Pdf files blank when opened in browser on linux

I am running Ubuntu linux 8.04 and 10.04. When I open a PDF file in the browser, I get a blank screen. I am able to open the document in its own window. I am not getting any error message.
I first had the problem on Ubuntu 8.04 using FF 3.6.15. I also have the problem on Ubuntu 10.04 using FF 3.6.15. I have installed FF 4.0b13pre on Ubuntu 10.04 and I still have the same problem.

Yes, that's a plausible explanation.
Never having locked a Numbers document, I don't have first hand experience.
I put my sensitive documents in an encoded disk image file. Less bother. But then, I'm not e-mailing sensitive documents or otherwise exposing them.

  • Reader 10 x, IE 8, Windows XP SP3 - PDF files won't open in browser

We have users that can open a PDF file from our web site in Firefox and Chrome but not with IE8.
Items come up with a blank screen in the browser.
It seems to deal with the pop up blocker - the pages are catergorized as "unknown zone" and thus are blocked.  I haven't been able to figure out how to add that to the allowed sites.  The files are in our domain with /directory name/*.pdf
Users can right click, save and open seperately but not all our users are educated well enough to go through all those steps.
This site gives the parameters of the problem but other than saying display the PDF in another window - ie save and read it outside the browser, it doesn't offer a solution other than that - http://www.bnl.gov/itd/webapps/pdf_help.asp
I have checked the users machines and they have the items under Preferences - Internet - all items checked.
    Thoughts?

Can the files be opened in Preview? If they can, then at least you will know that they are not empty or corrupted.

  • Some pdf files won't open in browser while others do - how to fix that?

    Hello,
just switched from Opera to Firefox and - with the help of some add-ons - feel pretty satisfied already.
One annoying problem though: While many pdf-files will open properly with PDF-XChange Viewer plugin within the browser, there are many websites with links to pdf files where the setting "Use PDF-XChange Viewer (within Firefox)" prompts Firefox to download the file instead.
    Examples:
    http://www.visitbritainshop.com/nordics/travel-transport/london-transport.html
The map of London Transport (link in the middle of the site) will open within the browser
    http://search.knightfrank.co.uk/ngh140118
The floorplan or the brochure won't open within the browser but be downloaded instead
I've never experienced this (in Opera) before.
What could be the reason for that? And is there a way to change it?
    Thanks in advance!

While trying to find a solution for that issue, I stumbled across a post that describes a similar problem with jpegs:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/979919
One reply suggests: "Are you sure that these images are send with a proper MIME type for images and not with a generic MIME type that makes Firefox show the "Open with" dialog? "
The suggested solution, an extension called Open-in-Browser https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/open-in-browser/
works fine regarding the pdfs in question, and is acceptable for me, although I agree with the poster from above, that " it is a bug that should be fixed instead of relying on an extension".

  • Received .PDF files which when opened are in "Western European Windows" and are just gibberish. I have adobe 10.0.01 installed now. Can you help please in how to correct this Thanks

I received three files in Microsoft Outlook in a PDF format. When I clicked on open I got a window showing "Opening Mail Attchment" and only open from "trusted" sources. After opening it displayed a window for File conversion with Windows as the default with Western European( Windows) as I assume the font. The file was shown but had essentially meaningless characters and numbers with maybe the occasional meaningful word. There seems no way to understand why this happened or to correct it. Can you help please

Something is definitely wrong with your install of Reader.
A PDF consists of only the number of pages it was created with.  Reader can and will only open those pages... IF it's installed and working properly.
Opening multiple blank pages from a document which contains none is a clear sign that the software isn't functioning. It's like putting a movie into a DVD player, and your TV starts a picture slide show of your last Summer's vacation. Not possible unless there's something seriously wrong.
    Uninstall Reader 9.
Use either Adobe's clean uninstaller or Windows Installer Cleanup Utility (http://download.microsoft.com/download/e/9/d/e9d80355-7ab4-45b8-80e8-983a48d5e1bd/msicuu2. exe) to remove all Reader installer files from your system.
Reinstall Reader 9 from a new download (do not use the old one if you still have it on your system)

  • PDF files will not open in a Safari (v 6.0.5) browser window

PDF files will not open in a Safari (v 6.0.5) browser window, OS 10.8.5. Version 11.0.04 Adobe Reader and Plug-ins installed. Both local and internet files do not load. What is happening here?

