Pdf ifilter OCR (Optical Character Recognition) 64 bit SharePoint

Folks,
          We have 3 windows server 2008 (2 front end and 1 index) 64 bit MOSS servers and 1 SQL Server 2008 64 bit server in our SharePoint environment.
We also have pdf iFilter 64 bit version from Adobe and we can successfully search PDF content. http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4025
However, scanned / OCR ed PDF content are not returned while indexing using the pdf iFilter 9 (64 bit). Then I followed http://blogs.msdn.com/ifilter/archive/2007/03/29/indexing-pdf-documents-with-adobe-reader-v-8-and-moss-2007.aspx except with  Adobe Reader 9, which indexes PDF files that are OCR ed.
Also, this appears to be 32 bit version of reader and I couldn't find 64 bit version of Adobe reader, however it works great. I can successfully search scanned pdf content from MOSS search interface. J
My question is
1. What is the different between 2 iFilters
2. Am I doing some thing that might significantly affect index server performance?
3. Why OCR not working on 64 bit iFilter version from Adobe?
Any thoughts would be great
Thanks
Parthi

Parthi,
Since the crawler just uses the registered iFilter for returning text, you should ask Adobe why there is a difference.

  • OCR (Optical Character Recognition)

    I have just bought this new printer/scanner.I am trying to use the OCR (Optical Character Recognition) text converter that came with my old printer.  When I scan as a photo the output comes as several pictures and all the text is missing.  When I scan as a document the output is in PDF.  And the OmniPage text converter is of no use.Does anyone have any suggestion.  Or should I just buy a new ink cartridge for my old Canon, and return this HP to Costco?Many thanks.

    Your answer is much appreciated.  I'll get round to trying the solution when I can whip up enough enthusiam.  Right now I'm a bit fed up with trying to get the machine sorted out!  Probably not so much the machine as the operator, it's way too hot here today.  33 deg celcius.I am a bit unsure if it will do the trick, but it's the best aswer so far!Thank you

  • What OCR (optical Character recognition) software is compatible with iMac?

    What OCR (optical Character recognition) software is compatible with iMac?
    I am using OS X 10.9.1 on my iMac with an Epson CX8600 printer/scanner.

    My new Brother multifunction came with Presto PageManager. I can't recommend that it in the least. Its OCR is terribly inaccurate to the point of being unusable in my tests. Even normal sentences came out mashed together.
    I wanted to try IRIS, but it has no test version, just videos, that I could find, and emails to them just led to a Windows demo that is irrelevant. They ignored my email asking about a Mac demo, so I could not even try it out. That pretty much knocks it out of the running for me as this software is too expensive to just buy based on their promotional videos alone.
    Then there's Vuescan, and it's not too bad for OCR and supports about every device you could possibly conceive of using, and that's a plus. It was fairly accurate, but not as accurate as Finereader Pro. The interface is a bit complex to my taste.
    I've been testing out ABBYY Finereader Pro, and they do have a demo, and so far it seems to be the most accurate of what I've been able to test. It gets pretty close to everything on English and Spanish, and supports most common languages (check the list on their website). It even properly recognized syllables of phonetic Tibetan (using Roman alphabet, but it will not detect Tibetan). The UI is pretty good, but not perfect and there's no way to train for odd words you might need. I haven't tried it for Chinese or Japanese, but for my purposes, unless I find something more economical, I'll buy this one for its accuracy.
    I really suggest you download demos and try them for yourself as none of these are particularly cheap

  • Optical character recognition--how do I scan a document to text I can edit.

    Optical character recognition--how do I scan a document to text I can edit?

    You first scan the document to a PDF. Then you run OCR from within Acrobat. Depending on your setup, the OCR may be run automatically.
    If you want to edit so the changes show on the screen, you will need to use ClearScan. The other two searchable options put the OCR text in a layer behind the image of your original document.

  • Scanning in OCR (optical Character Reading) mode

    Dear Sirs,
    My printer HP 4507 cannot scan in OCR mode even though I choose the option (HP ENVY 4500 series software and HP 4507 printer) "Document to File" (PDF), output type:Black&White, resolution:200 dpi, Item Type: Document, File Type: PDF.
    After scanning process, at the end, even in PDF File type the character are scanned as image only not in the text mode.  In another words, I cannot copy the text from PDF file to MS Word processor.
    If I am to acquire OCR software first to perform scanning in text mode, where can I obtain this OCR software for HP 4507 printer?
    Microsoft Office Document Scanning application cannot recognize or find the HP  4507 Scanner when it was supposed to.
    In this matter, a support would be much appreaciated.
    With regards,
    rakam

