PDF open in Preview

I am new at this and need help. I am creating a website and I
have linked several PDF files to the site. I need visitors to be
able to zoom in and out of the files. But the files are openning in
a new browser window - not in acrobat or preview. How do I get the
pdf files to open in preview?

It depends on how 'they' have their system configured. Theres
not much you
can do about it sorry.

  • Note function on pdfs opened in preview

When I add notes to pdfs opened in preview, they are placed in the middle of the page and text. Is there a way to move these around so that they don't cover the text?

Ah, you are right. I left the highlight function on, so preview wasn't allowing me to drag the notes.

  • Why don't pdf open in Preview, it asks where Adobe Acrobat is located? I never used Acrobat and do not want to use it.

I am using Safari 5.0.5 and open a page that is a PDF and only a black screen comes up and asks where I have Adobe Acrobat. I do not have Acrobat and want to use preview. I looked in the Safari preferences and there is no place to set it so PDFs only use Preview. Please help!

Right or control click a PDF file you already have on the hard drive then click Get Info.
In the Get Info panel from the pop up menu next to: Open with
    Select: Preview

Well you can drag your PDF to the table of Contents>Books  in the left margin
however, PDF will still open in Preview.
Books will open in the iBooks interface.

  • PDF opens in preview instead of ibooks

All my imported  PDF's open up  in preview instead of ibooks ?!
    Any hint ?

If you want your PDF files to open with iBooks, then you can follow these procedures. (some PDFs will not work with these):
Open Finder and search for the PDF file you want to open with iBooks.
Right-click the file you've selected and point the mouse cursor to Open With...
In the Open With... menu, select which application you want to open with the file, then select iBooks.
(You can also open it with the Other menu if iBooks is not listed in recommended applications to open the file. To open, select the Other menu, under the applications list, then you will see the Enable selection box. Change Recommended Applications to All Applications. Now, select iBooks in the applications list.)
    Warning:
Do not check the Always Open With checkbox. This will make all your PDF files open with iBooks, as this makes iBooks the default PDF reader instead of Preview. Some PDFs will not work with iBooks.
Use the procedure above with caution.

  • Check box showing double when PDF opened in Preview

I'm setting up a simple check box functionality on a PDF my company sends out. I noticed the check boxes look strange when the PDF is opened up in Preview on Mac. Not sure about PC as we don't have one here. It appears to look fine in Acrobat but I believe a good portion of our clients will use Preview. What you see in the image below is the result when I make a check box and change the color to blue green. The black check mark over it comes out of nowhere. My temporary work-around is to make the check mark art invisible so just that crappy black line shows up instead, although I hate the way it looks.
Any help is much appreciated, thanks!

You should always include a link to the FREE Adobe Reader with advice that best results will be seen using it when you distribute a PDF.
Of course you cannot control what others will use, but if you expect them to use Preview you need to dumb down the design accordingly.

  • Pantones turn black when PDF opened in Preview

I am creating mockups for a t-shirt design, this top photo is how the design looks in illustrator with the correct pantones: blue 3115C, Red 119C, and Black.
When I save it as a PDF and it is opened in the Preview Application, certain colors turn black like this:
This has happened several times lately and I have recently switched from Illy CS5 to CS6, so I wonder if that is the reason?
Any clues guys? Help is greatly appreciated.

Apple's Preview is one of the worst PDF viewers ever. Standard advice for just about every problem is "use the FREE Adobe Reader instead".
    That said, I'm intrigued:
    > I have recently switched from Illy CS5 to CS6, so I wonder if that is the reason?
    Can you test this?
A PMS ink does not "have" a color to display on screen, since the ink name in itself is enough to unambiguously identify it (when printing as color separations, to be exact). But (1) one would appreciate a fairly accurate preview, and (2) sometimes one needs to convert a PMS ink to its nearest equivalent in CMYK. For that reason, an approximation of the ink used should be stored into the PDF as well. I can't imagine Adobe forgot about that for CS6 (if so, your file won't work with Reader either), but maybe they switched it to a notation that poor dumb Preview cannot handle. In that case, I'm curious about what the difference could be.
If you can create a small file that demonstrably works correct in Preview when exported from CS5 and *not* from CS6, can you post both PDFs somewhere?

  • Wrong font in PDF opened in Preview

I have a Mac G5-Intel running 10.5.4. The problem is as follows:
I make a figure (a plot) with Igor, save the plot as EPS. I use Preview or "epstopdf" command to get the PDF.
For figures I processed before this problem showed up, the Preview displays the wrong font, but Acrobat displays the correct font (this is the font I selected in Igor when I first made the plot).
For figures processed after the problem showed up, both Preview and Acrobat display the same wrong font.
If I open the EPS version using some other application such as Canvas (a drafting software), the font displays correctly.
If I try to alter the font in the PDF file using Acrobat (full version), the font cannot always be changed because "The compatible system font and the document font may differ and some characters may look different. If the font is not on your system, there will be no way to re-embed it. Do you want to proceed?" message appears. I click "yes" and the font changes to Arial (I had requested Helvetica).
If I then want to change the font again to the previous condition, Acrobat refuses because "The change to a different font was not done because the chosen font and the font encodings in the document differ and could not be resolved."
The problem never occurred in my older Mac Power PC running 10.4. In my new Intel Mac, there was a trouble-free couple of weeks after I got the machine.
The problem doesn't happen when I take my pdf figures to a colleague's identical machine or to my Intel MacBook Pro laptop running 10.5.2.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

The problem also affects the same plots when they are part of a Latex output PDF made with TexShop. I thought this is normal, since Texshop uses Mac's PDF Preview machinery to process.

