Pdf never loads in safari, gray screen

After updating my Safari, pdf's show up as a gray screen.

For Safari, try removing the adobe pdf plugins.
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewer.plugin
/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/AdobePDFViewerNPAPI.plugin
These were installed when you installed Adobe Reader.  Apparently there's a problem with these with the current flock of browsers.
If you are not using Safari the above will work for other browsers too, although in FireFox, you could just disable the use of those plugins from within Firefox (Tools menu --> AddOns --> Plugins).

  • .pdf files appear as a gray screen

.pdf files appear as a gray screen when downloading from a website link since upgrading to Snow Leopard. They (pdf files) are fine when received and opened from an email sent to us.  Any ideas on how to fix it?

First I Reset Safari, then close Safari then navigate to:
Home/Library/Preferences and look for and then remove
    com.apple.Safari.plist
    com.apple.Safari.RSS.plist
    Also:
Home/Library/Safari/ folder and remove the following two files:
    history.plist
    lastsession.plist
    And
Go to Home/Library/Caches/Metadata/Safari/ and remove the contents of that folder.
(These are just  webhistory files and are not required for Safari to run. However, similar to preference files, problems can arise if they have become corrupt.)
Locate the cookies.plist file that's located in the Home/Library/Cookies/ folder and remove it.
They will all be recreated next time you launch Safari.

  • My computer won't load past the Gray screen with the apple, what do I do?

Does anyone know how to get my computer to turn on? I used it on Friday and had a normal shut down but when I went to turn it on yesterday, it gets the the gray screen with the apple and the loading bar and loads half way and then just stops and sits there until it eventually shuts itself off. I have tried turning it off and then back on and holding the D key but nothing happened.

Resetting SMC as well as NVRAM(PRAM) could solve the problem.

  • PDFs not loading in Safari (OSX 10.8.2)

Everytime I try to view a PDF through Safari, all I get is a dark grey screen. I can open PDFs through other browsers, and I can download them from Safari.

    Back up all data.
Quit Safari. In the Finder, select Go ▹ Go to Folder from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Copy the line of text below into the box that opens, and press return:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
From the folder that opens, remove any items that have the letters “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then launch Safari and test.
If you still have the issue, repeat with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari again.

  • Computer doesn't load past gray screen...but it's more complicated....

Hi to those reading my question.....
I'm not sure what to do. I have a MacBook Pro, OS X (10.5.8). About 4 weeks ago (3 weeks after my apple care protection plan expired), my super drive stopped accepting discs. It made a low eh-eh sound and then spit out whatever I (lightly) pushed in. About a week after that, my computer wouldn't start past the gray start-up screen (gear turning). I went through the (apple-)suggested steps on how to restart the computer. Didn't work. Since I had just backed-up, I decided to just erase and install.
Computer seemed to be working fine. I deleted about 35 gigs from the hard drive, so that there was 39 gigs free. (I thought the problem was because my hard drive was almost full.)
I also noticed that the super drive started to work again.
2 weeks later, the computer again won't load past the gray screen. And the super drive again doesn't accept disks. I did a repair disk in Disk Utility: "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." I did a repair permissions disk: "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit. Permissions repair complete."
And now I'm not sure what to do because I don't know what the problem is. Is there any way to find out on my own? And fix it?
Thanks in advance to anyone willing to help out!

Drive cleaner can do wonders for your drive. Your drive may need cleaning. Cleaning kits can be purchased from any store that sells CD/DVDs.

Go to your OS Help Menu. In the search field type dvd
Click on all the troubleshooting topics & Support Articles that pertain to your issue.
You can also do the same in Disk Utility. Open same up.
At the bottom left of the window, click on the purple button w/the "?" in the middle.

  • Gray screen after screen freeze and finder+all programs restart.

Sometimes, (like 4 or 5 times a day) my screen freezer, i get a loading circle, a gray screen and then Finder and all my programs restart.
It's doing that since i updated to Osx lion.
    Computers
         - 21.5" iMac 2010
         - 15" MacBook Pro 2006
Does anyone know what this is? And how do I solve this problem?
Because its shuts down everything im busy with (and doesn't save it).

