.pdf files come up as web links instead of documents

when I send adobe standard XI produced files to a certain customer they come up as web links instead of documents.  This customer says that they are having no problem opening documents from other people. Any help with this will be appreciated.

    Download: you just download it as you would any other document.
    Convert to Word: either using the ExportPDF online service, or Acrobat.

    Thanks for such a prompt reply. As soon as I try to open the pdf I created a File Conversion box pops up asking me to Select the encoding that makes your document readable. It defaults to Other encoding and then just gives me codes. I cannot access the file itself.

  • PDF export with link to document defaulting to "Open a web link" instead of "Open a file"

    I have a MS Access database and I'm trying to export reports to PDF (I have Acrobat XI Pro) that include a hyperlink to another document on the same drive on my computer.  I have tested this with hyperlinked email addresses, and emails export fine to PDF and are still functional, opening a new email in Outlook.  The hyperlinks to documents work fine in MS Access, opening a Word, PDF, or other document when clicked.
    When I export to PDF, the links to documents say, "This document is trying to connect to: file:" and my filepath.  If I say "Allow," the link tries to open in my default web browser, which comes up blank.  I've tested this on other computers in our office too.  When I right-click the link, I have the option to "Open weblink as a new document" -- this opens the document successfully, but won't be very helpful or fast for our staff.  When I examine the link with Tools - Add or Edit Link, I see that the link's action defaulted to "Open a web link" when the PDF was created.  This seems like it should be "Open a file."  To see if "Open a file" would work in theory, I tried creating a test button in a blank PDF and made the "mouse up" action "Open a file" and linked to various documents on my computer.  Each time, the button does not react to being clicked at all, like nothing happened.
    I also tried making a basic Word doc with just the hyperlink to another document.  It works fine in Word, but, when saved as a PDF, the hyperlink does the same behavior-- tries to connect to the web instead of opening the file on the computer.
    I have a lot of experience building Acrobat PDF forms and working in Acrobat, and I'm almost certain I've created links that open another file on the computer in Acrobat before, but I'm out of ideas and an internet search isn't turning up much.  I welcome any suggestions for things to try.  Thank you!

    This is what I currently have, and it attempts to open in a web browser.  Do you know of a setting in Acrobat I might need to change, or any other solution to tell Acrobat to open the "file:" URL as a document, not try to start the web browser?

  • Link to local PDF-file / or html (not web-view)

    Hi,
    i posted this in the prerelease-forum and got no answear so i thought i give it a try and post here.
    i see it is possible to link to a local pdf file with the webview function.
    but i want to show a local pdf-file in the app-browser. the one in which  linked websites are shown and where i can click "done" to close the  window.
    i've seen it f.e. in the "new yorker" app where f.e. the cartoon gallery is shown in this browser, so it has to be possible.
    does anybody know how this could work?

    Your code is a mess:
    ** there is no apparent reason for the span:
    <td><span class="style1"
    onfocus="MM_openBrWindow('pdf/PR_launch.pdf','','')">Milford, OH
    So change that line to:
    <td>Milford, OH
    ** here you have two double quotes before This.
    <a title="”This" class="pdfFile"
    onclick="MM_openBrWindow('pdf/PR_Launch.pdf','','')"
    Change it to this, (with some other improvements):
    <a title="This" class="pdfFile"
    onclick="MM_openBrWindow(this.href,'','');return false"
    ** This is code salad:
    href="”PR_Launch.pdf”" link="" will="" open="" a=""
    .pdf=""
    file.”="">More (PR_Launch.pdf,
    230kb)</a></span></td>
    Change it to:
    href="pdf/PR_Launch.pdf">More (PR_Launch.pdf,
    230kb)</a></td>

  • Loading from web a pdf file comes up with "expecting a dict object"

On this occasion file attempts to download for reading then stops with message "Expecting a dict file" This file is successfully openned using "Internet Explorer"?

    Good day,
    Try converting the document to a .doc format instead of .docx.
    If that doesn't resolve the issue, please share the file with us via the File Conversion Issue form.  Be sure to reference this forum thread in your description so we can circle back on the issue.

  • When i select a pdf file for download in a webpage instead of automatically downloading the file and opening it using adobe acrobat I get a new blank window in the browser and it says done in the bottom left corner

    when I select a pdf file within a webpage and click to download instead of getting the "download" window and the file automatically opening after download using adobe reader I get a blank webpage (in the same tab) and in the bottom left corner it says"done". No file is downloaded and if I click "back" I just return to the webpage containing the link.

    Aha!  The properties for the plugin file nppdf32.dll for Adobe Reader indicate the file is for Adobe Acrobat.  This misidentification is then used by SeaMonkey as a label in the helper application list.
    Adobe Reader 11.0.3.37:  nppdf32.dll has version 11.0.3.37.  This is the version in SeaMonkey's plugins folder.
    Adobe Acrobat 7.0.8.218:  nppdf32.dll has version 7.0.9.50.
    As for having both Adobe Reader and Adobe Acrobat on the same PC, this generally works providing Reader is installed AFTER Acrobat.  Reader is freeware, and I want to keep it current.  Acrobat is purchaseware, and I cannot afford to keep buying  upgrades or newer versions.

  • How to put Flash video game onto inDesign PDF file and Website page or link?!

    I am making a video game using Adobe Flash 2.0. I need to be able to show what I have through a website (my portfolio) and/or insert it into an interactive Indesign PDF file. The game needs to be able to be played and be used and tested by whoever I send the pdf file to, or whoever is would be view my the site I post it on. I have attempted many different ways to put my game onto my website (cargocollective) and Indesign, but nothing is working! I need help.
    For example I need my game to be placed on the website page, and on the pdf document as an image. When it is clicked on I need it to start so people can play the game. I don't know how to do this and I would really love and need to know how! Thanks.

