PDF files display blank in Acrobat 9

Hi all:
I just upgraded to CS4 Master Collection from CS3 (MC) last week, and now I'm having bizarre display issues with PDFs I'm generating with Creative Suite applications. When I export PDFs from both Illustrator and InDesign and view them in Acrobat, they come up briefly and then the page immediately goes blank white and I can't see anything. It just goes away, including the page border outline...
Notes:
1. I try changing zoom percentage, and nothing shows up at any percentage.
2. Opening the same file in Reader 9 many times* shows the PDF correctly.
3. I have used every conceivable PDF Export setting combination to try and troubleshoot what check box or export option might be causing the issues, but I've not found any combination that eliminates or even helps the problem.
4. I have completely up-to-date display adapter drivers from the manufacturer's website.
5. I have the latest Acrobat 9 updates.
Thanks for reading!

My engineers are just starting to upgrade to Acrobat 9.0 standard.   We were forces to from out 6.0, which worked just fine.  So far only one person has noticed their screen going black and the toolbars disappearing.  He does not have any READER installed which shouldn't matter.  It appears from what I've read here there is no solution at this time.  It doesn't happen to him all the time but it's very frustrating when it does.  The only thing he can do is quit out of the window and start up another window.

  • PDF Files created by previous Acrobat versions

Has anyone had issues with previous scanned PDF files opening blank on a machine?  The files were created with Adobe Acrobat 6.  Opening them with Adobe Acrobat 8 and Adobe Reader 9, they show up blank.  If I forward them to another computer, they appear as they should.  Is this a .dll issue with Adobe?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.

Bug - Safari 5.1.5 breaks the keyword search of PDF files displayed on Safari.
After updating to Safari 5.1.5 with Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.1.3 on Mac OS X 10.6.8, it is not possible to search for keywords in PDF documents displayed on Safari.
I understand that it is a bug. Is there any way to fix it?
    Thanks.

    Hi...
    Try deleting a plugin...
Open the Finder. From the menu bar click Go > Go to Folder
    Typs this:    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
Move the Adobe PDF Browser plugin  (or PDF Browser plugin) to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that doesn't help, back to the Finder menu.
    Go > Go to Folder
    Type this:  ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safarfi/Cache.db
Move the Cache.db file to the Trash.
Quit then relaunch Safari to test.

  • Are there settings in Acrobat to enable a PDF file to open in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader by Default rather than open in a Browser

Are there settings in Acrobat to enable a PDF file to open in Acrobat or Acrobat Reader by Default rather than open in a Browser

There is a check box in the preference (under edit). I have not had great success with this setting, but that is what it is supposed to do. Don't expect it to happen in Chrome that has it's own PDF viewer (or the preview function on a MAC). You might also check the settings for your particular browser.

  • Xref table is missing when a pdf file is created with acrobat distiller 9.0.0

    Hi
I created a pdf file with the new acrobat distiller 9.0.0 and i noticed that the xref table is missing in it.
Whereas the pdf files which created in older version (acrobat distiller 7.0.5) had the xref tables.
As i have written a perl script to open the pdf files (used a ready made module downloaded form cpan.org). The script works fine with all old pdf files but fails when it tries to open the pdf files created with distiller 9.0.0.
Could i know is any thing changed on acrobat distiller 9.0.0 ?
    Thanks

  • No PDF file was created because Acrobat encountered an unidentified error.

    Product:
    Adobe Acrobat 8
    Windows XP SP3
    Problem:
when user try to combine multiple PDF files into one file from network drives (hence that user have full permissions), received this error:
    "Error (file skipped)
No PDF file was created because Acrobat encountered an unidentified error."
    Steps taken so far:
    - cleared windows temp files
    - cleared acrobat temp files
    - tried, same error
    - ran acrobat repair, tried it out, same error
    - made adjustments to "PDF Printer Properties per this article
    http://www.experts-exchange.com/Web_Development/Document_Imaging/Adobe_Acrobat/Q_23903725. html
    - tried again, no luck.
    - removed adobe acrobat and reinstalled it completely from scratch.
    - ran updates
    - tried again, no luck.
    - granted the user full permission access to acrobat folder under program files, still same error
    - then, copied files that I need to convert locally to the system and tried to combine them, it worked!
    - its not permission issue as I tried the same from my domain admin account and received the error.
    - also the user reported that acrobat takes 15 o 20 sec each time opening a file
    Any ideas?!
    Thanks!

