PDF file problem

Apologies if I am posting this in the wrong part of the forum.
I am having trouble with pdf files I save from websites.
When I try to open them, I get the message:
unable to open FILENAME because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).
I know there is no problem with the pdfs themselves, because everything works OK on my Windows computer. Is there something I need to do to my MacBook Air to get it to be able to save pdf files and then open them again?
I have tried to select the webpage content and save it to a Word file, but the page will not let me select it.  Again, I have tried this with several pdf files, all of which work fine on Windows, so it is not the pdf that is the problem, but Mavericks must be doing something wrong, or maybe there is a plug-in or something that I need.
Any advice on how to resolve this?

Just to add a bit more detail, in case this helps to explain the problem better.
When I am on Safari and open a PDF file on the website, I click on EDIT (on the menu).
Normally when I do this i can then SELECT ALL, but when I am viewing a PDF file on Safari the 'select all' is greyed out, so I cannot 'select all.'
If someone emails me a PDF file, it opens perfectly, so the problem seems to be associated with PDFs on Safari.
I'm not sure if this helps to explain he problem further, but I believe it is a problem with Safari, not with the PDF file.

There is nothing more frustrating then spending all day trying to upload on single file to iWeb and have it not work...again and again and again...
I have a .pdf that I created for my Ordering on my website. The pdf works completely fine on my MAC and can be previewed and opened with Adobe Reader with no problems. It can also be opened and viewed from Windows. I have tried several times to upload this file to my website with no success.
I have put the file in my Documents folder on iDisk and have tried to create a hyperlink to it on my webpage. I have also tried dragging and dropping the actual file onto the webpage and uploading it that way. No such luck.
    This is getting really frustrating.
    Anyone have any ideas?

When you tried to create a hyperlink to the file in the Documents folder in your iDisk, how did you go about this? Did you use the Link inspector and choose 'A File' in the dropdown menu in the Link To box?
This is the appropriate way to set up a download for visitors. You don't actually need to upload the file anywhere first. Just navigate directly to it on your hard disk in the Open dialogue which opens when you select the File option. When you publish, the file uploads to .Mac or to your local folder ready for uploading to your non-.Mac server.
This is an often-asked question, and for some reason it's usually PDF files which are being discussed when it comes up. I put together a test page some time ago describing the process. This was originally for a guy called Jason and I then updated it for a poster called Jennifer. The principle is the same no matter what the name. This page is still available here, on my local server.

    Hello all,
I've solved this problem... may be it isn't the best solution, but now I don't have any problem with big pdf files.
Sometimes Acrobat Reader may not be properly displaying the PDF file within the browser. And I've found that, to solve this problem, Adobe recommends configuring Acrobat Reader as a 'helper', not a 'plug-in'. To configure Acrobat or Acrobat Reader as a helper application:
1.) Exit or close your browser.
2.) Start or open Acrobat or Acrobat Reader.
3.) Select your version of Acrobat and follow the instructions below.
Acrobat 6.0 or above on Windows:
1.) Select 'Preferences' from the Edit menu.
2.) From the Preferences dialog box, select 'Internet' from list on the left.
3.) Uncheck 'Display PDF in browser'.
    Acrobat 5.0 on Windows:
1.) Select 'Preferences/General' from the Edit menu.
2.) From the Preferences dialog box, select 'Options' from list on the left.
3.) Uncheck 'Display PDF in Browser' under Web Browser Options.
    Acrobat 4.0 on Windows:
1.) Select 'Preferences/General' from the File menu.
2.) From the General Preferences dialog box, select 'Options' from list on the left.
3.) Uncheck 'Web Browser Integration' under Options.
    ( I've found it at: http://www.aspplayground.net/forum/m_382719/printable.htm )
Now, when you click on a pdf link the file is opened outside the browser using the Acrobat Reader applicantion and without any problem.
I hope this helps you _

  • Secure PDF file problem

I have a problem with Illustrator when I save my work as a pdf file to send to my clients. The pdf file appears to be OK so I save and close the file. When I open the file again, the file is blank. At first I had a client keep telling me my pdf files were blank!
Now I have to save and close the file without password protection then open it again in Acrobat Pro and add password protection. Is this a bug in the CS3 suite?
This seems to be happening since I've started on Mac Pro, OS 10.5.1. Never had a problem on my old G4 and 10.4.1.
    Illustrator CS3 13.02

Ken, I'm having a similar problem.
I built a series of PDFs using InDesign. I exported them as JPGs, then converted them to PDFs (a personal preference). Everyone could open the files just fine. As a last-step to secure our data, I added some security settings, sent out the PDFs again, and everybody opens them fine except for one individual, who opens them only to find blank white pages.
He then removed the security features from the files I sent him, and the problem persists.
Have you gained any ground with this issue?

  • Opening a PDF file problems.

    Hi Francisco,
In the AccessGate screen for the WebGate, if you have the CachePragmaHeader and CacheControlHeader set to "no-cache", try setting them to "public" (or blank), restart the web server, and see if that resolves the issue.