    Flash should be able to publish an html page which will provide the web page code needed for embedding the swf.  The page it publishes should be sufficient for planting on a server unless you plan to dress it up with other content as well.
    As far as incorporating Flash content into a PDF using InDesign goes, you are best to ask questions about using InDesign in the InDesign forum.  Here is a link to the Overview page whee you can pick which forum applies best to your situation:

  • Printing Word document as pdf files whilst  retaining active internal links

    Hi,
    I have a Word file (Word 2004 for Mac Version 11.3.5) with active links to various sections within the document.
    However, when I print this as a pdf file all the links become inactive. Is anyone aware of a way to prevent this?
    Kind regards,
    Damon

    I tested this problem and got some interesting results. First of all, I created a document in Word 2004 (11.3.5) with two links, one to an external web site and the other to another Word document on my Mac. I then printed the file to pdf and opened the doc in Preview. Neither links were active, although as you have seen they look like a hyperlink. Opening the same document in Acrobat 8, the external link works but the internal link is still not active.
    Next, I printed the Word document via the Adobe PDF 8.0 driver. The same result occured as above. The external link was active in Acrobat but not Preview, while the internal link was no good for either application.
    I did some searching. Mactopia has no mention of this problem. There is a posting on Macosxhints with the same problem, but no fix. So unless someone else out there has an answer you may be out of luck for your internal link...

  • Creating a PDF file as an editable web document

    How do I create a Word document into a PDF file that is editable on the web?  I created the original Word form and saved it as a PDF file and I can edit it from my computer but now we want to upload it to our website and need to have it editable from there.  I have seen forms online before and the editable areas seem to be colored in.  Can someone give me some guidance on this?

    Hi nancyl12891358,
    You might need Acrobat XI to make a fillable PDF form so that I can be edited online as well.
    Refer the below mentioned link for the same:
    Convert existing forms to fillable PDFs | Adobe Acrobat XI
    Then, you can upload this PDF on the web and edit it.
    Hope this information helps.

  • Tricky - PDF file not Opening from Web Browser based application

    Hi Guys,
    Just a brief history about the issue:
    At my client site everything was fine when IE7 was there and everybody were able to open PDF files from web applications in browsers. But after a IE8 upgrade, things changed and customers are facing problems. All are Windows XP SP3 machines
    Issue: If they try to open a pdf file from the browser it just stucks at 0% and hangs with "Cancel" button. Even if they try to save that file it tell downloading and hangs again in the screen without downloading the file.
    Initial fix:
    Open Adobe Reader
    -> select the menu "Edit"
    -> select "Preferences"
    -> select the Category "Internet"
    -> set the indicator "Display PDF in browser"
    -> Reboot the machine
    This fix worrked for some people but many user are still experiencing the same thing even after changing the setting many times.
    Friends, Is there anything else might be creating the trouble here. Please let me know, and why it is that for some systems it is working and for it is not ?
    Thanks,

    There was a browser bug with IE in the past that seemed to span several browser versions.  It had to do with the interaction of the browser and the webserver.  The short version is that I had to toggle the caching option on the folder.
    Here's what I ended up doing for my client:
    Move their PDF documents into a subfolder called forms and all Flash animations into a subfolder called flash
    Marked all folders in the site to "Expire Immediately" (IIS -> highlight root folder -> Properties)
    Individually marked the "/forms" and "/flash" folders to toggle this caching option
    In this way, it allowed dynamic pages to deliver non-cached content (from the server's perspective) and it allowed binary downloads like Flash animations and PDF files to work as expected without errors.  The bug has to do with the cache-negotiation handshaking that goes on between the browser and server.
    This may not be what you're seeing but it's good to remember because I've seen it often:  the settings that you'd use to optimize a web applications don't seem to work for binary downloads like a PDF document.

  • Help! How to e-mail a PDF (from Pages) with active web links!

    I have been working on this for hours without any success! I would be so grateful for a brainy Apple wiz to help me out. I am creating a Pages document that has active web links in it. My goal is to e-mail my document with the active web links in it.
    So - If I export my Pages doc as a PDF to my desktop, the links work great! However - the moment I put that PDF into an email and send it the links become inactive. Is there any way to create a Pages document with web links > Export it as a PDF > Then mail with active (clickable) links? I have tried many times without success.
    If the answer to my question is no, does anyone have a tip for where I can create a PDF and mail it with active links? Will any of the Adobe programs work for this type of thing?
    Thanks so much!!
    Kristen

    Using Pages '09 v4.2.
    I just tested this. Assumption: You have the “Windows friendly attachments” checked in the attachments panel.
    Your Pages document is open. The web links are active. You want to get it into Mail.
    From the Pages menu bar, choose Share > Send Via Mail > PDF.
    Mail will open with a compose window. Your PDF will be attached as a full view document. You see the links present in the PDF.
    Now, click near the web links. This shows your PDF in blue. Now right-button click, and choose View as Icon from the pop-up panel.
    Now mail it to yourself on another account that Mail can open.
    You will see the web links in the PDF.
    Right-button click on a link and from the pop-up menu, choose Open with Safari.
    If you chose Quick Look, it would pop open the PDF and offer to open it further in your default PDF viewer. In my case, it is Adobe Reader.
    If Reader opens this PDF from the Mail attachment, the web links remain active.
    Does this solve your issue?
