PDF file compatibility

What will be compatibility for reading a old version of PDF files (say Ver. 4, 5, 6) with latest version of Adobe Reader or writer (Say ver. 9, 10, etc.).

PDF files have a version number which is not the same as the software version.
Example
PDF 1.0 - relates to Acrobat 1.0
PDF 1.5 - relates to Acrobat 6.0
PDF 1.7 - latest version (but there are later extensions with no number)
If a PDF was correctly made, all versions of Acrobat later than the introduction of the new features will work.
Later extensions include portfolios, and kinds of security.
There are many limitations on the tablet (e.g. iPad) versions of software.

  • PDF file compatibility between LiveCycle ES and Adobe Document Server V6.0

We currently are using Adobe PDF Generator V7.0 and Adobe Document Server V6.0. We generate PDF files (using PDF generator V7.0) from office documents and then add a coversheet, to the generated PDF, and fill some form data using the Adobe Document Server. Now we are upgrading to Office 2007 and for this we will need Adobe LiveCycle ES PDF Generator for PDF conversions. If we move to LiveCycle ES can we still use Adobe Document Server for merging PDF's, and filling form Data? i.e Is the PDF file generated by LiveCycle ES compatible with Adobe Document Server?? Will there be any problems with this combination?
We could as well use LiveCycle ES Document Output for merging PDF files and fill form data with LiveCycle ES Forms. We do'nt want to do this as this would mean we need to by additional licenses of the product. The functionality that could be carried out by Adobe Document Server alone requires two seperate LiveCycle ES products to be purchased.

Doc Server was replaced by Assembler so you would migrate to that and not Output. The Assembler is part of the foundation so I am not sure how it is priced when buying PDF/G. You need to speak to your sales rep about this.

  • Downgrade multiple .pdf files to ver 5 compatibility

I'm looking for a way to script or at least manually in bulk convert multiple .pdf files created using Acrobat pro V9 down to a Acrobat V5 compatible format.
I have an automated OCR application that can't yet read higher than that version.
We have several fully licensed version of Acrobat Po V9 and V8 that might help.
If we have to we'll buy another piece of software to do it.. but I'd rather not.

Do you have a version of Acrobat that has Batch Processing capabilities (ie. a Pro version)?

  • Opening PDF files using preview on some PDF file result in the content not displaying properly. The file I tried to look at has pictures and text. The pictures are displayed ok but the text is shown as pixalated boxes. The same file opens ok via a PC.

Solutions please. Accessing PDF files online using preview normally works ok. However there are a clutch of files on the mothers union web site that although can be opened, present text as pixalated boxes. The pictures contained in the documents are however displayed OK. I experience the same problem on my Imac and my wifes laptop that runs Lion. The same site has other PDF files that can be opend OK. If I access the same problem files using a PC laptop running microsoft windows, they are opened OK with the text displayed as it should be. This is driving me mad....

Yes. Word 2007. (You can see it in Preview if you do ⌘I or choose Tools > Show Inspector.) And it's the transparency issue. The three pics attached show the Jan 2012 newsletter (a) in Preview, (b) in Acrobat Pro, (c) again in Preview, after I saved it in Acrobat, flattening the transparency.
For you, the solution is to use Adobe Reader -- with due note taken of

For them, I don't know. Presumably, they wish max compatibility for their newsletter, but I really don't know how Office 2007 generates PDF. Maybe they should check transparency settings and flatten before generating PDF? Or perhaps save as PDF v1.4 instead of PDF v1.5? I would use Distiller, but perhaps they can't afford it.

  • I am unable to open pdf files in firefox, and I have tried all the solutions proposed by others. How can I re-enable pdf viewing in firefox?

I have recently switched to Firefox from Google Chrome, and I am finding that I am unable to open any pdf files from the web in any way in Firefox. I cannot download them and open them in Adobe Reader, and I cannot preview them in Firefox, nor can I use the Adobe plugin. I have tried to use the solutions posed by users on this site, but none of them have worked. Any time I make a change to settings to try to solve this issue, the change never allows me to view the pdf file, and the setting reverts to the previous setting after the browser has been restarted. I don't care how I view the file, but I need to either be able to view it as a preview or I need to be able to download it.

I don't know if this is any help I have had a problem where the pdf files were not opening correctly which I think was the problem here. I spent hours of head scratching and have now found out what the problem is. Right click on the Adobe Reader Icon on the desktop. Select properties and then the compatibility tab. You will see the uppermost section in this screen is Compatibility mode. I have Windows 7 and mine was set to Windows XP. I changed that to Windows 7 and now the problem is resolved. In short use the above instructions to check you are using the right compatibility mode for the version of Windows you are using and your troubles should be over!!

