PDF not showing at actual size

I have a website mockup design (72dpi) created in Fireworks. I often provid these for client review as PDFs. However, recently, the PDFs are not displaying properly.
I've tried various ways of creating the PDFs: place Fireworks png in InDesign, open PNG in Photoshop, print to PDF from FW...
When I open these PDFs at 100% they are oversized. Why aren't they displaying at proper size? It is a problem for a lot of biz Acrobat users as they don't know the proper size to display the mockup to see them properly.
Seems like such a simple thing, but I cannot determine the resolution. I simply want the PDF to display at actual size for screen viewing, 100%. Normally, it's easier to create PDF then to publish mockup designs to the web wrapped in web pages.
Any enlightenment is appreciated.

Interesting...I don't recall seeing that pref in the past. I'm using v8.1.6 and it is there. "System setting" is 99 px/inch. And here all these years I thought my Macs were 72 px/inch but Acrobat believes it to be 99. Which also explains why at 75% they looked closer to actual size.
I changed that setting to 72 and it display perfectly. But, as you said, that setting on someone else's system is beyond my control.
Seems pretty screwy that Acrobat itself drives how a user sees a document rather then the document delivering it's actual dims/resolution. I'm simply surprised that I've not known this all this time.
It depends upon the resolution of the monitor used and the Graphics Card used in your system.
Usually it would be 72. but for example above in the Screen shot I showed my PowerBook 17" does infact use 98DPI.
I don't know whether you noticed the drop down box for Zoom level All I have shown is fit to Page but there is also fit to width  along with percentages going all the way up to 200%.
If you want you can set back to 99 and change the zoom level you normally see when openning a file.

  • Preview not showing in actual size

When you open a group of images, select them all and make Preview open them in Actual size (Why oh why is there not a setting for this - to open all images in actual size!?), why is it that when scrolling between them using gestures just makes Preview show the image resized yet again?

  • How to create a PDF that prints at actual size for all printers

I create printable educational products for teachers and homeschoolers.  I need to be able to make some printable PDFs that have cards set to a specific dimension, say 3" x 3".  When I create PDFs in InDesign and print them, the printer tends to shrink the PDF down.  This happens even when I set the Page Scaling to None.  But regardless of what my printer does, I would like to be able to create PDFs that print at actual size for anyone who purchases my products.  How can this be done?  Can I change the settings when I create the PDF?  Do I need to includes special instructions with my products?  Thanks so much for your help.

You can specify the printing process in the PDF for Acrobat and Reader, open the PDF in Acrobat > file properties (right mouse click on the page) and in the extended tab (the most right tab) you can set printing not to scale for that PDF as default setting.

  • PDF downloads show unknown file size so cannot open

This problem has just started over the past week. When I need download a pdf file (such as tickets etc) it shows as 'Unknown size' so I cannot open it. The dowload list shows only downloads done months ago - although, up to last week, I had no problem. Cory MH replied earlier this week suggesting the following but I am not sure how to access the information. This is screen shot of the advice:
Can you check the properties of your places.sqlite file, which handles your bookmarks, browsing history, and downloads? It is contained in your Firefox profile folder, which you can access by going to the about:support page or:
    • Help (or > ) > Troubleshooting Information
On that page, click the "Show Folder" button and that will open your profile folder in Windows Explorer. Look for the places.sqlite file and right click it. Select Properties and under the General tab, make sure that it isn't "Read-only".
You can also install the Places Maintenance extension to run maintenance on the file to see if that can fix it if it is corrupted. Please read the following articles first as they provide helpful hints and instructions that may be relevant to you:
I really need clarification as to where to find the 'about:support page' on Help/Troubleshooting etc.
This problem is a real nuisance as I will need to dowload boarding passes later in the week.
    Thanks for any help

  • "actual size" does not display as actual size

If I open a document with "preview", and choose "dispay>actual size", the document will be displayed exactly at the actual size. For instance, an A4 document will be displayed exactly as large as an A4 size piece of paper. I checked by actually laying an A4 on the screen: they aligned perfectly. It appears that this program is aware of the pixel size or amount of Pixels Per Inch of my screen.
However, any other program I use to create documents, doesn't display "actual size" or "100%" properly.
Both iWork and Microsoft Office programs display documents way smaller than the actual size when set to 100%. Its is more like 50% to 60% of the actual size. Adobe acrobat displays at about 75% of the actual size. It seems that these programs base the display size on a preset pixel size or amount of Pixels Per Inch, that does not necessarily correspond with the pixel size of the screen. Since I have relatively small pixels, the documents are displayed very small.
*Is there any way that I can configure my OS or these programs in such a way that they will display "actual size" properly?*
I figure that if "preview" can do it, other Apple programs, like iWork, should be able to do the same.
    Thanks for your help!

