PDF files don't show dimensions data

I work in a printing office and we have a file server full of PDF files (made with Illustrator CS1-> CS4). Before, we used a custom search program to search for PDF files but we came to the conclusion that it would be handier to use Bridge to search, because we'd get a thumbnail AND get the additional metadata (allowing us to sort according to size, colours, etc.)
The problem is, when I display a list of all our PDFs in Bridge, the "Dimensions in cm" in Metadata is empty! The only dimensions I see, are in pixels which, as you can imagine, is useless to us. Despite this, Acrobat correctly shows the file size in milimeters as you can see below (left screenshot). It remains a mystery to me why Bridge (made by the same company!) isn't capable of displaying this info which acrobat can clearly extract.
Is there a way to fix this? It seems like a glaring oversight if not - the option is clearly there but none of our PDFs show it.

I'm not sure i know what you mean because there's nothing to configure there. All you can do, is tick boxes and the dimension boxes are all ticked - you can see so in the screenshot otherwise they wouldn't show up. I also unticked "hide empty fields" because otherwise, it won't show them either. Yesterday I went through the entire list to see if there was more meta data that contained dimensions but there's none.

  • Downloaded PDF files don't show description or "i" link to summary

I am including a PDF file in a podcast. The xml has both an <itunes:subtitle> section and an <itunes:summary> section for the PDF <item>.
Before the PDF file is downloaded in iTunes the subtitle shows in the description column and the summary is available via the "i" link on the right side of the description column.
After the PDF file is downloaded in iTunes both the subtitle/description text and the "i" link disappear.
There seems to be no way to access that information once the PDF is downloaded. The same issue does not affect audio or video files.
Does anyone know if this is by design (why?) or is it a bug in iTunes?

  • PDF File from an internal table data

I have an internal table ready for grid display of a report. But according to the new requirement, it shouldn't create a Spool request as it is affecting the performance of the system (because its a huge file with 3000+ pages).
So, now we want to create a (non-editable) PDF File and store it in an application server.
From the forum, i see that i have only one option, which is to Convert internal table data to OTF Format and then to PDF.
Right now i am using  PRINT_TEXT to convert to OTF file and FM CONVERT_OTF for PDF file.
The challenges i am facing right now is..
    1. After getting the OTF file from PRINT_TEXT, i couldn't get the correct PDF File. It shows random characters instead..
    2. My internal table has 103 columns. So how should i accommodate data from all these columns into a single row on a PDF?
    3. I couldn't create a table kind of view/display in PDF
Please help/advice me on the above issue.
    Thanks,
    Sarada

    Hi,
103 columns need to be seen in at least 7 pages or more. Cant display in just 1 page.
I guess that better to create a smartforms and pass all the information from the table to the smartforms.
    There you can create multipages.
Probably, that huge table need to separete it in 7 tables, so each page will get the information from one table...
i will try to do sth like that.

    Miguel

  • Will going from Reader 3.1 to 5 cause loss of any files stored as PDF files done with 3.1?

Presently use Firefox Reader v. 3.1.4. Many files on my desk computer, operating on XP Pro, are stored in PDF files done with the 3.1.4 version. If I up date to the new 5.0 will these old files still open? Or will they be lost?
Worse case if FireFox Reader was to be removed from my computer what happens to these older files that were saved using Firefox Reader 3.1.4?
I am not experiencing any problems now, but the above questions are a concern, especially as this old computer continues to age.
    Thanks very much,

Hi, thanks for the very quick reply, although it doesn't really answer my question. As for not finding a Fire Fox Reader vr. 5 you should go to this link.
    http://download.cnet.com/Foxit-Reader/3000-10743_4-10313206.html
I'd appreciate any comments you have about this PDF reader in regard to my original question.
It all could be a mute point, mush like changing versions of Adobe, nothing seems to be lost or changed in the saved pdf files when changing versions in Adobe. Possibly Fire Fox 5 operates the same.

    Hi olivias,
It sounds like there may be some confusion on your system about what application should be associated with PDF files. You can reset filename associations by following the steps in these articles (depending on your operating system):

  • FLV file don't show on iPhones, iPads, etc.

I'm on a iMac with a 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 processor running 10.6.8. I build websites using Dreamweaver CS4 and all my media files are FLV files. I've noticed that none of the media shows on a iPhone, iPad, etc. Is there a media file format that I can use that works for browsers and will show on iPhones, iPod, etc.? I also noticed that SWF file don't show either. Any direction would be helpful.

Those are Flash content types. Flash doesn't exist on iOS, and won't exist on any future mobile platforms, according to Adobe.

  • Text files don't show on fillable form after saving on a mac

I have a fillable form with text and check fileds on it, if a user filles it on a windows pc and saves it all works fine, but if a user does the same thing on a MAC then the text fields don't show.

Avoid touching any PDF (in particular any PDF form file) with Preview.