If I change the properties to open as administrator, within the program I can combine pdfs over the network drive.
.  I can't drag and drop or combine pdfs from windows explorer and everytime I open acrobat it asks if it can make changes.
So it's still best to copy to c drive in order to use Combine and Portfolio features but would be really nice to use as designed.

Preview: In a group of PDF files in the same window, going to the next or a previous PDF file displays the bottom of PDF page by default, not the top of the PDF page. How do you change this? In Mac OS 10.9 and previous, going to the next or previous PDF file displays the top of the PDF by default. Is there a way to change this back? When I go to the next or previous PDF file, I want to first view the top of the page, not the bottom. This really doesn't make any sense. Any help? Thanks!

  • How to passw protect my pdf files generated by Adobe Acrobat?

I simply want to passw protect my pdf files generated by Adobe Acrobat. However the option as indicated by the helpdesk is not available in my pdf generator. I am working with apple? Can someone tell me how to pass protect my files?
Can some one help me out here?

    Hi josr,
You can password protect your files in Adobe Acrobat by choosing File > Properties when you have the PDF open, and clicking the Security tab. Here is a Help topic that goes into detail: Acrobat Help | Securing PDFs with passwords.
If you don't have Acrobat, you're welcome to give it a try! Feel free to download a 30-day trial from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat.html.

unable to combine files on acrobat 8 getting error message "no PDF file was created beacuse Acrobat encountered an unidentified error" Please help

A lot of the time the files can not be combined because of incompatible fonts, or at least font sets that could not be resolved. Maybe that will give you some direction to look at.

how to reduce a PDF file size under Adobe Acrobat Reader DC. The size is now 23MB; I need it to be less than 4MB. thanks

I've found in Pdf's many time when you go to Optimize a PDF and look at the font list there are often up to a 1/2dozen copies of a given font, say Helvetica, then that many Helvetica Bold, or Arial or Ariel Italic
What I do ie remove from list all but one copy of each different font. often dramatically reduces the size. also something lese is Flattening images will in some cases reduce a file size. I have run into a case where it actually made a PDF Larger.

  • PDF file displays different number of text blocks in Acrobat Pro CC 2014 and CS6 versions

    Hi,
I've inherited a file at work that displays different numbers of text blocks, depending on the version of Acrobat Pro used to view the file. Here's the specific issue:
    As viewed in CC 2014:
"Chapter 1 - Chapter One Title": Appears as two text blocks -- one for "Chapter 1 - " and one for "Chapter One Title"
    As viewed in CS 6:
"Chapter 1 - Chapter One Title": Appears as a single text block -- "Chapter 1 - Chapter One Title"
This occurs only with regard to single-digit chapter numbers that are whole numbers. So:
Chapter 1, Chapter 5, and Chapter 7 entries appear as two blocks in CC 2014, one block in CS6.
Chapter 2.0, Chapter 6.1, Chapter 10, entries appear in single blocks in both CC 2014 and CS6.
The PDF file was created -- I believe -- through the save-to-PDF feature in Word 2010.
    Any idea what's happening here?
    Thanks.
    David

First of all, there is no such thing as Acrobat CS6 or Acrobat CC 2014. We assume you are referring to Acrobat X and Acrobat XI respectively.
Secondly, how are you determining how many text blocks are in the PDF file? By use of the text touchup/edit function in Acrobat? If so, how this edit function displays text doesn't necessarily correspond to the actually underlying text fragments in the PDF file. In fact, sometimes it combines fragments based on heuristics. Those heuristics have varied with different version of Acrobat.
PDF as a file format doesn't know the context of the graphical objects such as text. There is no concept of a line, a sentence, a paragraph, a column, etc. in terms of text. Runs of text are context-insensitive. You will get “breaks” when switching between regular and italics or when unusual paragraph justification is involved.
Is the actual problem in trying to edit the text or something else?
If you post a file, and indicate what text we should look at, we can confirm what is actually going on in your file.

  • Some of my pdf files (since upgrade to Acrobat DC reader) have greyed-out blanks. How can I get rid of this so I can read what is obliterated?

