PDF files are unreadable

I am currently using Adobe Reader 9.2 on a windows xp system.  For many years I had no trouble with Adobe Reader.
Currently many pdf files are completely unreadable, with some headers appearing normally, but most sections filled with garbage - random appearing ASCII characters.  You can see this in the attached jpg file.
Oddly enough, if I copy part of the garbage text from Adobe Reader and paste it onto a text reader like Notepad, the text comes out perfectly readable.  Also, pdf documents that are produced in a more photographic (non character) form are perfectly readable.
I have uninstalled and reinstalled adobe Reader twice with no change in program behavior.  I assume that I have a mysterious font conflict, but I can't figure it out.
What is going on?

The files are not corrupted; if I forward an unreadable pdf to another email address and an unaffected computer, the pdf file is completely readable.
Attached is the header of a typical pdf file opened with a text reader.

  • All my Adobe Reader (PDF) files are opening only in the secondary monitor by default, as I am workin

I am using Adobe 8 Professional and working on Windows XP. I have been facing an issue lately with opening files in a dual-monitor environment. All my Adobe Reader (PDF) files are opening only in the secondary monitor by default. There are times when I work only in one monitor and when I open a PDF file and want to have a look at it, I have to connect another monitor to view that file, since this file is open in the secondary monitor. It is very disappointing with such instances happening with Adobe (a leading organization). Can you please help so that the Adobe Reader files open in the primary monitor by default?

On a Windows system disable the preview of Windows Explorer.

  • PDF files are not opening in IE!!!

Some PDF files are not displayed while opening in browser IE . The PDF files are generated through servlets (JWS 2.1). While analysing the problem we have found that the one request invokes the doget() method of the servelet more than once. This problem is not appearing in netscape.
    Please give suggestions.

I am having the same sort of problem. I have a form posting to a servlet that displays a pdf based on the vars posted to it. My doPost() calls doGet(). When I post to the the servlet the doPost() is called and then it calls the doGet() and then SOMETHING else calls the doGet() again. Since the vars that I am using to load the pdf are posted they are out of scope for the second doGet(). I tried two things to fix this:
I changed my doPost() method to do nothing but check the request variables and hold on to them. Then I changed my doGet() to use the values that I held instead of the request vars. This only worked sometimes.
Then when I rolled all of my code back and changed my form from POST to GET everything worked fine. It seems that there is something that causes the browser to always call the GET when you are using application/pdf. If my doPost() calls my doGet() everything is lost on the second doGet()

  • PDf files are not directly coming in search results, rather coming as a list item \

I have shared search from one farm and 2 other farms are consuming it. PDF search is working fine for one consuming farm but for the hosting farm and the other consuming farm it is showing the result as list item but not as a direct link to the document.
    Any suggestion pls
When the other consuming farm uses the own dedicated search service then pdf files are coming in search result but when it is pointing to the shared proxy it is not working. But for one consuming farm it is working fine.

    Hi ,
Whether you crawled the same content source using the Shared Search service application. If not, please crawl a same content, test again and compare the result.
In addition, whether you configured PDF correctly for the Shared Search, please try to configure it again as the link:

  • Thumbnails of PDF-Files are no longer available ...

    Hi,
Unfortunately, the thumbnails of the uploaded PDF files are no longer available ...
    Any hints ???
    Kind Regards
    Holger

Holger, thanks for the screenshot confirming what you are seeing.
Please click on the broken thumbnail and copy the file link from the browser location bar. Will be something like https://creative.adobe.com/file/40869742-fa53-4dcd-b29c-6962ede2b013.
No one will be able to view the links (including me) but the the asset ID ("40869742-fa53-4dcd-b29c-6962ede2b013") will allow for further investigation. You can also email them to me at [email protected]
As a workaround you should be able to download and re-upload the files and have the thumbnails show.

  • Some PDF files are not displayed in Bridge

    Hello,
here is the problem: I use Adobe Bridge CS2 to browse my large collection of PDF files, and unfortunately some files are not displayed in the Filmstrip View mode; instead a generic icon is shown (bridge1.png). Most PDF files, however, are displayed correctly (bridge2.png). Is this the problem of Bridge or of certain PDF files, and how should I fix them to make them being displayed by Bridge?
    Thanks.

    curt y
In fact, all files have similar type of content (research papers). However, I found out that all files which are not displayed are "protected" by the publisher such that they only can be viewed and printed, but not modified or disassembled. Apparently, this causes the problem with Bridge not displaying them. It's a pity that Bridge cannot handle them...
    Thanks for the help, though.