    Hello rakam,
    The HP Envy 4500 model does not support any OCR functionality withn the HP Software, for that you wlill need any 3rd party software which support a such.
    You may use any 3rd part OCR solution to scan as editable text.
    If you have Microsoft Office suite there is a good chance the office suite provide this kind of capabilities:
    Office 2007 or 2010:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/14595/ocr-anything-with-onenote-2007-and-2010/
    Office 2003:
    http://agsci.psu.edu/it/how-to/perform-ocr-with-microsoft-office-2003-document-imaging
    As I understand you experience issues with the solutions above, that may happen due to non-working Windows Services.
    Follow these steps which might be applicable for a such, as well ensure the Windows Service as described within Solution 3:
    http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03586087/
    For any issues, let me know what connection type you use, as well disable any firewall software is used and try again.

  • Does Adobe Export PDF include OCR ?

    does Adobe Export PDF provide OCR ?

    Yes. Adobe ExportPDF uses optical character recognition (OCR) technology to turn scanned images into digital text, which is then saved as editable text in your new Word document. You may also select the language you would like ExportPDF to recognize text in--English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, or Japanese.

  • Memory Problems with Adobe PDF iFilter for 64-bit

    In preparation to rebuild my Windows Search Index, I installed the Adobe PDF iFilter for 64-bit on my system (Vista Business 64).  When I finally rebuilt the index, I wasn't too surprised by what I saw happen, namely, the SearchFilter.exe process would kick in whenever I wasn't using the system and just eat RAM.  One time I turned it on and it had allocated over 4,000 MB (and my system only has 4,030 MB available) so of course it was forcing all the other processes to hard fault (ie. everything was moving like molasses--for example, it took 20 minutes to put the thing to sleep).  But I just let it do it's work, figuring that perhaps this was to be expected relative to the small library of PDF's that I've accumulated on my computer, ranging from LaTeX generated text files, to containers for hi-res scans.  So, after a day and a half of basically not using my laptop, everything finally calmed down and I enjoyed the benefits of searching the content of my library from the Windows Start menu--for a short while.
    However, to my dismay I've encountered the problem that this freezing of my computer would now occur after everytime I download a new PDF (in this particular case they were Google Books scans) and then left the computer to idle.  Again, the SearchFilter.exe would allocate all of my RAM for itself and just push everything else onto the Virtual RAM, which means the SLOWEST possibly fetching you can get.  I had to uninstall as this was making my computer unusable for 15-30 minutes after each idle. Everything is back in working order without the iFilter, but I would like to know if anyone has reported such problems on x64 systems.  Obviously, I will also report the problem to Microsoft, since the search engine should certainly have the precaution to handle such memory problems.   However, it is a problem that is created by the Adobe PDF iFilter interacting with the Windows Search engine.

    Hello,
    We believe we have figured this out.  It looks like it has to do with the length of the default folder location for the Adobe iFilter.
    I was able to reproduce the issue and the following resolved it for me.  See if this resolves it for you all as well.
    Here is how to get Adobe Version 11 PDF filter to work.
     1 . If you haven’t already, run the following in SQL Server:
    Sp_fulltext_service ‘Load_os_resources’, 1
    Go
    --you might also need to run:
    sp_fulltext_service ‘Verify_signature’,0  --This is used to validate trusted iFilters. 0 disables it. So use with caution.
    --go
    2. Stop SQL Server.  (Make sure FDHost.exe stops)
    3.
    Uninstall the Adobe ifilter (because it defaulted to having spaces or the folder name is too long).
    4.
    Reinstall the Adobe iFilter and when it prompts for where to install it, change it to: C:\Program Files\Adobe\PDFiFilter
    5.  Once the installation finishes, go the computer’s Environment variables. Add the following to the PATH.
    C:\Program Files\Adobe\PDFiFilter\BIN
    NOTE: it must include the BIN folder
    NOTE: If you had the OLD location that included spaces, remove it from the path environment variable.
    6. Start SQL Server
    7.  IF you had an existing Full-text index on PDFs, drop the full-text index and recreate it.
    8. You should now get results when you run sys.dm_fts_index_keywords('db','tblname')  --Note: Change db to be the actual database name and tblname to be the actual table name.
     Give this a try and see if this fixes yours.
    Sincerely,
    Rob Beene, MSFT

  • Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms + temp folders in the root

    Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms creates temp folders for some pdfs with attachments in the root of Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 bit machine. Do you know how to solve it?

