.pdf on desktop won't open or go into trash

An icon appeared on my wife's Macbook Air desktop and she has no idea where it came from, what it is or how to get rid of it.  It has a red and white "pdf" icon with the title Acr790289319801612880.tmp  Nothing happens when it's double clicked, or if she tries to open it under "File" then "Open." I changed the extension to .pdf and tried to open it, but no dice.
If she drags it into the trash it makes the sound effect of dropping into the can but remains on the desktop and doesn't show up in the trash.
Anyone know what this is or how to get rid of it?  Should we smash the computer to bits, then burn it and flee the house?  Change our identities and live "off the grid?"  Join the Peace Corps or Foreign Legion under assumed names?

HI Bill
I had a similar issue, ended up having to do the following - I dont know if it will help you and I am a MAC novice - only 1 week into the experience.
I dragged the offending item into my Documents folder. I had to do this twice as it did not 'take' the first time.
I then opened up Finder/Documents and could see the offending item.
Now, I had already customised my View of the toolbar in Finder to include the Trash Can. I was able to drop the item from the Finder window into the Trash Can on the Finder toolbar.
Went to the Trash Can and hit empty. Done.

  • PDF Files on desktop won;t open all the way. 11.07 won't download with Maverick 11.06

I have Maverick 11.0.6.  It quit downloading 11.07 half way through.  Also, some PDF files on my desktop won;t open all the way.  Still show the logo. What is going on?

The Installer that you had downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5786 is the 11.0.07 patch update for Reader XI. It shows the dialog "choose the copy of Adobe Reader to update" under following scenarios:
    1. When it finds more than one copy of Adobe Reader installed on a system. In this case, You need to choose the application that you use, like browse to Applications directory and choose Adobe Reader if that is the location from where you use the application.
    2. When the installer didn't find any copy of Adobe Reader installed on a system which it needs to update. In this case, you may install Adobe Reader XI version 11.0.07 directly from here get.adobe.com/reader/ from the same machine you intend to use it on.
Please let us know if any of the above suggestion resolved your problem.

  • PDFs on website won't open on mobile devices

We've a website currently in development mode which has PDFs for download. These open fine from a desktop, but on mobile devices we get "Error opening document, please try again".
The same PDF has been copied to another website and it does download to mobile devices successfully.
The links had "target = _blank" which I've since removed to see if the problem was caused by opening a new window. This made no difference. We have the same issue when opening the PDF by entering the full URL in the browser.
The only thing I have in [ISAPI_Rewrite] is "AddType application/pdf .pdf " to try and force it to download.
    Kind regards

  • Files on desktop won't open

    I'm helping a friend with an iMac G5. (10.4...)
Sometimes, after a couple days, the icons on the desktop suddenly won't open anymore (files, folders, external harddrives). Right-clicking (contextual menus) stops working on these icons, as well.
Disk Utility Permissions Repair doesn't fix the problem.
Only Restarting fixes it -- for a while (sometimes weeks, depending on use)
Is this just a Preference problem? Or is this a sign of something (gulp) worse?

    Hello Jan:
I doubt if preferences have anything to do with the problem.
Try running repair disk from the software install DVD (fixes directory problems).
I would also run the hardware checker that came with the system.

  • Installed IE 8 on my vista home laptop and now my palm desktop won't open .

The desktop that came with my palm Centro worked fine for a year. I installed IE8, now when I try to open the Palm desktop it won't open. I can still hotsync via USB. Windwoes says there is a problem and it can't open but will look to see if there is a solution. Windwoes doesn't find one. I tried to go back to a previous restore point, still nothing. I don't have bluetooth on my computer so new 6.2 desktop is not an option. Help Please

Hello geocostello and thanks for posting on the forums....
You can re-install the 4.2 desktop that came with your centro via the CD.  (if you still have it...)  If not, you can go to the palm.com and do a search for Desktop Manager 4.2 and download it, then install it.  This should not affect your data.  Before doing this, try going into the Add/Remove Programs and un-installing the desktop manager from there.  Then re-install the software.  Again, This should not affect your data.
If the software does not un-install from Add/remove Programs, you can go to microsoft and download the Microsoft Un-install Utility.  This should remove the software and registry entries and allow you to re-install the Desktop manager 4.2
    Let us know what happens....
    Thanks,

  • Pdf from safari won't open

When I save as a pdf from Safari, I get a file that "Acrobat could not open because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

Back up all data before making any changes. Please take each of the following steps until the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
If Adobe Reader or Acrobat is installed, and the problem is just that you can't print PDF's displayed in Safari, you may be able to print by moving the cursor to the the bottom edge of the page, somewhere near the middle. A black toolbar may appear under the cursor. Click the printer icon.
    Step 2
There should be a setting in its preferences of the Adobe application such as Display PDF in Browser. I don't use those applications myself, so I can't be more precise. Deselect that setting, if it's selected.
    Step 3
If you get a message such as ""Adobe Reader blocked for this website," then from the Safari menu bar, select
    Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Security
    and check the box marked
    Allow Plug-ins
    Then click
    Manage Website Settings...
and make any required changes to the security settings for the Adobe PDF plugin.
    Step 4
Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it, the copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C:
    /Library/Internet Plug-ins
    In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-G. Paste into the text box that opens (command-V), then press return.
From the folder that opens, move to the Trash any items that have "Adobe" or “PDF” in the name. You may be prompted for your login password. Then quit and relaunch Safari.
    Step 5
The "Silverlight" web plugin distributed by Microsoft can interfere with PDF display in Safari, so you may need to remove it, if it's present. The same goes for a plugin called "iGetter," and perhaps others — I don't have a complete list. Don't remove Silverlight if you use the "Netflix" video-streaming service.
    Step 6
Do as in Step 4 with this line:
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-ins
If you don’t like the results of this procedure, restore the items from the backup you made before you started. Relaunch Safari.