I found this to work at least to get in and backup some files. It is VERY important to put these commands in EXACTLY as seen here, including spaces.
Boot into Single-User mode (Command-S while booting up)
    Execute the following commands:
    /sbin/fsck -fy /
    /sbin/mount -uw /
    mkdir /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
    cd /Disabled_System_Library_Extensions
    mv /System/Library/Extensions/ATI* .
    mv /System/Library/Extensions/AMD* .
    touch /System/Library/Extensions
    exit
I guess these two graphics extensions go bad quite often on Macbook Pro 15-inch.  They are part of the logic board. The only problem I had was I still couldn't get into my computer any other way, and the graphics for Safari were messed up.  Firefox was okay.  Good Luck!

  • Macbook Pro 2.16 15" won't go past gray screen

My MBP 2.16 15" that was running on Snow Leopard stop loading past the gray screen.
I was able to recover the data via connected to my imac. So I can see the orginal hard drive just fine. So my first guess was a bad hard drive so I bought a SSD and put it in. The Snow Leopard DVD install disk shows up when you hold the "option" button at startup, but when you choose the Install DVD disk, it doesn't get past the gray screen. I even tried with the DVD install disk the MBP came with 10.4.8 I think, but the same results.
It will boot in safe mode, with the cursor looking like it has small bars underneath it.
    I've tried numerous things including
    - PRAM/ SMC reset
    - taking RAM out and using just the factory RAM
The Mac "Genius" said the hardware test ran fine on everything, but it wouldn't boot up with the network startup, a USB startup or Firewire startup.
I went back to the orginal hard drive last night and went into safe mode. Tried to install Snow Leopard and it starting installing..it took 55 minutes and my hopes were high at midnight. But when it rebooted itself...it just went to the gray screen again.
I'm out of ideas and I'm pretty sure something is up with the logic board. What do you guys think?
I've also heard that the video card on the late 2006 models of MBP give users fits.
    all help is appreciated.

Ok.  I think I got it.
    I reset the NVRAM.

  • Open in pdfs in preview from Safari page

Since the release of Safari 8.03 when a pdf page loads in Safari the icons to have the page opened in preview no longer works.
When a PDF is open on a Safari page, bringing the cursor to the bottom of the page causes several icons to pop up, one of which used to cause the pdf to be opened by preview. Now when I click that icon nothing happens. I can export the pdf and then open in preview, but that is an extra few steps.
Any suggestions on how to bring the behavior back?

Have you installed the vlc plug in for safari, this might help, I'm going to try it my self and see if it works

  • Can't get past gray screen with file icon on it

When i turn on my computer the power light goes out but the gray screen stays on. After two or three minutes an icon of a file with a question mark appears. I cannot get past this screen. I have removed my battery and tried again. I have also tried the other processes for a computer that won't turn on. In my case the computer does turn on just never gets past this gray screen. Please someone help me

The question mark on the file tells you that your MacBook wants to start up but can't find a viable OS to start from. Can you start up from the DVD that came with your Mac? If so, go to Disk Utility and see if you can repair the internal hard drive. If you can't see the hard drive from within DU, your drive may have failed, and you may need to replace it. Good luck.

  • Mac Pro (early 2008) wont boot pat the gray screen

First, my mac pro has three hard drives, bay 1 is time machine, bay 2 is empty, and bay 3 is A new Disk, running a newly installed 10.6.4. The computer was running great, then one morning I turned it on and the computer never got passed the gray screen after the chime and fan noise. I did a hard restart, holding down the power button, the computer booted normally to bay 3. This has happen twice. I have notice that if I restart from the OS it boots to bay 3 with no problems. It seem to only happen when the computer has been off for several hours.
Thanks for any help on this!

One thing at a time, and while I would hope you would use DW 4.2 on regular basis, plan for the worst and hope for the best, no reason to jump off the deep end and no, not processors or logicboard.
DW may not be able to boot your system from its CD, which I never use, just copy latest 4.2+ version to your boot volumes.
A printer or its cable, scanner, consumer USB device is much more likely, or drivers.
But, need to have a clean install of OS X (20GB volume) and a full boot image to play with first.
You can also use OS X DVD.
Safe boot mode - for when there isn't any other option and to do light maintenance.

  • Safari: Pages begin to load and then go to blank gray screen?

Hi there. I am using Safari 6.1.1 on a late 2009 iMac. I've never had this problem before, and it's worth noting that Safari does not actually crash -- it remains responsive but the pages don't load properly. They begin to load and but it's as if, the instant the full page appears, it cuts to a blank gray screen. It doesn't happen with absolutely every site but it occurs with the majority I'm visiting. Obviously it makes Safari unusable so I'd appreciate any help that could be offered. Thanks.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your personal files or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you boot, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, reboot as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of steps 1 and 2.
