Pdf - InDesign - with links

Hi,
I recently found a Multipage script that allows a pdf to be properly imported into InDesign.
The problem that I am having is that it does not save hyperlinks once it is imported.
I was wondering if anyone knew a way to accomplish this. I could just go back in InDesign and
put the hyperlinks back in, but it would be a much more time consuming process than if there is already
and existing way to save the hyperlinks upon importing. If anyone has any ideas here they would be greatly appreciated.
The overall goal here would be to have an ePub file that has links after exported from InDesign.
Thanks in advance for responses and ideas!

  • A PDF document with links to other PDFs corrupts the URL and get 404. Works in IE.

One of our supplier sites has manuals online that are PDF docs with links from one to another. For example, when I click on "Tanaka" I get a PDF menu of Tanaka service manuals, etc. When I click on a section, such as "Chainsaw" I get a 404. Part of the directory structure in the URL is missing. For example when in the Tanaka PDF menu I click on Chainsaw I go to http://www.parklands.net/Resources/Tana%20CSaw%20Menu.pdf which is wrong. It should be http://www.parklands.net/Resources/Tanaka/Tana%20CSaw%20Menu.pdf, and in IE it is.

The linked documents will not be automatically converted to PDFs and merged
with your file, neither in Acrobat Standard nor in Acrobat Pro. You can do
it, but you'll need to do it manually by converting all the files to PDFs,
merging them and then adding the links between them.

  • How to use PDF files with links to other PDF Files

How to use a PDF file with links to other PDF files that have been transferred to the same folder

Are you using a mouse, or a trackpad on a laptop? Either way, your cursor is usually an arrow, right? And presumably it's working/moving MOST of the time, otherwise you wouldn't be able to do anything?
For example, can you move the cursor arrow to the "Annotate" tool to click on it and go into Annotate mode? If so, can you click on the text tool? If so, does the cursor change to a crosshairs? At what point can you NOT move the cursor around the screen?

  • PDF annotation with link, image doesn't show, only in print or Google Chrome, not Adobe Reader main

We are creating PDF files with annotations, we are using the O2 Solutions PDF Library for C#. We used to create PDFStampAnnotations, but now we want to make the images clickable, to navigate to the URL belonging to the image.
Therefore, we are now using PDFLinkAnnotations, with a PDFImageAppearance.
We set the flags of the annotation to Print.
However, the annotation won't show in the PDF in Adobe Reader. It does show in the Google Chrome inline PDF viewer.
It also shows in the print preview window in Adobe Reader.
But it does not show in the normal view in Adobe Reader. What we do see is, when hovering over the rectangle that should contain our image, our mouse cursor becomes a hand and a tooltip with the link is displayed. If we click, everything works as expected. But we don't see an image!
What can we do about this? This is really annoying, as I don't have a clue why it won't work. Actually, to me, this looks like a bug in Adobe Reader?

    Thank  you for your reply.
Indeed, I tried saving a PDF that had the "default appearance", it shows exactly the same. So it looks like it "can't" show the image.
However, of course, I do want the image to be shown. How can I achieve this? How can I tell Adobe Reader (and other PDF viewers) I really really realllyyyyy want to see that image there? I believe I'm not doing anything really exotic, right? There must have been tons of other people that wanted to do the same thing, I guess?

I put together a weekly newsletter for our company and one of our customers provided me with an ad that has hyperlinks. The ad is in a PDF format. Anyway, when I convert the newsletter (with said ad) from inDesign to a PDF format, the hyperlinks that were on the ad initally do not appear in my finished PDF newsletter. I need some help in finding out how to get the PDF version of my inDesign-produced newsletter to display the ad WITH THE HYPERLINKS. Any and all help will be much appreciated.

  • When I sync PDF file "with links" to iPad i lose my images.

When I sync a Adobe File (which includes links) to Good Reader or any other PDF Reader from my MacBook Pro to iPad, I lose my images.  Tried to save down to Adobe 6 and 7 but still now success.  Someone posted earlier to go to Preview and save as JPEG since iPad has issues with JPEG2000, however then I lose my links. Does anyone have a solution?  My Adobe file is already 13MB and I would like to keep the size down as much as possible.

