PDF = Illustrator or InDesign = PDF

I have Adobe CS4 Premium including Acrobat Pro 9.4.4 running on Mac OS X 10.6.7 on a Mac Pro 3,1 with 8GB RAM.  I have received a .PDF file as an attachment to an email.  The file  contains a floor plan for the floor in a building where I have an office.  The floor plan is more of a simple diagram than it is a real floor plan.  There are no security issues or copyright issues involved.
I want to place lines of tiny footprints from a couple of outside entry doors to the door of my office showing persons how to navigate the halls to find my office. I will then make a new .PDF file that I will attach to emails to clients that confirm appointments to be held in my office.  This will eliminate confusion that some people have in following written instructions to my office.
I need assistance on how to take the image from the incoming PDF and place it in another Adobe application such as Illustrator 14.0.0 or InDesign 6.0.6 (which I use most frequently) where I can insert the tiny footprints and then save or export the updated document as a PDF.  Thank you in advance for any assistance you can give.

You REALLY don't want to scan a PDF just to edit it - the floor plan is almost certainly a vector, converting it to a TIFF scan will ruin the quality and massively increase the file size. It'd be like scanning a Word document just so you can correct a typo using Microsoft Paint!
As others have explained you can open the PDF in Illustrator and modify it - even if you don't have the original fonts, unless you're editing those text elements it doesn't matter - there will be a warning but that's all, as the PDF will have subset-embedded the characters (if it didn't, you wouldn't see anything without the font installed).
If you want a non-destructive solution for Photoshop, import the PDF, create a new layer, draw your footprints on that layer, then delete the PDF layer and export only your footprints as a new PDF. Then in Acrobat, use the tools on the layers navigation pane to import your footprints onto the original file as a new layer.

  • CS6 Illustrator and InDesign colours are changed when the PDF is saved.

CS6 Illustrator and InDesign colours are changing when the saved PDFs are displayed on some different computers and for digital print output. I have ensured that the colours are all CMYK and tried different adjustments like preserving the numbers and the like but nothing is working. It prints properly on my inkjet and has displayed properly on different computers.

You need to read up on color management, color profiles and all that....

  • Jagged vector graphics from Illustrator in Indesign

Using CS3, Leopard, have all updates.
I'm having problems with vector graphics created in Illustrator getting jagged when dragged from Illustrator to Indesign (or copied and pasted or placed as Illustrator file). They look jagged (stair stepped) in InDesign, also in Acrobat after exporting a pdf, and after printing. The vector image in question is a rectangle with rounded corners with an "Envelope Distort - make with warp" applied to it. Is the problem that I'm trying to drag an envelope distorted graphic into InDesign? Are there settings to make this work?

"They look jagged (stair stepped) in InDesign, also in Acrobat after exporting a pdf, and after printing."
Doesn't sound like a screen preview issue to me.
If a placed AI file has jagged edges on print and in PDF, but looks good in Illy, then something is amiss. Your transparency settings could be set to rasterize the line art. Make sure you're using one of the canned flattener presets (high, med, low) if there is any transparency in your page (little checkered icon by the page icon in the page palette).

  • Copy & Paste from Illustrator to InDesign CS4

    Hi,
I am aware that there are issues when copying/pasting from Illustrator to InDesign, in particular:
    http://help.adobe.com/en_US/InDesign/6.0/WSa285fff53dea4f8617383751001ea8cb3f-6bdda.html
    I have the following problems:
1- I copy and paste text from Illustrator to InDesign on the same platform and some (not all) of the text is converted to outline in InDesign. The same font is available to both applications. Why this behaviour?
2- I copy and paste objects containing text from Illustrator to InDesign and some of the objects appear to have moved respective positions when pasted into InDesign. Is this to be expected?
Are there solutions to these problems? Note that if I expand everything in Illustrator prior to copying and pasting into InDesign, none of these issues occur, but everything is obviously in outline form, with the limitations it entails.
My clipboard settings are as indicated in the link above, but I have tried other settings with no more luck.
(Important: Before pasting a graphic, make sure that Illustrator is configured to copy as AICB (see Illustrator Help). In InDesign, make sure that Prefer PDF When Pasting isn’t selected in the Clipboard Handling preferences. If these options aren’t set properly, the Illustrator graphic cannot be edited in InDesign.)
It is not practical for me to create an Illustrator file for each of the Illustrator graphics and import those files via Place into InDesign. I must use Copy/Paste.
    I use CS4.
    Thanks.

You can copy/paste from Illy to ID by selecting the text with the type tool in Illy and then pasting it into ID. You will not be able to maintain the formatting. If you want to maintain the appearance the text will be converted to outlines.
If you need to get anything other than very simple objects from Illy to ID then you should save as AI and use the file > place command to place those objects as linked graphics into ID.
Your closing statement is irrelevant. Whether you like it or not, this is the way it is.