  • In some web pages, pdf files are downloaded in very small kb and not opening despite I have Adobe reader, Pro and plug in

I have Firefox 3.6.6, downgraded from higher versions since I have this problem below.
At some web pages (mostly professional academic sites like Oxford Journals), when I am clicking to get pdf of an article, Firefox start downloading ridiculously small size and cannot open it as it gives the message "Acrobat could not open 'filename.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged ..."
I know the file is not damaged, because I can open them in explorer. And some websites are also working properly in Firefox. I do not care if it opens in firefox or pops up separately.
I have reloaded Acrobat and Firefox but problem continues.

hello vijayabhaskarv, that sounds as if you're using the pdf viewer built into firefox per default, which might not work in all situations. please see the following article in order to select a different plugin to render pdf files: [[How to disable the built-in PDF viewer and use another viewer]]

  • FF thinks PDF files are binary files, doesn't give me the option to open them

I just got a new Mac, running OSX 10.7 Lion. I downloaded Firefox because I like it better than Safari. It's Firefox 7.0.1.
Aside from the fact that I can't figure out how to get all my bookmarks from the old mac to the new one, a really annoying thing is that I can't get the new Firefox to recognize PDF files as Acrobat documents. It thinks they are "binary" files, and the only option I have is to save them to disk.
I looked at the Applications preferences, and there is no entry for PDF files. I can't seem to create one. I checked the help and it says that to add a download preference you find the type of file you're interested in, click to download it, and tell it "open with" the application you want. But I don't get that option with PDF files, it doesn't let me tell it what to open it with, the only thing it allows me to do is either save to disk or cancel.

I use Internet Explorer for my browser.
A/A - I have reinstalled the latest version of AdobeReader.
When I click an attachment to view it, the first option I am given is to 'save' the file, and then the next pop up message gives me the option to either 'open' or 'view file'. The thing is that I don't want to 'save' each file to my laptop to allow me to see it. I want to be able to merely 'open' the file to view aithout actually saving it first.

  • PDF files are stored to /usr/sap/ SID SYS/global

True or False --> When a PDF file is generated from within SAP the spool file is stored in /usr/sap/<SID>SYS/global
After a recent upgrade to ECC 6 I'm noticing that a large number of SPOOL* files are in the global directory.  Each spool file has 3 components a SPOOL.cfg, SPOOL.xfd and a SPOOL*.ps file .When I examine the spool number using SP01 I see that these jobs all have an output type of PDF. Only files of type PDF appear in the global directory. It does not matter which output device is used. No output device in my system is defined to write to the global directory. Everything is set up to store files to the database.
My assumption is that the generation of a PDF format requires a temporary storage area to convert the data from the "Device Type" setting for the printer (such as Postscript or HPGL) to the PDF format and that the /usr/sap/<SID>SYS/global directory is used for this purpose.
Is there a parameter setting that allows me to modifiy this "conversion" location?

    Assumptions:
---> You are running on Unix - I don't have instructions for Windows, but they would be analogous
---> Your System ID is TX1
---> 2Gb is big enough to hold your Adobe files
    1.) Create a 2Gb file system named /AdobeFiles
2.) Create the required directories under this new file system
    - For example: /AdobeFiles/300ADSP
3.) Verify that the user <sid>adm can write to the directory created in step 2
    4.) Apply SAP note 1327372
5.) Rename the filesystems that SAP note 1327372 creates
    - For example: mv  /usr/sap/TX1/SYS/global/300ADSP   /usr/sap/TX1/SYS/global/300ADSP-ORG
6.) Create a symbolic link for the required directory to the directory created in step 2
    - For example: ln   -s   /AdobeFiles/300ADSP  /usr/sap/TX1/SYS/global/300ADSP
    7.) Test your link
    cd /usr/sap/TX1/SYS/global/300ADSP
    touch TestFile
    cd /AdobeFiles/300ADSP/TestFile
Your file should have been created in /AdobeFiles/300ADSP

  • PDF files are not viewable on my Mac 10.5.8 with Firefox 6.0.2

I cannot view PDF files in Firefox. There doesn't seem to be a plug-in I can download. Oftentimes, PDF links prompt a download, and I am able to view them in my PDF viewer on my computer. But most often, PDF links do not even prompt a download, nor are they viewable in my browser. Thus, I cannot view them at all in Firefox. I have to open a different browser, such as Google Chrome to view the pdf. I don't understand why no one has developed a plug-in to view PDFs in the new Firefox. How can I fix this problem? Would you recommend I install an earlier version of Firefox to fix this problem? Please help. Thank you.

Brandon, I am not trying to access thru Safari, I just mention so people know what is running in my comp in case its helpful.
You are about the location on the Dock, always been there and I always access it from there, but now when I try to access it I got this message:
iTunes requires QuickTime 7.5.5 or later. For more information on upgrading your computer, visit http://www.apple.com/quicktime.
Well I did downloaded it, but when I check the Quick Time Player version on my comp says: Version 7.4.1 (14) not the downloaded one and I still not able to access my iTunes.

  • PDF Files are password protected.  I never set a password

There are a lot of pdf files in the document section.  Must be book or magazine pages as they are titled "page101.pdf" and so on with a date underthem.
I tried to open one to see what it was and I got a "password protected" and a box to enter my password.  I never set a password for this app.  I tried using my Adobe password and my google password to no avail.
How can I open them to see what they are?
    Thanks.
    Janet in NJ

The request for a password has absolutely nothing to do with a password for the application or any relationship to your Google password.
The message password protected refers to the PDF file that you are trying to open. Apparently, whoever created the PDF file either a PDF file creation or subsequently password protected the PDF files. You will need to contact whoever supplied those PDF files to you to obtain whatever the password is or passwords are.