  • Highlighting PDF's in Preview

I have managed to find the button on which to do this, under the annotations toolbar, however when i press the button it does not highlight the document. I am a little confused as to why and what to do about this. Please help?

actually the PDF opened through Preview are able to highlight.
As far as I know, you need to open the PDF on Preview, click on the pencil icon (this way it will turn to blue), so every word you select will change its color to the one you select in the alias next to the pencil.
    I wish I could help;

  • In Safari how do I open a .PDF file in Preview instead of Adobe Reader?

When a pdf file opens on my computer in Safari, it opens with Adobe Reader (v. 7.0.8). Until recently, I could right-click on my mouse and and a drop-down menu would appear with the option to open the pdf file in Preview instead of Adobe. That option has now disappeared from the drop-down menu. Can anyone explain how to get back the menu option to open the pdf file in Preview? Thanks. David
    G4 Cube 1.8ghz/tiPowerbook 800 dvi/iMac (Intel) 20"   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

My computer automatically open PDF inside the Safari
window, but I wish it would go back to opening it
externally via Adobe. (maybe we should trade
    computers:-)
Anyway, we have the same question.
How do we control whether PDF launches internal to
    Safari, or external in Adobe?
This is what I would like to as well. I often have a lot of pdf files I need to open and then save to my hard drive. When I click on a pdf file on a website Safari opens it and then I need to right click in the document to open it with Adobe. How can I get it to open in Adobe the first time without having to right click after it opens in Safari?
    Thanks!

  • How Can I Prevent Emailed PDF (created in Acrobat)From Opening in Preview?

When I email my PDF page, if it is opened in another default viewer ('Preview', etc..) it opens up at the wrong size, (it is designed to open full screen and does not in 'Preview"), and the hot links do not work and are cold.  Is this due to people having older operating systems and/or old versions of applications? or something else?
Can I somehow treat the pdf on my end before I email it in order to ensure that the pdf is opened in Acrobat and reads and performs correctly?
I know I can include a note in the body copy of the email asking that it be opened in Acrobat, but I wish to 'take out the moving parts', so to speak, because one cannot always count on people to cooperate; (we all know how easy it is to just hit the  'Delete' button.).
Please someone tell me there is a way around this and a procedure that will ensure that a pdf open up as an acrobat document by default (help!).
    Thanks!

You really can't prevent it opening in Preview. There was a post recently (in the forms area I think) about writing some information to provide information in Preview as I recall. You should indicate in your e-mail that the PDF should be opened in Acrobat or Reader and that the use of Preview may create an unacceptable presentation.

If an image opens in a different application but you want it to always open in Preview when you double-click it, do this one time: Control-click the file, let go of the Control key, press the Option key, then choose Always Open With > Preview. Or, select the image file, choose Get Info from the File menu, then change the "Opens with:" pop-up menu choice to Preview.

  • Can't zoom PDFs in Safari nor open in preview

The Toolbar referenced by Apple help below no longer appears after the last update to Safari:
    View PDF files
When you click a link on a webpage for a PDF file, Safari displays the PDF in your browser window and provides a toolbar to help you view the file.
Open Safari if it is not already open, and go to the PDF page you want to view.Open Safari
To see a toolbar, move the pointer to the bottom-center of the page. If you move the pointer away from the toolbar, it disappears after a moment. The toolbar has four buttons. Point to each button to see what it does.
To change the font size, click the “Zoom in” and “Zoom out” buttons.
To view the PDF file in Preview, click the “Open PDF in Preview” button. After Preview opens, choose Help > Preview Help for more information about viewing PDF files.
To save the PDF file on your hard disk, click the “Save PDF to download folder” button.

I just updated my grandfather's computer (probably 10.6... I forget), and now he's experiencing the same thing.  Interestingly, if I go to a test PDF found randomly on the web, it opens and shows the 4-button toolbar.  But when we open one of the PDFs from his TD Ameritrade account, they open with no toolbar (and none to be awakened by moving the mouse down bottom center).
I question the value of opening PDFs in Safari at all when there's a great Preview readily available, but I put that on a different post.

  • Hyperlinks all over PDF when opening in Preview?!?

    Hi,
Been updating our software documentation in Adobe InDesign, I have removed ALL hyperlinks from the InDesign document but when I export and open this PDF in Preview there are hyperlinks everywhere such as on images and text.
If I open this PDF in Adobe Reader everything is fine, no hyperlinks anywhere.
    I have tried exporting in:
    Adobe InDesign CC
    Adobe InDesign CS6
    Adobe InDesign CS5.5
I have also tried Windows and OSX
The problem occurs when exporting in any of these.
    Can anyone shed some light?

Not behind my Mac at the mo'; I opened it in Acrobat Pro to see if there are actual hyperlinks in this file. Indeed, as you already said, there are none.(*) I think I'd have to see for myself what Preview exactly does, and at what locations. Note to Self: check tonite.
It's imaginable that Preview attempts to be similarly "helpful" as Acrobat in default mode: automatically make all links hot -- and fails to do so, just like Acrobat does. But surely this should not do anything to images.
Do you still have a previous version of this same PDF where your Preview does *not* automatically add links?
(*) Not even on texts that are clearly marked up to look like hyperlinks, the blue underlined web references. But I guess you would fix that (**) after you got this problem sorted out.
(**) While you're doing that, also fix the typo "trademsarks" under the copyright line.