  • CS3 - Illustrator and InDesign quits when trying to print

    Hi.
I have posted this on the Illustrator forum as well.
I have just bought a new iMac i7 running OSX 10.7.2. I have reinstalled my version of CS3 and I can open all elements - Illustrator, Photoshop and InDesign.
The problem I am having is that Illustrator and InDesign quit when I try to print. It happens when I use 'command P' and when I go through the file menu. Photoshop doesn't quit when printing.
I can make PDFs of the files and I can print those (although sometimes the PDF won't print through my RIP software).
OS is updated to the latest version. All printer software and RIP is the latest version. InDesign also quit a couple of thimes when I was just selecting a line of type. i
It did it a few times when selecting the same line. I restarted the Mac and all seems OK with that now but I still can't print.
Can anyone shed any light onto this? I tried Adobe and they don't support CS3 any more and their Technical Department suggetsed I try this forum.
I don't want the expense of upgrading my CS3 at the moment.
    Thanks
    Roger

I have had a reply on the Illustrator forum and it has worked for me.

  • CS4 question re:Illustrator and InDesign

Mordy mentioned increased support with Illustrator and InDesign.
Can anyone enlighten me on what the support is? Can InDesign place native Illustrator files WITHOUT having the AI files saved with pdf compatibility?
    Thank you in advance.

No, I just chuckled when I read it.
However, my questioned has to do with client submitted art where the client does not save it with pdf compatibility and does not supply supporting links and fonts. I most likely have the fonts, but I can do nothing with the missing links.
Anyway, I doubted this would work but I am curious what Mordy meant with easier interaction between Illustrator and InDesign.

  • Convert illustrator to inDesign

    Hi guys,
I have a trifold piece which is created in illustrator. There're two sides of this trifold. Inside and outside, each in a separated illustrator doc. It has vector logos, place photoshop EPS images, vector shapes and text. My printer said he needs an inDesign file. Since I'm mainly a web designer who never actually used inDesign before. Is there anyway I can convert Illustrator into InDesign? I can convert all text into outline if that makes things easier. Ideally, I'd like to preserve all alignment and layout of the page.
    Is it possible?
    Thanks.
    Shaun

Although it is true, you can deliver a PDF, there is a way to get a PDF natively into InDeisgn. Here is a a how-to video on a product I represent called PDF2DTP for InDeisgn. In this case, it can also be used to convert an Illustrator artwork file into a brand-new InDeisgn layout, with active fonts, vector obects and everything converted over:
    Maybe that will assist.

  • Can I have a decreased / cheaper monthly priced membership for some time, by keeping active only Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, InDesign CC and Acrobat?

Hello, and good evening from Athens, Greece.
I would like to ask a question concerning my CC membership.
I’ve started 1 and a half year ago by paying 29,99 € for the entire CC (all programs). Now, it’s 49,99 € and I’m having a really difficult time to keep it this way. I’m living in a country which is in the middle of crisis and my profession as a graphic designer, is not an exception to reduced spendings on advertising.
My question is, can I have a decreased / cheaper monthly priced membership for some time, by keeping active only Photoshop CC, Illustrator CC, InDesign CC and Acrobat? I don’t need for now the other apps. Can I have a membership plan only for those applications? I would very much appreciate your respond, a help and a solution to my issue.
    Thank you very much.
    Michael.

  • Printing problem with Epson R290 Illustrator and inDesign

I am running CS2 on Leopard and have recently purchased an Epson R290. The first time I used it with Illustrator and InDesign it worked fine but now whenever I print anything it prints a tiny version (about a sixth of the real size) of the design in the top left corner of the page. It does this both with new documents and old ones that used to print ok.

Since I posted the message about this problem I have discovered that it can be worked around by choosing a higher quality print. ie if you choose plain paper when printing from Illustrator or InDesign the printer prints a reduced size image but if you choose Ink jet mat or glossy the print comes out fine. I don't have this problem with Photoshop but that may be that I always print high quality from that application. I don't use Appleworks Draw so don't know whether this solves the problem for that application but iWork documents print ok.

  • Adobe Illustrator and InDesign CS5 crash when trying to place images. Happens around 5+ times a day.

    Hi there
This Mac is quite new and was originally a migration (using Migration Assistant) from an older Mac.
Illustrator and InDesign in CS5 were both crashing often and most of the time it's when placing an image (in either application) – it doesn't crash each time I try to place an image, but 90% of the crashes are when placing an image.
We tried lots of things, like cleaning out the fonts, clearing font caches etc. After several months of that, we decided to wipe the Mac clean and start from scratch. It has been reformatted with a clean install of the OS and only minimal additional software added. Although quite a few fonts have been reinstalled, they all validate in Font Book.
One other thing of note is that the Adobe Updater fails to complete an update and so we have had to update each application manually from the Adobe website.
I would be so grateful someone could help shed some light on what is going on. Here's an EtreCheck report. Can also provide crash reports from the Console if useful.
    Thanks!
