PDF Import

How do I import a PDF into InDesign C5.5?

By using the Place command from the File menu. Be advised that this will treat the PDF pages as images and will not allow editing of the content.

  • PDF Import filter for PM6.5

I'm using PM 6.5 with XP. I've installed the PDF import filter as directed. Under "Place" PDF is still not recognized nor does it show as an option when further attempts to place. It also does not show in the list of filters under CTRL-"About PageMaker" in the Help menu.
Requirements mention Windows NT. XP is not mentioned. Has anyone been able to get this to work with XP?  If so what might I be doing wrong?

Sounds like the PDF import filter is missing, but it will only import very early PDF versions - 1.3?
You can install the import filter from your installation CD-ROM using the Custom installation option.

  • Multipage PDF imported at 100% - can I resize all doc pages to auto snap to the PDF size?

    Hi all,
I've got a popular multipage PDF import script that I can run and import PDF'S into indesign. I use this to import every page at 100%, usually these are A1 in size but they do differ - Is there a way to adapt it to automatically change all document page sizes to match the imported pdf size?
Most of these PDF import scripts have options to fit the pdf's to the page, I need the other way around - to look at the size of the pdf page being imported and set the doc size so the PDF fits on it!
    Any ideas?
Even if anyone has a script to resize a one page document to fit a placed graphic frame within it - that would be extremely helpful!
    Thanks

Try this script from Roland Dreger: Fotobuch mit Adobe InDesign — Roland Dreger, Grafikdesign .

  • PDF Import error "doesn't contain a 'Art' crop type"

I am creating Proceedings for a conference that consists of research papers. Most of these papers are exported to PDF from some flavor or LaTeX. I need to import these PDFs into InDesign.
Most of the time, this works fine, but this particular batch of papers is putting up a real fight:
When I get this error, simply opening the PDF and performing a "Save As" does not work. Selecting a different crop type doesn't work. Exporting to postscript and distilling usually works, but it's quite time consuming and also adds another step to the process where something can go wrong.
Does anyone know what this error means and if there is a better way to deal with it? Asking the authors to fix their PDFs is not an option, take my word for it.
    Thanks,
    Michele

@Michele – if placing PDFs you have import options in the dialog of selecting a PDF file.
Tell InDesign to "crop" these PDFs to "Media". That should work.
More information about the "boxes" in PDFs here:
The PDF page boxes: MediaBox, CropBox, BleedBox, TrimBox, ArtBox
Or use the search engine of your choice to find even more on this topic.

  • PDF - Importing through Data Manager  -

I am performing following steps. In the data manager, I am trying to import the PDF file. Then link it to the Main Table.
While importing I am using "Link to Orginal File Only"
PDF file is present in the share folder and the path of share folder does not have spaces. I get the following error message
"There was an error opening this document. This file cannot be found".
Actually file is available as well as path is correct and also acees to the sahre folder.
I tried same thing through local drive from my desktop. I encounter the same message.
When, I go and see PDFs table in the repository, I can see a record inserted with the correct path. I am not able top open up the PDF using Object --> View PDF.
    I am using MDM 7.1 SP 05.
    Please share your experience.

Please let me know what version of MDM you are using... Can you give a try by uploading pdf from your local system.. This will make sure that there has nothing to do with the shared drive..
    Please revert with the results.

  • Pdf import impossible in iWork 2.0

I received iWork some days ago, and tried a few experiments…As word docs could open easily in iWork, I have been unable to import pdf files. I have Acrobat Pro 7.05 Professional, with which all these documents open, and which some have been made with Acrobat.
In the box, all pdf files are grayed…
I sent yesterday a message to Apple about that fact, which I consider as a bug.
Anyone succeded in imprt of pdf?
    Thanks for any clue

You cannot "open" a PDF file and edit it as your main document. That is not what the PDF format is for. You will notice that even with Adobe Acrobat there are very strong limitations on what modifications you can make to that mostly static file format.
However, you can "insert" the first page of a PDF file into a Pages document as an image. (Insert > Choose... or just drag the PDF onto an open Pages document.)

  • PDF import suddenly adds tone to white

Hi, I've been receiving the same basic files from a client for a few years now. The Illustrator (15.10.) file is saved as an Acrobat (10.1.3) PDF then opened in Photoshop (12.1 x64).
In the art is a 50% grey blur like shadow that's some imported raster shape. That blur is over the artboard, with no further tone, color or layers beneath it, so, theoretically, it's on white. Up until this current set of files i'd have no problems importing the pdf in Photoshop, flattening and saving, the blur would transition to white and everything was good. But now, even though when still layered it shows the white to be 0/0/0/0 in cmyk, as soon as I flatten it, that white area is now 0/0/0/3.
I've gone through the Illustrator file and cannot find an new elements, and when I take a previous PDF who's tif file is fine, and open that pdf in Photoshop, I get the same addition of tone. So this tells me something has changed in Photoshop, be it a setting or preference that's been altered.
Can anyone suggest any place to check?

