, nor can I use the Adobe plugin. I have tried to use the solutions posed by users on this site, but none of them have worked. Any time I make a change to settings to try to solve this issue, the change never allows me to view the pdf file, and the setting reverts to the previous setting after the browser has been restarted. I don't care how I view the file, but I need to either be able to view it as a preview or I need to be able to download it.

I don't know if this is any help I have had a problem where the pdf files were not opening correctly which I think was the problem here. I spent hours of head scratching and have now found out what the problem is. Right click on the Adobe Reader Icon on the desktop. Select properties and then the compatibility tab. You will see the uppermost section in this screen is Compatibility mode. I have Windows 7 and mine was set to Windows XP. I changed that to Windows 7 and now the problem is resolved. In short use the above instructions to check you are using the right compatibility mode for the version of Windows you are using and your troubles should be over!!

  • I tried opening a pdf file and I set it to use always and firefox which did not work, I was wondering how to undo that and what I should use to open pdf files in the future?

I was attempting to open a document from a frequently used site, I had never been on, on my new mac however. I attempted to open the pdf file and was given the option of which program to use to open it, I mistakenly clicked use always and firefox as the program with which to open pdf files. I do not know how to undo this or what I should do in the future to access the pdf files.

  • I can no longer open .pdf files in Firefox 4

Ever since I moved to the beta version of Firefox 4, I have lost the ability to view .pdf files in Firefox. I was convinced this was a problem totally with Firefox, but at around the same time I upgraded from an old G4 PPC laptop to a new Macbook Pro. Now I find I can't view .pdf files in Safari either. Is this a problem with Firefox, or a problem with the way I have configured my new computer?

I have the same problem and I agree with firebunny. This is really bad style from Mozilla. You should have thought about a problem such as viewing pdf's in the browser and compatible pdf-reader plug-ins.
My Adobe Acrobat plug-in was disabled by default when I installed FF 4 rendering viewing and downloading pdf's impossible. Now I am stuck with this browser and am considering going back to the last 3.6.16 version that I still use at my workplace without any problem.
Also I agree that this has nothing to do with the pdf readers that should be installed on the PC but with FF 4. I can prove this since I installed foxit-reader which also comes with a FF compatible plug-in. Neither here did selecting this as the default pdf application help nor does it enable downloads.

  • I cannot view PDF in Firefox at the first time but once I manually open the PDF file from my local computer, I can view other PDF files via Firefox webbrowser

I install Adobe Acrobat 9 in my laptop which runs on windows 7. I use Firefox 3.6.8 and have the problem with the PDF file. The problem is I cannot open the PDF file in Firefox web browser at the first time I launch firefox. It shows a warning box without any message. Only OK button is shown so I can close it. However, if I manage to open the PDF file from my local computer by just using adobe acrobat itself then the PDF can be opened in the Firefox web browser. I followed the instruction on the mozilla help but nothing works for me. The problem still exists. I wonder if anyone have the same problem like me and know how to solve this. Thank you so much

    Hi there!
I cannot help you, but I think we have a common problem: We got a system here running Vista SP1 with Acrobat 9 standard on it. When we open a pdf file it works normally, but when we open another pdf file, we see the first one in that second window.
Think that missing option to watch several files within a single window-thing messed up more than meets the eye ... but as we just purchased the 15 licenses, we have to use version 9.
I didn't find any clues on this problem, but I will post any new hints I get.

  • Downloading pdf files with firefox 6.0.2 doesn't always work but pdf files do download with IE

for example the home page for the web site kerrville.org has several items to download and most are pdf files using firefox version 6.0.2 the download seems to start but never completes . If I use IE version 8 at the same web site I'm able to download any and all of the pdf files. I have tried this several times and get the same results each time.

I would just get rid of the create PDF 1.1 and go with CutePDF instead. It's a much better program, it's free, and it doesn't create all the issues that the Adobe software does.

  • Can't open pdf files with firefox

After searching for a certain topic on Google I've tried to open the link with a pdf file, but nothing happens.
I receive an error message as if the Proxy that we use here at the company was refusing the connection, but in fact, I've already configured it correctly. This error started after the last update to Firefox 33.0.2.
I've already tried to change the configurations at Options > Applications > Portable Document Format with the option use Adobe Reader (default) and use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox), and also installed an Plugin "PDF Viewer", but nothing solved the problem.
Does anyone has the same problem?
    Thanks

    ■ Use '''Tools -> Options -> Applications ->''' <br> then look under content for Adobe Acrobat forms etc;
<br> note a choice of options is usually available
    * see [[Options window - Applications panel]]
Firefox is of course a web browser. <br>Acrobat reader is Adobe's program used to read and display the pfd files on your computer. Other programs may be used instead of Acrobat reader. You would normally have the Acrobat program and the pdf file present on the local computer, often both on the same hard drive, if you were opening individual pdf files directly with Acrobat.
Firefox uses a plugin so that it may use Acrobat to open pdf files and display the results within a firefox window or tab. If you do not have that plugin installed, or it is not enabled firefox may be unsure what to do with the file and offer to save it to whatever your default local download location is, without attempting to open the file in firefox.

  • [Solved] Way to prevent acroread from opening pdf files in firefox?

    Hi,
I recently installed acroread from aur and now everytime when I click on a link to a pdf-file in firefox, the acroread plugin opens the file in the browser.
Before I installed acroread I got a dialog, where I could choose what to do with the pdf-file.
Under Preferences->Applications I selected "Always ask" for the application type "pdf" but obviously this option is not considered.
    Thanks for any ideas.

  • Why can't I open PDF files in Firefox?

I cannot get PDF files to open for viewing in Firefox. I am on Mac OS platform. This seems to be such an ongoing issue. I have followed the troubleshooting procedures to no avail. I like the look of Firefox better than Chrome, but I am switching over to Chrome because PDF's are so much easier to handle on Chrome, and I am sick of wasting time with this. Any last minute tips or advice?

The Adobe Reader plugin may not be working properly on Mac.

Disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.
PDF files may be found under entries like Portable document or Adobe PDF document or Adobe Acrobat Document.
*Firefox > Preferences > Applications > Adobe PDF document : Use Adobe Reader

  • I can´t open pdf-files from firefox.

When i try to open a pdf-file from firefox nothings happens.
The problem started when i downloaded Firefox version 8.0.1.
    In safari it works.

Your PDF reader plug-in is quite old. Make sure to update your plug-ins (Adobe Reader, Java, Flash, etc.)<br /><br />

The latest Adobe Reader plug-in for Mac Intel is 10.1.1 and you are using version 7.0.9

You need a PDF add-on for Firefox.
Right now most work with FF 3.6 but haven't been updated yet for FF 4.0 just released
There is one that works with Google Docs

Funny, there is a version of Flash for Linux with 1% market share, but no PDF plug-in for the most second used browser in the world.