You likely need support from Adobe. The Apple User Guides are made with Adobe InDesign and they work fine with hyperlinks and illustrations in iBooks and GoodReader.

  • PDF export with link to document defaulting to "Open a web link" instead of "Open a file"

I have a MS Access database and I'm trying to export reports to PDF (I have Acrobat XI Pro) that include a hyperlink to another document on the same drive on my computer.  I have tested this with hyperlinked email addresses, and emails export fine to PDF and are still functional, opening a new email in Outlook.  The hyperlinks to documents work fine in MS Access, opening a Word, PDF, or other document when clicked.
When I export to PDF, the links to documents say, "This document is trying to connect to: file:" and my filepath.  If I say "Allow," the link tries to open in my default web browser, which comes up blank.  I've tested this on other computers in our office too.  When I right-click the link, I have the option to "Open weblink as a new document" -- this opens the document successfully, but won't be very helpful or fast for our staff.  When I examine the link with Tools - Add or Edit Link, I see that the link's action defaulted to "Open a web link" when the PDF was created.  This seems like it should be "Open a file."  To see if "Open a file" would work in theory, I tried creating a test button in a blank PDF and made the "mouse up" action "Open a file" and linked to various documents on my computer.  Each time, the button does not react to being clicked at all, like nothing happened.
I also tried making a basic Word doc with just the hyperlink to another document.  It works fine in Word, but, when saved as a PDF, the hyperlink does the same behavior-- tries to connect to the web instead of opening the file on the computer.
I have a lot of experience building Acrobat PDF forms and working in Acrobat, and I'm almost certain I've created links that open another file on the computer in Acrobat before, but I'm out of ideas and an internet search isn't turning up much.  I welcome any suggestions for things to try.  Thank you!

This is what I currently have, and it attempts to open in a web browser.  Do you know of a setting in Acrobat I might need to change, or any other solution to tell Acrobat to open the "file:" URL as a document, not try to start the web browser?

  • Exporting PDF's with links

I'll do whatever you say, if only you can please help me with this one.
My job is to send my clients PDF quotes for products I sell and I use FileMaker. With the print command, I create the PDF and mail it to my client. Easy!
Now I want to embed links to my web site for the various products listed in the quote. So I open the newly created PDF with Adobe Acrobat Professional, select the text "Product 1", ctrl click on it and "Create Link" to http://www.mysite.com/product_1.html, select the text "Product 2", ctrl click on it and "Create Link" to http://www.mysite.com/product_2.html, etc… Tedious!
Anyway, I just solved the first tedious part of this workflow, which is to open the PDF file in Acrobat automatically as soon as it is created. I created a folder where I save the PDF and attached a folder action which goes like this:
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving these_items
    repeat with each_item in these_items
tell application "Acrobat 6.0.2 Professional" to activate
tell application "Acrobat 6.0.2 Professional" to open each_item
    end repeat
    end adding folder items to
Now I would like to add to this script something to automate the link creation process:
    tell application "Acrobat 6.0.2 Professional"
if you find the exact text "Product 1"
    please select it
and make link with data "http://www.mysite.com/product_1.html"
if you find the exact text "Product 2"
    please select it
and make link with data "http://www.mysite.com/product_2.html"
keep on doing this 7 or 8 times
    save
    close file
    tell application "Mail"
to compose new message [with recently saved file neatly attached after 2 lines of carriage returns]
and please don't forget to put the cursor at the top of the document so that I can start working myself
Hey Wow! Thank You! That will be all for now.
    end tell
But Script Editor tells me it found a Syntax Error when it tries to compile this one. Any ideas why?

Can you post the exact script? Your general description doesn't really help to explain why it doesn't compile.

  • Question on PDF files with linked images (not embedded) between Reader and Illustrator

I run into situations when I get customer PDFs that need to be edited. When they load in Acrobat Reader it works fine. However if I load it into Illustrator it asks me to point it to the linked file. The question is how does Acrobat Reader open a PDF file and show a linked file when it is not embedded? Why can't Illustrator do the same thing?
This is more of a technical question, but any information would be helpful.  Thanks.

For linked images, your PDF file contains a thumbnail image along with the reference or address of the actual image. Reader will display this thumbnail. Now, wanting to edit the PDF in Illustrator, it wants to enable you working on the actual image. Hence it asks you to point to the linked file.