    After having tried all the different suggestions out there I "stumbled" on the REAL solution to this problem (for me at least).
    Ensure that the "Windows Search" service has "Allow service to interact with desktop" enabled:
    After enabling this you need to restart the service.
    Please note that this fix alone (not doing anything else) solves the problem :-)

  • Issue with Adobe PDF IFilter 64 bit

    Hi All,
    I am facing issue while using Adobe IFilter for 64 bit, the section of code mentioned below is used to load IFilter for PDF IFilter 64 bit using IPersist interface.
    LibHndl = LoadLibrary(strDLLName.c_str());
    if(LibHndl)
                     FnPtr_DllGetClassObject fnDLCO = NULL;
                     // Add to the load list.
                     fnDLCO = (FnPtr_DllGetClassObject)GetProcAddress(LibHndl, "DllGetClassObject");
                     if(NULL != fnDLCO)
                         IClassFactory* pICF = NULL;
                         hrslt = fnDLCO(objChachedIFilterNode.m_iidFilterPersistance, IID_IClassFactory, (LPVOID *)&pICF);
                         if( ( S_OK == hrslt ) && (NULL != pICF) )
                             IFilter *pobjIfilter = NULL;
                              hrslt = pICF->CreateInstance(pUnkOuter, IID_IFilter, (void**)&(pObjIfiter));
                             if( ( S_OK == hrslt ) && (NULL != pObjIfiter) )
                                 IPersistStream* persistStream = NULL;
                                 hrslt = pObjIfiter->QueryInterface(IID_IPersistStream, (void**)&persistStream);
    with this pointers to IFilter and IPersistStream for Adobe PDF filter 64 bit have been obtained then the code section below is used to load the IFilter
            size_t dwReadSize = 0;
             pFile = fopen(pszFileName, "rb"); //pszFileName: complete path of pdf file
             if(NULL != pFile)
                 if(0 == fseek(pFile, 0L, SEEK_END))
                     dwSize = ftell(pFile);
                     dwFileSize = dwSize;
                     fseek(pFile, 0L, SEEK_SET);
                       m_pbyDataBuffer  = (unsigned char  *)GlobalAlloc(GPTR, dwSize);
                        bool bolReadFile = false;
                 if(NULL != m_pbyDataBuffer)
                     dwReadSize = fread(m_pbyDataBuffer, 1, dwSize, pFile);
                 hStreamResult = CreateStreamOnHGlobal(NULL, TRUE, &m_pIStreamBuffer);                   //m_pIStreamBuffer: is pointer to IStream
                 if(NULL != m_pIStreamBuffer)
                     LARGE_INTEGER iLarge = {0};
                     m_pIStreamBuffer->Seek(iLarge, STREAM_SEEK_SET, NULL);
                     ULARGE_INTEGER uInt = {0};
                     ULONG dwBytesWritten = 0;
                     m_pIStreamBuffer->SetSize(uInt);
                     if(NULL != m_pbySecDataBuffer)
                         hStreamResult = m_pIStreamBuffer->Write((void const*)m_pbySecDataBuffer, (ULONG)dwSize, &dwBytesWritten);
                     else
                         hStreamResult = m_pIStreamBuffer->Write((void const*)m_pbyDataBuffer, (ULONG)dwSize, &dwBytesWritten);
                 fclose(pFile);
                 pFile = NULL;
             if(S_OK == hStreamResult)
                 if((NULL != objCIFilterExNode.m_pObjIfiter) &&\
                     (NULL != objCIFilterExNode.m_pObjIPersistStream))
                     m_pGenericFilter = objCIFilterExNode.m_pObjIfiter;
                     m_pPersistStream = objCIFilterExNode.m_pObjIPersistStream;
                     if(NULL != m_pIStreamBuffer)
                         hReturnValue = m_pPersistStream->Load(m_pIStreamBuffer);
    this entire piece of code is working completely fine in debug mode where as in release mode the same thing is causing hang once the control reaches to hReturnValue = m_pPersistStream->Load(m_pIStreamBuffer); statement i.e. execution of this statement is causing the hang in application in release mode and this is happening only in case of pdf files while for all the other extensions files everything is working fine in both debug as well as release mode i.e. loading of all other IFilters is working fine.
    kindly help to resolve this problem for pdf files.
    Thanks