  • Pdf email attachments won't open

After upgrading to IOS 7 the pdf email attachments are not opening...just says "loading" and never loads.

    Hi DVFFTI,
I'm not sure from your description if you're having the same problem I was having.
In my case, PDF attachments would only display as a single image of the first page of the PDF.
The only option I had was to Copy or Save the image. I couldn't open a preview of the full PDF in Mail or tap to 'Open in...' a different app.
Turns out that I had too many apps on my iPhone that can read PDFs, for example, Dropbox, Evernote, iBooks, Kindle, etc. even a Canon app for remote printing.
Removing one of them fixed the issue for me.
I remember this happening before and seeing other threads about this, so I don't think it's specific to iOS 7.
Give it a go and see if it fixes your problem. Hope it helps.

  • Palm not syncing + Palm Desktop won't open (error message says FILE IS BUSY)

    Drama players = Tungsten e2+Mac OS X 10.5.4
                                   Tungsten e2+Mac OS X 10.4.1
    Hi,
I've been trying to hotsync my palm to Mac laptop for a few hours everyday for  5 days now - I've visited all the forums, bought a new laptop (this was incidental rather than caused by the palm problem)
...At first I got the "transport monitor" missing error - I followed support forums' suggestions.  It didn't work.  Hotsync would not happen; and neither would palm desktop open.  i don't use any other programs to sync (not isync, not outlook, etc) Only ever use Palm for like 10 years now.
This problem persisted in both my 3-yr old mac and the brand new mac-
I also tried installing pam desktop  from the online palm support site.
I've since re-installed palm desktop a few times and handheld says "hotsync operation complete" However, Palm Desktop will not open and I get this error -- "file is busy"
Please please help - I've recently decided to allow my palm to rule my life again (we do international events and we're bringing in Australia's #1dj in a few weeks) --I'm desperate for a solution -
    Thank you!!

  • PDF page links won't open

Recently I've been unable to open a page within Safari which is a PDF link. The page is just blank. It's the same in Firefox. I'm not talking about downloading PDFs and opening in Preview. Any help much appreciated. Tim

    Hi Tim
this is sometimes due a plugin from Adobe not working properly - do you have a file like 'Adobe pdf plugin' in either of these folders?
    HD/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
    or
    Home/Library/Internet Plug-Ins/
If so, quit any web browsers & move it to the desktop, then see if pdf's start working in Safari.
Failing that, test briefly in a a New User Account to see if the problem is system-wide or restricted to that one user.

  • PDF from Bank won't open in Reader X

Only since yesterday am I unable to open a PDF bank statement (while on the bank's website). I am using Firefox but have also tried Internet Explorer and am getting a black screen in both. After several repair attempts followed by reinstallation attempts, all resulting in error messages, I am at my wit's end.
Several months ago I signed up for a trial of the full Adobe Acrobat program but did not proceed with purchase as I do not have much need for this program. While I deleted the trial version I have had nuisance issues with Adobe Reader X ever since, however nothing like described above.

I have tried that and almost any other option I read about. The worst was trying to delete and reinstall the program (just would not work) and to realize that there seems to be an incompatibility  between AR X, FireFox, Internet Explorer and Windows Vista. In desperation I opened Google Chrome, downloaded the program without any snags and was finally able to open and print the documents I needed. A whole day wasted: wished I had thought of Google Chrome sooner!

  • PDF in emails won't open webos 1.3.1

  • PDF in browser won't open another PDF

I've built a Flash Projector file that opens a PDF on a CD (in the same folder as the Projector file) using getURL, so the PDF opens in a browser Window. That part works fine, however within the PDF that opens are links to other PDFs on the CD. When you click on the links you get a message asking do you want to Block, Allow or Cancel access to the second PDF. When I click Allow, nothing happens. There is no error message and certainly teh PDF does not open.
How do I get the secondary PDFs to open? If I open the initial PDF directly from the CD all the links work fine and open the PDFs without question, it is only when it is opened in a browser that I get asked the security question which does nothing in response.

Well, as I explained, I'm launching a Flash Projector file with a button that opens the PDF. I'd always understood that the only way to launch a PDF from Projector on a CD was to use getURL, which launches a browser. If there's some other way I'd love to know.
I too get the security question of Block, Allow or Cancel but nothing happens when I click allow. No error message and certainly no PDF popping up. The links are correct because when I open the PDF directly it works, it's only when the PDF is open in a browser that it doesn't. I can open other PDFs in a browser with fully pathed URLs to PDFs on web sites and they work, it's only linking to a relatively pathed file on the CD that doesn't.