The terms "actual size" and "100%" are misnomers. To give an example, if you open an image in Preview and choose "actual size", it will display your image at 1 pixel on the screen per 1 pixel of image. The size of the image you see on your screen will be different depending on the resolution and size of your screen. It does not vary with the resolution of your printer or the dimensions of the paper you have chosen or any other printer settings. The size you see on the screen has nothing to do with the size of your printout. "Actual size" is not really "actual size", as you have discovered.
Turn on the rulers that are built into Pages. They are not "actual size" either but they'll show what the size will be for the paper size you have chosen.

  • Can you lock a pdf to print in Actual Size?

I'm having an issues when others go to print out a document and don't make sure the document is set to print in actual size and we lose the scaling on the document. Is there a way to lock the print settings on a pdf so they are always correct?

You can set a Print Preset in Acrobat Pro in File > Document > Advanced which controls the way the Print dialog initially displays. Of course, someone could also change it. You cannot lock the print settings.

  • Folder problems on external drive, not showing correct file size

I've run across a strange problem. I'm media managing for a tv show, meaning I'm offloading video from CF cards onto 2 external drives, one is a Drobo Raid (set up for backup) and another is a Lacie rugged drive. After copying the media to both drives, the folder I copy will match, but sometimes as I drill upward in my folder structure, suddenly the file sizes will not match. To be more clear: 2 folders will show differing file sizes, but inside that folder is only another folder, nothing else, which matches across the drives. I've shown all files in finder and there's no hidden files, though sometimes I see the ds_store files are different sizes (8k vs 16k), but that's not always the case. Sometimes if I simply create a new folder and move it's contents into it I can get the folders to match, but sometimes that doesn't work. It's part of my workflow to show that these copies match exactly via screenshots, and although the most important folder (the direct folder holding the footage) always matches, these folder problems are super frustrating as it's not constant, and any workarounds also work inconsistantly.
I had an accidental disconnect of the Drobo one time, and although none of the data seems to have any problem, I fear it's done something to the directory. The rugged drive is swapped out every few days and the problem seems to be on the Drobo. Because the nature of the data is pretty important, I'm afraid to just try messing around with repairing or other software solutions unless I know it's super safe and won't harm the data.
I'm at a loss as to what's causing it and at the very least how to avoid it cropping up. Any help or insight would be appreciated!

I had the same problem with my iMac, first I repaired the disk, then I ejected the disk, restarted, and then reinserted the USB in a different port.  All of my files magically showed up.  I don't know what caused the error but it has been working fine since.

  • Adobe PDF not showing in PPD

    Hi,
Does anyone know why "Adobe PDF" is no showing in the PPD section when defining a new Print Preset? At the moment i'm manually draging the PDF through Distiller, generally i can do this auatomatically through indesign, but it's all different on my new Mac.
    Any suggestions greatly appreciated
    Cheers

The Article is great thanks! Explains allot, and i know now that it's a widespread issue. it doesn't quite resolve my problem (although it gets the PDF PPD showing up in inDesign which is great). InDesign still won't export to distiller and produce the PDF though.
No that's cool, We have to run all Ads and documents through Distiller for the Press, export doesn't cut it it's not a huge problem as it can be done manually, but it saves so much time when it's done via InDesign.