  • PDF iFilter 9 Not Working In Windows 7 x64

    When I first started playing around with pdf ifilters over a month ago, I had Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard version 8.2.4 installed.  It is what shipped with my ScanSnap S510 that I bought about 1-1/2 years ago.  At some point, I read that for Win7 x64, I needed Adobe Reader 9, so I installed version 9.3.4.  Then I read, NO, don't install different versions at the same time.  AARRGGHH!
    So, on Sept 10, I uninstalled both versions and only put back Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard version 8.2.4.  That is how I am set up now.  Here are the steps I took today.  Maybe someone can see either something I did wrong or find a step I missed.
    1. Installed the Adobe ifilter - PDFFilter64installer.msi
    2. Opened Indexing Options-->Advanced-->File Types and checked the pdf and pdfxml boxes (next to the pdf file type, it does say "PDF Filter")
    3. Under, "How should this file be indexed?" I made sure "Index Properties and File Contents" was selected.
    4. Opened System Properties-->Environment Variables and edited the Path Variable so it now contains - %SystemRoot%\system32;%SystemRoot%;%SystemRoot%\System32\Wbem;%SYSTEMROOT%\System32\Windo wsPowerShell\v1.0\;C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\Bluetooth Software\;C:\Program Files\ThinkPad\Bluetooth Software\syswow64;C:\Program Files\Intel\WiFi\bin\;C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intel\WirelessCommon\;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Lenovo;C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Ulead Systems\MPEG;C:\Program Files (x86)\Lenovo\Access Connections\;C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms\bin
    5. Rebooted
    6. Opened Indexing Options-->Advanced and clicked on the "Rebuild" button at which point it started indexing.
    It indexed 39,705 files in about 30 minutes - not a good sign, too quick.  Of those, 4,365 are pdf files.  My pdf files are a mix of documents downloaded from company websites (like monthly statements), scanned and OCR'ed with my ScanSnap S510; scanned with an HP AIO and OCR'ed with the HP software; scanned on an HP AIO using Acrobat 8 Standard and OCR'ed with Acrobat 8 Standard.
    I tried a test.  There are at least 28 pdf files, downloaded from 2 different financial websites, that contain the very unique last name of my financial advisor.  These are NOT scanned and OCR'ed paper pages.  I opened several of the files individually with Acrobat 8 Standard and made sure I could search & find his name within the documents - his name was found every time.  I closed the documents and Acrobat 8 Standard.  I clicked on the Windows Start button and typed his last name.  It found 9 Word documents, a whole bunch of email messages - and 1 stinking pdf file!?!
    What is wrong?
    Any & all ideas, thoughts & suggestions are appreciated.
    Thanks!

    So, I opened a Customer Support case with Adobe.
    Today, I get their response.  The first line says it all.  The rest of it is just standard yada and was a waste of time if they had bothered to read what I sent them.  I've already done what they cut & pasted.
    The status of my case has been changed to "Withdrawn."  So much for Adobe customer support.
    Here's their response:
    "I regret to inform you that we have not tested it yet on windows 7
    platform. However I would like to inform you that Please follow the
    steps mentioned below:
    1. Download and extract the contents of "PDFiFilter64installer.zip" to
    your local drive.( FROM THE LINK MENTIONED BELOW):
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4025
    2. Double click "PDFFilter64installer.msi" to launch the installer.
    3. Follow the instructions in the installer wizard to complete the
    installation.
    After installing the PDF iFilter, it is recommended that you set your
    system PATH environment variable to the "bin" folder of the "Ifilter"
    installation. For example, from the "Control
    Panel\System\Advanced\Environment Variables" tab, append to PATH
    "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms\bin\"
    and then restart the computer."

  • How to get PDF iFilter to recognize "pdf" document_type instead of ".pdf" in SQL Server 2012

    Hi,
    If this isn't the correct forum for this question, I apologize.
    I am running SQL Server 2012 on a Windows 7 Pro (64-bit) laptop and wish to be able to perform Full-Text searches against the contents of PDF files that have been loaded into my database using a FileTable. I have not been able to get the PDF iFilter v11.0 working whatsoever so I uninstalled it and installed v9.0 of the Adobe PDF iFilter.  I have confirmed that this filtering works on PDF documents I've inserted into a regular table and specified the file_type as '.pdf'.  However, when SQL Server loads the documents into a FileTable, the filter_type is set to 'pdf' (note: the period is not included -- ".pdf").  When I issue the ALTER FULLTEXT INDEX <tablename> START FULL POPULATION, no indexing occurs against the FILETABLE.
    I've examined the Full-Text Search crawl log and there are no errors occurring. Simply messages stating the population is starting and then completed.
    I've searched the forums here and elsewhere and haven't been able to find a work-around for this.
    Is there any way to get the PDF iFilter to recognize the 'pdf' filter_type in addition to the '.pdf' filter_type?
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Steve