Ok. I reloaded v 11.0.04 of Adobe Reader after quiting Safari 6.0.5 . Then deleted the 2 plug-ins AdobePDFViewer.plugin and AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin . Relaunched Safari and tried to read a pdf from a repository at the URL mentioned in post 10 . The file was loaded and displayed correctly. Also a pdf file from my local disk store displayed nicely as well. What I do not understand is that there is no listing of an Adobe plug in /Library/Internet Plug-Ins , nor does Safari list any Adobe plug ins. So in that case this means that plug-ins for the display of pdfs in Safari windows are no longer needed!
Adobe Reader version 11.0.04  is now working for me.
Thanks for the help and the solution C.F.McBlob

  • Hyperlinks within .PDF document won't open in browser.

So what I want to happen is when I click a hyperlink within a .PDF file which is opened via Adobe Reader XI, I want a new tab/browser (the link) to be opened with/in Chrome.
Currently when I hover my mouse over a link, it turns into a clicky hand thing with a tiny letter 'w' and the address floats above in a box. When I try to shift/normal/ctrl click the link, nothing happens.
Default settings in the reader and chrome.
    Thanks!

Yes. If I open this .pdf file in chrome and click the link, a new tab will open with the link.
Also, I just found something else out. When I open the settings in Adobe Reader and try clicking on the 'help' links such as 'What is protected view' under 'security', I get a message saying "Online help content cannot be displayed. Verify you can launch your web browser and have access to the Internet".

  • PDF files won't open with Adobe Reader.

When I double click on a PDF file Adobe Reader opens to a blank screen for a few seconds & then closes.  The same files open fine with Expert PDF software.

    Three things to try...
Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
Can you open Adobe Reader by itself?  If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].
It could even be a malware issue; see http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/reader-core-dll-error.html

  • Embedded pdf files will not open

Dell Laptop Windows XP up to date, Firefox 4.0, Adobe Reader 10.0.1
Since updating to Firefox 4.0 certain embedded pdf files will not open forcing me to use my Internet Explorer browser to access these files. Tried all of the FAQ suggestions with no relief.
NOTE: I can open previously opened files (Firefox 3.___) but not a new one.

Thank you for the response. I insereted several .pdf files into my MS Word document where they show as Acobat icons. When in MS Word, I am able to double-click on the icons and the files open in Acrobat. I then converted the MS Word document to a .pdf. These icons now only show as pictures and do not open the original inserted .pdf documents.

  • Adobe Reader XI, IE9(32bit), Windows7(System Type: 32bit), pdf file is shown abnoramlly in browser

When we open the pdf file directly in browser page on our site, it's shown like this, the content area is limited on top of the web page. But if we enable the compatibility view of this site, everything becomes normal.
Any resolution to make it work without enabling the compatibility view? Thanks

Sorry, the URL we are using is for our application, which is not public.  We finally found out the reason is that, when opening the pdf file in the IE browser, the "div" value in the jsp file becomes null, instead of 100%, that's why the pdf file is not open in 100% mode.
We fixed it by specify the value "100%" to div in our jsp explicitly, and then the pdf can be viewed correctly.
Therefore, it should not be a PDF problem...
    Thanks all the same!

  • Pdf files won't open in Safari running on a Mac

I just upgraded my MacBook Pro to Snow Leopard in preparation for Lion and ever since the upgrade, pdf files won't open in Safari.  I have Reader 9.4.5.  It opens documents that are on my machine, it just won't open in Safari, nor do the documents download.

MIght be helpful to disable Adobe plugin by going to Adobe Reader's Preferences -> Internet and unchecking "Display PDF in browser using".
Then dump the atrocious bloated Reader.
See this https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3252667?start=0&tstart=0 for further solutions.
