PDF files seem to have extra steps to open in Safari since upgrade
Hello all.
I am currently running OS X version 10.9. When I used to visit a website with safari and open a PDF file, it just opened and I read it seamlessly. Now when I click on a PDF file the file is taken to the 'Downloads' area and then Adobe Reader launches. Everything works and the file is readable but it takes a few seconds to do this. It does not if I visit the same site on an IOS device. In that environment I click on the file and it immediately opens. I can then chose if I want to open the file in iBooks or another app, but I can read it without doing anything if I chose to.
Is there a way to make it so I can click on a PDF file and it will just open on my screen like it does on the iphone? I hate to complain because it is still working but it is taking a few extra steps.

Install this:
http://www.schubert-it.com/downloads/pdf-plugin-242.dmg
and put it in Internet plugin folder.
Restart safari.
When you open a PDF page with Safari, you see a button in the upper right corner of Safari. Pull it and you see a submenu to configure the plugin.

(Added formatting to log entries)I am seeing the same problem. I see slowdowns and beachballs in Safari very frequently, coincident with a long run of these memorystatus_thread messages. I also see huge amounts of swap/virtual memory being used, up to 19Gb (I have 4Gb of RAM). All the memorystatus_thread messages are associated with Apple processes, no other apps, and it all clears up if I use Chrome instead of Safari. It sounds very much like Safari has a memory leak associated with all it's interprocess communications with other apps.
I tried reinstalling Yosemite and that didn't solve it. There seems to be no way to roll back to an earlier release of Safari or install it separately (didn't MSFT get into a lot of trouble when it tied the browser to the OS, both for itself and its customers? Do we need to relearn that lesson?).

Hi. I have a Dell PC running Windows 7 64 bit. I have the latest version of Adobe Reader, It worked yesterday. Today I have job training to do that is due tomorrow morning and I can't open PDF files. I have to open a guide and read it and take a test tomorrow. I have deleted and reinstalled the application. I have rebooted. I have made sure my PDF's are associated with the program. Every PDF on my computer won't open and I get the same error message. It simply says Attempt to access invalid address. How can I fix this? Thanks.

I have seen this issue fixed for some users by modifying the following registry key:
The key is "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management" MoveImages
Set the key to 1 instead of 0 then reboot the machine.
In case you still face the issue try the following registry key change:
The only thing you have to do is rename the following key at the REGEDIT, and everything will be fine !!
BEFORE:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.exe
AFTER:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\iexplore.old
Note: Please take a backup of the registry before attempting this change.

My reader will not open a PDF file that I have downloaded from a government web site (an application form) - it states that the file is not good. I can open on the web site but not from my mac computer.

What browser are you using?
The blog post contains significant information related to Premiere Elements 12 Motion Tracking. But, if you cannot access it for some reason, then we will need to troubleshoot via communications in the thread.
SG has asked if you are able to create Motion Tracking effect using one of the graphics included with the program. We will watch for your response to him on that question. Please include in your message to him whether you can obtain your file to track the object using Organizer Tab or Project Assets routes as well as Graphics Tab.

SOLUTION
Various tutorials and online comments have pointed to places other than Graphics Tab where objects can be selected and used to track the moving object in the video when the Motion Tracking workspace is opened in the Expert or Quick workspace.
Organizer Tab, Expert or Quick workspace to access Elements Organizer 12. Cascade Windows and drag a video or photo from Elements Organizer into the yellow track box of Motion Tracking workspace.
Project Assets, Expert workspace. Drag text, video, or photos from opened Project Assets into the yellow track box of Motion Tracking workspace.
Graphics Tab, Expert or Quick workspace. Create a png file (graphic) or prtl file (text) and place it in Clip Arts in the Program Files of the program to have a permanent resource. Then from Graphics Tab, drag the newly created graphic or text object into yellow track box of Motion Tracking workspace.