  • InDesign PDF printing with errors but only in browser

    Hello,
I've created a PDF poster and uploaded it to dropbox and put a link to it on my website. I want people to be able to open the PDF in the browser and print it immediately without having to download it. Unfortunately when the link to the PDF is clicked on and the poster printed, some of the objects within the PDF have moved - some items near the top seem to have shifted downwards while others have stayed where they are. However when I print the file direct from Adobe reader, this doesn't happen, it prints normally.
This is what the poster should look like, and what it looks like when printed from Adobe reader:
This is what the poster looks like when its printed from a browser:
As you can see something strange has happened to some of the objects near the top of the page, they appear to have been 'pushed down' in some way. We've tried saving the PDF as various different versions and with a variety of different settings, and although occasionally this might change the look of the printed document - the errant objects may move to different locations, this never solves the problem.
N.B. I've had the same problem when printing from some PDF readers other than Adobe reader.
Any help would be much appreciated, thank you for your time.

    Thank you for responding!
The browser doesn't open the reader, it just opens the PDF in a new window. This is the case in all browsers i've tried. But I should add that when the PDF first opens in this new window, it appears error free. It is only when print is clicked, and the print preview appears that the errors show up.
In response to your points about transparency (which I don't know about) and an interactive button, the PDF was created in InDesign just using what I assume where the default settings. So if I were to recreate the PDF in InDesign, with these complex functions disable would this solve the problem? If so could you tell me how to do that?
Thanks very much for your help,

  • InDesign CS5.5 won't import docx/Word2010 with linked images.

    Hi,
Maybe somebody knows what is going out
I have WORD 2010 document with LINKED MathType equations saved as EPS files.
In WORD 2010 they are LINKED or LINKED AND EMBEDED - but when I try to import this DOCX file into InDesign CS5.5 - images are missing.
Only EMBEDED images are imported/visible - but of course not linked.
I hope somebody can tell me if this is WORD or InDesign problem and how to fix this.
DOC file saved from WORD 2000 - imports perfectly fine - all EPS equations linked in WORD are perfectly visible and still linked in InDesign CS 5.5.
    thx

    Peter Spier wrote:
Hi Robert, we haven't seen you here for a while. Welcome back.
    Thx
I know Jongware complains bitterly that Word import can be really flakey. Did you try daving as plain .doc, too? Seems like MathType equations are also the subject of a fair number of posts, too, but I'm not sure they are really a similar problem. I don't suppose there's any way for you to convert the eqations to .ai or PDF and still use them as links in Word, or to embed rather than link?
I'm working on big tool to automatic mass processing big number of Word files. One of the steps is to prepare Word files with MathType equations for further manual processing. I have a macro (for Word2010) to automatically  export all equations to EPS files. The next step is to reImport EPS files back to Word - so they will be imported into InDesign as linked files and then they could be automatically correctly positioned withing the text.
The problem is - I've done reImport step in Word2000 - as 2nd macro - and it works perfectly fine for DOC files saved from Word2000.
Of course I can do this in InDesign - but I think it would be faster in Word.
I think missing import of the linked files for DOCX files is a BIG bug ...

  • Trouble With Links to Network Files Within Online PDF

I posted this at the end of someone else's thread who had a similar problem but it may have gotten lost in the shuffle. Either that or no one has an answer. Here goes...
I create a Word document that contains links to network files (tested and working) and convert the document to a PDF. The links still function in the PDF when I test them. However, when someone opens the document from our intranet, the file:/// is replaced with some form of a relative link, either to a users C: drive or to an http:// directory. If I then go into the PDF and change the link action from Open File to Open Web Link and provide the full file:/// path, everything works as intended. This really wouldnt be a big deal if I was the one maintaining the document or if it were an occasional thing. The problem is that updating or adding a link to the document means correcting the existing links all over again. This is very cumbersome for the user who maintains the document.
I'm using Acrobat 8 Professional. Any ideas?