  • How can I export a smallformat flatten PDF-file with transparant parts in?

My post on a PDF - more clear with images (english):
    http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-eng.pdf
    Deze post in nederlandstalige versie:
    http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-nl.pdf
    Scope?
I'dd like to export an Indesign-file (.indd) to a PDF-file that has to be:
    - the smallest possible file size
    - which displays images and text sharp on the screen
    - which also certainly remain transparent parts of .psd-files after exporting
    - that is flattened for easy print
    The problem?
    ▪ How and with which of settings can I export such a file from InDesign 5.0?
    ▪ If necessary in combination with some settings (after exporting) in our Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
    Further explanation
The export file contains lots of text, graphics, photographs and drawings. Many of these items are .psd-files that contain transparent areas. The intention is that this transparent parts actually remain transparent even after exporting/flattening /decreasing the PDF.
    ▪ With InDesign 5.0?
→ In the window Export Adobe PDF: (images see: http://www.logicontrol.be/gallery/documents/help-eng.pdf )
Should I start from a default PDF preset   (if yes > which one??)
    Possibilities are: High Quality Print / PDFX-1a: 2001 / PDFX-3:2002 / PDFX-4:2007 / Press Quality / Smallest File Size
Or is it better to create a PDF preset on my own?     (if yes > which settings??)
    Standard > PDF/X-format?
    Compatibility > PDF-version?
Compression > If artwork should be compressed and downsampled, and if so,
which method and settings to I have to use ?

Advanced > How can I control fonts, OPI specifications, transparency flattening, and JDF instructions are

    ▪ With Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro?
→ How can I reduce the file size extra, so more reducing after exporting into PDF ?
→ How can I flatten the exported file (if not done during the export) ?
!! Important, when I export/reduce/flatten the file, I ‘dd like that the parts of images who were transparent before, stays also transparent after !!
    WHAT CAN I DO ??

    Hello,
I'm sorry you're having trouble. Unfortunately, this forum is for the ExportPDF service of Acrobat.com. The ExportPDF service functions as a PDF to *.docx file convertion and we can't help with problems specific to the desktop version of Acrobat or InDesign.  I'm happy to point you in the right direction.

We have done toleration testing on firefox version 5 thru 6 and haven't got an issue with our website generating pdf files for our users. One of our users upgraded to firefox version 7.0.1 and they tried to generate a pdf report, now a screen pops up with Corrupted Content Error The page you are trying to view cannot be shown because an error in the data transmission was detected. I recreated this issue on my pc yesterday by installing firefox 7.0.1. Any hints as to what I need to look at would help. Cannot provide the url because it is a secure website for law enforcement. • Checking for pdf/x Compatibility

    Hello there
I am using PDF Generator (from LiveCycle ES3) to convert WORD documents and images to pdfs.
In the PDF Generator settings, I am setting the "Compliance Standard" to "PDF/X-3" and the "output intent profile name" to "U.S. Web Coated (SWOP) v2".
Am I able to check (and more importantly verify to my client) that these settings have been applied to the resultant pdf?
When I open the resultant pdf in Acrobat Pro, in "Document Properties", the PDF version is stated as 1.3 (Acrobat 4.x).  However, there is no mention of "x".
In the preflight dialog, I can check the compliance of the document against the various PDF/X standards, however there is no statement of what the current version is.  Moreover, the button to analyze the pdf against the various "output intents" (SWOP, Japan Color Coated and Coated FOGRA39) is greyed out (I am able to "analyze and fix" against each of these options, but again there is no indication of what the current output intent is).
There are no custom properties in the Custom settings tab of the Document Properties dialog (if I save the pdf using "analyze and fix", a value of "PDF/X-3:2002" is created for the custom property "GTS_PDFXVersion" in the new pdf).
    Many thanks
    Geoff Olding

    Hi,
Knowing a PDF file's version premits deduction of what version "compatibility" is present.
Version 1.7 (Acrobat 8.x) lacks compatibility for Acrobat 9.x specific features.
Version 1.6 (Acrobat 7.x) lacks compatibility for Acrobat 8.x specific features.
    And so forth.
Certainly, not an elegantly simple approach; but, nevertheless it is functional.
    Using Acrobat Professional/Extended 9.x -
    Open the Preflight dialog.
    Advanced > Preflight
From the Options drop-down menu, Select "New Preflight Profile".
The Prefight: Edit Profile dialog opens.
A default profile name is provided (New Profile <number>).
Initially, Click the Save button to save the profile. You can rename it later.
Note that "New Profile" is placed in "Custom
Now, locate your "New Profile" in the column at the left of the dialog and select
    "Custom checks".
The available custom checks list loads in the pane to the right.
Above and to the right is a "Find" field.
    Enter the string "version".
    A filtered list appears.
A custom check is available for "versions newer than":
    1.2 | 1.3 | 1.4 | 1.5 | 1.6 | 1.7
and there is a custom check for "version older than 1.3".
Add the desired custom check to the profile. Save.
Configure the check for Error | Warning | Info
Info is "Notification" in the report that can be provided.
Once you have configured "New Profile" it can be used by a Batch Sequence to check multiple files.
When a Preflight is selected for use by a Batch Sequence you can configure for a "on success" and/or "on error" report.
    Be well...