Preview not opening pdf files unless they have an pdf extension
Preview will not open pdf that does not have a pdf extension. If I give a valid pdf file a random extension like .xxx, preview opens without windows. If I give it .jpg it opens with a questionmark in a window. If I give it pdf it open without a glitch.
Why cannot Preview detect whether a file is open-able or not an not give a **** about extension. This is not windows but a unix system
The problem exist when a pdf file is downloaded by firefox and not given a .pdf extention in the downloads folder. In Safari the file is opened without problems inside Safari.Yeah, but Preview wont open the file at all, even through the open dialog, all files not associated with preview are greyed out. Shouldn't a program open a file if told to?
Yes, I agree with you. I also could not open the files unless I changed their extensions.
Also the "file" command has no problem finding out it's a pdf. I believe its an obsolete thing specifying filetype on extension, and not on content. Is is possible to get preview to open the file depending on content and not on extention.
Like I said, I think this was a conscious choice that Apple made with OS X, but I'm not sure why the decided to go that way (maybe posting on one of the dev lists would give you the answer to that).

My macbookpro is not opening pdf sites from safari or firefox, it goes to the address but just gives me a black screen. I can however open a pdf file that I have saved on my HD, it opens on preview. any thoughts? osx 10.6.8

In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste (command-V) into the text box that opens, then press return.
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari, and test.
I've seen an unconfirmed report that the "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can also interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you might need to remove it as well, if applicable.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again. -
I have nine, 1-page PDF files that are accessible and need to combine into 1 PDF file. I have tried appending, adding and the combine PDFs process. The file created is not keeping my changes. The created file is partially accessible but I have to re-fix issues I had fixed in the single files. I need suggestions on what else can be done if any. Using Acrobat pro XI.
Out of habit, I tend to combine PDF files in the Page Thumbnails pane by right-click then "Insert Pages" -> "From File". For me, this preserves the tags from both documents, although the tags may have to be moved into the right location (if I recall correctly the tags for the inserted pages get put at the end of the tag structure, regardless of where the pages are inserted), If I first put the tags for the document to be inserted inside a container tag like Section, it makes the process easier. Moving that set of tags to the right place is the only re-fixing that I recall having to do. What behavior are you experiencing?

Using numbers for roster information. Imported from another program. Now seem to have extra headers, one listing name, address, etc. & another A, B, C. They don't mesh & can't get rid of either. All info there, but can't change width of columns.
I think my problem is that I have inadvertently created three tables (I only want one). I have included a screen shot of the light grey line under B and the words Table 1 behind it.

I can't open downloaded files within Mozilla Firefox Particularly PDF files. I have Adobe Acrobat on my machine . Do I need to import it to firefox if so how do I do it ?
Delete a possible user.js file and numbered prefs-##.js files and rename (or delete) the prefs.js file to reset all prefs to the default value including prefs set via user.js and prefs that are no longer supported in the current Firefox release.

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problem.

Why cant I open any pdf file from websites? I can open pdf files that I have downloaded.
When I try to open any pdf file that is on a website I can not open it. I have no problems with any pdf file that I have downloaded. I have Adobe X...... my OS is Windows 7 and I have upgraded to Firefox 4
What happens when you try? Have you saved to your computer and then tried to open it?

How do I prevent Adobe from taking my jpegs and making them pdf files? I have had to uninstall Adobe to access my photos as jpegs.
I would suggest you change your file associations so that jpgs open in a program other than Acrobat. Assuming you have a Windows machine, just go to the Start, and search for "file associations" ... it's part of the Control Panel.
Scroll down to the file type jpg, and set it to open with whatever graphic preview or editing program you have that you want to use as the default. From that point on, when you click on a jpg, it should not open Acrobat and instantly try to convert it to a pdf. -

Please let me know whether you are using Adobe Reader or signed up at https://cloud.acrobat.com/.
Also, try converting any other PDF file to word and check what happens.
Have you downloaded the file first onto your computer?

Try holding down CTRL as you launch iTunes to see if it will repair the drivers.