  • Will not print to actual size

    Hello,
I am brand new to any Photoshop program, and am trying to design in Elements 10, that came with a printer I recently purchased.
I created a new file and set it with a white background, 300 pixel/inch (default?), and at 10.625 inches wide and 7.375 inches in height.
When working, I enable the rulers, and can see that indeed, the file is at the above dimensions. However, when I go to print and select to print at the actual size, it always comes out of the printer at 10.25 inches wide. The height is always fine, exactly as I have specified. But the width is always too short by the same amount. I have attempted to print at a custom size instead of actual size, and then set the custom dimensions to my desired W and H. Same result. The height is fine, the width is 10.25 inches.
As I noted, I am new to all of this! I am sure there must be any easy fix . . . something I just don't understand. Please help!
As a few extra details, just in case it matters, I am using a MacBook Pro OS X 10.6.8 and the printer is an Epson 1430 Artisan. The printer drivers should be completely updated, as I just went through all that on the phone with them last weekend when the Epson had trouble communicating with the MacBook Pro.
Thank you in advance for any help!
    -Fisheye
EDIT: I even increased the size of the project under image > resize to a full 11 inches. It still will only print to 10.25 inches.

    Thank you, hatstead.
Indeed it was a printer issue, not an Elements 10 issue. The printer will print borderless at 8.5x11, but I was unfamiliar with the settings. Thanks!

  • PDF not showing certain updates in Illustrator CC ?

I've had a strange problem that happens every so often and is very annoying and time consuming. I'll be working in Illustrator CC and I save my work as pdf (with editing abilities preserved). Then when I open the file later, the last changes that I made to the file don't show in Illustrator, they are just gone, layers, changes - sometimes it is a lot of work lost.
The strangest part is that at the same time Bridge previews the updated file correctly, showing all the updates I made. And if I open the pdf in Acrobat, the changes are there as well. But in Illustrator they are not. So in the same moment I can look at the file in 3 programs but only two show it correctly.
I have no idea how this happens but it is very frustrating.
    Using a Mac and CC.

When you use the "preserve editing abilities" option, you are actually telling Illustrator to embed a complete copy of the .AI file inside the PDF. It's why the file size explodes.
Illustrator will read that embededded file when you re-open the PDF, and will ignore the actual PDF data.
Everything else will read the PDF data and ignore the embedded .AI file.
So if you make any changes to the PDF outside of Illustrator, you cannot import them back in.

  • Embeded 3D PDF not showing up in webpage on IE8 with Windows XP

    Hi,
There seems to be a compatibility problem with embedded 3D PDF and IE8 on Windows XP. The PC that is experiencing the problem runs on Windows XP Professional Edition with Service Pack 3; it also has Adobe Reader X Version 10.1.3 installed.
This compatibility problem can be demonstrated with the following screenshots.
The first screenshot shows a blank space with a small red "X" at the lower left corner which was taken when IE8 was being used. This blank space is where the embedded 3D PDF is suppose to show up.
The second screenshot shows how the webpage is suppose to look. It was taken when Firefox 14.0.1 was used to browse the same webpage.
Here is the URL for this testing page:
    http://search.newport.com/?q=*&x2=sku&q2=SM-25
What can I do to have my XP computer show this website correctly on IE8? Or is this a problem for the webmaster of this website?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Peter H.

I too am having this same problem.  When I contac
t Adobe the person was of no help and
I can not print any PDF files. This is so frustrating.
I can not delete it not open it. What gives???

  • Mail attachment (pdf) not showing properly as preview

Just recently I've received a pdf attachment that showed some (hidden) layers visible in preview. Opening it in Acrobat reader shows no problem.
Other computers and systems in the company also handle the file properly. No one else sees it the way I see it on my computer.

Sorry you're having this problem. I think it was previously reported only by Windows XP users.
When you reinstall, were you making Firefox your default browser? Some users have reported that ''not'' making Firefox the default browser was an effective workaround.
However, you may have success with this approach, suggested by a user in another thread, which appears to more thoroughly update the Windows registry:
    # Open Adobe Reader / Acrobat
    # Edit->Preferences
    # In the Categories column click 'General'
    # Near the bottom of the page click the button marked 'Select Default PDF Handler'
    # In the dialog, select 'Adobe Reader XI' (or Adobe Acrobat, as the case may be) and click 'Apply'
    # A Windows Configuration screen will appear. Allow it to do its stuff (takes a few minutes), then restart your computer when prompted.
Does that resolve the issue for you?