I'm having a similiar issue with cross platform (Vista to Mac OS X 10.5) file linking. We currently store indesign files on a folder in a shared drive (the mac unix path to the drive is /Volumes/SharedDrive and the vista path is Z:\) and link assets in the document to another folder stored on the shared drive. Note that all linked assets are not stored in the same location on the shared drive, for instance a linked image could be deep in the folder structure (/Volumes/SharedDrive/Marketing/Images/Fall09/example.jpg).
The Vista computer references files differently than the mac on the shared drive, it seems to mount the network drive directly on the root level rather than in the /Volumes folder. I've tried to symlink the graphics folder (the one containing all the linked assets) to the root level of the hard drive (ln -s /Volumes/SharedDrive/Graphics /Graphics) but when we tried relinking the assets InDesign figured out it was a symlink and resolved the path to the absolute path. Is there some sort of configuration option in mac to mount this windows drive (it is on SBS Windows 2003) in a way that won't cause linking conflicts between mac and pc? Any thoughts are much appreciated!
Thank you for all your help!

@Steve – I'm not so sure about that.
At least the OP could experiment with Acrobat Pro's "Import as Layer" function.
With "Import as Layer" you could import another PDF to a new layer.
But I don't know if all the interactivity will stay in place and will be working.
    Did not test that yet.
See the screen where I did layer two different PDFs together. A German version and an English version of the same document:
"Import as Layer" is an option in the Layers at the sidebar of Acrobat Pro.
As you can see there are some options for positioning with "Manual positioning".

  • Indesign big size PDF because of links

    Hi guys,
I did a PDF  from InDesign. A 40 pg mostly text PDF which will result in the usual  from 200Kb to 500 Kb max. Now this is the first time i am adding hyperlinks to go to a specific page and the final size goes as much as 1.2 Mb which  is way too big for email. This is the Audit Space from Acrobat Pro 9, as you can see in  this image.
how can i reduce the Link Annotations? i didn't know there where that big. I tried PDF Optimizer from Acrobat Pro but it does very little effect, just reduce 100 Kb from 1,2Mb.
Should i make the Hyperlinks with Acrobat Pro and not with InDesign? doesn't seem very rational.
Thanks for any help or ideas,
    Sebs

Hi Peter, thanks for the fast reply. You were right about the links i have mistaken Bytes with Kilobytes then.
Nevertheless, 1.2 Mb for a 40 pages mostly text file is way too much. I have some Adobe Advertising PDF with small images very similar to mine and are a lot smaller in size. Maybe there is a better way to put together the structure and content.
I run PDF Optimizer with ALL settings on and the file reduces to 700 Kb which is OK. Nevertheless i haven't find out how to keep the hyperlinks on with all settings on. I specifically didn't touch bookmarks but the links are still off.
Do you have some setting for PDF Optimizer which is recommended? I wouldn't like to discard any important info an have problems later.
Steve: thanks for the good info too. I know that 1.2 Mb is considered small in nowadays broadband Internet. Anyhow the PDF is for 50/60 year old philosophers which Internet and File knowledge is very scare. I happy enough that the have emails...haha. I do have an account in Dropbox and i might try to teach them how to download the public link if i don't find another solution.
    Thanks,

  • Mac InDesign CS6 crashes when adding files with links to Windows network into book

Our Mac network is unstable, so I tested linking InDesign CS6 files (on my Mac's hard drive) to .jpg files on our company's very stable Windows network rather to the same .jpg files on our Mac network. I tested with 4 simple, small InDesign files. When these 4 files were linked to images on a storage drive on our Mac network, I could drag all 4 files into a book and export the book to PDF. But when linked to the same images on the Windows network, while each file would open fine with no errors, and while I could generate a PDF from each individual file, the moment I dragged the 4 files into a book, InDesign crashed, generating pages of information in the crash report form.
I have no problem making 500 page manuals on my hard drive, comprised of about 50 InDesign files, with links to THOUSANDS of image files on a storage drive on our Mac network. Is there some trick to making a book with files linked to images on a Windows network? If there is no simple answer, who could I call to set us up so this will work?
I'm using InDesign CS6 for Mac, totally updated, version 8.0.1.
    Thank you so much!!!

It seems, this is all you need to do... your message isn't clear as to whether you've fixed your issue or not.
    [Extract from link above]...
"Add the network share(s) to your Favorites in Bridge and drag assets into your layouts from Bridge or Mini-Bridge. The paths stored in the InDesign links will be full network paths, and both sets of machines should have no problem finding them. This is the more usual InDesign workflow."