It could be a number of things quite frankly that is creating a scum dot. Color managlement is highly suspect so poke around for about 5 hours and see what you come up with. That's pretty much the process in which you are given considering how well it's implemented across all Adobe products. Get back to us when you find you are at your wits end to share the beauty in all its glory.

  • PDF import images issue

My question is, I am importing a 23-page PDF with 26 images
in it. After importing into RH7, the image files are created, but
most are just gray rectangles with white dotted lines around them.
Did I import incorrctly? Is this a known bug?

  • InDesign PDF importing to Corel Draw - problem

    Hi,
I wonder if anyone has come across this problem, we have several designers in the office, all using either InDesign or Corel Draw X3 (all on PC).
Every time we import a PDF that has originated from InDesign into Corel Draw, the file corrupts. Most commonly, the text appears as Chinese writing and makes no sense.
When exporting the PDF from InDesign, all the text is set to curves, so I am not even sure why Corel is recognising the text elements as text, when they have been set to curves.
I have tried various export options from InDesign with no luck.
    Help!!

When exporting the PDF from InDesign, all the text is set to curves, so I am not even sure why Corel is recognising the text elements as text, when they have been set to curves.
That would be Outlines, actually. Sorry, but what you are describing here is impossible. If you open the PDF with Acrobat and check its Fonts tab, neither embedded nor missing fonts should be listed -- the list should be entirely empty. If there are a few font names, your convert-to-outline procedure is not correct.
As for the problem Corel has with perfectly acceptable PDFs, I have no idea. Converting to outlines is, actually, frowned upon, as usually the PDF file format is robust enough not to need this, but it was a nice try if the fonts caused problems in other programs.

  • TOC with PDF import

    Hi
Anybody any experience with importing PDF into Robohelp? We
use specific format for Headings with a color we call 'RoboBlack?'.
Like this we are able to select the desired styles when importing.
    This works just well.
But why is no TOC created from the PDF? The PDF contains the
nested bookmark information! Is Robohelp not able to interprete it?
Thanks for any info on this
    Christian

The difference between Acrobat and InDesign is that InDesign is trying to both fully internalize the PDF as well as create a displayable rendition for the screen and that clearly has much more overhead that what is needed to simply display and/or print it.
Nonetheless, assuming that your PDF file is indeed a valid PDF file, InDesign should be able to place it without destablizing or crashing and within a reasonable amount of time.
I suspect that you will need to submit a bug report for this assuming that you are able to let Adobe see the problematic file(s).

  • Pdf Import; Offset Printing

Hi Everyone....I have my files in Pdf format and I want to do "OFFSET PRINTING"...I have Corel Draw Graphics Suite X5 and Adobe Illustrator CS5 for OFFSET PRINTING....but when I Import my files in these softwares... Dimensions of Pdf Files get disturbed and the image (Imported Pdf File) which opens in these softwares have text misplaced from their original position (Note: Dimensions, Font, Format & Style are important for my work)
So is there any other way to do "OFFSET PRINTING" or any other way to import Pdf files to these softwares without losing its dimensions....
    Please reply ASAP.....

Why don't you do the "OFFSET PRINTING" from your "PDF FILE"? This can "ACTUALLY BE DONE."

  • Pdf import: making bkg NOT transparent

I'm trying to place pdf pages in Keynote and parts of them are coming up transparent (most were created in Quark or Illustrator). Is there a way in Keynote to set the bkg color to white for the placed graphic? I know we can paste a white block or page behind the graphic either in Keynote or within the program which created it, but I'd rather not add an extra step or two.
Is there a way to have the contents of an image box both display the image AND have a non-transparent colored background?
    Thanks! - j
      Mac OS X (10.4.10)

If they were created in Quark and you exported directly from Quark to PDF, then any transparencies are still not flattened. If you have Acrobat 7.x or newer you can use PDF Optimizer (advanced menu/optimize PDF) and look for an option called "Flatten transparency", Select the values you require (ie: Low end for web, high end for print) and then optimize the file. Once it is done, do NOT save as, simply close and you will have no more transparent backgrounds. You can do the same in Illustrator before the files are imported into Quark or saved as PDF's. The other alternative is to make sure that Quark picture boxes have a fill of 'white' or '0% black', then writing PS instead of PDF and distilling it to create your PDF. Postscript does not support transparancies, so it flattens any it sees while creating the PS file, then the resulting PDF (after distilling) is flattened and you don't need to optimize it.
    Good luck.
The above assumes that you have image in the white areas, not simply blank space. Blank space is blank space, you would need to draw white boxes behind everything (What a pain!)

  • Can you set PDF import 'Crop to' box to 'Media Box' as default (PSD)?

When importing PDFs into Photoshop, can you set the default selection in the Crop To box as Media Box so that it is pre-selected every time you import a PDF?

You can link to a PDF from Flash and open in a new window, but you cannot load/import a PDF.