  • I get an error when trying to open certain PDF files in Lion on Mac.

I am having trouble opening CERTAIN .PDF files on my MacBook Pro. I am running Lion. The file is attached to a Gmail message as a standard .PDF file.
    This is my error:
"File "XX" cannot be opened. It may be damaged or use a file format Preview does not recognize."
I have also downloaded Adobe X reader to see if the compatibility issue is just with Preview. I get an error that the file is "damaged" and cannot be recovered. Meanwhile, the file downloads/opens just fine on Windows XP Office and iOS (on my iPad). So I am thinking that it must be some sort of compatibility issue with Lion.
So far, other .PDF files open on my MB Pro. I haven't tried all of my saved .PDF files, but I did try a couple.
Anybody have any suggestions? There seems to be an error with this particular file opening in Lion, but not with the same file opening on another operating system.

The issue mysteriously resolved itself. I shut down the computer, and the next day I booted back up and tried to open the same file, and everything was OK. Very bizarre, since I had opened it previously on this same MacBook. Anyway, anyone have any insight into what happened?

  • IE 7 not displaying PDF files

    WinXP SP3 desktop
Installed: Acrobat Reader 9 and Acrobat 6.0 Professional
Up until recently, when an update from MS and adobe were installed, Internet Explorer 7 has been displaying PDF files when clicking on a link to the document. I do not know which company is at fault for compatibility here, but I would prefer to have IE7 read/save PDF docs. As it is now, an window pops up (no error number) saying "The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required. Please exit and try again." I click the OK button then Acrobat 6.0 Pro loads and with no document showing. Simply turns on. I open any PDF file manually using either Reader 9 or Pro 6, but IE7 will only come up with above msg.
    Corrective actions attempted were:
    1) Reinstall Reader 9 on top of itself.
    2) In Pro 6, Edit | Preferences | Internet and deselected "Display PDF in browser, restarted program, went back to re-select it, restarted program.
I did notice a new process running named: wisptis.exe
The error message above sounds more like to me that the Pro is assigned the job to read downloaded PDF files, but with the Web Browser Option set to "Display PDF in browswer", I do not know why IE7 is not reading them.
Thank you for your help in advance.

Try troubleshooting the Safari .plist file.
    Quit Safari.
Open a Finder window. Select your Home Folder in the Sidebar on the left. It has a small house icon. Then open the Library folder then the Preferences folder.
Move the com.apple.Safari.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Launch Safari. See if that made a difference.
Also, check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. Make sure it's not an Extension preventing PDF's from rendering.

  • How do I download PDF files from Safari 5.0.5?

I am unable to open PDF files. All I get is a blank black screen. I now download PDFs into my computer from the internet (with mixed success), which is several steps more than has ever taken me in the past.
Since finding this problem I have updated the Adobe Reader and run system updates today, to no avail.
Adobe reports that there is a compatibility issue between Safari 5.1 and Adobe Reader. They offer several solutions none of which has worked for me.
(http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/multi/safari-5-1-incompatible-reader.html). Is updating Safari going to help me, or are there other solutions?

    Hi..
    Go to    HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the Adobe PDF browser plugin from the Internet Plug-Ins folder to the Trash..
Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If you have trouble finding that file..
Open the Finder. From the Finder menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
Type this exactly as you see it here:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    Click Go

Im sorry because the os is in spanish, so i translate for you the fileds names shown
etiquetas means tags or keywords or labels, as you can see in the first picture at the second row, some file (office pack) show the tags but the selected one doesn't (pdf).
propiedades means properties. The properties shown are different if I opened from file explorer to acrobat.
I think there is a compatibility problem with the xmp file (metadata) from pdf file ans windows 8.1 (64bits). I tried to solve it by installing a missing file called ifilter, but the problem continues

I believe this is all normal.

