PDF file lines aren't vectors but rectangles.

I have a PDF file which has been produced in Indesign (it may originally have been created in Illustrator or Photoshop).
On opening the PDF most of the vector parts of the file are not true lines but seem to be rectangles or the outer edges of a line in this particular case 0.105mm's apart.
I have noticed this before with PDF's and it is very frustrating.
I am trying to create a dieline from these files and if I tried to create a cutting die from this, the laser would create an unholy mess when it tried to burn.
Is there some kind of setting that makes sure the PDF is created with true vector lines?
If anyone could shed some light on this I would be most grateful.
Many Thanks in  advance,
Dahzee

Bob & Grant, thanks for taking the time to reply.
Could you please just give me one more piece of information.
I am so far down the food chain from whoever is doing the Artwork, I get very little say in how this is created.
Is there one instruction I can pass back up the line to the Designers that could give me at least a fighting chance of having a decent single line file to make my dielines?
I am a CAD guy so I have no concept of what the Designers are doing in Illustrtator, Indesign or Photoshop.
Thanks again in advance.

    It will work but
String x1= stripper.getText(doc);reads the whole document .so it will also throws exception if the file size is large. It might be an idea if you spent a few minutes considering the code fragment which was kindly posted. Your problem is that reading the whole file's text into memory uses up all the memory. Okay, that's a problem. So instead of whining here, why not consider what might fix that problem? The ridiculously obvious idea is to not read the whole file's text into memory. Can you figure out how to change the posted code to read, for example, only one page? If you can't figure that out then, really, perhaps you ought to consider doing something else instead of programming.

  • Mac Lion macbook pro, download pdf files fails, no error messages but work in Safari.

On requesting a download of a pdf file the source supplies this but nothing appears in the Firefox download window. Same pdf appears happily in Safari. My MAC pro with same Firefox progreamme works OK also.

Disabling a plugin worked for me
Go to Tools, Add-ons, Plugins tab
then disable the plugin: Adobe Acrobat NPAPI Plug-in Version 10.1.3

  • I copy a pdf file to ipad by itune, but where can i open it on  iPad?

i copy a pdf file to ipad by itune, but where can i open it on  iPad?

How did you get the PDF into iTunes, drag to the books library? What PDF apps do you have on the iPad? If you dragged into the books library - and you have iBooks, look in there.
You can email the PDF to yourself and it will open a as mail attachment. You need a compatible app in order to save it, but you can open it from the mail app.

  • Unable to open some pdf files by clicking on them, but can open in Adobe Reader 10.1.0.

When I click directly on some pdf files which have been saved in My Documents, I get an error message: "Before proceeding you must first launch Adobe Acrobat and accept the end user license agreement."  Yet, I can open those same files from Adobe Acrobat, they open easily.  This has only happened with PDF files saved from two credit card companies; my bank PDFs and other pdfs can be opened without first opening Adobe Acrobat.  Is there some security block I need to undo or ??  (I am the administrator of these files.)  I have done a reinstall and a repair, but this didn't help.  (I am using Adobe Reader 10.1.0 on Windows 7)

Glad to know that it worked. You can get more information about Protected Mode from the following link:

Although the issue you describe should not be related to the Protected Mode anyhow, but it seems that its a bug in the product.

  • Firefox will not open PDF files from my financial website, but IE will.

When I try to open reports in Fidelity, UBS, etc, the file downloads, but removes the extension so it won't open and I get the message "Unknown file type". I tried the same procedure in IE, and the files open without problem. I do not want to use IE. How do I get the files to open. This is a recent (~5 days) problem.
    Thanks,

  • When I print PDF files, the text prints correctly but pictures print as a black spot?

I am using an HP Officejet Pro 8500 A909g, CB023A on Windows XP 32-bit.
I have replaced all my ink cartridges, cleaned and aligned printheads, and printed the print quality diagnostic page and it is great.  I have printed documents with pictures in them and they are fine.  I have unistalled and reinstalled all of the printer software and latest updates with no problems during installation.  The print problem remains. As I just had a thought to print the troublesome PDF file from another computer, same printer, it printed perfectly.  I realize this is a software issue on my computer not associated with the printer itself and isolated to PDF files.  I am at a loss of what to look for.  Can anyone point me in the right direction?  Is there a setting in windows or adobe that would cause this kind of printing problem?  Thank you!!

  • Upside down pdf file. Rotated and save but still upsided.  How to solve this problem?

I received a pdf file that is upside down. Rotated and saved.  When I open the file, it is still upsided.  How to solve this problem?

    Hi,
I think you are rotating the PDFs from View and rotate. it would only change the current View of the PDF.
Kindly click on Tools on the right hand side > Pages > Rotate. then save the PDF.
Let me know if it helps.

  • I converted a pdf file to a Word document but it's not printing properly.

The message I get is "The margins of section 1 are set outside the printable area of the page."  How can I fix this?

    Hey Jean Wood,
Please let me know whether you are using Adobe Reader or signed up at https://cloud.acrobat.com/.
Also, try converting any other PDF file to word and check what happens.
Have you downloaded the file first onto your computer?
    Hope to hear from you.

  • Help! INDD PDF file appears pixelated when projected, but not on laptop

    Hello, all,
I'm preparing an important presentation and want to ensure that my slides look great when projected at an event next week. I'm concerned because at a practice pitch a couple weeks ago, they appeared pixelated when projected, even though they looked beautiful on my laptop screen. This includes fonts and vector graphics. I had created the slides in InDesign 6 and exported to PDF. I'm posting screen shots of the file settings for each below. Should I have done something differently? Can anyone share best practices for exporting to PDF when the intent is to project the PDF from a laptop? I would really appreciate any advice.  Thanks!

Waiting on technical details of projector

If you're displaying the PDF with Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader then any vector content (graphics and text) will scale perfectly; the document setup in InDesign has no bearing other than to set a 4:3 aspect ratio for the pages (PDFs don't measure in pixels). As Rob says there's no getting around the resolution of the projector.
Given how PDFs behave there's no complex 'best practice' guide for on-screen or projected content driven by a desktop computer. You can work in any color space and use any combination of transparency, raster and vector content you wish, then just run  Export > Interactive PDF with the default options. If you're displaying via a mobile device it's a good idea to work in RGB, as some PDF-reading apps will mess up  CMYK>RGB conversion, and don't bother with any rich media (Flash/video).