I installed Acrobat Reader DC version 2015.007.20033 on May 3 as an upgrade to the previous version (which worked perfectly). Now some of my pdf files have greyed-out blocks obscuring the text (which I imagine is being hidden by the blocks). In some cases the whole document is illegible. What has happened? How do I get rid of the problem?

Don't know what the problem was, but it disappeared after uninstalling the programme and re-installing it. (It may have had something to do with the few preference changes I made in trying to customise the appearance to look like the previous Adobe version, but if so, I'm not clear which (one?) of them caused the grey-outs).

  • PDF file displays boxes instead of Japanese characters

    Hi,
I am creating PDF files with a custom third-party set of sortware tools (Infragistics NetAdvantage).
This particular PDF document contains Japanese text using the Meiryo font and this font is embedded into the PDF file. It works fine in Windows (using the Adobe Acrobat Reader application), even on a machine where Meiryo is not installed.
But when viewed on the iPad, the text is displayed as a bunch of empty boxes.
Also, I'm not sure if it's related, but when viewing the same document on Window XP using FoxIt (instead of the Adobe Acrobat Reader), the text is not shown at all - there's just an empty space and not even boxes.
I would love to attach a sample PDF file here, but I don't see any way to do that... is there a way to attach files to these questions?

So the empty boxes are indeed shown by built-in preview, and Adobe Reader is also not able to render the content and it appears as blank.
After investigation , it turns out that system fonts on ipad does not have the required glyphs ( ~ symbol ) to render these characters. This is Apple’s bug and you may have to report this issue , indicating that it is not rendered in Preview / i-books on the ipad.
    Sorry for the inconvenience.
    Thanks,
    -vaibhav

  • Why do some PDFs open partially blank in Acrobat X?

When I receive proofs via PDF from prints they appear on my screens as partially blank. The print out correctly on paper and open correctly on other computers but on mine they don't. At first I thought it was an issue with one printer company but now it is happening with our new printer company.
This is what the proof looks like when I open it in Acrobat X - mostly blank.
This is what happens when I print it to a new PDF file - some new items show but still mostly blank.
When I print it out it shows complete.
When I open it in Photoshop or if other staff open it on their computer the full proof shows.
What am I missing? I have Acrobat X on a machine running Windows 7 Home Edition 64 Bit. TIA

In Preferences Under Page Display make sure you are set to see Large Images.

  • Thin lines in pdf file displayed on mac

    Hi,
I don't know if this is the right place to bring this up.  So redirection elsewhere is appreciated!
I've noticed a problem with displaying certain pdf files on a mac.  The files are 2D filled plots produced by the free scientific software Yorick (http://yorick.sourceforge.net/).  It happens when I view it in Preview or Powerpoint on a mac.  But not if I use a pdf viewer on a unix system.  The yorick source code for a simple example is below.  I can't find a way to attach files to this messages or I'd include the pdf's.  Is there a way to do this?
Both png's are fine, and the pdf of the pli plot is fine.  pli assumes uniform grid spacing, is fast, and must use different graphics primitives than plf, which does not assume uniform grids (i.e. you can have non-square elements).  In this case both x and y grids really are uniform.  The problem is with the pdf of the plf plot.  Look at it in Preview, you should see some thin lines.  Put it in powerpoint and the same.  If you put some solid colored box in back of it, you'll see the color.  So the lines are transparent or something.
David Munro, the creator of Yorick, suggests it's an issue with anti-aliasing.
Anyway, the problem isn't that severe in this example, but in others (which don't have simple source code) it's more annoying.
Either way, any advice on this, or the right people to report this to, is appreciated.
    Cheers,
    David

As I suspected, the problem is that the other viewers are not savvy enough to handle the "stitching problem".
What looks like a single image is really a WHOLE LOT of single squares.  I took a snapshot of the Edit Object tool in Acrobat with all the objects selected.  See <https://photos-3.dropbox.com/i/o/R6asqv64sEP1Tf7eIEBfNbFbMw0F7qKEaFwfnXQVKLo/1644474/12950 96400/0fa9181>.
As you can see from that, each square is a separate image that needs to be rendered and if the viewer doesn't understand how to proper stitch the pieces together then you will get empty pixels (which appears as white lines).
Either contact the author of the program that authored the document and see about getting that fixed (if it's not you) and/or contact the other viewers about improving their products.