  • Problems opening & printing pdf files created on a Mac

I am at my wit's end! I recently upgraded to a new version of Acrobat and suddenly a lot of my clients could no longer open my pdf files. I uninstalled the latest version of Acrobat and reinstalled an older version (Acrobat 8.1.3). Some clients started being able to open my pdf files but others could not. So I started using the Acrobat Share server and sending links. Some of my clients cannot open those either and many cannot print even if they can open the files that way. I personally also cannot print from the Acrobat Share server. The pdf files print out with all the surrounding graphics and application design elements. I also can't open the pdf files that I created on my Mac using my PC laptop running Vista. I have tried opening and printing both pdf files and the Acrobat Share links from my Mac and my PC laptop running Vista, to no avail.
I was under the impression that compatibility problems between Macs and PCs were largely a thing of the past. I was also under the impression that the whole point of exchanging pdf files was that pdf files are cross-platform compatible. Not only am I am losing tons of valuable time, I may be losing credibility with my clients (especially since I have an IT background). I desperately need to know what version of Acrobat I should be running on my Mac so that when I scan documents into my Mac, the pdf files that are created are completely 100% compatible with both Mac and PC operating systems regardless of what operating system and what version of Acrobat my clients are running. I also need to be sure that those same pdf files I create on my Mac can be seemlessly printed out from either a Mac or PC regardless of the operating system or Acrobat Reader version. If anyone can help me get to the bottom of this, I will be eternally grateful. Thanks.

This file downloaded and works fine for me in Preview on both OS X 10.5.7 and 10.4.11 (and opens in Acrobat Pro 9.1.1 and 8.1.5, and the latest version of Reader on both versions of the OS). As expected.
If you're printing from Acrobat.com by right clicking in the image area and selecting Print, don't. This isn't printing the PDF, it's printing the Flash frame that contains, as you've noticed, buttons and other elements. (Adobe's Mac Flash plugin is notoriously buggy.) Direct your clients to download the file by selecting the download button, not by right clicking and printing.
Again, your PDF file is fine.

  • PDF file error in  Acrobat version 9.0

    Hi guys,
I am able to see the see PDF document via document viewer tcode - SDV if the local desktop Acrobat version is 7.0 but in other machines which has Acrobat reader 9.0. the document cannot be opened it saves in the desktop as .FAX file.
I am using the SAPGUI version 640 release.
Please let me know the reason.
    regards,
    Prabhu

    Hello Prabhu,
this is a known issue. Please see note 1308147:
The ECL Viewer 6.0 delivered with the SAP GUI 7.10 Compilation 3 has
compatibility issues with Adobe 9 (Adobe Reader 9 or Adobe Professional
9 or Adobe Standard 9). The SAP GUI crashes/freezes when viewing PDF
    files in transactions like SNOTE.
The same problem is experienced if the standalone version of the ECL
Viewer 6.0 is used with Adobe 9. But in this case the SAP GUI
crash/freeze happens only if the ECL Viewer 6.0 is used in applications
like SAP Document Mgmt. System to view PDFs first followed by PDF
    viewing in transaction like SNOTE
    Other terms
    ECL Viewer 6.0, Adobe 9, SAP GUI 7.10 C3
    Reason and Prerequisites
The ECL Viewer 6.0 supplies Adobe libraries which are not compatible
with the ones supplied with Adobe Reader 9.
The note is applicable to you only if you have installed the SAP GUI
7.10 C3 with the Engineering Client Viewer for SAP GUI 7.10.
Also, If in case you have installed the standalone version of the ECL
Viewer 6.0 and use it in applications which use ECL Viewer within the
    SAP GUI
    Solution
The Current workaround is to use lower versions of Adobe Reader till
there is further update on this incompatibility.

  • How to retain Transparency in PDF file while exporting?

    Hi All,
In our project we export the PDF file by using two option.
    1. By using PDF Style file
    2. By using Default settings (IPDFExportPrefs Interface)
We have one image frame in template which contains transparent image.
    1. In this case it copies IPDFExportPrefs from PDF Style file then it exports the PDF File by processing kPDFExportCmdBoss command.
But it does not retain trasparency in output PDF file.
    2. In this case it copies IPDFExportPrefs from  default settings and then it exports the PDF File by processing kPDFExportCmdBoss command.
But it retains trasparency in output PDF file.
We are not able to get exact flag that used to retain the transparency effect in PDF file.
So please help me to resolve this problem. This is very urgant.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Santosh Kadam.

I seem to have resolve this issue by setting compatibility option under Adobe PDF Preset.
We can set this option by using SetPDFExAcrobatCompatibilityLevel() under IPDFExportPrefs Interface.
In our case it was using IPDFExportPrefs::kPDFVersion13 from preset style file but it must have value  IPDFExportPrefs::kPDFVersion14 for InDesign CS4.
    Thanks,
    Santosh Kadam.