  • Click box used to open pdf file problem

I want to give learners the chance to open a pdf file with additional information from a link to a click box. I want learners to be able to close out of the pdf and return to the same screen in the lesson when they finish reading the pdf. Currently it is not behaving as I expected.
I have set the click box link using 'On Success, open URL or pdf 'and selected the 'New', 'Continue playing project' attributes.  I have been using the various Preview modes to test out functionality and find it works as expected; that is a second window opens with the pdf which can be closed, leaving the main screen unaffected. In HTML Browser mode to puts out a new tab which I can close to return to the main lesson. I don't like this option as well.
We are now down to my questions:
Is there a way to display the secondary file as an independent pdf file rather than a tab, like it does in the Preview mode, 'from this slide'?
Also, is there a way to stay on this parent slide once I return, then open up the same secondary window again if I want? Currently if I try, I'm passed along to the next slide rather than have the secondary window open again.
    Thanks for your help.

    HI there
The option "continue playing project" needs to be DE-selected. With it selected, when your user clicks the Click Box, play will resume.
There is no way I'm aware of to influence the browser behavior as it's up to the configuration on each user's PC as to whether you see a new window or a new tab.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Downloading pdf file problems

Over the last couple of weeks I have downloaded a number of pdf documents from the web. On each occasion double clicking it (I have Preview as my default) Preview gives an error message "The application has unexpectedly quit". If I launch Adobe Reader (7.0) and use the File open command I get an error message telling me that the file is damaged. Downloading the files onto my company PC and transferring the files using a memory stick produces perfect files. Both Preview and Adobe can open them
Is the download process damaging the pdf document and are there Safari settings that can affect this?
    iMac G4 1,25 GHz, 160GB drive. 1MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   Safari 1.3.1
    iMac G4 1,25 GHz, 160GB drive. 1MB RAM   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

That is two things you have said are not working in Safari: downloading pdf (how about other) files and clicking on a link.
I would first empty your cache (Safari > Empty Cache). If that does not work, I would delete Safari's Preference file which is named "com.apple.Safari.plist" and is located in the Preferences folder in the Library folder on Finder's Home Page (~username/Library/Preferences).
You could also see if Safari is giving you problems in a new user account to see if you have a system-wide problem or a user-account one. To create a new account, open System Preferences and click on Accounts. You may have to click on the padlock and give your admin name and password to create an account. Click on the plus sign in the lower right corner to create the new account. I see no reason to give it a password. You can delete this account later using using the minus key, although I have kept my second account to use for testing (the user folder only takes up 32 kb).
I had no problems downloading a pdf from the link you gave using Safari 2.0.3. It sould also work with Safari 1.3.1.

  • Android reader and Paperport 12 created PDF files problem

i am having a problem with Android reader and documents created with nuance Paperport 12. The documents are a uniform 380k and contain a scanned monochrome image. The problem is as follows - When I open the document the page displays correctly but is way too small to be read on the device. The device is a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini running Android 2.1 update 1. I have duplicated the problem exactly on a Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 mini pro.
What happens is when you zoom in on the document the page goes blank. There are no restrictions or security options on the document and the metadata shows nuance Paperport 12 as the creator. I can zoom in on the document on any other device other than the android handsets.

  • Opening .pdf files in IE 10 & 11

We have online modules in an LMS.  Learners cannot open the .pdf attachments in these modules if they are using IE 10 or 11 as their browser.
There is lots of discussion of this problem in other forums and fairly sophisticated solutions have been offered to individuals making enquiries on this issue e.g. making changes to the registry.
My problem is that many of our learners are in agencies where computers are networked and they are not Admin on their computers.  Their tech people will not allow downloading a different browser, making changes to IE settings nor making changes
in their registry i.e. any of the offered suggestions re overcoming the opening .pdf files problem.
Is their something simple anyone could suggest to allow restricted IE 10 & 11 users to open .pdf's on a website?
    Thanks.
    Judy

    Hi Judy,
The following are the main reasons why PDF files cannot be displayed:
    1. Security settings. Internet Explorer security settings may block the PDF from lauching successfully.
    2. Failed installation of the PDF viewer.
    4. One of your add-ons that causing this.
    3. Incompatiblity with the design of a website. Some websites are specifically designed to use Acrobat for displaying PDF files. These sites will not work with PDF.
Solution 1: Ensure that the Internet Explorer security settings are not set to high. Also disable enhanced protected mode.
Solution 2: Make sure you have the correct PDF reader add-ons and set to correct settings.
Solution 3: Manage add-ons in Internet Explorer:
    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/internet-explorer/manage-add-ons#ie=ie-10-win-7
Solution 4: Use compatibility mode (go to tools --> Compatibility View Settings) to check the issue.
Since people unable to make changes on settings, you may consider to contact the IT administrator or someone with admin rights to fix the issue.
    Hope it helps.