  • Embedded PDF files do not show in Internet Explorer 11

    Hi,
We have several machines that cannot show embedded pdf files in Internet Explorer 11 with Adobe Reader as default pdf reader.
    Example from one pc:
OS: Windows 7 Enterprise SP1 x64 – all updates applied.
    IE 11 version: 11.0.9600.17239.
    Update Versions: 11.0.11 (KB2976627).
Adobe Reader: 11.0.08 (no further updates available).
As test example we have used: http://acroeng.adobe.com/Test_Files/browser_tests/embedded/embed2.html
We only get a blank page with two placeholders with a small black square with a white cross in each.
If we install Foxit Reader on the same pc, and sets it as default reader, everything works.
What do we do to solve the Adobe Reader problem?

Hi Pat - thanks for your reply.
We have already tried the TabProcGrowth registry change. It doesn't work. As mentioned, we use IE 11 on Windows 7, and not IE 10 as the article from Microsoft specifies.
As shown in the images above, the registry is set to 1 and the PDF's still don't show up embedded in the browser.
    Any other suggestions? Anyone?

  • My Church website PDF files no longer showing text.

November OK. December shows boxes, not text.
Please let me know why I can't see the text. Their tech person said all is normal on their end. I can open it in IE, but I don't want to use it. I don't want to download the PDF files, either.
    Please help!

    Glad that I could help.
Thank you for contacting the Mozilla support team.

As a work-around, tell Firefox to open the PDF using Adobe Reader. This will save a copy of the PDF to the temporary files on your computer. These files are wiped off of your hard drive periodically and should not take up space.
This method will not use up any more internet bandwidth than if you were to view it using the Firefox reader.
I will post more steps on how to tell Firefox to open the file using Adobe Reader below.
In order to change the default reader for PDF files (to not open PDF files with Firefox's internal PDF reader), follow these steps:
#Click the menu button [[Image:New Fx Menu]] and click Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac).
#In the Options (Preferences for Linux and Mac) window, select the ''Applications'' panel.
#In the ''Search'' field, type ''PDF''. You should find ''Portable Document Format (PDF)''.
#On the right hand side you should find an ''Action'' column. Use that to select your favorite PDF reader. In order to view PDF files in Firefox, choose ''Preview in Firefox''.

  • Concatenated PDF file does not show all content.

When I concatenate 2 single page pdf file into one pdf file, the concatenated page does not show all the content. It misses the last line on the 2nd page.
However the thumbnails view shows the missing line correctly.
Also, if I view the concatenated pdf into another pdf view, it shows the content correctly.

Upon further research in the merged pdf file, it appears the merged pdf file has 2 references to the same field "UFE_ISSUE_DATE".
If I edit the pdf file in the text editor and change one of the field name to "UFE_ISSUE_DATE_TEST", then the pdf gets rendered correctly with date value shown correctly!
So, we decided to use 2 different field names in each of the individual pdf for this field only.
But, what causes confusion is that we do have several other fields with same field name in each of the individual pdf file, but upon merge they appear correctly. Searching for such field name in the merged pdf file via text editor, I can see only 1 reference. Not sure, why this particular field "UFE_ISSUE_DATE" has 2 references in the merged pdf file.
    Any one has any thoughts?

  • PDF files don't display or save from websites

I am unable to now download and save a PDF file from a website.  I get either a blank window when I click on the PDF file link, or a message during the attempt to save that reads "The document “filename.pdf” could not be exported as “filename.pdf”."  I am also unable to print the file from a website or save as a PDF.
This problem is a recent development, occurring in both OS X 10.7.3 and 10.7.4 on my MacBook.  It occurs in both Safari 5.1.6 and Firefox 4.0.1.  Since it occurs on more than one browser, I'm pointing towards the OS. I use Adobe Reader 10.1.3.
The problem does not occur on my MacBook Pro using OS X 10.6.8, using an older version of Safari.
I just updated from X 10.7.3 to 10.7.4 but with no results.  I uninstalled Reader and reinstalled.  Same results.  Reader opens other PDF files on my hard drive with no difficulty.
    Suggestions?

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder... from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Sorting pdf files in FINDER according to date or name

Hi. I don't know much about apple computers I am contemplating buying a macbook, which I will use to store and view about 15,000 pdf files/articles (total memory ~ 15 gigs).
On windows explorer it is easy to sort by the date the file was created or by the name. Is this easy with Finder?
    Thanks.

    Very easy, especially by name.
You can do it in all different Finder views, adjust icons and texts sizes as you wish, choose a faster option with or without "preview" etc, very easy to set.
    As for sorting by date:
    As easy as by name,
except when file was not created by yourself: then it's often you'll have to use the sorting as the file was originally created.
    Also:
Still as easily as the rest, there are also some other kinds of Finder sorting: by kind, by size, by label...
Welcome to the world of Macs!
